00:31Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio.
00:34Now, let's think about what professions children would consider to be dream jobs.
00:39And I read the other day about a chap who's making a living out of building huge structures out of
00:47Lego.
00:48He's built a horse, a life-size horse. Fine, I suppose so.
00:52He's built the model of a jetliner engine, a dreamliner engine.
00:58And then he thought, well, I'll tell you what, getting near Christmas, I'll throw up a 35-foot Christmas tree
01:04made out of Lego.
01:05Wow.
01:06Now, I thought, when I was a kid, what would have been my dream job?
01:09And, of course, in the 50s, when I was a young kid, it was a sort of the time of
01:14world records.
01:16The jet engine was coming into commercial service.
01:19Now, I remember John Cobb, he was racing on water when he crashed and sadly was killed, and Malcolm Campbell
01:25came along.
01:26So there were these very exciting, accessible world records, and they were just pushing it right to the very limit.
01:33And I thought, are all those exciting times over?
01:36Mm, I don't know.
01:37But what about that chap the other day?
01:39I'm sorry, I can't remember his name.
01:41I'm sure it'll be in the Guinness Book of Records or the world records, who cycled around the world in
01:4679 days.
01:47Did you read about him?
01:49Quite extraordinary.
01:50Yeah, I saw all the interviews with him.
01:52Yeah, he did.
01:52Amazing.
01:53An incredible feat.
01:54Well, you're a big cyclist.
01:55Do you fancy that?
01:56When I was younger, I think I wanted to play for Man United.
02:00That was more my ambition.
02:01Is it too late?
02:03They still don't have a women's team.
02:05What?
02:05And I'm, you know, 31 now, knocking on 32.
02:08I think it's probably past it.
02:09You know.
02:11Well, you're one of their most faithful fans in the next life.
02:14All right.
02:16Who's with us?
02:17None other than Bradley Horrocks, Rachel, who had a bit of a narrow, narrow squeak.
02:22I think you won 82 to 70, but only on the last sort of throw the dice, as it were.
02:28Yes, yeah.
02:29But nonetheless, you've now got four wins under your belt.
02:32Yeah?
02:33That's correct, yeah.
02:33So, well done.
02:34Well done.
02:34You're joined today by Steve Harris, retired manufacturing supervisor from Warrington, who's a big Liverpool fan, Rachel.
02:41Yes.
02:42Big Liverpool.
02:42He was in Rome in 77.
02:44Yes.
02:45What sort of night did you have there?
02:47It was a fantastic night.
02:48It was the first time they won the European Cup, and there was about 30,000 Scousers there.
02:54Really?
02:54To cheer them on.
02:55It was a sea of red and white.
02:56And you were young to up in your 20s?
02:58Yeah, mid-20s then, yeah.
03:00Brilliant stuff.
03:00Yeah.
03:01All right.

11:29Eight.
11:29And Bradley?
11:31Outlined.
11:32Steve?
11:33Uncoiled.
11:34Uncoiled.
11:35Great word, yeah.
11:36Very good.
11:36Well done.
11:40Yeah.
11:41Linda and Susie combined have produced...
11:44We found those two, but you found a great one, Susie.
11:47And there's a third one, yes.
11:48Eduction.
11:49From deducing something to bring something out,
11:52so latent talent might be deduced,
11:53and that is eduction.
11:54To read it out, yeah.
11:55Yeah.
11:5637 plays 20.
11:57It's numbers now for Steve.
11:59Two large and four small, please, Rachel.
12:02Thank you, Steve.
12:03Two big ones, four little,
12:05and the four little ones are seven, four, three, eight,
12:10and the big ones 50 and 75.
12:13And the target to reach 634.
12:166-3-4.
12:48Yes, Steve?
12:506-3-6.
12:52Two away.
12:53Bradley Horrocks?
12:556-3-5, not written down.
12:57Let's hear from you, Bradley.
13:0075 plus four.
13:0175 plus four, 79.
13:04Times by eight.
13:05Times by eight is 632.
13:07Another three.
13:08Another three, one away.
13:106-3-5.
13:11Pretty good.
13:13But 6-3-4 is really what we needed.
13:15How difficult is that?
13:17I found a way if you say 75 times eight is 600,
13:22add the 50 for 650,
13:24and then seven minus three is four,
13:27times it by the four for 16,
13:28and take that away, you get 6-3-4.
13:30Smashing.
13:31Perfect.
13:34So, of course, standing 44 to Steve.
13:37In Bradley's favour, we turn to Linda.
13:39And you've got some tips for us today.
13:42Yeah.
13:43So, you know, mental health is something people speak about a lot.
13:46And I think sometimes we forget that it's doing the basics that helps.
13:50So, for example, getting enough sleep.
13:53Now, we used to think that depression caused problems with sleep,
13:57sleep disturbance.
13:58Now we've kind of figured out that it's also the other way around.
14:01If you don't sleep, you're more likely to feel pain more intently,
14:06to feel moods more intently.
14:08So, making sure that you get seven or eight hours a night,
14:11really important.
14:12Move.
14:13There's study after study that shows that moderate exercise helps,
14:18not just physiologically, but psychologically.
14:20It helps clear your mind.
14:21It helps, you know, level out chemicals within your brain.
14:25You know, great endorphin rushes.
14:27A really, you know, great way to keep things under wraps.
14:30Eat well.
14:31Make sure that you're not eating junk.
14:34We know that proper nourishment helps.
14:36So, eat, sleep, and move.
14:37And then I think that the fourth one,
14:39and the one that I think is particularly interesting,
14:41is how you think about things.
14:43Get on top of your thoughts.
14:44It's interesting that nothing in and of itself is stressful or worrying.
14:51It's the way that we understand it.
14:52So, the theory in psychology goes is,
14:54first I think, and then I feel, right?
14:57So, on a good day, imagine you're walking down the corridor of your work,
15:01and someone sees you that you know, but they don't say hi.
15:03You kind of think, oh, well, they didn't see me.
15:05That's fine.
15:06On a bad day, what do you think?
15:07Have I done something to them?
15:08Are they upset with me?
15:10What's going on?
15:10So, you start ruminating, getting those really negative thoughts.
15:13So, it's really important to kind of be on top of those thoughts.
15:17Are you catastrophizing?
15:18Are you jumping to conclusions?
15:21Are you polarizing?
15:22Are you kind of thinking, either I have to be perfect,
15:24and everything has to be just right, or everything's terrible?
15:27Get on top of those thinking errors.
15:29So, doing these basic things, kind of the stuff around sleeping
15:33and moving and eating, but also being on top of your thoughts,
15:36I think, is a great way forward when it comes to making sure
15:39you're taking care of your mental health.
15:41Good advice.
15:43Yeah.
15:47Thank you, Linda.
15:48Brilliant stuff.
15:4944 plays, 20.
15:50Bradley in the lead.

