00:04Space War
00:06An epic battle for the future of whatever fantasy world you're currently inhabiting
00:11A tightly contested football match between some cars
00:15Every day gamers find themselves engaged in battles fraught with danger
00:21And epic in scale
00:23But there's one battle that transcends the entire medium of video games
00:27A battle that rages pretty much every night
00:31With a fallout that lasts well into the following morning
00:34Shall I do what I know I should and go to bed
00:38Or should I have just one more game?
00:41We touched upon this never-ending mind war between Nighttime U and Next Morning U
00:46In seven arguments every gamer has had at least once
00:49But feel the games that sparked the debate most strongly deserve a video all to themselves
00:55And that's the video you're watching right now
00:58Seven mega-addictive video games you can't stop playing until at least 4am
01:04We say at least because with our first entry
01:07Destruction Derby meets FIFA mashup Rocket League
01:10It's entirely possible to find yourself playing right through the night
01:15And well into the following morning
01:17Oh god
01:18Cue the hastily put together texts to your boss about how ill you are
01:23Rob says he's had a dodgy Chinese and he's not going to come in today
01:26The day after having a dodgy Mexican
01:27And the solemn promise to yourself that you'll never ever stay up that late playing video games again
01:34It's easy to see why Rocket League makes our list
01:37It's insanely simple for starters
01:40Drive a car into a beach ball and make it go in the goal
01:43Do this more than your opponents
01:45Win
01:45But it's that kind of clean easy fun that makes Rocket League so playable
01:51Every game you play makes you a little bit better
01:54You'll unlock cooler stuff for your motor
01:57You'll score outrageous goals
01:59Feel compelled to avenge cruel defeats
02:01And form a messy Neymar Suarez-like bond with your teammates
02:06And each game only lasts five minutes
02:09So, you know
02:10One more?
02:11Yep
02:11Next up, we've got Destiny, a game that slurps up your life hours like a giant time-sucking vacuum cleaner
02:19If you're in on Destiny, you'll know exactly what I mean
02:22There's always one more little thing you can do before hitting the sack
02:27The game cleverly structures itself so fun can be picked at varying lengths from a menu that acts as a
02:34sort of enjoyment vending machine
02:36The daily? That'll be 20 minutes please
02:39The weekly strike? Give it an hour or so just to be safe
02:43Oh, you want Prisoner of Elders do you? Three hours please?
02:47The fact Destiny is so easily digestible makes it perfect if you've only got a spare 30 minutes or so
02:53You could grind for some Relic Iron or have a quick round of control in the Crucible
02:59And then the Nightfall wouldn't hurt, would it? We'll blast through it quickly
03:02And then we should probably just head to the Tower to decode those engrams we got
03:07And then a few more rounds of Crucible to test out the new weapon
03:10And then just a few bounties because it's nearly levelled up now
03:14And then just one more, oh my god, it's four in the morning, I've got a meeting in five hours
03:18It's the loot that does it, small nuggets of reward, sprinkled regularly into the pond of progression
03:25And like eager gaming goldfish, we circle, waiting to gobble them up
03:30And the next game on our list is the undisputed loot master, Diablo 3
03:37Is there anything more rewarding in life than setting out on a massive adventure
03:42A mewling level one baby, weak and naked
03:45And slowly, inexorably grinding your way to ultimate power?
03:50No is the answer, and hacking, slashing and looting your way through Diablo 3
03:54Is satisfying like licking chocolate icing out of a bowl
03:58Only the icing is sweet loot, and every lick makes you more powerful
04:02There's something about the grind, isn't there?
04:05It hurts, but it's a pain that tells you
04:08Yes, you're doing it, you're getting stronger
04:12The fact you can get better loot by playing with others
04:15And bumping up the difficulty level gives Diablo 3 even more of a hook
04:19And that's where it catches you
04:21It rewards hard work and exploration, feeding you more and more power
04:26Dig in, embrace the grind
04:29The next loot drop might be amazing
04:31And that's when you realise
04:33A you've been playing for 10 hours straight
04:35And B you don't care
04:36What's in the next chest?
04:38We had a hard time choosing our next entry
04:41Which is basically all about big open world fantasy RPGs
04:45That throw more quests at you than they do square miles of beautifully rendered countryside
04:50Skyrim, Dragon Age Inquisition, The Witcher 3
04:53I've been guilty of playing all three well into the small hours
04:57Just so I can complete one more quest or game
05:00Just one more level
05:01You stayed up until 5am in Skyrim's character creator
05:06Trying to make a Khajiit look like a badger
05:10Well, that was a complete waste of time, wasn't it?
