00:17:47Everyone is amazing
00:17:49Sometimes before you can watch someone fly
00:17:52You have to let them hit rock bottom
00:18:01Hello everybody
00:18:02My name is Braden Rumfelt
00:18:04I'm 22 years old
00:18:05And I'm from Murphy, North Carolina
00:18:09I was standing by my window on a cold and cloudy day
00:18:17When I was a baby, my dad would sit musical instruments at the bottom of our cribs
00:18:24And he felt like, you know, that was going to give us like these abilities
00:18:27Right
00:18:27Which it might have, who knows
00:18:29Will the circle be unbroken?
00:18:34Growing up in a family where it's cool to sing
00:18:37You know, that's got me to this point
00:18:39If it weren't for them, I wouldn't be here, much less going to Hawaii
00:18:44For you to get here is, it's powerful
00:18:48You let your light shine
00:18:51Before the world
00:18:53In the sky, Lord, in the sky
00:19:05Some people live for the fortune
00:19:10Some people live just for the fame
00:19:15Some people think that the fears are cool things
00:19:23Define what's within
00:19:28And I've been there before
00:19:32And that life's so poor, so full of the superficial
00:19:39And some people want it all
00:19:44But I don't want nothing at all
00:19:47If it ain't you, baby
00:19:50If I ain't got you, baby
00:19:53Some people want time to reach
00:19:56Some just want everything
00:19:59But everything means nothing
00:20:02If I ain't got you, yeah
00:20:13Sing it
00:20:15Sing it
00:20:15If I ain't got you, you
00:20:18Some people want it all
00:20:21But I don't want nothing at all
00:20:24If it ain't you, baby
00:20:28If I ain't got you, baby
00:20:31Some people want time to reach
00:20:34Some people want time to reach
00:20:35A love, just want everything
00:20:37I don't want anything
00:20:37But everything means nothing
00:20:40If I ain't got you
00:20:46I ain't got you
00:20:47All right, all right, all right
00:20:53Hi Maddie
00:20:54Hi, Maddie.
00:21:01Kid's singing.
00:21:02I feel like I just had the biggest smile on my face the whole time.
00:21:07Your voice is just velvety and big.
00:21:11You've got a lot of power in there and in all the right places.
00:21:15It's good to see you all again.
00:21:19Love you, boys.
00:21:21You know what?
00:21:21I feel like seeing his family and the connection, that's exactly what I wanted to see was that.
00:21:27I thought he had really great control and power to his voice, but he hit a couple of rough notes.
00:21:34Here we go.
00:21:36Performing in front of the editor of Rolling Stone.
00:21:39Jeez Louise.
00:21:40There's so many other eyes on us who get a say in our future.
00:21:44It's a little frightening.
00:21:46Oh, come on, man.
00:21:47I'm good.
00:21:49I'm Hannah Harper from Southeast Missouri, and I'm going to sing a country classic that
00:21:53my grandpa used to sing to honor his musical legacy.
00:21:56I'm really excited about the Ohana Round to have the chance to honor my grandpa.
00:22:00He was a patriarch.
00:22:02So many branches of talented people that came from him.
00:22:05He played music until the day he died.
00:22:07Good music that we can all relate to as a family, and we all play together at it, and everybody
00:22:13likes it.
00:22:14Bluegrass and gospel, that's what keeps us together.
00:22:17The legacy that he left was such a strong impression on my life.
00:22:21I want to do the same for my kids.
00:22:24I wish my grandpa was here to hear it.
00:22:25My grandma's going to be here, and she's going to be so thrilled because it was his favorite
00:22:29song.
00:22:29I know your life on earth was troubled, and only you could know the pain.
00:22:46You weren't afraid to face the devil.
00:22:55You were no stranger to the rain.
00:23:03Go rest high on that mountain.
00:23:13Son, your work on earth is done.
00:23:22Come to heaven a-shoutin'
00:23:29Love for the Father and the Son.
00:23:38Yeah.
00:23:39Go rest high on that mountain.
00:23:46I love her tones this morning.
00:23:48Son, your work on earth is done.
00:23:55Go to heaven a-shoutin'
00:24:04Love for the Father and the Son.
00:24:17Yeah.
00:24:18Woo!
00:24:20Woo!
00:24:22Woo!
00:24:22Woo!
00:24:24Woo!
00:24:27Gosh, there are so many parallels with your voice and Dolly, and just, it's just so beautifully
00:24:35country.
00:24:36But just remember that key that you got to at the end and really live in that space because
00:24:40your voice really opened up there.
00:24:42You've got the goods, and that was, uh, your voice is so beautiful to me.
00:24:46Appreciate it.
00:24:48You got that straight, authentic mountain voice, boy.
00:24:53You can definitely see that she was missing something because she usually plays the guitar.
00:24:57Yeah.
00:24:58But I don't know.
00:24:59I think she really delivered it and she felt like she was herself.
00:25:02I mean, obviously everybody can sing because they're here, but there's going to only be
00:25:07a handful that can make it to that star quality, you know?
00:25:10Say that again.
00:25:11What did you, what did you just, no, what did you just say?
00:25:13It was important.
00:25:14I said, would you go for the best singer or would you go for someone who you know would
00:25:19sell tickets, has a look, and has a voice?
00:25:22These are the questions we have to ask ourselves.
00:25:31Hi, guys.
00:25:33Um, my name is Genevieve Hayward.
00:25:35Today I will be singing your song by Elton John.
