00:00After a year of Trump's cuts to foreign aid, has humanitarian funding suffered?
00:09Humanitarian funding has been declining since 2023, showing how vulnerable it is to the
00:15political whims of the day. The biggest blow to overseas spending happened in 2025 when the
00:21U.S. Secretary of State announced that 83% of U.S. aid's international development programs
00:27would be canceled. It's a similar story around the world. Between 2025 and 2026, the total global
00:34humanitarian funding plummeted from around 23.97 billion euros to around 7.34 billion euros,
00:42according to the latest data from the Financial Tracking Service. The United Nations High
00:47Commissioner for Refugees and the World Food Programme are the top organizations receiving
00:52a higher amount of funds in 2026. Currently, the EU and its member states account for more than 40%
00:59of development aid globally, while the U.S. accounts for 28.3%. The majority of Europe's humanitarian aid
01:07is sent to Ukraine, but the exact numbers could be said to change as the EU begins negotiations
01:13on its budget for 2028 to 2034. The development part of the EU's budget, called the Global Europe
01:20Initiative, is set to increase 75%. A large part will be dedicated to Ukraine, but also to other
01:27countries in line to join the bloc.