05:13Anyway, I settled on gorgeous MMO and my personal game of forever Final Fantasy XIV for this next entry
05:21For a very specific reason
05:23And it's this
05:24The problem with planet-dwarfing fantasy RPGs and their myriad quests
05:29Is that to stop playing them you have to reach a point where it feels okay to stop and go
05:34to bed
05:35You can't simply quit in the middle of a quest, it's just not good RPG etiquette
05:39Similarly, if you're close to levelling up you have to murder a couple more small fry mobs just to topple
05:45yourself over the threshold
05:46But my main problem with Final Fantasy XIV is that I've sort of developed this ridiculous habit
05:52Whereby my dungeon raiding paladin Riberys Targaryen has to go to bed inside the actual game
06:00Before I can log off and go to real life bed
06:02And to do that I have to clear all current side quests
06:06Riberys can't go to bed with a clogged up journal
06:08And also he has to take his armour off because, you know, sleeping in all of that would be preposterous
06:14It takes me about 90 minutes to get ready for bed in Final Fantasy XIV
06:18Which is approximately 89 more minutes than it takes me in real life
06:25One more quest, one more level, one more entry on my hunting log
06:30I'm wrapped in your never-ending MMO embrace Final Fantasy XIV
06:34Never let me go
06:36Remember about five minutes ago when we talked about football but with cars simulator Rocket League
06:41Well, it turns out football but with actual football is equally addictive
06:45Especially when it's the actual football of FIFA 15 and it's various modes of cheeky
06:51Go on have another go gameplay
06:52It's career mode that does it for me
06:55I like to create a player who looks like me but with more hair
06:59And who's approximately 1760 times better at football
07:03Stick him in the Palace first team and bust the Premier League golden boot race wide open
07:09Naturally this means I'm in a constant state of just one more game obsession
07:14If Palace win and Roberto Piazzoni scores then I have to play again
07:19Because momentum is with me and momentum is crucial in football
07:22But then if I lose I also have to play again because I can't quit the game on a defeat
07:26As I'd then be in bed all night seething about it
07:29There's another thing in FIFA as well isn't there with the packs
07:33The packs and the cards that you can trade
07:36Dave plays it a bit I think
07:43RINALDO! RINALDO! RINALDO! RINALDO!
08:02We're in dangerous territory with our final two entries
08:06Firstly because they both feature gameplay conducive to completely forgetting that time is even a thing that exists
08:12And secondly they're both on PS Vita which means you can play them in bed
08:17And therefore lie to yourself and pretend you're getting an early night
08:21First up Olly Olly 2 welcome to Ollywood
08:25Welcome to no sleepville more like population everyone who's played the game ever
08:31It's amazingly slick wonderfully fast and relentlessly playable allowing you to restart at the tap of a button
08:38And therefore gloss over any mistakes with stupidly amazing combos
08:43It's a series of ultra cool moments
08:46Each flip trick and grind a blazing millisecond of brilliance
08:50The problem with blazing milliseconds though is that when you add hundreds of thousands of them together
08:56You still get blazing seven hours
09:00Honourable mentions to the likes of Hotline Miami and Trials Fusion here
09:05Two other games that entice you with instant restarts and reward you with intense flashy wonderment
09:10Practically all the time
09:12Slow burners these are not
09:15But Olly Olly 2 makes the grade because there's always something extra you can do
09:19Beat that score
09:21Do it faster
09:22Chuck in some revert manuals
09:24Make every landing perfect
09:25Now do it on pro
09:27Now unlock rad mode
09:28Now go to bed
09:29Joking
09:30You can't go to sleep yet because we've got one more game left now
09:34I don't think I've actually mentioned this title in a Friday feature before
09:38Because what this game did to me was so intense that I try not to talk about it
09:45Persona 4 Golden
09:47I'll never forgive you
09:49Yes, yes, so you're one of the best JRPGs ever made
09:52And you've got a soundtrack that made my ears cry waxy tears of delight
09:56But please, can I sleep now?
09:59What's that Persona 4?
10:00If I just make some envelopes my diligence will increase
10:03Well, why didn't you say so?
10:05Persona 4's genius lies in the fact it divides your in-game time into days
10:11You go to school, you learn new skills, you form relationships with your classmates
10:15You save people from a mysterious enemy who murders them by sucking them into a television
10:21The crux being you'll always find yourself wanting to play just one more day
10:26Just one more
10:27I mean they only take about 10 real life minutes so another one won't hurt
10:31It also doesn't help that Persona 4 has one of the most intriguing plotlines in any game I've played
10:37And a cast so rich and likeable you end up feeling slightly deflated when you put down the PS Vita
10:43And realise they're not your actual friends
10:45The solution being of course to not put the PS Vita down and just keep playing Persona 4 forever
10:52After I've sent a little text of course
10:56Hi Nathan
