00:09Okay, good afternoon and thank you for joining us. We'll take the usual format today and begin with Sky Sports
00:16and Gail Davis. Off you go, Gail.
00:18Good afternoon. To be gone through the season, he's out. I guess Charlotte is probably the biggest concern, isn't he?
00:26Yeah. It wasn't until later after the game that I saw the image. I think everyone's seen it and then
00:32you're really, really worried for the next day. Obviously, it's never good that Trevor is out for any period of
00:38time, but fortunately, it's nowhere near as serious as we first feared. It's still a serious injury, but we're looking
00:45at a period of maybe six weeks,
00:47which is disappointing. But from where we were a couple of days ago, straight after the game, yeah, we are
00:56in a better place than what we thought.
00:58And shortly by Cole, you look good. How far away is he going to start getting back in?
01:04Yeah, with an ACL, he's hitting all of the benchmarks that he needs to, but we need to keep making
01:11sure that he keeps going past certain levels.
01:14It's just brilliant to have his presence back on the training pitch, and we want to see him back out
01:18there on the pitch as soon as possible, but within the right time frame.
01:22He's still looking at a good while, yeah.
01:24So, hopefully this season's here?
01:26Hopefully. That is the hope, yeah, which would be a massive boost.
01:29Anyone else? So, Pinty, you'll be safe.
01:32Yeah, Philippe. Unfortunately, he had his scan and he needed a minor operation.
01:37Nothing too serious. Again, that's a matter of weeks, but we're going through the wars at the moment.
01:43And Rhys, we're going to look more after the international break.
01:47It's not serious, but there is something in his hamstring, and that's something that we'll monitor after the international week.
01:54Okay. Is that everyone, do you think?
01:58Touch wood.
01:59Okay. It's obviously been quite a difficult week.
02:03What has been maybe your most challenging as a manager, and also how damaging the kind of last week or
02:13so could be?
02:14Yeah, when you lose games, it's always a damage attached to it, but there's also me.
02:22I'm learning about the team, I'm learning about myself and my staff and the club, and I learned a lot
02:28this week.
02:28What I do know is that there's a resilience and a determination to put things right for myself and the
02:34team.
02:35And we'll see in the coming weeks what happens, which I'm very, very confident about.
02:39Have you been your most challenging?
02:41Different challenges.
02:43I think, you know, I think every manager goes through moments like this, goes through difficult weeks.
02:49I've had challenging periods before.
02:51At Strasbourg, we've lost games.
02:53I've lost games in many jobs, like all managers have done, but I've always found a way to come through
02:59that.
02:59And now we're at that point again, where I think as a group, we need to find a way to
03:03fight at Everton and come through a difficult period.
03:06I know you've been alerted to Enzo Fernandez, it's a great time at the press conference, and you said you
03:12haven't heard them, and you haven't spoken to him.
03:14Have you spoken to him now?
03:16Because they are pretty strong.
03:19Yeah.
03:19I think they're probably quite concerning for people that support your club, but you can't guarantee he's going to be
03:25here next season.
03:25Yeah, I think I had a great conversation with Enzo at length this morning before training, not just about his
03:31comments, just how he was feeling, how as a team we can improve.
03:33He's one of the captains of the club.
03:35What I would say is that he made it really, really clear to me how happy he is here at
03:40this club, how much he wants to win, how passionate he is for us to be successful.
03:44And he also said that in translation and in emotion, things get misconstrued in what he said.
03:50So for me, he's fully committed to this group.
03:53He's fully committed to win here at this football club.
03:55How much of that and how much of what you're trying to do at this club depends on qualifying for
04:00Champions League?
04:01Because we're talking about superstars and that's where they want to be playing next season.
04:06Hey, you want to be in the Champions League.
04:09It makes your recruitment, it makes your planning, makes everything clearer.
04:13You know, not just from a financial point of view, but we want to be, this club deserves to be
04:17in the Champions League.
04:19It's as simple as that.
04:20That's the aim.
04:22That's the target.
04:22That's what we need to really focus on now after coming out of that competition.
04:27And the rest of it is just about making sure that we win the next game and that we still
04:33stay on track for what we want to achieve.
04:36Thanks, Gail.
04:37John?
04:39How damaging has the last week been for the morale, the confidence and the belief of your players?
04:45It's been a few, pretty tough hasn't it?
04:47Yeah, but I think most clubs, most teams go through these moments in the season.
04:53I would say what I've seen, not just today, yesterday, after the game, during the game and in the last
05:01minutes when we're down to 10 men, I didn't see a lack of effort in a difficult moment.
05:05I've got a very resilient group.
05:07I've got a very resilient staff and we know we need to put things right.
05:11You can't quantify damage until you're at the end of the season.
05:15What we have, we have eight huge games left in the Premier League, plus a cup competition that we want
05:21to win.
05:22So we're still in a place where we can affect things in a positive way.
05:25Your team needs to be leaked for the last couple of games.
05:28Yeah.
05:28Is that a concern for you and will you have an investigation?
05:32We know.
05:33We know.
05:33Yeah, and it's not come from any place of malicious intent to me or to the team.
05:40We know where it's come from and we've dealt with the situation.
05:44Just another one, there's criticism of you having a note towards the end of the game.