00:25:38Um, I picked this song today because the last time that my father was in Hawaii, he was on
00:25:43leave from Vietnam.
00:25:45Give it up for my dad.
00:25:46Wow.
00:25:46Thank you for your service, Dan.
00:25:49If I could give you the world, I would.
00:25:52But for right now, I'm just going to start with a song.
00:25:55Aw.
00:25:59It's a little bit funny, this feeling inside.
00:26:06I'm not one of those who can easily hide.
00:26:14I don't have much money, but boy, if I did, I'd buy a big house where we both could
00:26:27live.
00:26:31If I was a sculptor, but then again, no, or a man who makes potions in a traveling shot.
00:26:46I love that choice.
00:26:48Wow.
00:26:49That was so unexpected.
00:26:50How's that I can do?
00:26:53My gift is my song and this one's for you.
00:27:00Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
00:27:03And you can tell everybody that this is your song.
00:27:10It may be quite so good, but now that it's done,
00:27:16I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind
00:27:21That I put down in my heart
00:27:27Sing it!
00:27:29Wow, wow, wow
00:27:30A wonderful life is while you're in the world
00:27:45What a voice!
00:27:47Identity is hard when you sing such an iconic song like Elton's
00:27:51But for you to hang on and keep in control of that is amazing
00:27:56Way to come out here and box, alright?
00:28:01Thank you guys
00:28:07I loved her, listen, I always go for the rocker girls
00:28:10And she nailed it
00:28:12I really liked her energy, I loved her grit
00:28:16I honestly am not an emotional person
00:28:18But I thought about my mom and dad
00:28:20And how they've literally been there for me since day one
00:28:24Well, it's okay
00:28:28Those parents are having to be extra parental today
00:28:30Oh my god
00:28:33Hi everyone, my name is Abayami Lewis
00:28:35And I will be singing Rise Up by Andra Day
00:28:38I'm doing this song for my mother
00:28:40She is a single parent and life is not easy being a single parent
00:28:44She has taught me to rise up against all things that I'm dealing with
00:28:49And it inspires me
00:28:51I know I can rise up
00:28:53We will rise
00:28:55We will rise
00:28:57We will rise
00:28:59We will rise

00:29:23Yeah
00:29:26For you
00:29:30For you
00:29:33Come on, girl.
00:29:34For you
00:29:36For you
00:29:44We'll ride
00:29:53Thank you
00:30:00She's freaking 16 and she's like a Disney star, you know what I mean?
00:30:05Yeah
00:30:05And for singer to have like that big belt and a beautiful head voice like that is so rare
00:30:11If the tide takes California
00:30:16I'm so glad I got to hold ya
00:30:20My family has always been by my side throughout my entire music journey
00:30:24So it's really exciting to do this Ohana rap
00:30:28Forever falls apart
00:30:33Till forever falls apart
00:30:37My parents have always sacrificed so much time and everything for this
00:30:41And it means so much to me that they're here right now and doing all this
00:30:44It really means a lot
00:30:45If the tide takes California
00:30:50I'm so glad I got to know ya
00:30:54And if the sky falls from heaven above
00:30:59Oh, I know I'll have the best time falling into love
00:31:09And for a while
00:31:11You were all mine
00:31:14I spent a lifetime giving you my heart
00:31:18I swear that I'll be yours forever
00:31:20I'll be yours forever
00:31:23I'll be yours forever
00:31:25I'll be yours forever
00:31:29I'll be yours forever
00:31:30Till forever falls apart
00:31:36How was it?
00:31:39Thank you so much
00:31:42Breath of fresh air
00:31:47How many are we getting rid of tonight?
00:31:49So there's 30
00:31:50And we have to get down to 20
00:31:52Oh, 10
00:31:53Oh God
00:31:53Yeah
00:31:56I'm worried
00:31:57There's a lot of talented people that are in this group
00:32:00Let's please give it up for Brian Thomas
00:32:06I can't point a finger at anyone I don't think is going to make it to the top 20
00:32:10Which makes it so scary
00:32:11This next song goes out to all the people that we've had to leave behind
00:32:15In order to pursue our dreams
00:32:17For this round I'll be singing Landslide by Fleetwood Mac
00:32:20This song is kind of about change
00:32:23I just recently moved to South Florida in the pursuit of love
00:32:27I hardly see anyone now
00:32:28I kind of lost my family
00:32:31It's just one of those seasons of life
00:32:34Hey bud
00:32:34You know I'm super proud of you
00:32:37Thank you
00:32:37I know how you've been dreaming about this your whole life
00:32:41Having you here
00:32:42And I just get to spend the time
00:32:50I miss you
00:32:52I miss you
00:32:53I miss you
00:32:54I miss being home
00:32:55I love you with all my heart
00:32:57Thank you
00:32:58Thank you
00:33:07Well I've been afraid of changing
00:33:13Cause I've built my life around you
00:33:19Wait, I'm praying for you, Jay.
00:33:50And if you see my reflection in the snow-colored hair, maybe the Lancelot will bring it down.
00:34:12Oh, the Lancelot brought me down.
00:34:25Thank you, guys.
00:34:27Wow.
00:34:28Wow.
00:34:30Thank you, Brian.
00:34:31Brian, well, before you sing, I know talking to your family and telling them how much you love them is
00:34:38emotional.
00:34:38We still got to remember, I got a song to deliver, and I got to make sure I'm knocking this
00:34:44thing out start to finish.
