00:05This time, on Highway Through Hell, off-road, and up a tree, reliable gets tricky, on a blind
00:20curve, Jamie heads upstream, and holiday cheer, for the biggest toy run ever, in Hope BC, Christmas
00:44is in the air.
00:54Drivers on Highway 1, push to get home for the holidays, but stuck on a blind corner, a disabled
01:11utility truck, called to the scene, Jamie Davis, is on a mission to retrieve it, with swamper,
01:34Martin Steffek.
01:36Yep.
01:38A service truck has lost its back wheels, it's on an off-ramp, and on a bad corner.
01:45With drivers racing by, Jamie, takes control of the traffic.
01:56For me, this job is all about safety.
01:59We're on a bad corner, you don't have good line of sight here.
02:03No!
02:04No, more.
02:05More.
02:06I'm going to oversee everything.
02:08There.
02:08That'll keep it.
02:12Okay.
02:13Let's go.
02:16But on the narrow six foot shoulder.
02:19It's dangerous, you know.
02:20In a 100 kilometer per hour zone.
02:25Drivers on the holiday rush.
02:27They don't seem to slow down for us, and they shouldn't move over.
02:32Pose a close threat.
02:33It's our lives too, you know that matter.
02:37Very easily, this truck could be hit by another truck coming around the corner.
02:41Oh my lord.
02:44Doesn't see it, bang.
02:46There's just going to be flagging for a bit.
02:50Please slow down.
03:16On highway one through Hope.
03:18So just take that one up.
03:20Okay.
03:20As far as you can go.
03:22Just five minutes from his yard.
03:24We're going to block the whole off ramp, Bob.
03:27Jamie and his team handle their own traffic control.
03:31You can't see coming around that blind corner.
03:34To remove a utility truck from a bad spot.
03:39I want you to stay about right in here.
03:42Yeah.
03:43But with no rear axle, they can't lift it from the front.
03:47In order to pick this thing up by the back end, the tow truck's actually got to be facing the
03:51wrong way in traffic.
03:53Signaling to drivers ahead of the corner, Jamie will block off the exit.
03:58Enabling his wrecker to drive the wrong way down the off ramp to the wreck.
04:08Okay you guys, you can come up now.
04:11With the off ramp closed.
04:14Oh, here we go.
04:15Long haul expert Mark Richards drives against the flow in a 35 ton record.
04:24I could not hook up to the front of this vehicle because it's his rear that's gone.
04:29I'm left with no choice.
04:31I have to go the wrong way on the highway.
04:35Let's do it.
04:36Also pitching in tonight, Jamie's latest recruit, Maxim Chamberlain Norman.
04:43There's not much thing that scared me right.
04:46Oh, look at this guy.
04:50Wow.
04:51But you never know if there's a transport that's going to come and not going to break.
04:57Whoa.
04:59Safely in position.
05:02Got to make sure she lines up.
05:04They move quickly.
05:06Stop.
05:08Bring it back a little.
05:09Whoop.
05:10To hook up.
05:13And get off the highway.
05:15Okay, stop.
05:17Yeah, now go up a bit.
05:20Yeah, there you go.
05:22I'm good on my side.
05:24Me too.
05:25Yeah, it's going to be a tricky, tricky haul.
05:27With the wreck loaded up.
05:29Put the straps on.
05:31Yep.
05:33Ratchet straps.
05:34Lock it down.
05:37You're good on your side.
05:38We are good to go.
05:40We are good to go.
05:42Utility truck in tow.
05:45Jamie will escort Mark's wrecker against the flow of traffic to the nearest turnaround.
05:53We got a little bit of a scary thing here to back up in traffic.
05:57Okay.
05:57Oncoming drivers.
05:59Okay, so you're going to follow me and back up and stay over that side.
06:02Continue to race by at over 100 kilometers an hour.
06:07Keep my lights off until I get to the other side.
06:09Yeah.
06:09Until you go to make the right turn.
06:11Okay.
