00:05that we're working on and
00:07on the day of announce we're going to show it to you guys
00:09live here in just a few minutes
00:11so I think what we'll do is
00:13we'll actually start with the video that we put

00:17talk all about yourself so
00:19we're going to play that video in case
00:21you guys haven't seen it yet and we'll be back in

00:25where you guys are going to get the first ever live
00:27peek of the game and get to talk
00:29directly to our developers right here
00:42what if we sort of
00:44started new worlds
00:45all the time so you're going to log on
00:47play with your friends go on adventures
00:50build, destroy
00:51do whatever you want in these worlds and then
00:53once you've defeated it we're going to roll up a new
00:55one that is going to be a completely new experience
00:57next time around. Putting it all together
00:59putting it online and that's going to be true
01:05the worlds are really a combination of
01:08handcrafted content and auto generated zones
01:11and once we said okay we're going to make new worlds
01:13for you to explore all the time we had to answer
01:15a lot of other interesting questions like
01:17alright how are we going to make it so the things you build
01:20carry over or show up again
01:22how are we going to save your progress
01:23and answering those questions has really driven a lot of what the game has become
01:27when you have a very
01:28small team you don't have the
01:30option to make a lot of content by hand
01:32and so you need to come up with systems
01:34that are able to make the content
01:36that you want and put it together in ways
01:38that are interesting and that are
01:40meaningful to the user. The voxels are great because
01:42you can build whatever kind of world you want to build
01:44it's like taking Legos and anyone can pick up Legos
01:47and build something really cool with them
01:48really quick. We have the basics
01:50there you can build things you can destroy things
01:52you can fight monsters
01:54you can actually even build things outside
01:56of the game that we have a pipeline for
01:58importing them into the game
02:01there's this entire different energy that happens
02:03when you actually have real people
02:05playing your games and the developers
02:07and the players are interacting and that's
02:09the bit of magic that we really want to roll
02:11out as early as possible
02:13and make players a part of this experience
02:15of making this thing real
02:19the thing that sets Prove most apart from the competition
02:21is both being free of play
02:23and direct community involvement
02:25in development of the game
02:26we're going to be on Reddit
02:28we're going to be on Twitter
02:29interacting with the community
02:30finding their feedback
02:31finding the directions that they want
02:32the game to go in
02:34we have no ego
02:34we don't think that our ideas are necessarily the best ideas
02:37we think that we are good at
02:38curating ideas and putting them together
02:40into a cohesive whole
02:41but the idea themselves can come from anywhere

03:10I mean we've got a little bit of an introduction there
03:12but so what are we
03:14well tell us about Trove
03:15and yourselves
03:15first yourselves then Trove
03:17alright I'm Ted Sanger
03:17I'm the animator on the project
03:19yeah I'm Andrew Krausnick
03:20I'm the creative lead on the project
03:22and so a little bit about Trove
03:24I hope you guys obviously saw the video
03:26over a year ago
03:27a couple of us who were working on Rift
03:29decided we basically wanted to
03:31try something new
03:32do something smaller
03:34MMOs are obviously giant projects
03:35and we really wanted to see
03:37what kind of thing we could basically do in a year
03:40put something out there
03:41we saw a lot of smaller games that were developing
03:43in the public eye
03:44and that's also something we were really really interested in doing
03:47but we still liked a lot of things about MMOs
03:49we still like leveling up
03:51we like classes
03:52we like playing online with our friends
03:53these are all things we think we do well at Tryon
03:56sorry guys he was quiet

