01:24home me my mom are like best friends she's always caring and she's always done everything for us
01:31around the house but since the injury and she couldn't do anything the house kept getting worse
01:38we just have a lot of stuff that we don't move and keeps building up and building up everything's
01:44everywhere it's just a massive war zone it's not good I would love to clean the place up but Rita's
01:50very proud and she likes to do things her way I was a mum that did everything for her family
01:57so I worked
01:58six days a week but still got home in time to cook dinner and then all of a sudden because
02:02of my
02:02accident everything stopped the clutter is an absolute nightmare we love having people over and
02:11I don't like having people over now it's embarrassing we've really hit a standstill and it's about time we got
02:17some help suffering a debilitating injury after being fiercely independent can be devastating and for
02:32Rita who still wants to do everything her way the mental block stopping her from accepting her
02:38family's help has left the household in complete disarray

03:38I stepped in a hole and my leg went one way my foot went the other way had two surgeries

03:48bound for about four weeks and non-weight bearing for about four and a half months oh wow who looked
03:55after you that would be me my uncle really yeah took time off work took time off uni impressive
04:05look after mom that's fantastic wow so family's obviously a big thing huge we were all doing
04:13everything for her but then there was times I'd walk in and mom was just in tears because she was
04:18like she felt like she was a burden on everyone because she couldn't do anything we'd have to like
04:23reassure her that like none of us ever thought that she was a burden how do you get around now
04:30sometimes the cane okay and sometimes I needed it just depends on the day and how sore the leg is
04:35and
04:36on a scale of one to ten how much pain are you in usually oh we're sitting at about six

04:41okay that's still pretty serious yeah yeah okay yeah sheree what are you thinking I'm definitely
04:45noticing some building materials and I'm noticing a half-finished wall that was a room that you just
04:50wanted to block off yeah so that we could have it as a separate space all right and it's just

04:54been finished I like doing DIY that's just part of a project that my legs going yeah not yet okay

05:55challenges here the carpet looks like it hasn't been replaced for ages the ceiling vents look quite
06:01prehistoric is the heating system working no no and the blinds don't match either no they don't yeah
06:14okay whose room is this is my room okay so separate rooms yes why separate rooms two reasons first of
06:23fall was my injury and yes he wakes up really early in the morning about quarter to four before work

06:28it's easier for him to clomp around in here and not worry about waking me up but I noticed that

06:35doesn't feel like an adult's room yeah it is my room now but it used to belong to my eldest

07:40little bit constricted so how long has this sense of chaos pervaded your life 18 months since injury
07:47what else has happened since then everything's happened since then mum passed as well what
07:56happened it's called anaplastic thyroid cancer no treatment no cure three to six months if you're
08:04lucky doll oh okay I'm gonna breathe through this she was tough she went on her terms yeah she didn't
08:15even sit in it for a minute she just went oh so they can't make me better I said no
08:21mama they can't
08:22not she said oh okay then so she looked at the oncologist oh I have euthanasia thanks so it's called
08:30VAD voluntary assisted dying she made her decision
08:41yep from the moment she walked into the hospital she got seven days
08:45yes so has all this just been compounded by that it has I've still got some of mum's stuff
08:53here yeah yeah what kind of stuff some of her clothes where are they in the front room so all

09:02this is really a reflection of the chaos of the last 18 months yeah you keep doing that you keep

09:11in for breath yeah and that's what it feels yeah it's how it feels like you're drowning yeah so what
09:17we need to do is we need to get through this clutter to get you to the other side mm

09:30pack up I am okay let's do that guys let's bring in the boxes let's get going to regain order

09:41household everything is boxed up so decluttering can begin at a nearby warehouse and while Angie hunts
09:51ask for treasures amongst the mess Peter takes care of your eggs jam-packed wardrobe
09:57so one of the great things about these wardrobe boxes is you can easily hang stuff in for moving and

10:03you get them to the new location unload them straight away load it up as I pass them to you

