00:00What'd you see?
00:01Right there, right at the base of the tower.
00:03I'm seeing something peek out from behind it.
00:08That!
00:09What is that?
00:10On this episode of Expedition X.
00:13That is a huge freaking castle.
00:16My team is in Spain investigating the notorious Belmonte Castle.
00:21A blood-drenched fortress said to be Spain's most haunted site.
00:26People say that Tio Camuñez is walking around the castle.
00:30Odd Nights.
00:30With a vengeful killer stalking its halls.
00:33Here I come, Phil!
00:35Heather and Phil will explore the legends of La Mancha.
00:38Do you know which room she would do those ceremonies in?
00:41Tio Camuñez's brother was killed?
00:43Si.
00:44And do battle with the Spanish boogeyman.
00:48Heather?
00:48Holy s***!
00:50What was that?
00:50I do not know!
00:52Did you avenge your brother?
00:54Are we safe here?
00:57Whoa!
01:09What do you think of when I say La Mancha?
01:12Don Quixote.
01:13Don Quixote, the man of La Mancha.
01:14Famous 17th century Spanish novel about a guy who fights windmills while delusionally dressed as a knight.
01:20You know, I've always thought I'd make a pretty good knight.
01:23Now that's delusional.
01:24Delusional.
01:24Hey!
01:24Classic delusion right there.
01:26Well, La Mancha is also a place, and it is said to be home to the country's most feared spirit,
01:31the Spanish boogeyman, Tio Camuñez.
01:34Well, let me guess.
01:35That Spanish boogeyman is hanging around the castle today?
01:37According to the owners of the castle, absolutely.
01:39They say that this place is plagued with paranormal activity.
01:43And when you dig into the history of the castle, it's easy to see why.
01:46They say there is no ground in Spain more soaked in blood than Belmonte Castle.
01:56South of Madrid lies the vast plateau known as La Mancha.
02:00It's a savage landscape with a savage history to match.
02:03And nowhere is that violence more apparent than at Belmonte Castle.
02:09Built in 1456 by one of Spain's most famous knights, Don Juan Pacheco, the castle is at the center of
02:16many of Spain's bloodiest battles.
02:19Its gorious chapter begins when French forces invade the Iberian Peninsula in 1807.
02:26More than a million Spaniards die, and the French seize control of Belmonte,
02:32turning it into an infamous prison where hundreds of Spanish fighters are tortured and executed.
02:39The most notorious of these prisoners is Francisco Sanchez, who the French dub Tio Camuñez.
02:45His bloodthirsty rampage wreaked such havoc on French forces, they tremble in fear at the mention of his name.
02:53Today, his violent legend lives on.
02:57Tio Camuñez is known as the Spanish Boogeyman, and he's been scaring kids into behaving for centuries.
03:05Some say he still roams the castle looking for more victims.
03:09But the Boogeyman isn't the only famous figure said to be haunting its halls.
03:15Wife of Napoleon III, Napoleon Bonaparte's nephew, Empress Eugenia de Montijo, lives in the castle in the late 19th century.
03:24When war breaks out between Britain and the Zulu Kingdom, Eugenia helps get her son Louis Napoleon deployed with the
03:31British Army.
03:32When he dies in South Africa at the young age of 23, Eugenia is wracked with guilt.
03:39She conducts dozens of seances at Belmonte, desperate to speak with her only child.
03:45Many believe those rituals unlock powerful dark forces that remain trapped at Belmonte today.
03:54Could this explain why visitors and staff regularly report hearing otherworldly voices and seeing inexplicable shadow figures?
04:04Many have run screaming from the castle, vowing never to return.
04:10Belmonte has been in the Montalvo family for 20 generations, and they've had enough.
04:15They finally want to learn the truth behind the terrifying encounters in their ancestral home.
04:21Do the castle's dead still walk its ancient halls?
04:25Did the Empress unlock an evil energy?
04:28And does the Boogeyman still stalk Belmonte begging for blood?
04:37Okay, so what do you think?
04:39Well, I'm most interested in this 19th century seance aspect.
