00:00What would you say if I told you the wildly popular weight loss drugs Ozempic and Wagovi
00:04may soon cost less than 20 bucks? If you are at all familiar with how much these bad boys
00:09normally go for, you'd probably call me a liar. Alas, it's true, or soon to be. Generic versions
00:14of these GLP-1 drugs are about to get a whole heck of a lot cheaper in some corners of
00:19the globe.
00:20Why the drastic drop in price? It's because the patent on the drugs, which is owned by Danish
00:25pharma company Novo Nordisk, is expiring. An exciting prospect if you're someone who's
00:30been shelling out hundreds of dollars a month to buy them. However, you might want to hold off
00:34digging out those skinny jeans from the back of the closet just for now. Patent expiration dates
00:39depend on what country you're in, and the GLP-1 patent will expire in most major markets within
00:44the next few months. But in India, that clock runs out today. Indian drug makers haven't revealed the
00:50exact prices for the off-brand versions, but they could be slashed by as much as 50 to 60 percent
00:55and roll out as soon as this weekend. After India, China, Brazil, Turkey, and South Africa are next.
01:01So you're wondering, when will we here in the U.S. be able to snatch up a month's supply of
01:06semaglutide for roughly the cost of two venti lattes? A while. The patent doesn't expire here
01:11in the States until 2032. Womp womp. Europe is sooner, but not by much. 2031.
