01:29always done everything for us around the house but since the injury she couldn't do anything in
01:35the house kept getting worse we just have a lot of stuff that we don't move and keeps building up

01:42building up everything's everywhere it's just a massive war zone it's not good I would love to
01:49clean the place up but Rita's very proud and she likes to do things her way I was the mum
01:56that did
01:56everything for her family so I worked six days a week but still got home in time to cook dinner

02:01then all of a sudden because of my accident everything stopped the clutter is an absolute nightmare we love
02:09having people over and I don't like having people over now it's embarrassing we've really hit a
02:15standstill and it's about time we got some help suffering a debilitating injury after being fiercely
02:30independent can be devastating and for Rita who still wants to do everything her way the mental block
02:36stopping her from accepting her family's help has left the household in complete disarray

06:03system working no no and the blinds don't match either no they don't oh yeah okay whose room is
06:16this is my room okay so separate rooms yes why separate rooms two reasons first of all was my
06:24injury and years he wakes up really early in the morning about quarter to four before work so it's
06:28easier for him to clomp around in here and not worry about waking me up but I noticed that it
06:35doesn't feel like an adult's room yeah it is my room now but it used to belong to my eldest

06:42the other thing I want to ask about is this shape on the wall that's a size six basketball I

06:48basketball players so help me out here are these all your clothes in here no that side that's still all
06:54his and how long ago did he move out cheese and there's still some of his clothes yes he lives

06:58of basket got it well that's going to change okay this room needs a complete overhaul you have a mood

07:37it doesn't really look like that it's a little bit constricted so how long has this sense of chaos
07:45pervaded your life 18 months since the injury what else has happened since then everything's happened
07:51since then mum passed as well what happened it's called anaplastic thyroid cancer no treatment no cure
08:03three to six months if you're lucky oh okay I'm gonna breathe through this
08:09she was tough she went on her terms yeah she didn't even sit in it for a minute she just
08:17went
08:17oh so they can't make me better I said no mama they can't she said oh okay then so she
08:24looked at
08:24the oncologist I'll have euthanasia thanks so it's called VAD voluntary assisted dying
08:34she made her decision
08:41yep from the moment she walked into the hospital she got seven days
08:45so has all this just been compounded by that it has I've still got some of mum's stuff
08:53yeah yeah yeah what kind of stuff some of her clothes where are they in the front room so
09:02all of this is really a reflection of the chaos of the last 18 months yeah
09:09you keep doing that you keep gasping for breath yeah and that's what it feels yeah it's how it feels
09:14like you're drowning yeah so what we need to do is we need to get through this clutter to get

09:22to the other side where you can breathe okay okay that's our goal let's do it do a deep breath

09:38going to regain order in the household everything is boxed up so decluttering can begin at a nearby
09:45warehouse and while Angie hunts for treasures amongst the mess Peter takes care of yes eggs jam-packed
09:56wardrobe so one of the great things about these wardrobe boxes is you can easily hang stuff in for
10:02moving and when you get them to the new location unload them straight away load it up as I pass

10:16I'm feeling anxious and apprehensive things have got to be done my way so watching people pack for
10:22you is really quite frightening you feel the anxiety that's going to be difficult for Rita to

10:58thousands of items are being removed from Rita yes egg arvor and Alina's house where clutter had taken
11:05over after mum Rita suffered a debilitating leg injury
11:12with the last van loaded up everything's taken to the space invaders warehouse where it's unpacked and sorted into categories
11:22so the family can decide what to keep donate or recycle
11:28there's a mammoth amount of stuff here that Rita has admitted is mostly hurt straight ahead since her leg injury
11:35left her with ongoing pain this once do-it-all mum has struggled to keep on top of things while
11:41still resisting help from her family and losing her own mum to cancer in the last 12 months has only
11:47added to the chaotic clutter that Rita now has to deal with when I came to
11:52in your house there was a ton of clutter on the count of three I want you to open your
11:56eyes and have a look at what that looks like when all of the clutter is set up in one

14:28so rather than cover them up with new flooring
14:30I can save the cash to upgrade the ducted heating
14:33that's no longer working
14:36ripping out the old narrow ducts
14:38an ageing gas burner from the roof space
14:40is a big job
14:43but installing a modern electric system
14:45will save the family heaps on their winter energy bills
14:48and adding aircon will keep the place cool in summer
15:01next the team are tackling a problem of seismic proportions in the front room
15:06while Rita had closed up one side of the room with a DIY wall
15:10the open entry means kids movie nights
15:13would send loud noise throughout the rest of the house
15:17so we're adding a new wall and door to the hallway
15:20to reduce noise and give the young adults some privacy
15:23plus improving the room layout
15:25by creating a built-in unit for a new large screen TV
15:28at one end
15:29and a new seating area for playing board games at the other