06:11Okay.
06:13There's a fairly tricky maneuver to do what we're doing here.
06:16This isn't something we do every day.
06:19Well, I've never done this way before.
06:22You ready to go there, Mark?
06:24Yep.
06:25Okay, we're leaving now.
06:28It's a very scary feeling going the opposite way on traffic.
06:34Good morning.
06:37Good luck.
06:38Good luck.
06:52A lot to compact in snow now.
06:57400 kilometers northeast.
07:00They're flipping a little bit.
07:03Near Revelstoke, BC.
07:06I heard there was a big wreck.
07:10The visibility is not great.
07:13A Benz towing 50 ton hurdles along Highway 1.
07:18With lead operator, Mike Topperchak.
07:22This section of highway is going to be a little bit foggy at times.
07:25That doesn't help matters.
07:27It's been a busy night up here tonight.
07:30Highway crew is trying to keep up.
07:31But there's only so much you can do on a day like this.
07:34Every available hand is out making sure the highway stays open.
07:38Mike is the operations manager for the day-to-day functions in Revelstoke.
07:44Very focused, highly skilled.
07:47Definitely the right guy.
07:52Just ahead.
07:58A refrigeration trailer knocked clean off its hitch.
08:03How the heck do you do that?
08:06Traveling eastbound.
08:08The loaded semi lost traction.
08:11Crossing lanes.
08:13Decoupling as it crashed.
08:17It's well in a ditch.
08:19Arriving at the site.
08:22Mike.
08:23See here.
08:26Gets a peek at the trailer's frozen goods.
08:31French fries.
08:36This thing's probably right off.
08:38But we also need to get that cargo salvaged as quickly as possible,
08:41especially with a perishable load like this.
08:44While he waits for an unload crew,
08:49the highway's foreman is determined to clear the tractor.
08:54Their job is to make sure that the road is flowing
08:56as freely and smoothly as possible.
09:00And we're in obstruction on that road right now.
09:03Okay, ready to start pulling here.
09:11Mike winches with a line to the tractor's frame.
09:18But the rear axles...
09:20Not really great, eh?
09:22...are deep in the ditch.
09:24As I'm pulling, I'm watching how the wreck's reacting.
09:27I need to put down and re-rig somewhere better to get a better angle.
09:31That's going to be a little bit of a head-scratcher.
09:34Put into an ugly lip.
09:39It's, uh, it's not pretty.
09:41On Highway 1 near Revelstoke,
09:45Mike from Ben's towing adds a second line...
09:49Yeah, that'll work.
09:50...to dislodge a mangled wreck.
09:59I'm going to try and bring the tractor up without bending or breaking the frame.
10:03Right now, the problem's just going to be getting it to the road in one piece.
10:08Swapping a line to the far side...
10:13...makes for a more gentle lift.
10:16It's all pretty good for a buggered-up unit.
10:20...and Mike's quick thinking...
10:25...gets the damaged unit back on the road.
10:28Perfect.
10:29They don't usually get folded up quite this bad.
10:33But his tractor troubles are just getting started.
10:37There's no really good way to tow a twisted truck like this.
10:41It's not really much choice.
10:44How am I going to pick this up?
10:47Two mangled up.
10:49There's a lot of loose pieces, a lot of loose trim, loose plastic.
10:53There you go.
10:55In this case, the frame is also bent and cracked.
10:58My biggest concern right now is that if we go down the road, that crack will get worse.
11:03And we'll end up with us dropping the wreck on the highway.
11:07Adding to the pressure, highways authorities urgently want the blocked lane clear.
11:16This needs to be off the road.
11:20So we're going to truss it up the best way we can to take it away.
11:27Right there.
11:30With a 10-kilometer drive back to home base...
11:33Perfect.
11:36Oh, yeah, let's see if that's going to hold it.
11:37Mike does what he can with the chains he's got.
11:42Are you taking it to your yard, or are you just going to dump it at the pull-out?