04:43Maybe the Empress let something in that she didn't mean to.
04:45And that something is still there?
04:47Could be.
04:48Okay, so dark forces potentially unleashed.
04:51And what about you?
04:51I assume you're buying all of this.
04:53Well, apart from the knights, which, again, I'd be great at.
04:56Oh, my word.
04:57What is it with you?
04:58Well, Belmonte is mostly known for its windmills, right?
05:01That's right.
05:01So maybe it's just weather and wind that is causing people to think that this area is haunted.
05:06You think the wind is just going, boo.
05:08I think it might be a little more complicated than that.
05:10Think about pressure drops.
05:12Humidity pockets, windchill.
05:14These are all things that can affect us physically, mentally, maybe make people see a few things.
05:19Okay, well, figure it out.
05:21Get to Belmonte Castle, meet with the current owner, the Count of Montalvo.
05:26Do you think he could make me a knight?
05:28Billy, you're obsessed.
05:30Guys, can't you see it?
05:31The gallant Sir Torres.
05:32I'd be riding my steed, defending the castle, protecting the damsels.
05:35You can't ride a horse.
05:36And no, we don't need your help.
05:37Oh, I can kind of ride.
05:39Okay, enough.
05:40Vamanos, you two.
05:41Good luck.
05:42Oh, and watch out for the boogeyman.
05:44Heather and Phil fly across the Atlantic on a seven-hour flight to Madrid.
05:49Then they set out on the one-hour drive through the arid plains of La Mancha on their way to
05:54Belmonte.
05:58Oh, look, look, look.
05:59Our first giant.
06:01Look at that windmill.
06:02That is gorgeous.
06:04Wow.
06:05And that's got to be, like, hundreds of years old.
06:07Yeah.
06:09Do you know what I just realized about windmills?
06:11What?
06:13They're windmills.
06:15Oh, God.
06:16Like, they mill flour.
06:18Oh, my God.
06:18I didn't realize that.
06:19I just thought it was a windmill.
06:21But now I'm like, oh, it uses wind to actually mill something.
06:26That's amazing.
06:27Yeah.
06:28There's no way you knew that.
06:29Yes.
06:30What?
06:31Yes.
06:31You knew a windmill milled flour?
06:33Yes.
06:34I just thought it was, like, it's just one word, windmill.
06:37Learn something new every day.
06:38Bless your heart.
06:40Think that's it up there?
06:42That is a huge freaking castle.
06:45Look at that.
06:47Wow.
06:48And look at these guys.
06:49Oh, my God.
06:52This place is perfect.
06:57Oh, my goodness.
06:59Looks like they got the traditional longswords.
07:01Oh, did you see that pummeling techniques?
07:04I nailed him.
07:04I dropped it in the head.
07:06Oh, my gosh.
07:06Can I just hang out with these guys?
07:07No.
07:08I could totally do that.
07:11Hola, Hernando.
07:12Que tal?
07:13Hello.
07:13Encantado.
07:14Welcome to Belmonte.
07:15It's beautiful here.
07:17And those knights?
07:18They are very good.
07:18Yeah.
07:19Be careful with them.
07:20Okay.
07:20Would you like to come inside?
07:22Please.
07:23Wow.
07:24Look at it.
07:24Stunning.
07:26Hernando Barsenas, also known as the Count of Montalvo,
07:30is the owner of Belmonte Castle,
07:32the historic property has been in his bloodline
07:35since it was built.
07:37So tell us about the dark history of this castle.
07:40In 600 years, all we have is war, prison, tortures.
07:47I don't think it was a pleasant life for anybody.
07:52What about this Spanish boogeyman, this Tio Camuñez?
07:56What is his connection to this place?
07:58Tio Camuñez was actually as a prisoner in the castle,
08:01tortured in the dungeons.
08:05People say that Tio Camuñez is walking around the castle at night.
08:11What other sorts of activity is here?
08:13Probably the most known activity is someone hanging from one tower.
08:19Over the years, this story is repeated,
08:22that someone hanging from the tower.
08:25People report seeing shadows.
08:29Talk to our staff.