19:45100 times four, take eight.
19:47Yeah, very simple.

19:48And Steve?
19:49Four times 75 is 300.
19:51Yeah.
19:52Plus 100, minus the eight.
19:53Yeah.
19:54We can work that out.
19:54There we go.
19:58So, score standing 68 to 36.
20:01Steve on 36.
20:02We'll have our second key time teaser, which is Terry Does.
20:06And the clue.
20:06Terry does break a lot of things, but even he can't wreck a warship.
20:12Terry does break a lot of things, but even he can't wreck a warship.
20:32Welcome back.
20:33I left you with the clue, Terry does break a lot of things, but even he can't wreck a warship.
20:39And the answer to that is that it's a destroyer.
20:43Destroyer.
20:44So, 68 to 36, Bradley in the lead, and it's Steve's letters game.

22:15Yeah, that's not there.
22:16Pimped, but not timped, sorry.
22:18I'd like a bit of a standstill.
22:19And over in the corner, what have you got there?
22:21Linda, Susie?
22:22We got tamped for a six.
22:25Yes, to pack something down.
22:27So either something with a hole with explosive,
22:29or you can tamp down tobacco in your pipe to pack something firmly.
22:33Mm.
22:33They had little tampers, little metal tampers, didn't they?
22:36So there's a packet in, as you say.
22:3868 to 36, and it's Bradley's letters game.

23:54Rioters.
23:55Rioters.
23:57Yes, absolutely fine.
23:58Yep, Sotoir is the fine gold necklace with the very fine chain, in fact.
24:03Very good.
24:04And Linda?
24:06Susie?
24:07Just one more, Taylors.
24:09All right, 75 pays 43 as we turn to Susie
24:12for her wonderful origins of words.
24:15Yes, Susie?
24:16Well, two book-related words today, Nick,
24:19and I'm going to start with something you really don't want in your life,
24:22and that's libel of any kind.
24:24That is a written defamatory statement about you
24:27or information about you, as opposed to Slandra,
24:29which is always spoken.
24:31Libel goes back to the Latin libellus,
24:33which meant a little book.
24:35A libe was a book.
24:36It gave us library too.
24:38And that's just what it was originally.
24:40It was a very short essay or a treatise on some particular subject.
24:43But it moved on to encompass a leaflet or a pamphlet
24:47that was circulated to lots and lots of people.
24:50And because of the political pressures of the day,
24:53very often they would contain quite vehement
24:55and aggressive attacks on the government,
24:58and they were often defamatory.
25:00So defamatory, in fact, that that's where we got from libellus,
25:03that little book, the idea of libel.
25:05And I mentioned a pamphlet that was distributed around,
25:09and I love the story of pamphlet
25:10because it's so far removed from the meaning it has today.
25:14Not all of us will appreciate the pamphlets
25:15popping through our letterbox most days.
25:18But it originated in the late 1300s.
25:20It's very, very old.
25:21And it meant, again, a small treatise,
25:24or another word consisting of pages without covers.
25:27But its origin is quite wonderful.
25:28It comes from Pamphile,
25:31which was a French title of a completely anonymous
25:34but extremely popular 12th-century comic love poem.
25:37It was written in Latin,
25:39Pamphilus Sudoemore, or Pamphilus on love.
25:43And Pamphilus was the name of the hero
25:45who got his name from Pamphilos,
25:47meaning beloved by all in Greek.
25:50Don't quite know the subject of the poem,
25:52but I do know it was incredibly popular.
25:54And Pamphilus then produced Pamphilet,
25:57a little edition of Pamphilus, if you like.
26:00And, as I say, it was so popular,
26:01it was widely copied and passed around from person to person
26:04in the form of a very thin leaflet.
26:06So from that hero of an extremely popular love poem,
26:09we get the very prosaic word pamphlet today.
26:13Very good.
26:17That's very good.
26:18And the pamphleteers,
26:20one who hands them out on the street, I guess,
26:22through your letterbox these days.
26:2475 to 43.
26:26Right.
26:27Steve, your letters again.
26:29Consonant, please.