04:09and obviously like Minecraft had come out
04:11Terraria had come out
04:11we were definitely inspired by those games
04:13and we thought alright
04:14what can we do that combines the things we like about MMOs
04:17and these kind of more modifiable mutable worlds
04:21and we started building that game
04:23a couple of us in a room
04:24we're now a team of eleven people right now
04:26so we're still very very small
04:28and we've hit a point where we feel comfortable showing it to you guys
04:31we're not going to have an NDA
04:32we're going to start inviting people from the public
04:35a couple weeks from now probably
04:36we have a few more things we want to do
04:38but even before then we want to start showing you what we've got
04:41a little bit more about the game
04:42we basically have three pillars that we're looking to fulfill
04:46you know achieve
04:46which is we want to have adventure
04:48we want to have exploration
04:49and we want to have creation
04:51so adventure means you know going out in the world
04:53collecting loot
04:54leveling up your character
04:56exploration
04:56we always want to have new things to find
04:58we're actually going to be
05:00resetting the world as a core mechanic
05:02we're going to have ways to save things you've built
05:03ways to have things you've built carry over to other worlds
05:06but unlike some of the other games
05:07like cube world like Minecraft
05:09we're actually going to be resetting the world often
05:11and using a lot more procedural generation
05:13so for example
05:14dungeons are going to be procedurally generated
05:18you know caves mountains
05:19the adventures you're going to go on
05:21are going to have rule sets that create new ones each time you play
05:24and then finally for creation
05:26we want the standard creation that you find in these games
05:29so you know build what you want
05:30and then we also want to open a pipeline for the community
05:33to be able to create pieces in the game
05:35so we have weapons in right now that actually weren't created by members of our team
05:39in fact most of our weapons were created by other people at Tryon
05:42they're cubes
05:42they're how you're used to interacting with the world
05:45and you can make them and we'll be adding them to the game
05:47so our main community hub is right now going to be on Reddit
05:50we anticipate keeping it there
05:53and we want to use that as a way for you guys to upvote
05:55and say the things you like to see
05:57so we can put them in the game as we develop it in front of you

06:44we actually put up a new build last night
06:45that has a few new things that we'll show you
06:47but people have started building things in it already
06:50so we obviously have building and destruction
06:53destruction is actually something that's pretty fun
06:54and I think we've sort of pushed farther
06:56it's not a huge advancement but it's pretty cool
06:58so we've got for example bombs
07:00so Ted you want to

07:03see what happens to the world when we throw a few bombs out there
07:06you'll notice something else with our art style
07:07is that while we are heavily QXL based
07:10we did go with particles and effects that are a little more stylized
07:15clean looking
07:17but not just QB
07:18so you can see the smoke trails on that
07:20looks like someone else is on the server and found us
07:22and also wants to blow us up

07:56I don't want to promise anything we're not definitely going to do
07:59it is PC only right now
08:00and that is mostly so we can keep development at a nice clip
08:03we want to do frequent weekly updates to this game
08:07we are looking at both next gen as well as things like Steam Box
08:11the game has run on the Mac before
08:12I anticipate it will run on the Mac again
08:15but again we're PC only right now to make sure we can keep up the speed of development that we
08:19want
08:19since we are so early in development
08:23approximate minimum requirements
08:24I mean a game this early in development is always really hard to promise any sort of minimum requirements
08:28but it does
08:30I know it runs very flexibly
08:32yeah it does and we're still keeping an eye on optimization
08:37it runs on well if you can run Rift you can definitely run this game
08:42I don't know what I'm building here
08:43some sort of structure with a base