11:45No, I'll come to the yard.
11:46If I can pick it up here and it rolls, it's going to keep going.
11:49I'm not stopping.
11:53Let's see if that's another one.
11:56Now his improvised rigging will be put to the test.
12:03I don't like that.
12:05Any guy in this business likes his twisted metal, likes a puzzle.
12:08And this one is no different.
12:10Watch your toes.
12:20I think that was the frame letting go.
12:23Oh, boy, that's a mess.
12:29Four and a half hours southwest.
12:31Okay, we're leaving now.
12:33On Highway 1 through Hope.
12:35It's nice!
12:37Jamie and his team.
12:38It does play on your nerves.
12:41Are extracting a disabled utility truck.
12:45I can't do a three-point turn on the highway, so I have to come up the highway the wrong
12:50way to get him off the road.
12:53Now this is where it gets kind of dangerous.
12:56With Jamie in the guide truck, Mark's wrecker will tow the wreck half a kilometer against traffic, crossing at a
13:06nearby turnaround.
13:09We're good.
13:35We're good.
13:37problems here.
13:39Jamie leads the way in reverse.
13:42It's the scariest part right here.
13:45This is the kind of job that puts the hair up in the back of your neck.
13:49You have to have all these moving parts there.
13:51Everything has to work just perfectly.
13:55Another semi coming.
13:58It's the person who's not paying attention that scares me the most.
14:03Here's a guy here right now.
14:05Waiting for a break in traffic.
14:07Driving a million miles an hour, doesn't slow down.
14:11As they approach the turnaround.
14:13There's a car coming right now.
14:16Mark picks his window.
14:17As soon as that vehicle goes, we go.
14:19And crosses over.
14:22Okay, go. Go.
14:26Come on, baby.
14:29But the 40-foot combined unit overshoots the turnaround.
14:36And risks being hit if it has to reverse.
14:40He shouldn't have done a wider turn.
14:42Hard right, hard right.
14:44Come on, come on, come on.
14:50You got her.
14:52At last, Mark pulls back into the flow of traffic.
14:58Now I'm a normal truck driving on the highway.
15:02We got the job done.
15:04Perfect.
15:05See how touchy that was?
15:07The moment that he's across in the right way in traffic, I'm happy.
15:13My stress level drops right then and there.
15:15You gotta love that.
15:17Amazing, right?
15:18Risky business, but it's done.
15:21Let you have a good night now.
15:24Merry Christmas.
15:28Near Revelstoke, on Highway 1.
15:31I think that was the frame letting go.
15:34Mike is struggling to hook on to a tractor in rough shape.
15:38This is definitely one of the more twisted ones I've seen in a while.
15:43They don't usually bend the frame that way.
15:48I was worried about dropping it on the way there.
15:54Actually, you know what?
15:54We're going to put it down and rework this.
15:56I'm not at all happy with that.
15:58Adjusting his rigging.
16:01Awesome.
16:04I trust this up enough that it might maybe hold?
16:09Mike reinforces the frame with a chain binder.
16:12It's going to hold together or it's going to cut itself apart for us.
16:15One of the two.
16:16For the 10-kilometer trek to the yard.
16:19We want to bring it up in one piece rather than have it break on the way up.
16:24Okay, watch yourselves.
16:27The re-rig with the chain binder holds.
16:33So we can shut down westbound and I'll slow crawl down the hill.
16:36And with a sign-off from the highway foreman.
16:39Yeah, I cleared that one up really quick.
16:42Mike.
16:42We're going to roll out of here.
16:44Is ready to go.
16:48That's what they need to lift that hole.
16:52You're just going to want to watch out when I go by because I'm not sure how stable this thing
16:55is.
16:56The name of the game is to get the road open.
16:58So push and pull or drag, she's leaving.
17:03The first mangled piece.
17:06Oh, it's still on there.
17:07Is headed to the yard.
17:09Any recovery is a good recovery, right?
17:11Everyone's a challenge and everyone's a little bit different.