27:35And your six? Radish.
27:38Radish. Steve?

27:42Ooh. I think that is going to be absolutely excellent.
27:44It's all one word. Well done.
27:46Oh, super.
27:51Well played, Steve. Yeah.
27:5351 now to Bradley 75.

28:04Nothing else, no.
28:05That's it. Redheads.

29:28Happy enough?
29:29Yes.
29:31What else can we find in the corner, I wonder?
29:34Or have we found?
29:35Linda?
29:36We found tonalite.
29:38What is this tonalite, Susie?
29:40It's a term from geology, quite a specialist term.
29:43It's a coarse-grained plutonic rock,
29:45plutonic rock being a type of igneous rock.
29:48Well done.
29:51APPLAUSE
29:52So, 82 to 58,
29:54and it's into the final numbers game.
29:56Steve?
29:57One large and five small, please, Rachel.
30:00Thank you, Steve.
30:01One from the top row, five little ones.
30:02And the final numbers game of the day is...
30:05Seven.
30:06Five.
30:07Six.

30:09Nine.
30:10And the large one, 25.
30:12And a target.

30:57Same for Bradley.
30:59I'm sure you are.
31:00Yeah, all right.
31:01So, as we reach 92 to 68, we turn to the final round.
31:07We reach for our buzzers.
31:11And we roll today's Countdown Conundrum.
31:17Bradley?
31:18Wow.
31:19Yes, Bradley?
31:20Darkening.
31:21Darkening.
31:22Let's see whether you're right.
31:25Fantastic.
31:30Well done, indeed.
31:32Well done.
31:33Come to you in a second.
31:35102, my word.
31:38Steve, when you came onto the set early, you saw, oh, I'm a bit nervous.
31:42You played really well.
31:44And as soon as you scored, you were off.
31:47You scored first time, I think.
31:49And didn't show any nerves at all.
31:51You played really well.
31:5268.
31:52It's better than most of his competitors have done.
31:57Well done.
31:58Thank you very much.
31:58You take this back to Warrington with our very best wishes.
32:02Well done.
32:02Good luck to Liverpool.
32:04Try and get back to Rome some other time.
32:06Now then.
32:08102.
32:09You've only had one little slip up when you were sub 100, I think.
32:12So it's fantastic.
32:13You've got five wins.
32:15Brilliant.
32:15We'll see you tomorrow.
32:16Congratulations, too.
32:18Well done.
32:18And we'll see Linda tomorrow and Susie, too.
32:22But before you go, Linda, I think you were involved with a project called Inside the Mind of a Serial
32:27Killer.
32:28Is that right?
32:29Yeah.
32:29What's that about?
32:30It's a show.
32:32I believe it's on Netflix now.
32:33And it kind of looks at what it takes to make someone a serial killer.
32:38And it's quite interesting because, like most things, it's not just your experiences.
32:43It's not just your biology.
32:45It's kind of a combination of everything.
32:47It's a combination of who you are as an individual, your personality traits, how you were raised, what happens to
32:54you,
32:54and that awful opportunity that means you just kind of go over the edge.
32:58So there's some really kind of interesting cases that we try and examine and figure out at what point did
33:05it all go wrong.
33:06It was fascinating to work on, but also really chilling to work on, I have to say.
33:11I bet.
33:11I bet.
33:12Yeah.
33:12And I suppose, you know, we do get these characters.
33:17And it sends a shudder through a nation, doesn't it, these sort of terrible murders?
33:23It does.
33:23And, look, I think, you know, the way that we respond to tragedy when we hear about it is that
33:29it feels much closer to us.
33:30And we have to always remember the difference between probability and possibility.
33:34Absolutely, these things happen, but they're very unlikely.
33:36And I think, to a large extent, what our country's going through for the last little while with, you know,
33:41different, you know, horrors, different attacks and everything.
33:44I think these things tend to be exaggerated in our minds.
33:46But, again, cognitive therapy are, you know, are they horrific?
33:50Yes.
33:50Are they likely to happen?
33:51Not really.
33:52Exactly.
33:53We'll see you tomorrow.
33:54Well done.
33:54And see you tomorrow, Susie.
33:55See you then.
33:56All right.
33:56And Rachel, too, of course.
33:57See you tomorrow.
33:58See you tomorrow.
33:59Look forward to it.
34:00Same time, same place.
34:01You be sure of it.