08:31They are the ones who have heard strange noises around the castle.
08:35Yeah, we got to talk to them.
08:36Yeah, that'd be great.
08:40Hernando directs us to the other side of the castle,
08:43where three members of his staff have gathered
08:45to share their first-hand accounts of unusual activity.
08:49Soy Phil.
08:50Trini.
08:51Mara.
08:52Hey there.
08:53Mara, Trini, and Nuria
08:55have spent over 60 years between them working at Belmonte.
09:01Hernando's told us that all of y'all
09:03have had strange experiences here.
09:04Is that true?
09:06It's true.
09:06Who took this photo?
09:14Yo.
09:16All right, we got to hear the story,
09:17because this is wild.
09:19I was at home one night
09:21looking at the security camera feeds
09:23from all over the castle on my tablet.
09:28The camera in one of the rooms upstairs kept triggering,
09:32despite no one being in the castle.
09:36And when I zoomed in for a closer look,
09:39I could see the image of a woman dressed in white.
09:43And it looked like she was crossing between rooms.
09:47That's when I took the screenshot.
09:50Then I turned off the tablet and didn't turn it back on for a couple of days.
09:54It freaked me out so much.
09:57It freaked me out so much.
09:57Wow.
09:57Wow.
09:58And you have a story as well?
10:00My experience happened during the COVID lockdown.
10:05A friend called me at home late one night and said that he could see the castle,
10:10and it looked like a light was left on.
10:13So I drove up here with my family to make sure no one was breaking in or trespassing.
10:20We got here and could not find anyone.
10:22But then I looked up and saw a shadow figure working around the top of the tower,
10:29brushing up against the stones.
10:32I've never been so scared in my life.
10:35Is that the tower that people have seen a hanging figure outside the window?
10:39Yes, the same one.
10:43Do you all have a theory as to why there's so much activity in this whole castle?
10:48I think Eugenia is still here.
10:52Eugenia?
10:54According to legend, Eugenia did rituals and seances to try and make contact with her son,
11:00who died relatively young.
11:03That might have stirred up some activity.
11:06Do you know which room she would do those ceremonies in?
11:10In her bedroom, which is one level up.
11:13The room where the image was captured.
11:19Okay.
11:20Looks like we've got a lot of investigating to do.
11:22Yeah.
11:22Let's grab our gear and set up some cameras.
11:24Okay.
11:26Hernando gives us the keys to the castle with full access
11:29to investigate all the paranormal claims.
11:32We set up surveillance in the major hotspots,
11:35including the tower, where a ghostly figure has been seen hanging,
11:40the dungeon,
11:42the courtyard,
11:44and the parlor where Eugenia allegedly conducted her mysterious seances.
11:49I get a lot of mirror, I get the bed, I get the chairs.
11:52Okay.
11:53Yeah, that looks great.
11:56The plan is to start the night in the parlor with a seance of our own.
12:01By the power of the West, by the silence of the night.
12:05Using devices that Eugenia might have used during her 19th century communication rituals.
12:10A spirit board, a pendulum, and other ritual objects.
12:13Spirits of the blessed dead, come and break the eternal fast this night.
12:19While I conduct the seance, Phil monitors the surveillance cams
12:23to see if my questions cause any activity elsewhere in the castle.
12:28My name is Heather.
12:30I'm going to ask you some yes or no questions.
12:32You can use your energy to move the pendulum this way for yes,
12:37and this way for no.
12:40Is there anyone here with us?
12:46Yes.
12:51Are you Eugenia?
12:58Yes.
13:00Did you do seances in this very room?
13:06Yes.
13:09Are we safe here?
13:13No.
13:19Is there anyone else here with us?
13:25Yes.
13:28Is the Spanish boogeyman here?
13:32Yes.
13:35Are you Tio Comunas?
13:42Looks like a shadow moving across the courtyard.
13:51I saw it when you were talking about Tio Comunas.
13:57Are you causing the activity?
14:01There's something wrong in there.
14:06Oh, my God.
14:07The tower.
14:07The rampart.
14:08Come here.
14:10What did you see?