00:34:45Now, you're one of my favorite voices, but it got a little screamy a little bit.
00:34:50So just curb down some of that over-raspy, gravelly stuff.
00:34:55Thank you so much.
00:34:58I was trying my hardest to get through this song, and that just wasn't what the judges were looking for
00:35:02this round.
00:35:03He was trying real hard.
00:35:04Yeah.
00:35:05He doesn't need to.
00:35:05He did a really good job.
00:35:08He said crap.
00:35:08I'm glad my dad got to see it, because it might have been my last performance of the idol, so...
00:35:18Welcome back to Idol's Ohana Round, where Ray is hoping to make it to America's Vote.
00:35:23I was looking in the camera and I was like, this is so giving Love Island confessional.
00:35:27Here it is.
00:35:29Hi, everyone.
00:35:31My name is Ray.
00:35:32I'm going to be singing I'll Be There by the Jackson Five.
00:35:35Yes.
00:35:36I wanted to dedicate this song to my sister, my heart, my soul, everything.
00:35:41My sister Jamie is one of the most important people in my life.
00:35:45She's the only person that really understands me and what I'm going through.
00:35:51I just love you so much, and this is for you.
00:35:53I promise to you that I'll always be there for you.
00:35:56So sweet.
00:35:57A sister's love.
00:35:59Ain't nothing like a sister's love now.
00:36:01You and I must make a pact.
00:36:06We must bring salvation back.
00:36:13Okay.
00:36:14Where there is love, I'll be there.
00:36:23Oh my God.
00:36:26I'll be there to comfort you.
00:36:27I'll reach out my hand to you.
00:36:30Go on, girl.
00:36:32I'll have faith in all you too.
00:36:37You better sing the song, then.
00:36:39Where there is love, I'll be there.
00:36:50I'll be there to comfort you.
00:36:54There's my world of dreams around you
00:36:57I'm so glad I found you, baby
00:37:01What is going on?
00:37:02I'll be there with the love so strong
00:37:06I'll be a serene
00:37:08You know I keep falling on
00:37:14I'll be there
00:37:17There you go, there you go
00:37:20I'll be there
00:37:23Yeah
00:37:28I'll be there
00:37:42There you go
00:37:48Sing it, baby
00:37:49I think America's gonna be there
00:37:51I think so
00:37:52You always just command the stage so perfectly
00:37:56Such confidence
00:37:58And I tell you, you are one of our exceptional voices that we have
00:38:04It's just really awesome to watch you be able to tell your sister how much you love her
00:38:10And you are a serious contender
00:38:12That was a great performance
00:38:14Thank you so much
00:38:17I love my sister so much
00:38:18I'm just seeing her just gave me all the nerves went away
00:38:22She came out, hand breaks off, no stops, just went in and I loved it
00:38:26Loved it
00:38:27Loved it
00:38:51Loved it
00:38:52I started gigging when I was nine years old
00:38:54And my parents drove me to every gig until I could get my license
00:38:56It meant a lot to have that foundation
00:38:59They're not here physically with me in Hawaii
00:39:00But my parents do know that I'm dedicating this song to them
00:39:03It's gonna be really special
00:39:05These hours aren't meant for conversation time
00:39:09Well, I'm confident
00:39:11Yeah
00:39:11It's too soon for tomorrow
00:39:13Too late for tonight
00:39:16That's why I'm shaking and pacing like I forgot my life
00:39:23And I wrote the show
00:39:26And I've lived the life
00:39:28The sky looks so vacant
00:39:33On these kind of nights
00:39:37It's gone when you're placing
00:39:43Your cautious hand in mine
00:39:49Forever maintaining
00:39:51The illusion that we are gonna be alright
00:40:00So sleep on me
00:40:01Sleep on me
00:40:03One day I'm gonna get it right
00:40:06Sleep on me, sleep on
00:40:08I'ma make it up
00:40:10Till you kind of get
00:40:12Trying to be
00:40:13Trying to be
00:40:15Someone who you like
00:40:17Oh, sleep on me, sleep on
00:40:20I'm a stranger back to sight
00:40:24Hey
00:40:26Wow
00:40:27Thank you so much
00:40:28I appreciate it, thank you
00:40:29I felt like I was at his show
00:40:31I love it
00:40:32Yeah
00:40:32Alright, Jake
00:40:33So you know you took a big chance
00:40:36Keep those vocals just as you started out at the beginning
00:40:38Strong
00:40:39Keep it all the way through
00:40:42But as a songwriter to a songwriter
00:40:44You did well
00:40:45Thank you so much
00:40:46Really kind of you guys
00:40:47Thank you
00:40:50You could hear him in a studio
00:40:53And like
00:40:54Lock him right there
00:40:55It's like watching
00:40:56Young Bruce Springsteen
00:40:59There you go
00:40:59Paul Simon
00:41:00There you go
00:41:01I don't know
00:41:02I don't know
00:41:02He ain't the artist
00:41:02He's the artist
00:41:04Sleep on me
00:41:05Sleep on me
00:41:07Sleep on me
00:41:09I like it
00:41:11I like it
00:41:26Because family is everywhere
00:41:28And they mean everything
00:41:31Aww
00:41:32Yeah
00:41:36I love this song
00:41:41Two bodies
00:41:44Riddled with scars
00:41:46From our pretense
00:41:48Intertwined in a car
00:41:51Dirty bike scene
00:41:53Stare at a driving screen now
