00:07Things are a little different out here in the country.
00:10You still have to hustle and bustle.
00:14Your neighbours can sometimes be a bit noisy.
00:17Time moves a little slower.
00:25But you don't get this in the city.
00:35We're in Taupo today looking for lake views and family getaway spots with Brent and Sue.
00:41Recent newlyweds, they've got a large blended family who just love getting together.
00:45So we're hoping to find a home that can play host to them all.
00:49We've got a couple of curve balls to throw at them today.
00:51Let's see how they handle them.

01:41Sue put an ad on the Hawkesby Classic Motorcycle Club website, which I answered.
01:47She wanted to go for a ride as a pillion passenger on the back of a motorcycle.
01:50And here we are today, five years later.
01:55We got married in March.
01:56It's been quite a journey.
01:58I moved here two years ago from Havelock North.
02:02We were dating when I bought the house, so it's not actually large enough for both of us.
02:08We do quite a bit of motorbike riding around Taupo.
02:12We spend a lot of time on the lake.
02:14We have a jet ski and pack it up with picnics and go to all the different bays.
02:18It's close to family.
02:19It's beautiful.
02:22The idea is to try and find a holiday home for our extended family.
02:28We have a blended family of, I've got three daughters.
02:31Sue's got a daughter and a son.
02:33So we're looking for a place that is going to accommodate that.
02:37Anything between 1.4 and 2 mil.
02:40It has to be close to amenities for the families.
02:44Walks around the lake, needs to have a lot of room, maybe two lounges.
02:48If we could find a place with a bit bigger garage, there'd be more motorcycles in it.
02:59Located just an hour south of Rotorua, I tend to find myself coming back to Taupo quite often.
03:05This waterfront gem sits on Aotearoa's largest lake and is home to an amazing community.
03:12With the surrounding nature that's perfect for their motorcycle rides, I'm not surprised that Brent and Sue are looking for
03:18a property together in this remarkable town.

03:45Well, I've since upgraded my Harley so it's a lot louder now.

12:38These avid bikers are looking for a house that has enough space for all their motorbikes,
12:42as well as room for the family to stay.
12:45Now, they did mention they'd be interested in a holiday house of sorts.
12:49So I took that brief, and I absolutely ran with it.
12:52Because this last house is truly one of a kind.
12:58You've reached the destination, but how good's the journey to get here?

13:07When you get over that hill and come down and around and see this beautiful cabin,
13:11perched on the edge of the world, looking out over the lake.

17:10As I was passing through, a unique cafe caught my eye, and I just had to stop in.
17:15I had a chat with Jo from Latte Cafe and Gallery to hear more about it.
17:22Jo, how cool is this place, Latte?
17:24This is like a labour of love, right?
17:25And it all started with your mum.
17:27Yes, it did.
17:27Absolutely.
17:28So yeah, it is a total labour of love.
17:30My mum started all this.
17:32We moved to this property in 1997.
17:35Wow.
17:35We had a mosaic studio here, and we had a ceramic studio here, and now we're doing what we
17:40do today, which is all the clay flowers and those sorts of things.
17:43I opened up the cafe 20 years ago.
17:47So tell me what people's reactions are when they first see this.
17:50When someone comes here, and they've never been here, and they're like, wow, this is
17:53amazing.
17:54You're like, oh, wow, yeah.
17:55It's good to remind yourself.
17:57It is quite phenomenal.
17:59Your mum had a vision, didn't she?
18:00Yeah, she did, and it grew and grew and grew.
18:04The cafe is a huge part of why people stop in, and then they wander up to the gallery
18:07and have a look at what you can buy as well.
18:09Yeah, absolutely.
18:09So Kelly, who runs the gallery, she's been with us for over 20 years.
18:14She makes all the ceramics with Steph, produce all the ceramics that you see in the garden.
18:20What are you famous for, do you reckon?
18:22Probably in the cafe, our eggs benny.

18:25Yeah, and our coffees.
18:27The art side of things, definitely our ceramic flowers.

18:30You've been a part of the community for a long time.
18:32What is it that's so special about where we are right now?
18:35Topal's a phenomenal place.
18:36I'm very lucky to be able to bring up my three children in a town like this.
18:39It's an awesome lifestyle.
18:41We've got the mountain up the road, which we go to as much as we can, and we get out
18:46on
18:46the lake.
18:47Getting out on the lake gives you a whole different perspective on life.
18:50Yeah, it's really refreshing.
18:52This place, honestly, just feels like a playground.
18:54I can imagine just coming here, relaxing, maybe taking away a little ceramic flower as well.

19:13After some thinking time, Sue and Brent have let me know they've picked a favourite from
19:16our house hunt.

19:41So, based on the brief, I took it in a different direction slightly.

19:46So, the first house that we looked at, you probably didn't see the vision from the
19:50street, but once we were inside, you could understand why I brought you there, couldn't

19:57But once we were inside, we were actually gobsmacked at how well set out it was.

20:14And that's, Sue, what you were looking for, right?
20:15A place for the whole family together.
20:17We could ease into that place easily as a holiday house, couldn't we?

20:22Then, do you remember what happened when we walked into house number two?

20:33A beautifully appointed, beautifully crafted home, wasn't it?

20:44I mean, there was a playset already there.
20:46That could be part of the Chattels if you choose to, you know, get the youngins around as well.

20:56But when you saw that property, it's wow.
20:59It was an amazing, amazing, well put together home.
21:02There was some absolute craftsmanship going to that place and the views were stunning.

21:11I mean, that's a love affair, that home.
21:14It was a very spectacular property, wasn't it?

21:18What's the thinking?
21:19Where have you come to in terms of a decision?
21:22We've sort of come to the conclusion that maybe we might change our minds and live in house number two
21:28and turn our existing home into the holiday home.
21:32So house two, I mean, I saw what it did to you when you walked into that home.
21:36So it was that great that it could have completely changed plans.
21:40Absolutely.
21:41I didn't exactly nail the brief, but maybe it's a whole new journey that you're about to go on.
21:45So I'm going to call that a success.
