The Dijon five: Ancient skeletons found sitting upright in French school playground

French archaeologists have discovered five new Gallic 'seated' burials at an excavation site in Dijon town centre. While barely 75 skeletons in this position have been found anywhere in the world, the latest discovery brings to 20 the number found in the city famed for its mustard.

00:00French archaeologists have discovered five new Gallic-seeded burials at an excavation site in Dijon Town Center.
00:08While barely 75 skeletons in this position have been found anywhere in the world,
00:13the latest discovery brings to 20 the number found in the city famed for its mustard.
00:19All contained men seated facing west and devoid of any personal belongings,
00:25except for a black stone armband that helped date their deaths.
00:30Eighteen such graves were found near or beneath the asphalt of the playground at the Josephine Baker Elementary School in
00:38Dijon.
00:39Over the past 30 years, the city of Dijon has become accustomed to finding traces of the Gaulish people in
00:46its upsoil.
00:47It remains to be seen what the significance of this type of burial might be,
00:52sacrifice or honor, the killing of enemies.
00:55For now, archaeologists are not favoring any particular theory.