00:41:59It's been a long year
00:42:02And all of our books
00:42:04Pages dog year
00:42:07We write out the ends
00:42:09Of our wrong steer
00:42:11And forget to read
00:42:16This is one of the most unique voices
00:42:18I've ever heard in my life
00:42:20Yet the sun was collapsing
00:42:26Until the seas rose
00:42:29And the buildings came crashing
00:42:37Everywhere, everything
00:42:39When I love you
00:42:41Till we're food for the worms
00:42:43To eat
00:42:43Till our fingers decompose
00:42:48Keep my hands in yours
00:42:54Drop slowly
00:42:56Know every route in this county
00:43:00Maybe that ain't such a bad thing
00:43:05Tell you where not to speak
00:43:13Everywhere, everything
00:43:15Everywhere, everything
00:43:16Love you
00:43:17Till we're food for the worms
00:43:19To eat
00:43:20Till our fingers decompose
00:43:25Keep my hands in yours
00:43:32Keep my hands in yours
00:43:46Every time you open your mouth
00:43:48And sing
00:43:48I want more
00:43:49I feel like
00:43:50We've seen you already
00:43:52Like kind of stepping in
00:43:53Getting a little more confidence
00:43:55In yourself
00:43:55Just keep leaning into that
00:43:57And it's so fun to watch
00:43:59And it's so fun to listen to
00:44:00Thank you so much
00:44:07Thanks, bye
00:44:13I'm obsessed with her
00:44:15So unassuming
00:44:16And I watch this crowd over here
00:44:18They weren't expecting that
00:44:19What kind of alien, unexpected, crazy voice
00:44:22Was that
00:44:24Whee
00:44:24Where'd that voice come from
00:44:26I've never heard a tone like that
00:44:28Yeah
00:44:32Welcome back
00:44:34As our Ohana round continues
00:44:36Lionel checks in on the families
00:44:38I love watching this boy
00:44:40I don't
00:44:41It's just agonizing as parents
00:44:43Who might be struggling
00:44:44With tonight's decision
00:44:45To award one platinum ticket
00:44:48I don't know what y'all are going through
00:44:49But hang in there, y'all
00:44:51I know
00:44:52They're all doing so incredible
00:44:54Yeah
00:44:54Everyone's doing amazing
00:45:10You better sing it, you better sing it
00:45:13Thank you so much
00:45:14Big boy, love you
00:45:15Well, we are keeping tabs on everybody
00:45:17On that piece of paper
00:45:18We're going to vote based on our notes
00:45:21We're very serious
00:45:22I'll tell you
00:45:23It's very difficult
00:45:25And the second platinum ticket decision
00:45:27Belongs to the industry experts
00:45:30The truth is
00:45:30Everybody deserves a shot
00:45:32The talent is so high
00:45:33That everyone literally deserves this
00:45:35But who are we going to give it to?
00:45:37It ain't about how fast I get there
00:45:41It ain't about what's waiting on the other side
00:45:51It ain't about what's waiting on the other side
00:46:00The third platinum ticket will be chosen by the idols themselves
00:46:04I just see exceptional talent, and I just don't know how I'm gonna narrow that down at all. I don't
00:46:12I don't know
00:46:22I just
00:46:34I
00:46:50It feels insane to be in the top 30. There's a lot of pressure knowing that ten people are gonna
00:46:55go home one two
00:46:56Yeah, it sounds good my dad for this round suggested photograph by Ed Sheeran
00:47:01Ed Sheeran has always been one of my favorite singers
00:47:02He had a stutter when he was younger, and he's been super open about it. It's crazy
00:47:07It's like the perfect song. I relate to it in so many ways. I'm dedicating this song
00:47:12to my grandpa
00:47:14He passed away six years ago, but he was a photographer and he spent so much of his life
00:47:20Capturing the most important moments of other people's lives
00:47:22I just felt like I could really be myself around him and we could laugh with each other
00:47:33Even though he can't be here taking pictures of me. I know he's watching right now
00:47:39Looking back at photos of him reminds me of the love that my whole family shared with him
00:47:43I'm gonna be thinking about him and just reminding the world of how how great he was
00:47:56Loving can hurt
00:48:00Loving can hurt
00:48:02Loving can hurt sometimes
00:48:05It is the only thing that I know
00:48:12It is the only thing that makes us feel alive
00:48:19It is the only thing that makes us feel alive
00:48:23We keep this love in a photograph
00:48:26We make his memories for ourselves
00:48:32When our eyes are never closing
00:48:35Hearts are never broken
00:48:37Times forever frozen still
00:48:41So you can keep me
00:48:44Inside the pocket of your riches
00:48:49Holding me close
00:48:51Holding me close
00:48:52Until our eyes meet
00:48:54You won't ever be alone
00:48:59Wait for me to come home
00:49:03Wait for me to come home
00:49:07Wait for me to come home
00:49:15Wait for me to come home
00:49:21When I'm away
00:49:23I will remember how you kissed me
00:49:29Under the lamppost back on 6th street
00:49:33Hearing you whisper through the phone
00:49:40Wait for me to come home
00:49:44Wait for me to come home
00:49:45Wait for me to come home
00:49:46Oh, my God!
00:49:49Oh, my God!
00:49:49Oh, my God!
00:49:51Oh, my God!
