00:00The death of Nigerian socialite Elena Jessica Ngopara following a cosmetic surgery caused a
00:06lot of buzz across the internet. The young influencer allegedly underwent surgery for
00:12a Brazilian butt lift or BBL for the second time but she did not make it out alive. But how
00:19could
00:19a cosmetic procedure lead to death you may wonder. Welcome to the flip side. Across Africa there has
00:26been a noticeable increase in the number of women undergoing cosmetic procedures. Several reports
00:32from across Nigeria and other African countries indicate that demand for body sculpting procedures
00:39has increased significantly in recent years driven by social media, celebrity culture and the global
00:46trend toward aesthetic enhancement. Studies also show that Brazilian butt lift procedures have
00:52become especially popular among young urban women. There's a global trend for liposuction,
01:00BBL, breast surgery, Botox. There are increasing number of people who are engaging in it. I think
01:08part of those things that is helping is social media. We should also not forget that there are many more
01:14doctors online now on social media educating people on what this whole process is all about. The death of
01:20Elena Jessica sparked a lot of grief and outrage but what could be the reason behind the trend? Could it
01:27be that
01:28women lack self-confidence or is there pressure for women to look a certain way? I feel that women have,
01:37different women have different reasons for doing BBL. Some women just do it because they don't want to go to
01:43the gym to
01:43stress in the gym rather to get that body. So they're just doing it mainly for themselves while some other
01:49women do it because they want the male attention.
02:03While many have opinions about why women undergo such procedures, what is clear is that different
02:09women do it for different reasons. Recent reporting suggests that social pressure plays a major role.
02:16Social media platforms frequently promote idealized images of curvy bodies, often edited or surgically enhanced.
02:25Many women say cosmetic surgery helps them feel more confident while others pursue it for career visibility,
02:32especially in entertainment, fashion or influencer culture. Research also indicates that rising awareness,
02:39reduced stigma and wider availability of cosmetic clinics across African cities have contributed to the
02:47growing popularity of procedures like BBL. Some people argue that women do it to attract attention from men,
02:56but do men really find it attractive?
02:59All men are not the same, so it's just that they might be attracted to that because even though it's
03:05BBL,
03:06it's not natural or anything, but me, I like it natural. Definitely some men appreciate it,
03:11either it's artificial or God-giving, whichever way. Some men, that's even what they want, so they don't mind if
03:18it's artificial or God-giving. But for me personally, it's a turn off. BBL women are attractive if you are
03:24with them
03:25for friendship, relationship. But when I'm talking about for a man who wants to settle down,
03:31you will not be looking at BBL. Because for me, I don't know the complications that will come with it.
03:36Well, maybe women do not do it for the men. Maybe it really is for their self-confidence.
03:42And maybe it is because of societal pressure to look a certain way. Whatever the reason may be,
03:48what is often overlooked is the serious risk involved in cosmetic procedures. BBL is considered
03:54the most dangerous one worldwide. Recent health reporting shows that BBL has the highest mortality rate
04:01among common cosmetic surgeries. Medical findings show that deaths are often linked to fat entering
04:08the bloodstream during the procedure, which can cause a fat fat embolism. Although safety has improved
04:16over the years, experts warn that the risk remains higher than in other elective surgeries.
04:23BBL is still one of the most dangerous aesthetic passing surgeries. In the past, it used to be
04:33around 1 in 3,000, but now you have it 1 in 15,000. I try to explain the risk
04:38in layman's language.
04:41But definitely, you don't want to tell a patient you can die. I'm not sure any Saudi
04:46don't want to tell any patient you can die. And that is the flip side.