17:14This one's a little different.
17:16But with the trailer still on its side.
17:19That's a bit of a mess.
17:21The job is far from over.
17:25Done for the night.
17:32Frosted it right up.
17:3410 kilometers east of Revelstoke.
17:38Haven't cleared that thing yet?
17:40On Highway 1.
17:42Nope.
17:44Last night's sideways semi-trailer awaits recovery.
17:49Not in good shape.
17:53Here to prep the scene, a Ben's towing one ton.
17:57All right.
17:58And an operator hailing from the other side of the globe.
18:02Give it a go.
18:03Max Mitchell.
18:06I'm 28 and originally from New Zealand.
18:09I'm an engineer back home.
18:11Came over here to holiday.
18:14And there was this job available.
18:17And three days later I had a job.
18:19Plan here is just basically get the bogeys out of the way.
18:26Earlier today, an offload crew emptied the load of French fries.
18:32Must have taken them all day to unload that trailer.
18:37Now?
18:38Take it and grab them both axles?
18:40Yeah.
18:41Only the offload company's owner, Bill Bremner, remains.
18:49You've never done one of these?
18:51Not one of these, no.
18:53When you're starting out, you don't really know the limits of the truck.
18:56It's going to be the strongest, I think.
18:58Because I don't think it's going to slide too much.
19:01So you're sort of being thrown into it.
19:05Using doubled up winch lines from his one ton,
19:10Max tries to peel the axles away from the trailer.
19:14You might have to rotate the back end around.
19:17But something...
19:20is catching.
19:22Just hold there for a second, bud.
19:23Sure.
19:24The front end of the bogeys is digging into the frame rail,
19:27which is kind of stopping this corner from coming over.
19:30Luckily for Max,
19:33Bill still has his offload excavator on site.
19:40Free now?
19:43That'll work better.
19:46A gentle nudge.
19:49And the bogeys...
19:52There you go.
19:54...are free...
19:55All right.
19:56...from the eight-foot ditch.
20:01That looked well.
20:03Went pretty smoothly, in all honesty.
20:06With the bogeys out,
20:08Max faces the real challenge.
20:11Like, okay, you've got that stuck down there.
20:16How are you going to get that out?
20:34Do you have a road and weather report?
20:37250 kilometers southwest.
20:39They got a good dump up here.
20:42In the mountains near Kelowna.
20:46They put the car out to drink it and recreating her.
20:51A reliable towing 50-ton ventures far from home base.
20:56Road trip.
20:58With John Dodds on a solo mission.
21:01A little bit more snow up here than I thought there'd be, actually.
21:04I love working by myself.
21:07I am a team player, but sometimes it's just better to be in charge of the scene yourself.
21:12I had about four people try to tell me that I'm going to need a rotator for this job,
21:16and I don't feel I'm going to.
21:22Not too sure what the back road's going to be like up here.
21:26Just off the highway, on a private back road.
21:33A 30-foot camper hangs on a river's edge.
21:38You just never know what you're going to show up to, man.
21:42We're going to have quite the adventure today.
21:48Hey, bud.
21:49How's she going?
21:51John.
21:52Played the truck.
21:53Is greeted by the owner.
21:55Is this going to be home until you build something up here?
21:57Yeah.
21:57Who plans to live in the camper, while building an off-grid home.
22:04She almost went in the creek.
22:06We were towing the fifth wheel up the hill here, and she just started spinning.
22:10And then just slid right back.
22:13This is his home.
22:15It's his livelihood.
22:16Thank God it only went where it did, right?
22:19We've got to try to get this out in one piece.
22:22But before John can get to work.
22:25He barely fits.
22:26He must find a way to get his eight-foot-wide record to the other side.
22:32I've got to lift the trailer over out of my way, and then I can get around it.
22:38John's only option...
22:40I've got to try to get up into this tree here.
22:43...is to get resourceful.
22:46By your right foot, there's a nub.
22:48Your knee's basically on it.