00:49:55I mean, it's honest and it's real
00:49:58And it's believable
00:50:00And it's just beautiful
00:50:02Thank you so much
00:50:03Thank you, guys
00:50:04Thank you
00:50:07Dude
00:50:07Dude
00:50:08Insane
00:50:10Insane vocal
00:50:11I love listening to them talk about it
00:50:14He was so consistent
00:50:14Start to finish
00:50:15He went viral already
00:50:16And I can see why, you know?
00:50:19You can tell when somebody's trembling
00:50:20The way he's standing up here
00:50:22I think that matters a lot
00:50:23It now comes down to who cuts through
00:50:25Yeah
00:50:34Hello, hello, everyone
00:50:35My name is Sheldon Riley
00:50:36And I'm from Australia
00:50:38I just want to quickly say
00:50:39How beautiful it is to me
00:50:40To see all you family here
00:50:42For this God-given talent over this side
00:50:45I know what the sacrifice is
00:50:46To be here
00:50:48Unfortunately, I don't have family here with me today
00:50:50Um
00:50:52I actually haven't had family with me
00:50:54In a long time
00:50:55On this music journey of mine
00:50:57Um
00:50:58Sorry
00:50:59We got us!
00:50:59We got us!
00:51:02Sorry, sorry
00:51:03Um
00:51:05Sometimes in life
00:51:06When you are
00:51:07Not handed the right cards
00:51:08And put in the right
00:51:10Family with the right people
00:51:12Um
00:51:14You have to build
00:51:15Your own family
00:51:16And your own home
00:51:16And that's what Ohana is to me
00:51:18So uh
00:51:19I'm really grateful to be here
00:51:21And thank you for having me
00:51:22And uh
00:51:22Thank you for being my little family here with me
00:51:24So
00:51:24Yeah
00:51:30I'm singing
00:51:30To build a home
00:51:32By Patrick Watson
00:51:33It's about
00:51:34Building that home for yourself
00:51:35That place where you don't feel alone
00:51:38I think a big reason why I've come to American Idol
00:51:40Is that I've found that for myself
00:51:42And I've built my own Ohana
00:51:43So
00:51:44It feels like the perfect song to celebrate
00:51:45Everyone that's made that happen
00:51:47There is a house
00:51:49Built out of stone
00:51:55Oh
00:51:56This
00:51:57Is a place where I
00:52:01I don't feel alone
00:52:05Oh
00:52:06This
00:52:08Is a place where I
00:52:10Where I
00:52:13I feel
00:52:13At home
00:52:15Where I feel
00:52:16At home
00:52:16Oooo
00:52:20Ooooo
00:52:21Oooo
00:52:22Oooo
00:52:23Oooo
00:52:24It turns
00:52:25I don't know.
00:52:55Oh
00:53:06For you
00:53:25Oh
00:53:35I do it helps
00:53:39No, I built a home
00:53:56I'm so sorry
00:53:57You good?
00:53:59Yeah, I'm good, I'm good
00:54:01You have so much talent and range and power in your vocals
00:54:08I feel like your brain just gets in the way
00:54:12I feel like you're kind of building up some walls in front of us every time you sing
00:54:19But you don't need to do that because you're enough
00:54:22Thank you, you're here
00:54:26That was some words of wisdom right there
00:54:29It's just gonna be a mind game I have to kind of work through
00:54:33I don't know, the industry's been really nasty to me
00:54:36I've had to put walls up for a long time
00:54:40I think that what is gonna come out of this experience for him
00:54:45He'll actually find himself
00:54:47Yeah
00:54:48Carrie, that was good
00:54:48You better preach
00:54:49That was so good
00:54:51That was deep
00:55:03My name is Julian Kalel I'm 19 years old from El Paso, Texas
00:55:06And I wrote this song called Surrender
00:55:09I auditioned with this song for my very very first audition
00:55:12My family was there
00:55:13Feels like it was only yesterday that I was in that room with those judges
00:55:17When I wrote the song Surrender I was really really down
00:55:22So I went to my dad and he told me that anxiety, the fear, whatever's out of your control
00:55:27Let it stay out of your control, it's not worth your fear
00:55:31He was the one that said surrender, surrender those feelings
00:55:36Not only were we able to help him reach lighter place, it actually turned into a song
00:55:43To see him arrive on this stage, this is everything that we've prayed for
00:55:55I just want to dedicate this song to you, Papa
00:55:58Thank you for always being by my side through my absolute worst and my best
00:56:03And I love you
00:56:04Love you Mikko
00:56:05Hi
00:56:06Hi
00:56:07He kissed the cross
00:56:08He did that
00:56:19Can I always do that?
00:56:29Bye
00:56:31me down lay me to rest. Drown my thoughts with kerosene. Bring my fears to my soul. Tired
00:56:45of fighting, tired of keeping up the side. Now I'm a couple ties in, memories of flooding
00:56:53God. So I surrender. If it's more than I wish, I'll raise a fly. But fate is innocent. Oh, I'm
00:57:06tired of death. So I'll let it go, my soul and all that's left. Lord, I hope I pass your
00:57:14test. I'll be gone without a sound when my heart fails me and I'm not around. Lord,
00:57:23and all the paths I used to cross. If something stops me, guess I've found the stories and it's
00:57:32all clear now. The only feeling bigger than love is lost. So I told him. If his war that
00:57:42I've waged, I'll raise a fly. The fate is in his hands. You know I'm tired as ever. I'm
00:57:51the heart is in his hands. Oh, I surrender. Oh, I surrender. Oh, I surrender. Oh, I surrender.
00:58:10That's an artist. That is an artist.