09:06and so it's in this we're where we're taking your guys input we want to know early on
09:13as he said this is this is basically the first point where we got to a point where we can
09:17show the game
09:18I can write talking about it right enough of something that we can actually show you
09:22there you go solve your problem always
09:25alright there's a tunnel and then we can show some loot too so we just got in the game
09:28added some treasure chests monsters drop it
09:31loot and getting making your character more powerful is a part of the game that's important to us
09:38so in terms of cheesing dungeons
09:41it's going to be mostly about combat but you can also destroy the walls of a dungeon and see where
09:45you go
09:47bombs which are the most effective way to do it are consumable so you want to sort of do targeted
09:50destruction within dungeons
09:52we're working on dungeons basically this week and next week they're coming online
09:56so we're going to be testing them out seeing what works what doesn't
09:59this whole thing is a very very much going to be an evolving process
10:04alright anyway so we have some looting game
10:05yeah let's switch my sword
10:06which you switch the sword we've got all sorts of rarities
10:08I think I picked up an epic gem earlier which had some great stats on it
10:14for character customization we have you'll see you want to turn and face the camera
10:18show off the viking hat and stash
10:20oh you have the mustache
10:21yeah so if you open your inventory I have some other stuff unlocked
10:23so we can you can swap out your hat and your head
10:26this is a cosmetic option so we are free to play
10:28and right now the thing we have on our store is cosmetic
10:32and so it's a way to sort of you know donate a couple bucks
10:35support the game and make your character look different
10:38so he's got you know
10:39I like that
10:40it's a good combo I like that one
10:42Viking with a visor
10:44alright open world yeah no instance is
10:47the world is open
10:49there will be multiple worlds and you can jump between them
10:51and there will be ways to carry your power some of your power
10:54some of the things you build between those worlds
10:57it's not going to be gigantic gigantic worlds
11:00they are going to be closer to around 40 people
11:04and that's because we want to cycle them
11:06we want to have it so it feels like you're playing with your friends
11:08and your guild
11:08and give them world objectives is another thing
11:12so worlds are gonna have quests associated with them
11:14you complete those quests you beat the world
11:16it jumps to a new world creates a new world
11:18and you get some kind of reward for beating the world
11:22PvP
11:22so this is a PvE game
11:24I anticipate that we'll do some light PvP in the future
11:28but I don't want to promise that
11:29it is a PvE focused game
11:31and because we are such a small team
11:32we want to make sure we do the things we're focusing on well
11:35so we're going to stay focused on that
11:36I think that's an interesting thing to mention again at Hawaii
11:38you got a lot of bombs from that guy
11:39yeah he drops a lot
11:41interesting thing to mention is that this is a small team project
11:43I think you said we have 11 people on the team right now

12:13but you know this is a small team project
12:15and that's kind of a lot of the spirit behind this as well
12:20is that we are
12:22man you have a lot of bombs
12:23I'll grab a couple questions
12:24building resources will be limited
12:26right now in this current version
12:27they're actually unlimited
12:28we're working on the mechanics starting next week
12:30for how you're going to acquire them
12:32and start placing them and spending them in the world
12:34along with our crafting mechanics