14:11Right there, right at the base of the tower.
14:13I'm seeing something peek out from behind it.
14:18That.
14:18What is that?
14:36Would have been right here, probably about, what, this height?
14:44Moving in and then back towards the base of the tower.
14:47What do you think it was?
14:49I don't know.
14:50I mean, you saw what I saw.
14:52Maybe we're not alone here in the castle.
14:55It's a big property.
14:56Maybe someone snuck up here.
14:57Could have been a cat.
14:58It could still be up here on the ramparts.
15:01I want to do a lap around the perimeter with the flare, see if I can pick up whatever it
15:04is.
15:05Okay.
15:05While you're doing that, I'm going to lay an EMF tripwire out.
15:08This is where several witnesses have seen a hanging figure off the side of this wall.
15:13We have to investigate here.
15:15Okay.
15:16I'm going to do a circuit around.
15:17I guess I'll see you back here.
15:18Stay walking.
15:19Okay.
15:24This castle is big.
15:26This seems like the perfect place for a cat to live and thrive.
15:31Think of all the birds that must land up here.
15:34Easy lunch for it.
15:36Okay.
15:38This is Heather again.
15:39You can use this device to communicate with me.
15:41If you get close to it, it will light up and I'll take that as a yes.
15:44If you stay away, I'll take it as a no.
15:48Is there anyone here with us?
15:53Is the shadow figure that we just saw, are you still here?
15:59Is Tio Comunias here?
16:03Is Eugenia here?
16:10I'm not seeing any activity.
16:12There's no color changes.
16:13Whatever was here is gone.
16:20So?
16:20I got nothing.
16:22Well, I got nothing also.
16:26Doesn't mean there's not a cat up here.
16:28Well, you know what?
16:29There's still one more thing up here that we have to investigate.
16:32What's that?
16:36The side of this rampart.
16:38I want to investigate in the exact same spot where they've seen this hanging figure.
16:42How do you do that?
16:44Repel down.
16:45How high is this?
16:47Whoa.
16:49That's high.
16:51Okay.
16:51Let's grab the rope.
16:53Could the shadow figure we saw on the surveillance camera be the same ghostly figure that's been reported hanging over
16:59the edge of this tower?
17:01To find out, I'm going to try and put myself in the eye of the storm, rappelling halfway down the
17:07wall to conduct an EVP session.
17:10Phil will be down on the ground with the FLIR camera to see if anything shows up next to me.
17:15This is a 75-foot drop.
17:18So if my ropes don't hold, I might become the newest ghost of Belmonte.
17:27All right, Heather, you got this.
17:32That is really high up there.
17:34Here I come, Phil.
17:36You got this, Heather?
17:40There you go.
17:44Okay.
17:45Nice.
17:47Okay, all right.
17:49How are you feeling?
17:50Feeling like I'm hanging off the side of a damn castle.
17:55Okay, okay, she's going, she's going, she's going.
17:59Looks good.
18:03I'm here hanging off the side of the castle, and I'm pretty much a trigger object right now because I
18:08am literally a hanging figure.
18:10So I'm thinking I'm going to do a call-and-response session.
18:16Okay.
18:20Is there anyone here with me?
18:27Are you Tio Comunas?
18:29Is your soul trapped here?
18:37You see anything, Phil?
18:40So far clear.
18:41Why are you here?
18:43Why are you here?
18:47Weird.
18:50That was bizarre.
18:52Heather?
18:53Yes?
18:53I just saw something weird.
18:55What do you mean you just saw something weird?
18:58I'm telling you, I just saw it look like a shadow drop from where you are straight down to the
19:03ground.
19:03What?
19:11I'm coming down.
19:13Okay.
19:19You good?
19:19I'm good.
19:21What do you think you saw?
19:23I mean, the only thing I can describe it as was a shadow about the size of your shadow that
19:29was up there,
19:30and it just literally dropped from where you were straight down, as if it was you falling straight to the
19:36ground.
19:38I don't like that.
19:39Again, just a shadow, from my perspective, could have been anything.
