00:00You know, I want to just say one thing to you, and that's the word interactive.
00:04Surely we've been making interactive games for 20 years, haven't we?
00:07Well, 30 years.
00:09Well, no, I don't think we have.
00:11Because that thing in our hands, that thing that's evolved in our hands,
00:16it's got more and more complex, it's got more and more buttons,
00:18actually has been the biggest barrier to what we want to create.
00:23Because what we want to create is a connection to our worlds.
00:27And that's what I believe Natal does.
00:30And if you leave with anything today, then leave with this thought.
00:34What designers and what this industry does with Natal
00:38will change the landscape of games that we play.
00:41Anyway, we've been playing around with it at Lionhead for a few months now.
00:47And a week ago, a film crew came out and filmed this video.
00:52Why don't we take a look at it now?
00:55Science fiction writers, filmmakers,
00:57they haven't imagined what we're able to do today.
01:00We've been experimenting with something here.
01:02I'd like you to meet a boy called Milo.
01:06He's a character that can recognise us.
01:10He can recognise our faces.
01:11He can recognise our voices.
01:12He can recognise emotions in us.
01:14And this is Claire.
01:15She's going to introduce you to Milo.
01:18Hiya, Milo. How are you doing?
01:20Hi, Claire. You OK?
01:22Actually, I'm a bit nervous.
01:24You? Nervous? I don't believe it.
01:26This is the first time that thousands of people are going to see this.
01:31Thousands of people?
01:32Here we're seeing Claire being recognised.
01:35And the emotion in Claire's voice being recognised.
01:38And that emotion reflecting in Milo's face.
01:41Those are all being seen for the first time.
01:44So listen, I was thinking today you should let me beat you at football again.
01:47That is if you've finished your homework.
01:51You have finished your school project.
01:54What happened there is that Claire knew Milo so well,
02:00she knew when he was worried about something.
02:03The head was down, he wasn't looking at the camera so much,
02:06and this is about you meeting a character, a person.
02:10Well, why don't I help you with yours?
02:11Then yours will be brilliant.
02:13Hmm. All right.
02:16I could have just tried to catch some fish.
02:18draw some pictures in my journal.
02:21Maybe I'd do OK this time.
02:22I think that was a good idea.
02:25Lift off!
02:28Don't know till I try, do I?
02:30Exactly.
02:31See? I've got everything we need.
02:34Well, great. Let's get started then.
02:36You've got to put these goggles on.
02:37Goggles?
02:39Put them on like this.
02:42OK.
02:43What? Like that?
02:45Claire has been thrown a pair of goggles.
02:47Notice what she did.
02:48This wasn't acted.
02:50She felt the need to reach down for those goggles.
02:53Now, everybody, every single person that has experienced this reaches down
02:58because they feel so connected to Milo's world.
03:02Cool.
03:02So what are we doing?
03:05Do I have to stand at the edge?
03:10Go on.
03:11Put your hands in.
03:13It's not too cold.
03:16Ha!
03:17I bet the fish think we're a monster.
03:20Cheeky.
03:22I've got to swish the water about a bit.
03:26See if you can touch a fish.
03:30There Claire is, in Milo's world.
03:34She's in that pond.
03:36All right.
03:36Every hand movement is being recognised.
03:39Being able to touch fish, being able to swish the water with her hand.
03:44Everyone who's experienced it, their hairs are standing up on the back of their head.
03:49Now, what's about to happen is some real magic.
03:52Well, you're good at drawing.
03:54They're only fish, but they're trickier than you think.
03:57Well, here, I'll have a go.
03:59Right.
04:00I'm going to do a body and a tail with a big fin and a smiley face.
04:07There we go.
04:08What do you think?
04:10Look at what just happened.
04:12Orange.
04:13Claire drew a picture on a piece of paper.
04:15The piece of paper was held up to Milo.
04:20Natal recognised the piece of paper, scanned the piece of paper in.
04:24Milo looked at that piece of paper, recognised the shape, recognised the colour,
04:28and was never unable to get on with this project.
04:30This is true technology that science fiction has not even written about.
04:34Don't get your mum's birthday.
04:35And this works today, now.
04:44So, what we've chosen to do with that technology has been a dream of mine for 20 years.
04:50We have chosen to create an experience where you can meet what I believe is a real character,
04:57that understands you, that understands your voices, your emotions, that's fascinated about
05:01your life.
05:02Now, you may look at that video and wonder whether it's true or real.
05:06But here's the fact.
05:08We're showing this behind closed doors at E3 to a selected audience.
05:13And that selected audience will be able to meet Milo themselves.
05:16And will be able to talk to Milo and interact with his world.
05:20Thank you very much.
05:21I hope you agree, this is a landmark in computer entertainment.