10:16I'm feeling anxious and apprehensive things have got to be done my way so watching people pack for
10:21you is really quite frightening you feel the anxiety that's going to be difficult for Rita to
10:28let go of things but I think she needs this
10:34coming up Sheree kick-starts the reno
10:41the family is stunned by their enormous clutter what's the story and Peter hits a nerve oh that
10:48just made me emotional
10:57thousands of items are being removed from Rita yes egg arvor and Alina's house where clutter had
11:04taken over after mum Rita suffered a debilitating leg injury with the last man loaded up everything's
11:16taken to the space invaders warehouse where it's unpacked and sorted into categories so the family
11:23can decide what to keep donate or recycle there's a mammoth amount of stuff here that Rita has admitted
11:31is mostly hers straight ahead since her leg injury left her with ongoing pain this once do-it-all mum
11:38has struggled to keep on top of things while still resisting help from her family and losing her own
11:45mum to cancer in the last 12 months has only added to the chaotic clutter that Rita now has to
11:50deal
11:51with when I came to your house there was a ton of clutter on the count of three I want
11:55you to open
11:56your eyes and have a look at what that looks like when all of the clutter is set up in
12:01one place one
12:02two three open your eyes oh my we have almost a thousand books DVDs and CDs that's crazy this is
12:29unreal linen covers all of these tables here
12:32that's nuts yes here are your clothes Daniel's clothes as well all of this furniture came out of those three
12:41rooms and perhaps most impressively
12:45Rita shoes folded clothes and hanging clothes there are more than 70 purses and bags on these two tables
12:57that's what's up all of this took 125 moving boxes to get here to the hall
13:09so I calculate at least 70 percent of what you see here needs to go wow that's a lot yeah
13:17give me two words
13:19for how you want to feel when you walk into the front room or your bedrooms comfortable and happy good
13:26relax a edition okay relaxed and chilled chill that's great yes enjoy for what it's meant to be okay good

13:48while the clutter has to go the house also needs a big revamp with the demolition phase getting underway
13:58sheree has just two days in a small budget to turn the once jam-packed front room into an
14:04entertainer's dream for arvor and elena make over their brother tunyal's old bedroom into a relaxing haven
14:12for yes egg and transform reader's cramped bedroom into a calming oasis to aid her recovery after pulling
14:22up the decades old carpet i'm stoked to discover the original boards underneath are in great condition
14:28so rather than cover them up with new flooring i can save the cash to upgrade the ducted heating that's
14:33no
14:33longer working ripping out the old narrow ducts an aging gas burner from the roof space is a big job
14:42but installing a modern electric system will save the family heaps on their winter energy bills
14:47and adding aircon will keep the place cool in summer
15:01next the team are tackling a problem of seismic proportions in the front room
15:06while reader had closed out one side of the room with a diy wall the open entry means kids movie
15:12nights
15:12would send loud noise throughout the rest of the house so we're adding a new wall and door to the
15:19hallway to reduce noise and give the young adults some privacy plus improving the room layout by creating
15:26a built-in unit for a new large screen tv at one end and a new seating area for playing
15:31board games at the
15:35other so reader these tables are your clothes shoes belts and bags plus three hanging racks if you had to
15:43guess what percentage of these do you actually wear i'll say 20 but it might be closer to 10. okay

15:49should only have three kinds of clothes in your closet clothes that fit you now clothes that when you
15:55wear them you feel great in them and clothes that when you wear them people say well you look really
15:59well put together there's not many of those okay well then if they don't fit those categories they
16:04shouldn't be in your closet correct because when you open your closet it should welcome you your room
16:10felt like chaos yeah okay so here's what we're going to do elena help your mum yeah stay or go

16:15go go okay good skins keep keep keep keep turn it okay keep from the outset rita's keeping a lot