00:58:16You're so solid, I mean, I've heard you do that song before, and the fact that you've written that song,
00:58:23just even some of the changes in the chord progression are so mature and far beyond your age,
00:58:30and you just got the star magic, one of my favorite performances of the night.
00:58:35Love you. Thank you so much. Thank you.
00:58:38To get the opportunity to even play that song on a stage like this,
00:58:42I'm just glad that I never gave up.
00:58:44It's come full circle. For him to share it with his sister just made it all the more special.
00:58:49It just makes me so, so thankful to be loved by my parents and my family, and I'm just so
00:58:55grateful.
00:59:02Just beeping. Hold on one second.
00:59:04Takes me back to the construction days.
00:59:08Back it up.
00:59:09My name's Cutter Bradley. I'm from Florence, Alabama.
00:59:12Florence, Alabama. I know where you're from.
00:59:14I used to be a welder and a machinist, so I went to college for that.
00:59:18I've worked many jobs, from carpentry, welding, to construction.
00:59:24But music, ever since I did music, something was just poking at me, like,
00:59:27I gotta see how far I can take it.
00:59:29I'll be singing some Jason Aldean, Amarillo Sky.
00:59:32And the reason I picked that song is because it's a song about hard work,
00:59:36dedicating it to my parents right here, because they showed me what hard work is,
00:59:39and it's rubbed off on me, because I'm hard working for my dreams right now, so.
00:59:45That's right.
00:59:48Yeah, this is that tempo I was hoping for.
00:59:51I love it.
00:59:51It gets up before the dawn, packs of lunch and thermos full of coffee.
01:00:00It's another day in the dusty haze, burning rays of wear and down his body.
01:00:09The pace is worth the price of gold, it's the cheapest thing he's ever sold.
01:00:15Come on, now.
01:00:17He's still holding on.
01:00:21Just takes a tractor another round, pulls a plow across the ground.
01:00:29Sends up another prayer.
01:00:32He says, Lord, I never complain, I never ask why.
01:00:36Please don't let my dreams run dry.
01:00:50He says, Lord, I never complain, I never ask why.
01:01:06Please don't let my dreams run dry.
01:01:11Lord, I need, Lord, I need this San Marino sky.
01:01:19Thank y'all.
01:01:25Great song choice for you, and I tell you, rocking overalls in Hawaii.
01:01:30I tell you what, that's pretty amazing.
01:01:33You really impressed me with where you went vocally.
01:01:36I enjoyed it.
01:01:37Great job.
01:01:38Thank you so much.
01:01:39Thank y'all.
01:01:41Taking the part, playing it, swinging it around, and then going out to the audience, I was like,
01:01:46Hey, I see you, I see you.
01:01:48Is everybody crushing down there?
01:01:50Yes.
01:01:51Keri, Keri's crushing too.
01:01:53I said, no.
01:01:54I see where you're coming from, and you are correct, ma'am.
01:02:00With the added pressure of not only the judges, but also the industry experts deciding their fate,
01:02:06the weight of the moment is getting to some.
01:02:09The industry experts are going to be voting for us, which is scary.
01:02:13She was missing was a little bit of confidence.
01:02:15You can tell she's one of the younger performers.
01:02:17She doesn't have the experience.
01:02:18There will absolutely be more pressure.
01:02:20I thought she was a superstar.
01:02:22I agree.
01:02:25Oh!
01:02:26That's a steal wrong.
01:02:27It's super scary to know that they're going to be watching and judging.
01:02:30It looked like she was a little bored.
01:02:33No.
01:02:33What are you talking about?
01:02:35Oh, my goodness.
01:02:36That was storytelling.
01:02:38I wish she would have looked over here, but I thought she brought the power to the song.
01:02:43That was beautiful.
01:02:44The way she said it sounds better than you say.
01:02:47I think what you said.
01:02:49Definitely got to bring my A-game.
01:02:51I got to, you know, I got to do something.
01:02:54You got it, Mike.
01:02:59You got it.
01:03:13You're going to love somebody.
01:03:16Hold on as long and as strong, as close as you can, until you can.
01:03:23He's just a baby.
01:03:25It just felt like it was, something was a little off.
01:03:28Maybe it wasn't his best performance.
01:03:30I was seeing, like, a country Bieber with the, you know, the little hair flip.
01:03:36Yes!
01:03:37Yes!
01:03:38Yes!
01:03:38That made me fall on.
01:03:39That's exactly right!
01:03:41Surely, the co-editor-in-chief of Rolling Stone is going to be here.
01:03:44I am, like, freaking out.
01:03:48It's a little duck.
01:03:50Hi, everyone.
01:03:51My name is Kindle.
01:03:52And today I'm actually singing a song that I wrote.
01:03:55It's called Woman of Me.
01:03:57I wrote it for my mom.
01:03:58I can't look at her too long or I will immediately cry.
01:04:01My mom is my favorite person in the whole entire world.
01:04:04She has been a backbone and just a rock in my life.
01:04:11But growing up, we had a tendency to clash.
01:04:15I was a pretty rebellious kid.
01:04:16Like, I started hanging around with the wrong people, dropped out of school, moved all the
01:04:20way to the other side of the country in L.A.
01:04:23I needed to go and explore the world and learn and fall flat on my face.
01:04:28And I'm sure that, like, I'm sure that really broke her heart, you know?
01:04:37Whoa.
01:04:39I think that sometimes before you can watch someone fly, you have to let them hit rock bottom.