22:49Yeah.
22:50Right there.
22:51I like doing these backroad recoveries with limited room.
22:56It gives you the ability to show off your skill a little bit more.
22:59Yeah, so basically I've got to get to here, so...
23:03Oh yeah, you got it.
23:04Most of the time, you would think of a tree being in your way as an obstacle.
23:11Don't fall.
23:12Don't fall.
23:14I pride myself on making sure I can get something done using my head and thinking outside the box.
23:1920 feet up the tree.
23:22Oh, that was my leverage.
23:26Oh, bye.
23:28John rigs a snatch block to redirect his winch line.
23:34There you are.
23:39That's right.
23:39More risk, more reward.
23:41I couldn't work in an office.
23:44By rigging snatch blocks to trees, John will direct his pull from the opposite side, clearing the way for his
23:52wrecker.
23:55Okay, pull a bit.
23:56See what happens.
23:57With remote control in hand...
24:00This tree's a little thin.
24:03...and a safety line to the owner's truck to stop the camper from sliding into the river.
24:09Watch your head and stuff there.
24:12John tightens up.
24:16We're going to give her a shot and see how she goes.
24:24Once we've got enough room, I'll get around it.
24:28There she goes.
24:31John's sequence of snatch blocks...
24:33Oh, there's a shift.
24:35There it is.
24:36...does the trick.
24:37Okay, I can get around that now.
24:40If it looks good, it looks good, you know?
24:43Okay, I'll back up.
24:47John's 50-ton squeezes through.
24:51You can do anything with a straight stick that you can with a rotator.
24:55It just takes more use of your brain.
25:01The hard part's still ahead of us here.
25:07Oh, yeah, she hit the rock hard.
25:09The home on wheels took a hit going in.
25:12Oh, yeah.
25:13It's bent right up almost into the floor.
25:16And one wrong move could turn the rescue into a write-off.
25:22You don't got to go far.
25:23Oh.
25:24It's down, hung up on a large section of riprap rock.
25:29If I just run a low line across, it's just going to rip the whole bottom out of this trailer.
25:33Rather than winching...
25:36Go to eight inches.
25:38John reaches out with his underlift.
25:42Cheat in there.
25:45Moment of sketchiness.
25:47Booming up gives him lift.
25:51It's crackling.
25:54But as he pulls in...
25:57As a tow company...
26:01Oh.
26:02We are held responsible for any damages that we do to people's units.
26:08I like the sounds of that.
26:13Crockland.
26:14In the hills southeast of Kelowna...
26:18This is going to be the sketchy, sketchy part.
26:20An off-grid camper rescue...
26:24A little dodgy.
26:26...is banking...
26:27The sound is crunching.
26:29...on John Dodd's underlift.
26:32What I am worried about is all the noise I'm hearing up at the front tongue of the trailer.
26:38To be someone's actual home, especially with how fragile these things are,
26:42it's very important we get this out in one piece.
26:45Just keep an eye on this little crack and...
26:48Yeah, crack.
26:52What's happening is we're getting a bite into this rock here.
26:55I want to add more of a lift.
27:00Yeah, I'll go one on this side and one on that side.
27:04So we've got to get really creative.
27:07Needs a little extra pull.
27:12With his underlift still attached, John will run lines to trees on either side of his wrecker,
27:20routing them to the camper's rear axles to overcome the rocky bank.
27:29All righty.
27:30All righty.
27:31Let's see how this goes for us.
27:34Loading his lines.
27:40John puts his winches to work.
27:45Yeah, she's coming.
27:48How's that tree holding?
27:52She's putting quite a bit of weight on that.
27:56Yeah, I know.
27:57Shifting.
28:08Okay, moment of truth.
28:14We don't do it if it doesn't work for John Dodds.
28:21Good.
28:22Yeah, we're good.
28:23We're out.
28:27This one looks good.
28:32You fared pretty good, bud.
28:33To everyone's relief.
28:35As big as those boulders are that were underneath it.