16:29it keep oh wait keep despite admitting most of these clothes don't suit who she is now and that she
16:38may
16:38never fully recover from her injury so i'm pulling out an item that i hope will resonate more strongly
16:47this was hanging in your closet yes what's the story um that was my deb dress last year lots of
16:55really good memories with that dress best memory for you of that night watching her because i was in a
17:00wheelchair at the time okay so i couldn't get up and dance but my whole family did and watching them
17:06was fun but it did kill me that i couldn't get up and have a dance with her okay oh
17:10what that just
17:12made me emotional because i love dancing i haven't had i haven't danced for almost 18 months yeah
17:22and that night was special it was so fun take care of this okay it's important yeah okay let's move

17:29it's clear that rita misses being the active outgoing person she once was be tough oh yeah i am donate
17:37donate good and while that's making it difficult for her to let old clothes go yay or nay nay
17:45it's great that elina is pushing her mum in the right direction oh heels are out of the question heels

17:51gone so when we started tables covered now we have seven boxes off to donation these are all the
18:00folded clothes you're keeping one hanging rack and the deb dress how do you actually feel lighter there
18:07you go we've got lots more to do let's move on good job coming up wow angie uncovers the story
18:15behind a
18:15powerful image and a missing family member oh that really broke me you have to let go of that and
18:22reta's confronted with a major home truth this is tough i know
18:31at the renovation the new heating and cooling system is being installed in the roof space
18:37with extensive duct work connecting enlarged vents for better airflow throughout the house
18:43while sheree is dealing with an issue in yes egg's bedroom this used to be an old kids room and
18:49they
18:49were playing basketball in the room hence all the holes throughout the room yep we'll patch that all
18:55up for you all right great thank you perfect fixing this room's damaged plaster isn't hard but we've
19:02already got our hands full dealing with old air vents and light fittings we're having to relocate
19:09by filling in several ceiling holes across the house so to make sure we don't fall behind schedule
19:16we're going to have to use heat guns to try and dry all the joint compound in time for painting
19:23sheree also has to tackle rita's bland bedroom this room doesn't really suit rita's lively personality
19:30so to give it more character and sophistication i'm putting up scallop wall panels
19:36looks good huh yeah it does look good it's bendy too so you can put it on straight walls or
19:40you can
19:41bend it around curves and get really creative with it
19:52as new lights are installed to brighten up the gray feature wall sheree heads out to order a special
19:59surprise for rita i have a homeowner who has a medical injury she spends quite a lot of time
20:05in bed yeah so is this adjustable at all it is would you like me to show you yes please

20:11of a button you will see that the head will start raising and so will the foot that's really great
20:22upstairs at the warehouse angie's hoping to learn more about the treasures she found in rita's cluttered
20:28you're looking at my daddy's backgammon board how old we talking oh at least 30 before dad passed away
20:37when i was pregnant with tanya we lived at mum and dad's and that was a really hot summer yeah
20:43dad work shift work so when he'd wake up we'd sit outside on the patio and dad would get me
20:48bucket of
20:48cold water for the feet because pregnant feet get really big so i'd sit there with swollen feet in a
20:54bucket of water paid back cabin all afternoon oh that's the perfect summer game and what a good
21:00memory to have oh yeah with your dad i love that this was his i do feel like it's definitely

21:27so we had a second born no one and at the time there was an add-on tv with a

21:35tv and ava goes mama look it's noah because he had this mane of hair i had some photos here