01:04:45And it was the hardest thing that I've ever done.
01:04:48She was 18 years old and she needed to go.
01:04:52She needed to figure it out.
01:04:55Having a mother that loved me enough to let me go but be standing there with open arms when
01:05:03I ran back is a gratitude I can't fully even express.
01:05:09And so I tried with this song.
01:05:12And I just, I really want to honor her with this.
01:05:14I really want her to understand just how special she is to me.
01:05:25I'm a daughter of a God-fearing woman.
01:05:31Countless nights she probably laid there awake.
01:05:34To her surprise, I did everything I shouldn't want to win.
01:05:41Both hearts would break.
01:05:46From time to time, there's a look in her eyes.
01:05:52She didn't think she did it right.
01:05:55Oh, God.
01:05:55She was the light when there was no light I could see.
01:06:01Gave me a reason to fight.
01:06:06She wiped my eyes when the world turned its back on me.
01:06:12Taught me all my wrong from rights.
01:06:16I couldn't fit all of my thanks in a bottle.
01:06:22It'd break before it drifted into a sea.
01:06:27She was a girl before she was a woman.
01:06:33Now she's made a woman of me.
01:06:37Very good.
01:06:38She wiped my eyes when the world turned its back on me.
01:06:44Taught me all my wrong from rights.
01:06:49I couldn't fit all of my thanks in a bottle.
01:06:54It'd break before it drifted into a sea.
01:06:59She was a girl before she was a woman.
01:07:04Now she's made a woman.
01:07:07She's made a woman.
01:07:10She's made a woman of me.
01:07:21That songwriting is incredible.
01:07:25Kendall, I just want to hear more of your songs.
01:07:29You're such a great storyteller.
01:07:31And you have the voice to back it all up.
01:07:35So if this was truly a moment meant for you right now.
01:07:40Thank you so much.
01:07:47Perfect.
01:07:47No complaint.
01:07:48That's my American Idol.
01:07:50I can't hear.
01:07:51I'm so proud of her.
01:07:53I couldn't even look at my mom.
01:07:55Like, I knew I would cry.
01:07:55But she was right there on my heart.
01:07:58And I just, like, felt her.
01:07:59And that was such a special moment.
01:08:01But I wish I could do it again and again and again.
01:08:09Come on, let's give it up for Phil and Lee.
01:08:16I'll be singing All I Want by Codaline, dedicating it to my great-grandmother.
01:08:21Her name was Mama Rice to me.
01:08:22But to everybody else, she was Nancy.
01:08:24The song that he picked, it means a lot to the family.
01:08:28She was a huge supporter of me.
01:08:30And this is one of the songs.
01:08:32This is one of the songs she loved for me to sing to her.
01:08:36I sung it in hospice, unfortunately, before she passed away.
01:08:39So hopefully y'all like it.
01:08:42All right, all right.
01:08:44Wow, yeah.
01:08:50All right, let's go.
01:09:15And if you love me
01:09:19Why'd you leave me
01:09:24Take my body
01:09:27Take my body
01:09:31And all I want is
01:09:35And all I need is
01:09:40To find somebody
01:09:42I'll find somebody
01:09:48I'll find somebody
01:09:49Like you
01:09:54If you love me
01:09:58Why'd you leave me
01:10:02Take my body
01:10:05Take my body
01:10:10And all I want is
01:10:14And all I need is
01:10:18Find somebody
01:10:21I'll find somebody
01:10:28Like you
01:10:30Ooh
01:10:33Ooh
01:10:34Ooh
01:10:34Ooh
01:10:38Ooh
01:10:38Ooh
01:10:39Ooh
01:10:40Ooh
01:10:41Ooh
01:10:41Ooh
01:10:41Ooh
01:10:41Ooh
01:10:42Ooh
01:10:42Ooh
01:10:42Ooh
01:10:45Ooh
01:10:46Ooh
01:10:46Ooh
01:10:46Wow
01:10:46Wow
01:10:47He's getting so proud there, buddy.
01:10:49I have a place.
01:10:49And he's so sweet.
01:10:50Yeah, he is.
01:10:51He's got that grit.
01:10:52Teddy Swims, Chris Stapleton.
01:10:54You just took us on a journey.
01:10:56You brought us in when it was meant to feel intense.
01:11:01And then on the soaring notes, you kind of took us to this whole other place where we could just
01:11:06kind of feel that swell.
01:11:08That's a gift.
01:11:09Great job.
01:11:11Thank you so much.
01:11:12Thank you so much.
01:11:12I realized this voice could go that high for that long.
01:11:16Oh my gosh.
01:11:17All right.
01:11:17To be able to take a song that is usually taken in a completely different direction and bring it here
01:11:22was magic.
01:11:24So proud of it.
01:11:27I can't talk right.
01:11:28I can't even breathe.
01:11:30That was amazing.
01:11:32To make it to the top 30, it feels like incredible.
01:11:38You are meant to be here.
01:11:40I'm just enjoying it and soaking it in every which way.
01:11:43You looking for me?
01:11:44For the old home around, I picked Stand Up by Cynthia Erivo.
01:11:48I will dedicate this song today to my lovely mother that's in the audience over here to the side.
01:11:54My mom, she has always stood up for me.
01:11:57She has always paved the way for me, been there every step of the way.
01:12:02I had Micaiah, when I was at college, sing a mom.
01:12:06And so there were times where I didn't know how I was going to do some things.