28:40The damage is minimal.
28:43The story ended really well.
28:44I was actually getting really worried about it there for a second.
28:49Relaxing his grip, John offers a courtesy tow.
28:53Feels great.
28:55I took some creativity and a lot of teamwork from both our parts.
29:00To where the owner will live while he builds his new home.
29:07You're a good man, John.
29:09No problem, my friend.
29:10Good man.
29:11He came in with the expectation damage was going to get done.
29:14Saved my camper.
29:17And seeing that very little was done has definitely got him feeling good.
29:22Definitely not no rotator job, though.
29:28I feel good to be able to help.
29:35They went on the highway, what is it?
29:37Four and a half hours northeast.
29:40That's sick away.
29:41A Ben's towing 50 ton returns to the scene.
29:46Hey, Mike, are you on this channel?
29:49I'm on this channel, yeah.
29:51With Mike.
29:53That looks like I went pretty quick and easy.
29:56Back to help finish what he started.
30:00Sometimes jobs are quick.
30:02Some of these jobs like this can just turn into a marathon.
30:07Headed eastbound, when it lost traction, the semi-trailer caught an edge and broke free from its tractor.
30:19One for you, one for me.
30:22I think you can probably just go off the bumper there, that'll be enough.
30:25Do you want me high or low?
30:26Low.
30:27With Greenhorn Max hooking to the rear, Mike hooks the front.
30:35Perfect.
30:35Working inside a single lane.
30:38The shoulder on this particular stretch is measured in feet, and not very many of them.
30:44They must make use of every inch.
30:48Am I still inside the line?
30:50You're good.
30:52I'm going to get ahead of you here and then let you to your end.
30:55Max has been a very good student over his time here.
30:59Yeah, I got a puppy.
30:59This is going to be a bit of a challenge for him, but I know he's up to it.
31:04Alternating between Mike's 50 ton.
31:07Okay, we'll let you catch up.
31:08And Max's one ton.
31:10Well done.
31:16We're going to run out of line shortly.
31:21They bring the trailer up as far as they can.
31:25We'll stop there.
31:26In their cramped workspace.
31:28Okay, freewheel your line, and we'll wait for traffic control.
31:34But to get it fully out of the ditch...
31:38So we're taking the line, huh?
31:40They'll need to shut down a second lane.
31:44We're taking this lane only.
31:46So cut yourself hard over when you come ahead.
31:50Okay.
31:51Falling traffic.
31:52We're going to one lane.
31:54All yours.
31:55With a critical route down to a single alternating lane.
32:00That's good.
32:01Right there.
32:05Okay, go ahead.
32:06Start pulling.
32:06I'll keep up.
32:08Mike kicks it into high gear.
32:11Highway 1 is the main commercial corridor between BC Interior and the rest of Canada.
32:17Keep rolling.
32:18And obviously they want to have us cleared and gone as soon as possible.
32:21What's the hold up?
32:23One lane only.
32:31East of Revelstoke.
32:33Sorry, but surely.
32:36A tricky trailer recovery as the Trans-Canada Highway down to one lane.
32:43Keep going.
32:44Keep going.
32:47Mike and Max.
32:50Bring her right here under each.
32:53Heave ho.
32:54Good.
32:55Just hold it.
32:55I'm going to pull.
32:56To bring a toppled trailer back on pavement.
33:00The goal is to do this with minimal traffic instructions.
33:06Ah, it's going like it.
33:11There, she's touching down ya.
33:15That'll work.
33:16She's sitting flat.
33:17Okay, Max, you can set her down and get out of there.
33:21The traffic can go through.
33:24Max clears his record.
33:26Looks like we're moving.
33:28And the backlog on Highway 1 is released.
33:34Nice, guys.
33:36Now we load it up and get it out of here.
33:39But towing the trailer away is not an option.
33:43We're going to land off the trailer because it's on its side and there's no wheels left.
33:48And the tilting trailer...
33:52Don't break it.