21:44this is noah okay he was diagnosed with a condition called hydrant encephaly and not a long life
21:51expectancy and we had him for 18 months so we had an angel and then we'll study for a little
21:59while and
22:00he went back to his makeup i love the way that you've said that that's such a beautiful way to
22:06look at it how did the kids handle that my eldest son tanyol didn't cope well no of course so
22:14tanyol
22:14was four and a half when noel passed away it's old enough to understand oh yeah bring him back yeah
22:22they can't take my brother away mama bring him back oh i said bubba they can't bring him back he
22:27said
22:28but this is where he lives mum you can't take him away oh that broke me that really broke me
22:34that is a
22:35lot to go through that was tough yeah so we've established that noah is your lion what about the
22:44other children what are they the boys my tigers just because they're so protective yes of course makes
22:50sense yeah and she's pussycat i didn't even realize that they all could be it's a feline thing yeah
22:59what a beautiful analogy the love between this family is obvious and while the lion picture should
23:06take pride of place in the new front room of their home i'm going to create something truly special
23:12that'll bring the other cats together as well rita i've been really giving a huge amount of thought
23:19to you the clutter your injury and your loss peter and yezeg are now helping rita deal with her medical
23:29aids and her late mum's old clothes are each of these a different stage of you getting better yes
23:36okay so can you now let any of these go i have to keep the walker okay the walker stays
23:42the boot the
23:43boot stays and that okay so the crutches will go go don't need those so i want to show you

24:03mum's clothing that you couldn't even bear to look at yep this is tough i know just stay with me

24:23however what you're focused on very much is the physical stuff there's something else going
24:33on here for you there's a whole lot of mental stuff physical and mental clutter is caused largely
24:40by two things injury and loss guess who's taken a huge whammy me in the last 18 months in both
24:51me and you lost part of yourself in all of this
24:59tell me what you lost yeah that mobility and strength sense of purpose
25:06what are you most worried about at the moment recovery getting back to pre-injury
25:22i don't like you
25:25you have to accept the fact that part of the clutter that you're dealing with may be
25:32that you're expecting to be way back where you were 18 months ago absolutely
25:38you have to let go of that okay do you love this woman absolutely unconditionally absolutely do you
25:49love her any differently with her being in this state than you did 18 months ago before the injury
25:55love doesn't change no so what i don't want you to do is to put all of this mental clutter
26:01on you and just
26:03accept who you are now you are enough
26:09say it i am enough i am enough and i'm not saying you shouldn't try to be completely rehabilitated no
26:18absolutely not but i'm saying don't set yourself an impossible standard because if you do
26:26that's clutter yeah clutter is anything that gets between you and the life you want to live
26:34it's okay now i want to come back to this okay if your mother was standing here what would she
26:41say to you right now get rid of it donate it are there garments here that bring back a strong
26:48memory
26:48of her no i know mum would say just donate okay so these will go off to donation great job

26:58got lots more to do excellent coming up doesn't fit the reno hits a snag top fits bottom doesn't as
27:07reta unleashes a surprise on the whole family do you know who this woman is not not who replaced our
27:18at reta and yes eggs house pressures mounting to get everything done in time and although it's
27:25unfortunate the ceiling hole repairs in the front room have finally dried enough to paint there's a
27:31new problem installing cabinets into the wall alcove doesn't fit doesn't fit top fits bottom doesn't
27:38is that because the walls bowed yes unfortunately i really need a fast practical solution as there was
27:45hardly any storage in this room and i want to fix that so avor and alina can keep it neat
27:50and tidy
27:53so we're cutting into the bowed section of the wall
27:57to prise off enough space to squeeze the cabinets into the recess and then we'll be able to patch and
28:04paint over the visible damage and to add some color that'll make this young adult retreat a place to
28:10relax and chill i've chosen to paint the walls a calming green and the cabinetry a tranquil blue
28:18i also want to add a modern rug that'll complement the polished wood floor's warm tones and help define
28:24the movie watching zone for when avor and alina have friends over that's nice all right
28:38back at the warehouse angie's working on her treasure projects for rita and the family
28:45this vintage backgammon set holds beautiful memories for rita of playing with her dad
28:50but it's in desperate need of restoration so i'm sanding it back then adding new timber veneer strips
29:00of light silver ash and dark walnut i'm super careful to cut precisely so the checkerboard is
29:07perfectly uniform then i apply glue so it'll stick to the box and once set i'll give it a coat
29:14of
29:14furniture oil so it'll look as good as new and next i want to create a tribute to rita and
29:21yezeg's
29:21child noah who passed way too soon and represent all of the kids in the front of their home
29:28so i'm taking inspiration from noah's striking lion image to make a unique set of decoupage tea lights
29:35i cover a glass vase with glue to add texture with pressed leaves
29:41some thin brown paper to give the candlelight a soft warm glow and a feline for each of the family's
29:48little cups
29:53so all of this is the linen that came out of your home which is kind of amazing
29:58yeah it's insane it's actually insane
30:01as the do-it-all mum rita looked after this massive amount of linen on her own
30:06but now her injury has made that difficult i want to see if she can embrace who she is now
30:12and accept help do you want to keep these these are yours oh no that one can go okay good

