00:00Yeah, I think I agree with you on that one.
00:01Another surprising thing that happened today,
00:03they restructured kicker Jake Elliott's contract.
00:08A lot of people thought maybe they'd bring in some competition for Elliott
00:11in training camp because he hasn't had the greatest of seasons
00:14over the last two.
00:15But is this signaling Elliott's definitely back with no competition?
00:19I think so because it's a decent number.
00:22It's around $4 million now that is guaranteed for him.
00:26I'll be honest with you, Bill, I don't like it.
00:30But Elliott has been awesome, obviously, for this franchise.
00:34Huge moments, really steady for a lot of years.
00:38But the last couple of years have looked different for him.
00:41And it's been a little shaky.
00:44And there's a chance that he just sort of gets back into his normal groove
00:48and he's rocking and this proves out to be no big deal.
00:52But there is definitely another scenario out there
00:55where the trend continues from the last two seasons
00:57and people are pretty agitated in the city
01:00because they've kind of committed themselves to a kicker
01:03that has shown signs that maybe he's not as steady as he once was.
01:07And so I understand the need to identify contracts
01:11that can help free up cap space to benefit you in other areas.
01:15But personally, I would have left it alone with Elliott.
01:18I would go into the training camp with competition, push him a little bit,
01:24and give yourself some options.
01:26I mean, as good as he's been, you can't be tied to the same kicker forever.
01:29And if he's starting to show some signs,
01:32like maybe it's going to go in a different direction for him,
01:35then I don't know why you would then turn around
01:37and guarantee that kind of money.
01:40Yeah, I'm right there with you.
01:41And I would have to think Elliott's surprise.
01:43I remember talking to him at his locker after the San Francisco 49ers playoff loss,
01:48and he was extremely emotional saying he understood this was a business.
01:52Like, I don't think he thought it was a guarantee he was going to be back next year.
01:56I'm just surprised they wouldn't bring in competition, at least in training camp.
02:01I'm right there with you, man.
02:02I don't love it.
02:02I don't love it at all.
02:04Yeah, I mean, maybe they can still pivot at some points.
02:07Like, all right, they go into the year and it's not really working out.
02:09And then they decide, okay, we have some other guys on our workout list
02:12that we can turn to eventually.
02:15And I understand that he's built up a lot of clout
02:18and that they have faith in him looking at sort of the big picture.
02:22But, you know, if you just cut the last couple seasons
02:24and are looking at that specifically, then it draws a bit of a different painting.
02:29So, you know, yeah, I'm not in favor of the way that they did it,
02:34but let's see how it turns out.