05:50What have you made of that?
05:51I will always do my best in whatever circumstance for the team to perform at its best level, regardless of
05:58the result.
05:59Whether we're five goals down or five goals up, in that moment, we've just gone down to 10 men.
06:04I needed to change the system.
06:05I needed Moe Caicedo to go to right back.
06:08And rather than me scream and shout above a lot of people in the stadium, the best thing to do
06:13is to show him and get the note across to him.
06:15I'm aware, like, if I don't win at this football club as the manager and if we don't win as
06:20a team, I'm very aware now that anything and anything goes.
06:25You know, so.
06:25Does it surprise you that that is being scrutinised quite a bit yet?
06:29How do you deal with criticism?
06:32It doesn't affect me.
06:33It doesn't affect me.
06:34I'm aware of it.
06:35Of course, my job to be aware of what's being said about the football club, about my team.
06:40Am I surprised?
06:41No.
06:42The level, maybe.
06:43But the reality now is that I need to help this club and I need to help my players perform
06:48to win games of football.
06:49And if I don't, then maybe if I breathe wrong or sneeze wrong or it's going to be spoken about.
06:56Thanks, John.
06:56Keris?
06:57Hey, Liam.
06:58I just wanted to ask, like, with the image of you giving the note, people have construed it as you're
07:04trying to kind of get your ideas across, I guess.
07:06Do you feel that your tactics are getting through to the players at the moment?
07:09Is it a getting the message across thing or is it an execution thing where things are going wrong?
07:14Sorry, just the context of your question.
07:17I want to get the answer correct to your question.
07:19Are you talking about the fact I'm giving a note or are the, could you just rephrase that?
07:24Yeah, no, that's fair.
07:26People kind of, maybe Garnaccio's facial expression was a bit confused, like, how people have construed it.
07:33We're five goals down.
07:34The lads were disappointed.
07:36It's normal.
07:36There will always be a narrative when the team don't perform or get the result that they want.
07:42But that's not the case.
07:44The players have shown, I think we've had 18 games together in 10 weeks.
07:48They've shown at times that they have clear understanding of what we want to do in a different way.
07:52And at times, which is normal in this period, it's not going to go completely to plan.
07:56In terms of the game on Tuesday night, it completely didn't go the way we wanted it to.
08:02But me handing out a note is not a reflection of my message not getting through to the players.
08:07Sure, no, that's bad.
08:08Sorry for the question.
08:09No, no, no, it's okay.
08:10I tried to make sure I responded in the right manner.
08:12In terms of where the execution is going wrong, is that a case, do you think, of on Tuesday, for
08:19instance, like pressing, for example?
08:22Is that something where players need more kind of tactical attention to that?
08:25Or is it just an execution?
08:27No, I think if you look at the game and if you look at the reality of the situation, I
08:31would love to have a pre-season with the group.
08:33It's not possible.
08:34It doesn't mean we can't be successful.
08:36I'm so happy that I've joined this club in the moment that I did.
08:42If you look at our games where we've not achieved what we wanted to, it's not come off tactics, it's
08:47come off moments.
08:49It's come off moments.
08:50We're 2-2 in the first game, come off a mistake, an individual error.
08:54That happens in football.
08:55The first goal, which took all of the energy out of the stadium, had nothing to do with pressing.
09:00But then PSG, who are the European champions, are four goals up.
09:04There are other emotional factors to it.
09:07Again, me handing out a note, it doesn't tell a story.
09:11It tells a story.
09:11I want the team to always play at its best, no matter what the situation is for the group.
09:17Thanks, Keres.
09:18Rob?
09:19How's Mamadou start after Tuesday?
09:22Not just thinking about Prince State, but I think you feel the time that they've been taken off at a
09:27hard time.
09:28Still very early in his Chelsea career.
09:30It's a lot.
09:31It's a lot.
09:32And it's a lot for all of us at this club because we are expected to achieve in the now.
09:39Mamadou will be, he is, I've worked with him for nearly two years.
09:44I'm so excited for his career.
09:45That's why he's here.
09:47And you have to go through negative experiences at times to improve.
09:51And he'll come back.
09:52He trained very well today.
09:53He's completely a massive part of our plans moving forward.
09:57And this, in the long run, for the pain that he's gone through, will make him an even better player.
10:01Is it always more of a risk for a young, inexperienced defender than it is if you're bringing those players
10:07in and that part of the pitch?
10:09I think, you know, the closer you are to your goal, if you're a goalkeeper and you make a mistake,
10:14the chances are it ends in a goal.
10:15The goal is the same for defenders, it's higher.
10:18But Mamadou, Jarrell was magnificent.
10:21Jarrell's been top since I've been at the club.
10:23And you want to give these players the opportunities to show what they can do and learn from mistakes, me
10:28included.
10:28We all make mistakes.
10:29You have to make sure you learn from them.
10:31And that's where Mamadou is in his career.
10:33And if he learns from his mistakes, he's going to be, honestly, it's just so exciting what he can become
10:39as a player.
10:40Okay.
10:41We'll end that section there.
10:45These cameras off, please.
10:46We'll end that section there.
10:46We'll end that section there.
10:46We'll end that section there.
10:47We'll end that section there.