30:52everything without help now gone keep these are heaps all of these you sure yeah but this is a huge
30:59breakthrough the horrible chuck chuck chuck chuck chuck these ones good so ugly okay good great job
31:08when we started one two three tables polled high with bedding and linen we're now down to just one
31:14table plus plus a couple of duvets and five huge boxes off to donation what are you thinking i love

31:21that was so good what shifted for you what's changed it's time to move forward do you know who
31:29this woman is who replaced our mom what's going on do you think i don't know but i think she's
31:37completely changed elena how do you see your mum's shifted i think seeing mum be like so
31:43in control of everything over the last couple of years and seeing other people just like help her
31:49instead of her having to help everyone else and knowing that she's actually allowing it to happen
31:54it's very new but it's really nice to see it happen it's good to have change isn't it yeah and
32:00it's the
32:01year of change i know it's been 18 months two years of horror yeah and pain and loss but it
32:07really does
32:07feel like yes the tides turn absolutely okay you've done a great job i'll get the guys to send all

32:14off to donation we'll make sure this goes back in the house and then we'll be back into it get

32:25oh my god disaster strikes for sheree we're out at the 11th hour too
32:35at reader and yezeg's house the rubbish truck arrives to clear the front yard
32:41while inside also needs a big clean
32:47when you're renovating dust and debris gets into every nook and cranny but as our cleaners are also
32:53trained support workers i'm going to organize extra help around the house for rita while she recovers
32:59from her leg injury as the painters race to finish new blinds get installed and wallpaper is put up
33:15while the ducted heating and cooling is ready to go wow so we've got seven zones you've got kitchen
33:21family reader's room over's room yezeg's room and all they do is if they want heating or cooling in that
33:27room they just press that one button on or off correct oh that's so cool outside last minute
33:33deliveries arrive with new furniture to be rapidly assembled and put into place
33:41but it's the family's decision to keep their existing sofa which has just returned from the
33:47warehouse that's causing a major headache watch out now five minutes ago can we get in this way
33:55by closing up the entry to the front room with a new wall and door to give the young adults
33:59the
34:00privacy their vast fall we've now created an obstacle to getting this extra large sofa
34:05back into the room can you get in this way no it's not going to fit there oh my god
34:13this is really bad the reveal's only hours away and having no sofa to sit on in front of the
34:20tv
34:20would be an absolute disaster right at the 11th hour too
34:29meanwhile rita and her family are working together to reduce the rest of the clutter
34:35from cds and dvds to books go and kitchenware oh ruthless eldest son tunyal has come for his things
34:48comfy yep and to join in with the others helping rita cull her massive bag collection donate donate

37:35windows in this place just don't open enough to get this enormous sofa through be careful it's
37:40got really thin glass makes me a bit nervous so removing a pane of glass is our only option

37:52and while we've cleared the first hurdle all right will it fit i'm not sure it's now time
37:59for the moment of truth careful

38:36i'm so relieved to be on the home stretch and the last step is to make sure the styling is

40:50new venetians you've got brand new curtains we've upgraded all the lighting as well but the big ticket
40:57item here is that you now have brand new heating and cooling in every single room

44:44it's gonna be easier for you to get out of bed it ticks a lot of boxes for you but
