00:00This is such a heated issue. Democrats have been digging their heels in. Do you see a way through this
00:06here right now? No, I mean, you know, we're having a bunch of meetings that frankly could be emails. I
00:15just don't at this juncture. Hope it changes. But this juncture, I don't see an agreement. And the disagreement, of
00:24course, is ice. And I think this is a fair statement.
00:29Peter can correct me if I'm wrong. My Democratic colleagues want to put major restrictions on ice, some of which,
00:35in my judgment, will render ice inoperable. Now, if you ask the Democrats, they say they're needed changes. But we're
00:45way far apart. And I do not see any resolution right now.
00:49Senator Welch, I mean, Democrats have gotten some concessions from this administration, whether you're talking about Kristi Noem, whether you're
00:58talking about some of the roving patrols and having Homan going into Minneapolis.
01:04Is there a certain point where you do need to compromise once? I mean, you're seeing these long lines at
01:13airports. You're seeing voters frustrated with with this shutdown.
01:18No, they're very frustrated. And I am, too. I mean, there's two things that I think are really important. One
01:25is, I want to fund every single thing where we don't have any disagreement.
01:29The only place where we do have a disagreement is ice. And of course, that follows what happened in Minneapolis.
01:35OK, it was a tragedy.
01:37So we I can have a different point of view than President Trump on ice. And that's a fair and
01:42square debate.
01:43And voters can decide who they prefer, whose position they prefer. But there's no impediment to us opening up literally
01:50every other element of government that's affected, like even the Border Patrol.
01:56Like TSA? TSA, the Border Patrol, the Coast Guard.
01:59Why is that not happening? What's standing in the way of that?
02:01Because there's a hostage taking kind of approach. And that's the mutual back and forth accusation that we're holding it
02:09hostage or they're holding it hostage.
02:10But the bottom line here is we really do have an issue with ice. And it's a complicated one because
02:16of what happened in Minneapolis.
02:19So it doesn't look like the hostage taking is going to go away. Whoever, whoever is the one taking whatever
02:24hostage.
02:25Peter's raised a really interesting point. Yeah.
02:28And I would agree with him up to a point. Let's open up everything but ice. OK, let's open it
02:36up.
02:36Do you think you could get your colleagues to agree to that if you want me to finish?
02:42But I can tell you what's going to happen next. The Republicans are going to put a reconciliation bill on
02:49the floor that only requires Republican votes to fund ice.
02:55And the Democrats don't have the vote to stop us. Now, that to me is a resolution to this.
03:00I don't think my Democratic friends are going to like it, but that's what's going to happen if we do
03:06it that way.