33:55...needs a little help.
33:58See if the excavator will give it a little bit of a push.
34:01The excavator is a handy little piece of equipment.
34:04It's got the blade.
34:05It can push things.
34:06Ready?
34:07Yeah.
34:10Watch that front corner, Max.
34:13Let me know when it's up over the first axle.
34:20The extra muscle from Bill's excavator...
34:27...pushes the trailer all the way...
34:31...on deck.
34:33Good enough.
34:34Heads up.
34:36Coming over.
34:39Still plenty to learn, but yeah, I think we're in a pretty good place.
34:43And Team Reliable's Ben's towing...
34:46Oh, yeah.
34:48I'd call that a load.
34:50...takes the win.
34:52Okay, I'm out of here.
34:54The recovery plan went well.
34:55The highway's open and everybody's happy.
34:58They got it all cleaned up.
35:00Mike's built a very good team in Revelstoke.
35:02He managed it all and I'm very proud of him.
35:06That's amazing.
35:11500 kilometers southwest...
35:13Old gentlemen, Santa came early.
35:16...in the Fraser Valley...
35:18Merry Christmas.
35:21...aggressive towing...
35:22So if you want to use this table...
35:26...is decking the halls.
35:28Today we have our sixth annual tow truck toy run.
35:32Every year it gets a little bit bigger.
35:35Collecting toys for kids in need.
35:39Jason Davis's daughters...
35:41...Matea Davis and Jasmine Lewis...
35:44...are aiming to outdo their previous toy runs.
35:48This year we actually had the military reach out to us...
35:51...and they wanted to participate, so they are here today.
35:54Sometimes you don't know how they're going to top it...
35:55...but they come up with these ideas.
35:57It makes us strive to want to keep doing it...
35:59...and making it bigger and better every single year.
36:02This year, making a surprise first-time appearance...
36:07It could be Mrs. Claus.
36:09...incognito, Jamie Davis...
36:13You look funny too.
36:15...and his wife and business partner, Sherry.
36:19In past years I've been out of town or working or somewhere.
36:23I'm here this year, going to hang out there for the day...
36:26...and enjoy it.
36:31Howdy.
36:33Hi.
36:33See Merv, I wanted to be like you.
36:35You want to compare?
36:37The whole towing industry puts in a big effort to throw this on...
36:40...and just to watch how many people turn up...
36:43...and all the items we get for donation is incredible.
36:46I got more of a beard like him.
36:49It feels great and everybody's lovely.
36:52Lots of new faces and lots of old dudes.
36:56The thing is itchier than heck.
36:58You want to try it, Jason?
36:59No thanks.
36:59Try it off. Just a little bit. Come on.
37:01How are you? Good, good.
37:03I actually enjoy just talking to the guys that you know there.
37:06We don't really see each other as much as you would think...
37:08...because everybody's busy doing their thing.
37:10This is my main man right here.
37:13Every year I say this, but every year it's true.
37:15You think it'll fit you?
37:17Okay, around the ears, yeah?
37:19Yeah, you gotta be down a bit.
37:21I'm sorry.
37:22I'm so impressed with the ability to bring the industry together.
37:26There you go.
37:29Convoy's almost here!
37:32Finally, it's the main event.
37:35A Christmas convoy.
37:39Merry Christmas!
37:42Ha ha! Look at all the people!
37:45And a strangely familiar guest of honor.
37:49Welcome to the toy run!
37:59At aggressive towing...
38:02There we go!
38:06The sixth annual Christmas toy drive is underway.
38:12And with over 50 tow trucks from across BC...
38:16Wow, that's a lot of trucks.
38:18Yeah.
38:19It's their biggest...
38:22...and brightest to date.
38:24All of us in the industry, I think, take pride in that.
38:27It shows their dedication to helping people.
38:31There's the army, look at that!
38:34It's even caught the attention...
38:36All the kids!
38:38...of the big man himself.
38:40I feel like I need some hairspray.
