00:00Marking a historic moment for India's cheetah reintroduction project, one of the translocated Namibian cheetahs, Siyaya, gave birth to four
00:09cubs in the Kuno National Park in India.
00:12It was the culmination of a 13-year effort to restore a species.
00:16Indian Express reports these are the first cheetah cubs born in India in over 70 years, as cheetahs had gone
00:23extinct in the country in 1952.
00:26The birth of the cubs followed the death of one of the eight Namibian cheetahs released in the National Park
00:31back in September 2022.
00:34Unfortunately, the cheetah named Sasha passed from a kidney infection she had contracted while in captivity in Namibia.
00:41The high-profile project is the first time wild cheetahs have been moved across continents to be released.
00:47The nature of it has put in question the efforts made by countries to deal with their struggling wildlife.
00:53As 12 more cheetahs were brought to India in February 2023, biologists worry cheetahs won't have enough space to roam
01:01without being killed by predators or people,
01:04considering India's 1.4 billion human population struggling for land.
