00:35To tell you more about how the funds will be used, here is Tony Whitten, director of the program.
00:40The Sumatran elephants are now categorized as critically endangered.
00:45This means that they have a high risk of extinction within our lifetimes.
00:51They have been pressed from every side by the felling of tropical rainforest for oil palm plantations,
01:03for pulp and paper plantations, by agriculture, by normal people felling trees and planting their own crops.
01:13In the 40 years that I've been visiting Sumatra, I've seen two-thirds of the forest habitat disappear under plantations
01:22and other forms of agriculture.
01:24That habitat is where the elephants used to live.
01:27They can't live there anymore.
01:30You can't squeeze the same number of elephants into an ever smaller block of forest.
01:35And as a result of that, there is kind of a cliff.
01:39There's really nothing quite like seeing an elephant in the wild.
01:42And our guide, who was a ranger in the park at the time, signalled to stop.
01:46Ahead of us did this majestic male elephant.
01:50And he looked really incredible.
01:52There's nothing quite like that feeling.
01:54I felt completely awestruck.
01:55And felt really insignificant standing, you know, not far away from this majestic looking creature.
02:03You really don't get a sense of what they're like until you see one moving around and interacting with its
02:09natural habitat
02:09and just going about its day-to-day business.
02:12It was one of the most amazing things I'd ever seen.
02:15We're very touched and very proud that the gamers of Sumtycoon voted for our project and to be supportive.
02:24And we're very grateful to Microsoft that they donated the money to us.
02:27This is going to help us to support the groups in the forest to do our work.
02:35It's an ongoing challenge to do that.
02:38And it's just the latest of our exciting grants that we've received.
02:43It's contributions like this that make a real difference in the life of these rare endangered species.
02:48Microsoft will have a new community challenge for you every month.