38:44Jasmine, Tia, I've known those girls since...
38:48...like that.
38:49And...
38:51I'm very proud to see them take the initiative...
38:55...to organize this whole toy run.
38:59How are you today?
39:01You're so cute!
39:02All they got to do is walk up with a good, fresh chocolate chip cookie...
39:06...and they're in.
39:08After six years of toy runs...
39:11Being able to see the trailer fold up is definitely a rewarding feeling.
39:15Santa will be leaving with his heaviest haul yet.
39:19It helped shed a better light on the toying industry as a whole.
39:23It's kind of inspirational to see all these tow truck guys come together and help Santa out.
39:27What's your name?
39:28It's all for a good cause.
39:30For me to be able to go this year was a good thing.
39:35There you are.
39:37Merry Christmas!
39:42This is definitely no holiday yet.
39:44But 600 kilometers north...
39:47I don't want to be here for Christmas.
39:49I've got to be at home.
39:50...near Quesnel, D.C.
39:53A tough luck lumber hauler has Rob Barber and Kyle Langlois from Otto...
40:02This is new.
40:03...working the holidays.
40:05Tighten up.
40:08It's hard because someone's got to work Christmas Day, Christmas Eve.
40:14To the top!
40:16Every tow truck operator's wish at the end of a season is probably a little vacation time.
40:23Are you as happy as I am to see that come up?
40:26But we're the only ones that are out there to keep the traffic flowing.
40:30The super heavy super bees back on the road.
40:34I like that.
40:35With an improvised two-wrecker tow-up.
40:47But despite being on the clock...
40:50Does he look better like that? Or like this?
40:53The team back at the Otto Yard...
40:56Like that.
40:58...does their best to brighten holiday spirits.
41:01Is there any more lights in?
41:03Yeah, our days during the wintertime are short, so it's nice when you see the lights light up the yard.
41:12Good afternoon, Otto. Kim speaking.
41:15It's hard, right?
41:16It's a festive season. Everybody wants time off to do stuff.
41:19And you don't always get it.
41:27But the following morning...
41:29Beautiful sunny day!
41:32So what kind of tree are we going to look for today, girls?
41:35I want one that's soft.
41:38On a rare day off, Kyle's on a special mission with his family.
41:43You don't want a pokey one?
41:45No! They hurt!
41:46They're all going to be pokey.
41:48Yeah.
41:48Every Christmas time now, we go out and we get a real tree.
41:52Oh, wait. That one? That one? That one?
41:54That one's nice.
41:55That one's nice.
41:56Okay, let's go take a look.
42:00We found the tree!
42:02Think it'll fit?
42:03Yeah. Hopefully.
42:04I actually look forward to these and enjoy them because they don't happen a lot.
42:10More throttle!
42:11There you go!
42:13I want it!
42:15It doesn't really matter what the tree looks like.
42:18It's a family event.
42:19It grows memories for everybody coming out and doing this.
42:22Up and over!
42:24Today's haul...
42:26We got a tree!
42:28...is the kind of job every toman wants.
42:31Heading into the holidays.
42:33It's kind of nice to be able to stop.
42:36Ready, girls?
42:37Yep!
42:37And make the best of it for the short amount of time that I do get off.
42:42Can we get another Christmas tree?
42:44Go on to the basement.
42:45Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
42:47Ha, ha, ha, ha.
42:50Next time, on Highway Through Hell...
42:53Supposed to be three or four semi-trucks.
42:56...lumber mayhem...
42:57Damn.
42:59...causes carnage...
43:01...on the coke.
43:02Smells like chickens.
43:04...a farmer in the ditch...
43:07It's like a smorgasbord of wreck.
43:08...has aggressive on the line.
43:11Oh, oh, oh.
43:12...and Alexis shows Jamie...
43:15This is the biggest thing I've ever told.
43:17...how it's done.
43:18Quite the way it's done.
43:44Where is somebody who has considered the
43:47Adam 불ent in Italian.