19:43To me, if that's exactly where people have seen that hanging figure,
19:46and you see a shadow plummeting to the ground,
19:49as if someone were trying to escape the tower,
19:51if they ran out of rope, if they lost their grip.
19:54And just fell straight to their death right here.
19:56That could be like a residual haunting.
19:59Do you have any footage of it?
20:01Honestly, I don't know.
20:04But we did have the surveillance camera rolling,
20:05so we can check that footage, see if we got anything.
20:07Yeah, I'd love to get eyes on it.
20:10Unfortunately, when we review the footage,
20:13our tower cam was too high to catch the shadow Phil says he saw.
20:17With dawn approaching, and more questions than answers,
20:21we decide to call it a night.
20:23The next day, Phil and I split up to gather more intel on the infamous Teo Camuñas.
20:29I've arranged to meet with the mayor of the town of Camuñas,
20:32Fernando Gallego Vega.
20:35In addition to being mayor,
20:37Fernando is also a historian who spent years studying the legend of the Spanish boogeyman.
20:44Mayor, thank you so much for agreeing to meet with me.
20:47I am so excited to learn more about Teo Camuñas.
20:51Can you tell me more about him?
20:55Teo Camuñas was just a normal man in this village
20:57until the French invasion happened in the early 1800s.
21:01Little by little, the French started to take over more parts of Spain.
21:04And when they started to occupy this region,
21:08Teo Camuñas' brother, Juan Pedro,
21:10began to speak out and started to have issues with the local authorities,
21:13who were pro-French.
21:15So Juan Pedro was sentenced to death and killed.
21:18And that's when Teo Camuñas wore vengeance against the French.
21:22Wait, so Teo Camuñas' brother was killed?
21:25Si.
21:26How did they kill him?
21:28Lo fusilaron.
21:29By a firing squad.
21:34After he died,
21:36the French hanged Juan Pedro from one of the windmills just outside of town.
21:41And they left him hanging there for 72 days
21:46to show the rest of the villagers what happens to agitators and dissidents.
21:50That's totally barbaric.
21:54This was when Teo Camuñas formed a smart army to fight back against the French.
22:00That sounds like someone trying to save his town, trying to save his country.
22:05It was the French who really changed the history.
22:08Teo Camuñas was very much a hero,
22:10a freedom fighter,
22:11and his fame went very far.
22:13So the French turned his legend into the evil boogeyman that it is today.
22:22While Heather speaks with the mayor,
22:24I've arranged to meet a local blacksmith,
22:26Julio Ramirez,
22:27who claims he had a paranormal experience
22:30that may be connected to Belmonte Castle,
22:32and I want to interrogate it.
22:34As I understand it,
22:36something happened to you
22:37that was incredibly unsettling
22:39at a windmill nearby.
22:40Can you walk me through it?
22:44One night, me and a couple of my friends
22:46went to go work
22:47inside the La Union weed mill
22:49on the edge of town.
22:50As soon as we arrived,
22:52something was up.
22:53When we went inside,
22:55we felt a sudden,
22:56mysterious drop in temperature.
22:58Then, as we were climbing the stairs,
23:00we all heard a strange,
23:02disembodied voice call out,
23:03What do you want?
23:05What do you want?
23:06Very clear and clear.
23:10There's also a piece of machinery
23:11inside the windmill
23:13that makes a very particular noise
23:15that is only audible
23:16when the windmill is connected.
23:18On this night,
23:19the windmill was not in operation,
23:21but we all strangely heard
23:23this mechanical noise
23:24by gears turning
23:25as if it was in fact running
23:27while we were in there.
23:30We're here investigating
23:32the Belmonte Castle
23:33and Teal Camunas.
23:34Is there a connection there
23:36to this windmill?
23:39There's actually
23:39a very strong connection.
23:41This windmill is where
23:42Teal Camunas' brother,
23:44Juan Pedro,
23:45was hanged on display
23:46for 72 days.
23:48Wow.
23:50We got the story all wrong.
23:51Teal Camunas is a hero,
23:53not a boogeyman.
23:54How does he die?
