Queenslanders fined more than $5.4 million since 50c fares began

Fare evaders in Queensland have been hit with more than $4.5 million in fines, since the introduction of 50 cent fares a year and a half ago.

00:10An ABC investigation has found since August 2024, when the discounted ticket prices kicked

00:17off through to March 4 this year, authorities handed out more than 14,000 fare evasion penalties.

00:24The total value of fines over the 19-month period came in at around $4.7 million.

00:30The penalties helped authorities recoup just over $7,000 in revenue in unpaid fares.

00:36Roughly 76,000 warnings were also given out, which equates to another $38,000 in lost revenue.

00:44A spokesman for Transport Minister Brent Mikkelberg says it's not worth doing the wrong thing.

00:49A fine for skipping out on a 50 cent fare is $333.