01:12:12We would come home from school, and then we would go to my grandparents' house and eat dinner.
01:12:16I didn't know then, as a child, that was solely because we didn't have food.
01:12:22Everybody hits rough spots, but I hit a rough one.
01:12:25It was a really dark time.
01:12:27For her to allow me to solely be a child and have no worries, she never let us see her
01:12:35suffer.
01:12:39When my mom hears me perform this song, I hope she feels that I will always be here for her,
01:12:47through every step of the way the same way she was there for me,
01:12:49and that one day, this all will pay off.
01:12:52I've been walking with my face turned to the sun.
01:13:03It can be.
01:13:04Oh, I got eyes in the back of my head, just in case I have to run.
01:13:13It's about to get dirty. It's about to get dirty.
01:13:17Watch the clouds roll back and the stars fill the night.
01:13:22That's when I want to stand up.
01:13:26Take my people with me.
01:13:29Together we are going to a brand new home.
01:13:40And I know what's around the bend might be hard to face,
01:13:49cause I'm alone.
01:13:53And I just might know, but Lord knows I tried.
01:13:59I just might know, but I can't see you in the air.
01:14:07Okay, take my people with me.
01:14:11Come on.
01:14:12Together we are going to a brand new home.
01:14:18Far across the river, can you hear freedom calling,
01:14:24Pulling me to a step, we're gonna keep on keeping on.
01:14:30I can feel it in my heart.
01:14:37I can feel it in my heart.
01:14:46I can feel it in my heart.
01:14:51See the sound, Kyle.
01:14:53You better see it, baby.
01:14:59Micaiah came here to kill.
01:15:03It was so emotional.
01:15:04It showed everybody what you can do.
01:15:07It had southern moments.
01:15:08It had southern gospel moments.
01:15:10It had uplifting moments.
01:15:11And really way to step out there and show us a whole other level of what you can do.
01:15:16Thank you so much.
01:15:23You guys just left it all out there on the stage.
01:15:26But I feel really good.
01:15:27And hopefully I get a platinum ticket tonight.
01:15:30What a way to close the shop.
01:15:31She took me to church.
01:15:33She took me to church.
01:15:35I loved every second of it.
01:15:38Space for you.
01:15:44Coming up.
01:15:45This is crazy.
01:15:46Who will survive to sing for your vote?
01:15:49Find out after the break.
01:15:51I really don't want to go home.
01:15:54Welcome back to American Idol's brand new Ohana round.
01:15:58All 30 of our Idol hopefuls have performed.
01:16:00And now it's time to whittle them down to the top 20 who get the chance to sing for America's
01:16:06Vote.
01:16:06I am nervous because everyone was impressive.
01:16:09I know you can see a lot of voices out there.
01:16:11I don't know.
01:16:12I don't know.
01:16:13But first, there are three platinum tickets up for grabs.
01:16:17And each one secures one of those spots.
01:16:20But for the first time ever, it's not the judges making the final call.
01:16:24The first will be chosen by the industry tastemakers.
01:16:29This is tough, y'all.
01:16:30The second by the Ohana, the family members.
01:16:33A lot of powerhouses.
01:16:34And the third platinum ticket by their peers, our Idol hopefuls.
01:16:39This is crazy.
01:16:40Now, the Ohana cannot vote for their own family members.
01:16:44And the Idols cannot vote for themselves.
01:16:48It's really about whose performance moved them the most.
01:16:53It is a gut-wrenching decision to have to make.
01:16:57Whatever hit me in the heart, that's who I want.
01:16:59It's difficult.
01:17:00I mean, I think just people that really stepped it up to, you know, superstar level.
01:17:05As someone who's watched the show for so many seasons, who's written about it, who's covered it,
01:17:10being on this side is, it's really stressful.
01:17:13Just seeing a baby.
01:17:14This is literally the hardest thing that I've ever done in my life,
01:17:17to have someone's career in your hands.
01:17:20But we're gonna make someone tonight.
01:17:23There we go.
01:17:24That's it.
01:17:25Which is also something to look forward to.
01:17:27We're making history up here, y'all.
01:17:30Okay.
01:17:31This is an unprecedented and first look at which contestants have the ability to move other people.
01:17:39So, let's reveal the results for our Platinum Ticket winners.
01:17:45First, as chosen by their peers, the Idol Platinum Ticket goes to...
01:17:54Jordan!
01:17:55Congratulations, Jordan!
01:18:00You're incredible.
01:18:02I just had chills the whole time.
01:18:05Take a look at that, Jordan.
01:18:07That is yours.
01:18:08Congratulations.
01:18:10Good job.
01:18:11Way to go.
01:18:16All right, the next Platinum Ticket, chosen by Ohana, the family members, goes to...
01:18:25Brooks!
01:18:26Congratulations, Brooks!
01:18:29I have not heard a voice like this, ever.
01:18:32You did a look on his face.
01:18:33You did a look on his face.
01:18:34You did a look on his face.
01:18:36You have earned this, my friend Brooks.
01:18:38Congratulations.
01:18:39Good job.
01:18:40What was that look on your face when we called your name?
01:18:43Surprised.
01:18:44Surprised.
01:18:46And finally, the Industry Platinum Ticket goes to...
01:18:56Kindle.
01:19:02You've got artists written all over you, and I'm loving every minute of it.

01:19:29Who makes it through to America's vote?
01:19:32This is the worst part.

01:19:39No, they're here.
01:19:39We're now eliminated because they might fall in the same category.