23:56Teal Camunas became
23:57such a big problem
23:58for the French army
24:00that at some point
24:01they lured him
24:01to Belmonte Castle
24:03where he was captured,
24:04tortured,
24:05and eventually shot and killed.
24:07Teal Camunas
24:08was even buried
24:09at the castle,
24:09but his remains
24:11had never been found.
24:13Oh my God.
24:16Heather and I meet back up
24:17and head to La Union Windmill
24:19where Julio had
24:20his terrifying experience
24:22and where the brother
24:23of Teal Camunas
24:24was killed.
24:32Look how huge these things are
24:34when you get up close.
24:36Look at that!
24:38So how do you want to approach this?
24:40I want to focus on the outside
24:41of this windmill
24:42and I want to string up
24:43some EMF tripwires
24:44on those blades.
24:46Okay.
24:46Just make me a promise
24:48you're not going to repel
24:49off the top of this thing.
24:50No, I think I got that one
24:51out of my system.
24:52Good.
24:53I want to focus on the inside
24:54because as far as
24:55the reports go,
24:57sounds, temperature drops,
24:59those to me,
24:59I feel like they could
25:00be explainable.
25:01I want to see
25:02if I can find a draft
25:03in there.
25:03I want to see
25:04if I can find
25:05something making a noise
25:06that is really mechanical
25:08and not spiritual.
25:10Before you do that,
25:11you've got to help me
25:12move these blades.
25:12All right.
25:14Since the windmill
25:16is not currently operational,
25:17the blades are disconnected
25:19and easy to reposition.
25:21Got it.
25:22Got it.
25:22According to our experts,
25:23the brother of Tia Comunias
25:25was hanged
25:26from these very windmill blades.
25:29I want to see
25:30if we can detect
25:30any paranormal energy,
25:32so Phil and I rig each of them
25:34with an EMF tripwire.
25:38Perfect.
25:39That looks great.
25:40Yeah, it does.
25:41If anything happens
25:42on any of these windmill blades,
25:43we're going to see it.
25:44Okay.
25:45I'll head in.
25:47While Phil heads inside
25:48to investigate
25:49the mysterious noises
25:50Julio reported,
25:52I'll stay outside
25:53and conduct a call-and-response
25:55session with the SLS camera.
26:00Okay.
26:06What is that?
26:09There's a wheel bag here.
26:19That noise
26:21is probably
26:23what Julio described
26:25when he said he heard
26:26this place moving
26:27when it shouldn't have been active.
26:30So I'm wondering if
26:33it could move on its own somehow.
26:36My name is Heather.
26:39I'm here to communicate with you.
26:44Is there anyone here with me?
26:48Were you hanged here?
26:57That is going off like crazy.
27:00I see you're already using the tripwire.
27:03You're letting me know
27:06that you are here.
27:09Let's see what's up here.
27:14This is some incredible engineering.
27:19Wow.
27:22And you know the thing
27:23about old structures?
27:24They tend to creak
27:26and moan
27:27and make all sorts of noises.
27:38No way.
27:40This has been going off
27:41non-stop when I was up there
27:42and it stopped
27:43as soon as I started moving it,
27:45which doesn't even make sense.
27:46Something was messing with it.
27:48Let me check it out on that SLS.
27:50Were you just
27:53making this blade go off?
27:58I saw you lighting up that sensor.
28:05Teocomunius' brother,
28:06are you here with us?
28:25It literally sounds like
28:26that machine is moving down there.
28:32Oh!
28:34The hell was that?
28:42That was really loud.
28:47Heather?
28:48What was that?
28:49I do not know.
28:53What was that?
28:58Wait a second.
28:59What?
29:00That's a different color.
29:03Whoa!
29:04It's red!
29:05Yeah.
29:06Holy s***.
29:07That's an entire blade.
29:09How does that even happen?
29:12I want to get out my recorder
29:14and do a call and response
29:15and just see if I can get in the ABPs.
29:17Okay.
29:23Is there anyone here with us?
29:27Juan Pedro?
29:29Are you here with us?
29:33Is there anything you want to say to us?
29:44That's moving.
29:47That just moved.
