13:51Australia I worked in Australia for quite a long time in the 1980s I hosted a daily show
13:57on Channel 9 anyway consequently I've got lots of friends in Australia and I go out and see them
14:03every year so this year I decided to go to places I've never been to before and I started off
14:10on the
14:11west coast and I went first of all to a place called Denmark which is a bit confusing
14:16in western Australia it's very very beautiful coastline and after that I went down to some
14:22somewhere that looked like Albany except the Australians called it Albany anyway Albany is an
14:29incredible place it's right down in the kind of bottom left-hand corner as you look at Australia
14:34and it's the port that most of the Australian soldiers went to the Second World War from I think

24:52someone because when you are mesmerized you might not appreciate instead of giving a silent nod to a
24:56man who was a real sensation in 18th century europe um he was hailed as the master of a major

25:05breakthrough by some but he was also earmarked as a complete charlatan by others and this was france
25:11anton mesmer who um thought that planets had a direct influence on the tissues of the human body
25:17which was not a new idea because it sort of that permeated um superstition in the middle ages etc and
25:23beyond but he really believed in this mysterious fluid that um flowed through all matter and he called
25:30this force animal magnetism which we use a little bit more loosely these days but for him it was
25:35something very very scientific um lots of records um about the treatment which was quite curious really
25:41um this is for almost any malady that people presented with so patients would join hands and
25:46they would sit in a circle around a large tub of sulfuric acid um apparently and sticking sticking out of
25:53this for several iron bars which is a bit odd and these bars had been previously touched by mesmer and
26:00so they were carrying this animal magnetism um he then proceeded to personally touch each patient and
26:07that made them kind of writhe and and sort of squirm you can imagine this sort of whole circle of
26:13kind of
26:13complete agitation and chaos and these are supposed to be crises of the body that then would affect a total
26:18cure that was the idea as you can imagine there was some sort of skeptics um uh you know who
26:24kind of
26:25thought hang on is this the right thing to do is this is this really happening um and king louis

26:3116th it was appointed a committee uh to investigate mesmer and his um so-called remedies and one of those
26:38on the committee incidentally was benjamin franklin who um as well as being a statesman was also an inventor and
26:42scientist himself anyway unsurprisingly they concluded that the cures weren't anything to
26:48do with this animal magnetism but it was all about the imagination so it was all psychosomatic really
26:54um years later uh mesmer fled paris this was in the wake of the french revolution but it was recognized
27:00that what he promoted was a kind of sleepwalking almost some sort of somnambulism which was the
27:06precursor of hypnosis and in fact it was one of his disciples who went on to develop his theory
27:11and developed a proper technique for inducing hypnosis but his animal magnetism although did have some
27:17kind of clinical grounding i suppose was steeped in sensationalism and um he's not really uh regarded
27:24as i say as the true scientist in in the modern sense of the word which is why we talk
27:29about
27:29hypnotism today and not about the mesmerism anymore indeed mesmerism