12:37I've seen people asking if there are going to be things like bosses
12:39bosses
12:40definitely bosses
12:41yes 2 bosses
12:43and it is right
12:44it's a action oriented combat system
12:46we have also stats like knockback and stability
12:49which counteracts knockback
12:50monsters will attack the closest thing
12:52so if you're a tank you want a bunch of stability
12:53so the dragon you know will hit you
12:55and you'll basically just stand firm
12:57we also have stats like health and armor
12:59I don't know if you want to fight some guys
13:00and use some abilities here
13:01we've got like smash and charge
13:02which also deform the terrain in the world
13:05our first class we have here is the knight
13:07we anticipate we're going to definitely be building more classes
13:10we're using campus basically our test bed for combat
13:12and stuff right now
13:13once we have all that locked down
13:14we're going to start expanding it into more
13:16I saw someone asking will the alpha invites go out sequentially or randomly
13:21a lot of this is actually we're playing it by ear
13:23this is the first day we're talking about it
13:25we're seeing how much interest we get
13:26but we're really going to
13:29and this is actually going to be the answer to a lot of questions
13:33is we're figuring that out
13:34we're finding out if we get 10 billion people sign up for it
13:38we're going to have to figure out what we do about that
13:40and so we don't know yet is the honest answer to exactly how they'll go out
13:45we do know that we're going to get people into this game very soon
13:48so I saw a question about cube sizes
13:51the cubes that you build with are all the same size
13:53they're untextured so when you put them all together they'll look like much bigger things
13:58the other thing we do is you'll look at like the deco, the weapons, the character models
14:03they are built out of smaller cubes also textured
14:06something else we can do that are cool with the cubes is we can have material types on them
14:10so a water cube, a metal cube, a dirt cube
14:13they'll all have different properties like the way the light reflects off of them and stuff like that
14:17so it will look different based on what you're making
14:22classes, classes actually we want to just throw this pretty wide
14:25we have a very fun world, very light world, very colorful world
14:28we're going to do ninjas, we're going to do cyborgs
14:30we're going to do, I think we were talking about like a cybernetic cowboy
14:33that has some crazy laser pistols as maybe being the second class we make
14:37to make it really different from the knight
14:39in terms of the zones and the biomes that we're going to make
14:43we're going to do the same thing
14:44we're going to theme them closely to these different sort of fantasy
14:47but not necessarily high fantasy or orcs and elves fantasy
14:52mounts, we want to do mounts, we don't have mounts yet
14:56sounds like fun, no reason not to do it, it's on the list
15:01we are getting a lot of new people in here that weren't necessarily here at the beginning
15:04and we're getting a lot of people asking what makes this different from Minecraft
15:08what makes this different from Cube World, what makes it different from Terraria
15:11well Terraria is obviously a bit more different
15:13but you answered that in the beginning but you want to explain again for the new people that are coming
15:18in
15:18sure, jump back in
15:20so I think a lot of what's going to set us apart is especially the progression, the world cycling
15:25the fact that we'll be online, you can connect from anywhere
15:28we're also doing a lot more with quests and dungeon generation that I think those games really do
15:33a lot of that focus on adventure and exploration is really what's going to set us apart
15:38why the name Trove? because you hunt treasure
15:41yeah, it was a collection of wonderful things and that's what we think of as the game
15:46the journey to name the game was a very long one actually
15:51we're probably going to post, we have a photo of a whiteboard of a meeting that we had
15:58literally last week, literally last week we were still figuring out what to name this game
16:02this is how much of like early we're bringing this out
16:05last week this game had no name
16:07we call it Kiwi internally, that was just the project name
16:11and we're sitting there trying to figure out what should we call this
16:14since we're going to tell people about it next week
16:16and so we'll probably post the photo as you can see
16:19we have like a ridiculously like a hundred names on the whiteboard
16:22that we had a voting system and this whole thing
16:25and that isn't even how we ended up with the name Trove
16:29but that was one of the steps in the long journey
16:32yeah, and so I saw a few of you kind of follow up my dungeon comment
16:35saying that games like Cube World do have dungeons
16:37and you're totally right
16:39we do think though that there's areas there to explore
16:41like if you look at like what a lot of roguelikes are doing
16:44I said like way too many times in that sentence
16:46but roguelike is acceptable
16:48roguelikes do is with the creation of their dungeons
16:50where they create rooms of different sizes
16:52with different permutations of things within them
16:54and different combinations of that
16:55we think no one's really explored that
16:56and voxel based worlds are a really cool place to do that
16:59and especially an adventure oriented one
17:02so we're really excited to be making that stuff
17:04and we've actually bumped that up on the list
17:05because one of our devs was just Gung Ho Court
17:07who you saw in the video was Gung Ho to be making it
17:09and we think it's something that will set us apart
17:11so we're going to be putting that in
17:12and showing it off within the next couple weeks

18:14what we are going to do to start with
18:15as you guys play the game
18:17as we play the game
18:17these things might change
18:18we might decide that we need
18:19more protection
18:20less protection
18:21so on and so forth
18:22but what we're going to do
18:23is we're actually going to give you something
18:24we're calling a cornerstone
18:25which is your own part of the world
18:27it actually is going to travel with you between worlds
18:29you can place it down in new worlds
18:30that is your protected space to build whatever you want
18:32it's going to be your home base
18:34you can put down crafting stations there
18:36you can make it look however you want
18:37you can take the things you've collected in the world
18:39and place them there
18:40and then it's persistent
18:41it sticks with you like anything else
18:42if you go out in the world
18:43and you want to build some stuff
18:45also cool
18:46that we are thinking about
18:47taking and carrying over to new worlds
18:49but that's also destroyable
18:50so someone else can come into your sweet castle
18:52you put down
18:53and they can throw some bombs at it
18:54and that's kind of part of the fun of these games
18:56so we're going to
18:57our plan is to let that go
18:58the cornerstone is the thing I'm most excited about

19:01being able to take what you build
19:02and move it from world to world
19:04is I want to say something that's
19:06that's never been done in this style of game before

19:09I think that's one of our new features
19:11I haven't played every single game that exists in the entire world

19:18yes cornerstones are safe from destruction
19:20except for your own destruction
19:21obviously you can modify it however you want