29:51That is wild.
29:54Maybe these blades can move.
29:56Maybe it was windy enough.
29:57No way.
29:58No way.
29:58Maybe it's Juan Pedro.
30:00Maybe his spirit is still trapped here today.
30:03His body was left to hang on the blaze of this windmill.
30:08I'd like to leave my recorder going
30:09and I want to head back to Belmonte
30:11because Tio Camunas was actually buried there.
30:14Whoa.
30:15I know.
30:16Okay.
30:16I mean, I'm happy to stay behind at the windmill
30:18because I'm going to figure out what's actually causing all these noises.
30:22Look, call me if anything happens.
30:23I can come to you.
30:24You can come to me.
30:25Let's follow the activity.
30:26Okay.
30:27You got it.
30:30Leaving Phil to investigate how that brake wheel might have moved,
30:33I'd book it back to Belmonte Castle.
30:36Now that we know Tio Camunas was executed and buried right here,
30:40I wonder whether that shadow figure Phil saw in the courtyard
30:44on our first night could have been him.
30:48Is there anyone here with me?
30:58I'm in the courtyard of Belmonte Castle.
31:04I learned that Tio Camunas, you were a hero.
31:11That you were not a Spanish boogeyman.
31:16My theory is that the weather is causing the unexplained noises reported at the windmill.
31:20I just need to prove it.
31:22So this is an anonometer.
31:24It tells you wind speed.
31:27It tells you temperature.
31:29Again, right around two miles per hour.
31:32But window closed.
31:37Look at that.
31:37Wheel's still spinning.
31:39Still get a little draft.
31:41It's not nothing.
31:42It could be enough to potentially cause a temperature fluctuation.
31:47It could be enough to cause some of these things to move around a little bit.
31:55You can show yourself
31:59what you executed here in this courtyard.
32:12I'm in this space because I think this may have been one of the last places that you got to
32:20see daylight.
32:22Oh, I feel like something is just toying with me.
32:28There was like a crouching figure right there.
32:32Tio Camunas, was that you?
32:36Why are you kneeling on the ground?
32:41Were you kneeling because you were about to be executed?
32:54The wind's picked up.
33:02Definitely does not feel like I'm alone.
33:12Is there anyone here with me?
33:18No way.
33:20Holy s**t.
33:22It looks like a figure fighting for his life.
33:29The knights of Belmonte were nothing compared to the most famous knight in Spanish history,
33:35Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, also known as El Cid.
33:39He accomplished much in life and almost as much in death.
33:43In the late 11th century, El Cid became a national hero,
33:48defending the city of Valencia, then ruling it for five years.
33:52Then he died and things got really weird.
33:55The story goes that when invaders next attacked Valencia,
33:58El Cid rose from the dead and led his knights back into battle.
34:03And it worked.
34:05Supposedly, the invaders ran, terrified, from the zombie knight.
34:09And as crazy as this story is, apparently, it's true.
34:14Well, partly.
34:15When the city was threatened, El Cid's wife allegedly had her late husband's body exhumed,
34:20propping him up in full armor to rally the troops.
34:24Inspiring, but also super gross.
34:30Holy s**t.
34:33It looks like a figure fighting for his life.
34:36No way.
34:39Is there anyone there?
34:42I've seen you twice now.
34:53Phil, you gotta get over here.
34:54There's a lot of activity going on.
34:56Okay.
34:57On my way.
34:58Bye, guys.
34:58Let's go.
35:07Hey.
35:08Hey.
35:08What's going on?
35:10Something powerful is going on in this courtyard.
35:13Okay, so what are you thinking?
35:14I got a couple hits on the SLS, so I think there's this opportunity for us to go big.
35:20I'm thinking courtyard big.
35:22I'm gonna need your help, and I hope you don't throw out your back while you're at it.
35:26Sounds fun.
35:27Let's go.
35:30When I did the seance in Eugenia's room...
35:32Are you Tio communis?
35:33It seemed to stir up activity.
35:36Looks like a shadow moving across the courtyard.
35:41Where is this going?
35:43Right here.
