Britain will “step up” defensive support for Gulf states after Iran attacked energy sites across the region in a “serious escalation” of the war, the Defence Secretary has said.John Healey told the Press Association that Tehran’s attacks overnight threatened to further destabilise the region as he reiterated the Government’s call for de-escalation.

00:07We share the concern of the irradiated attacks that we've seen overnight.

00:17And we will step up the defensive support that we can offer to those Gulf states.
00:23We're already, and we have done from day one, been flying UK pilots, defensive missions,
00:28not just protecting our own forces and our citizens that are out in the Middle East,
00:32but some of those crucial ally countries like Qatar.
00:36And I met with Gulf leaders yesterday, UK industry leaders,
00:42and we were looking at exactly the sort of defensive systems that the UK could help provide
00:46that will make their citizens, their gas and oil infrastructure,
00:52on which not just they depend, but we, the whole world, depend
00:56because the impact we felt here in the prices.