19:29we think that minecraft kind of has the
19:32dig randomly in all directions thing covered
19:35we're not really interested in making that game
19:37it'll be more about exploring the world to find the resources to craft with
19:42a lot of dungeon resources and above ground resources
19:44yeah
19:45like that
19:45not to say there won't be things hidden underground too
19:47for you to randomly find
19:48but it's not the focus
19:49that's not going to be the optimal way to go find stuff
19:52there's a lot of questions about you know
19:53kind of stuff that we added you know
19:55magic and stuff like that
19:57and you know
19:58I know that you guys are looking at
20:00all possibilities
20:02something we said in the beginning that's worth reiterating is
20:05we
20:06a big part of how this game is going to be developed going forward
20:09is talking to the community
20:10figuring out what you guys like
20:11we
20:12were so open to this game changing based on your guys feedback
20:16that like
20:17you guys may implement something
20:19and then it turns out that it's so popular and so amazing
20:21that the game
20:23the core game design shifts to be based around that one thing
20:26I mean
20:26I don't know what that one thing would be
20:28but that's a possibility
20:29like we're not being
20:30we don't have like
20:31the game design doc for the final game
20:33you know planned out
20:34we're putting things in
20:35figuring out what's going on
20:36we're going to put our backlog out there
20:37we're going to tell you guys what we're working on

23:39so like physics make less sense

23:44i can go higher

23:46we don't really know about the odds for alpha
23:48that is

24:26where the very first time
24:26you invite everyone internally to get on
24:28and the game actually works
24:29usually the first time you do that
24:31because you've never done it before
24:32you don't know what bugs exist
24:33they're gonna
24:34it's gonna crash galore
24:35and it actually didn't do that
24:37which was incredible
24:38yeah
24:38so uh
24:39fall damage
24:39as soon as we have a way to mitigate fall damage
24:41we're gonna look at it again
24:42but right now it's so fun to build up

24:45there's no fall damage

24:55so what we're actually gonna sell
24:57is still up in the air

25:00locked off areas of content
25:02you're gonna be playing with everyone
25:03you're always going to be able to play with everyone else playing the game
25:06right now what we're selling is purely cosmetic stuff
25:08that will definitely expand in some way
25:09um
25:10but it's still really too early to start talking about any of the other stuff

25:14the business model stuff is less important than getting people in here and finding out what's fun

25:18but it's something that you know we're figuring it out just like the rest of everything

25:29um vertically we're 256

25:34the expansiveness of the world
25:35it is effectively unlimited

25:37we actually want to have worlds that are completable
25:39that cycle
25:40so they aren't going to be actually unlimited
25:41um
25:42but we'll kind of design that to be the size that is the most fun
25:44and we'll be learning that as we develop it
25:47someone said can you go underground and mine
25:50um
25:50you can go underground
25:51you can mine
25:52you can find some stuff
25:52um as before
25:54uh we're not really making this game about mining
25:56but it is fun to dig through mountains
25:57so we're going to put you know
25:58you're going to get some resources
25:59you're going to pick up some blocks
26:00uh that's actually something we have on the schedule to start working on next week
26:03so if you watch us during the next live stream you might even see it
26:06got a weird shader bug on this uh flickery stuff

26:13we're you're not going to go through and tap tap tap tap tap tap tap on rocks
26:17and get ore and then convert it into things
26:19um we
26:19we all love minecraft
26:21we think minecraft does that really well
26:22we're trying to do something different with this

26:31it's not rift

26:37so i can't tell it that we're playing uh trove
26:39you can only play things that it actually knows exist
26:42and yesterday it didn't know it existed
26:44so

26:46but we're actually at the end of our time here
26:48uh we're actually already a minute over
26:49but we did start like a minute late because of the uh
26:51so the
26:52the contest i was doing in rift
26:54so uh and yeah for those of you just coming in
26:57this game is trove
26:58and defiance is going to start in about 60 seconds
27:01because i'm going to kick you guys out
27:03and we're going to do defiance
27:04i did see some questions asking is trove going to be a regular part of the friday live streams
27:08eventually yes
27:09it might be back next week
27:11i think um it's really going to depend on um
27:12we got to figure that out
27:13again i know we keep saying that
27:15but the bottom line is like
27:15we put this out as early as possible
27:17maybe maybe this will be a regular part of our fridays
27:20um almost definitely once we start letting alpha people in
27:23it will be a regular part
27:24um so that we can play with alpha players and such