35:44So, I want to supersize that idea with a huge version of a seance in the very heart of the
35:50castle, the courtyard.
35:52Maybe when Eugenia was performing those seances back in her time, she opened up a door that never got closed.
35:58And now, we can give voice to whoever she was communicating with.
36:03Instead of candles, I source some large torches to represent the four cardinal directions.
36:11Meanwhile, Phil lays down salt to establish a protective perimeter.
36:15Inside the salt ring, I'll conduct a call-and-response session using a wisp candle.
36:20If it lights up, that means yes, and someone is trying to communicate with us.
36:29I invoke ye, you divine forces of the spirit of life.
36:38Is there anyone here with us?
36:42You can use this recorder.
36:45You can use this wisp light.
36:48It'll light up, and I know you're saying yes.
36:54Yeugenia, are you here with us?
36:58No.
37:02Teocomunas, are you with us right now?
37:09I don't know if you can see it from where you are.
37:11Lighting up?
37:13Yes.
37:16Teocomunas, have you been haunting this place because you're misunderstood?
37:23Teocomunas, have you been haunting this place?
37:26We understand you now.
37:29We know the man behind the legend is a hero, not a boogeyman.
37:39Did you avenge your brother?
37:45Yes.
37:57Teocomunas, you do not need to be trapped here.
37:59You are free to go.
38:07Maybe by shutting down this ritual, it could help him.
38:10Bring him peace.
38:12Okay.
38:15Okay.
38:28Curiously, after Heather closed her supersized seance, the winds at Belmonte calmed.
38:33No other activity was caught on the team's surveillance cams for the rest of the night.
38:39Teocomunas, are you with us right now?
38:40Was Heather really communicating with the Spanish boogeyman, Teocomunas?
38:45And did she somehow bring him peace?
38:48She certainly believes so.
38:50And even Phil accepts that the timing of the responses seems more than lucky.
38:55Are you trapped here?
38:59Re-examining all the evidence they captured, Heather believes the boogeyman really may have
39:04been with them from the beginning.
39:05There's a Spanish boogeyman here.
39:07At the first mention of his name on night one, Phil immediately noticed this shadow figure
39:13in an archway of the courtyard.
39:16This was the exact same archway where Heather later captured the image of a crouching figure
39:21on her SLS camera.
39:24Teocomunas, was that you?
39:25But not all the Comunas connections were as strong.
39:28The team heard strange sounds at the windmill where Teocomunas' brother, Juan Pedro, was hanged.
39:36While Heather was at Belmonte, Phil realized the sound was simply caused by a gust of wind
39:41moving the blades.
39:43Wait a second.
39:44What?
39:46That's a different color.
39:48Whoa!
39:49Phil also has a compelling explanation for the EMF tripwire going off on the westernmost
39:55blade.
39:56That's an entire blade.
39:58West of the windmill is the town of Comunas.
40:01To the east, there's only open fields.
40:04He believes simple electrical interference and not residual energy from a hanged person
40:10is the very obvious explanation.
40:13This has been going off non-stop when I was up there, and it stopped as soon as I started
40:17moving it.
40:18But what's much harder to explain is the audio captured during Heather's mid-air call
40:24and response session.
40:25Is your soul trapped here?
40:27After hours of analysis, Heather believes that she caught this astonishing EVP.
40:32Why are you here?
40:38Heather identifies the word libertad, Spanish for freedom.
40:47Many men were tortured and imprisoned at Belmonte, including Tio Camuñez.
40:52Were they still seeking freedom centuries later?
40:56And did Heather and Phil somehow give them their release?
41:00Tio Camuñez, you are free to go.
41:02Only time and the castle's resident Montalvo dynasty will tell.
41:07And speaking of dynasties, before they left Spain, Phil wanted to put his own heritage
41:12to the test.
41:14Told you I'd make a great night.
41:16I'm Gordia, Torres.
41:17I don't know about you, but my money's on Heather.
41:23Oh, God.
41:25How do I get up?
41:26You don't.
41:27I'm so happy.
41:28I don't know about you, but I don't know about you.
41:28I don't know about you.
