00:01I'm sick and tired of living this way
00:05Over and over I play and I pray
00:11A young mum in trauma
00:14She rang me, she just said to me
00:16I've lost my child, social service, they've just come round
00:19Evie Adams has done nothing wrong
00:21But what about the new man in her life?
00:24No one is coming to rescue me
00:29I didn't know who he was
00:32And if I ask people about him
00:35He's a bad'un, he's a bad'un
00:38And that's all we got
00:39Two troubled lovers sharing a timeline of torment
00:44And then one goes quiet
00:45What has happened to Evie Adams?
00:49It all just kind of changed
00:50But then it was too late for her
00:52She was already in love with him
00:54I'm sick and tired of living this way
00:58Over and over I play and I pray
01:19At just three years old
01:21Evie Adams quickly formed a deep bond with her foster family
01:25Who welcomed her into their home with open arms
01:29When she came to us at first she was very shy
01:33And within a week she was, she changed
01:36She was starting coming out of herself
01:39Bit of a daredevil, Dippy
01:41She was singing all the time
01:44She was, she was a brilliant child
01:46She absolutely loved Bernard and Yvonne
01:48Absolutely adored them so much
01:50She was like, they've saved me, they've saved me
01:53Like where would I be without them now?
01:57After three years together
01:58The family decides to make things permanent
02:02She absolutely loved it
02:03When we adopted her
02:05All she wanted to do was change her name to ours
02:08And we said, well, no
02:09It's a bit of a wrong time, yeah
02:12When you're old enough
02:13You can change it to ours
02:16Sure enough, on her 16th birthday
02:19She gets what she's always wanted
02:24When Yvonne changed her name
02:25She changed as a person
02:26And because she got her name
02:28It was the big, the big thing
02:30You know, going around telling everybody
02:31I'm not that person before
02:33You know, like with her own name
02:35It was brilliant
02:36I think the adoption and Bernard's family
02:39That secure base was successful
02:42Because, you know, she was able to go to college
02:43She was studying to become a hairdresser
02:46It's while studying that Yvonne meets Holly Drakeley
02:49Who soon becomes part of the family
02:51We instantly, like, had this proper good bond
02:54It was like the sister I'd never had
02:57Kind of situation
02:58She was just, like, an amazing girl
03:00Like, she was just adorable
03:03You just wanted to squeeze her face off
03:05Yvonne makes friends easily
03:07And her infectious personality
03:09Is a hit with the punters
03:11When she lands her first job at 15
03:14Before Yvonne left school
03:15We had a pub
03:17And she used to help out there
03:19She used to glass collect
03:20She'd do anything to help, really
03:22And life at home
03:23Was where Yvonne truly thrived
03:28She really loved being at home
03:29It meant everything to her
03:31She couldn't do enough for you
03:32She wanted to help
03:33You know, can I wash up?
03:34Can I help you cope?
03:36She just loved to be around
03:38People that she loved
03:40She liked to be there
03:42She had a heart of gold
03:43And she just absolutely loved being at home
03:46She enjoyed being around her friends and stuff
03:48Like, she absolutely loved her home life
03:52But it's not the home life Yvonne always had
03:55Yvonne's upbringing when she was a little girl
03:58Was abusive
03:59There was neglect
04:00There was a lot of serious abuse factors
04:03In her early years
04:05Yvonne was removed from her birth family
04:07When she was very young
04:09And then she was placed in foster care
04:11She had a rough time with her family
04:13Her family
04:14We're a bit of a notorious family
04:16For getting in trouble with the police
04:18And one thing or another
04:21Nobody taking care of her properly
04:23She was able to walk in streets
04:25At the middle of the night
04:26And that sort of thing
04:30She did tell me she was adopted
04:32And she did say she got abused as a child
04:34But she didn't tell me too much
04:37Like, she were reserved about it
04:40Yvonne knows her adopted family
04:42Transformed her life
04:43And now, at just 16
04:46She's already dreaming of building a home
04:49And a family of her own
04:50When she started going out with Nathan
04:53They came in, we invited him round
04:55Started coming round for his tea
04:57They go in the front room
04:59A really nice lad
05:01He was everything her family had hoped
05:04That she would meet
05:05And indeed, the relationship appeared happy
05:11Eventually, she moved out
05:12I weren't happy about that
05:13That they moved out
05:14They moved in together
05:16It was mostly good
05:17Some bad
05:18Like there is in every relationship
05:21But her and Nathan together
05:23Were, like, perfect for each other
05:25I was proud of her
05:26Because she was doing her own thing
05:28We helped her out
05:29They got their own home
05:30They were all making
05:32Say, everything was fine
05:33Fast forward a couple of years
05:35And the pair have some exciting news
05:38Evie would be
05:39Round about
05:4119 and a half, 20
05:42When she fell pregnant
05:45And she were, she were proud
05:47She were proud, really proud
05:49She were over the moon
05:51When she found out you were a girl
05:53She was just really happy to be pregnant
05:54And she glowed as well through it
05:56The family's excitement turns to anguish
05:59When tragedy strikes
06:01With the death of a close relative
06:03Just as Evie goes into labour
06:06At the time, it were joyful
06:10And sad
06:12It were, like, mixed emotions
06:13It were turned against each other all the time
06:16You know, how could God be so cruel
06:19One in and one out on the same day?
06:23She were upset
06:24You could tell in her voice
06:25That she just wasn't happy
06:26We weren't there for Evie at the time
06:28You know, it was like postnatal depression
06:31So we weren't actually there at the time
06:36When she needed us most
06:38She were on her own all day
06:40With the child
06:41And he'd come right home from work
06:43And go round to his mother
06:44He'd take the baby round
06:45And she'd be sat in on her own
06:48And it really
06:51Took her on the downward spiral
06:54Evie's relationship with her partner
06:56Is heading the same way
06:58They were arguing all the time
07:00And it just got a bit too toxic
07:02You can say
07:03So it was just better if they separated
07:05And parted ways
07:07Bernard and his family
07:08Gave her, you know, the money
07:10And the support to set up on her own somewhere
07:13Evie, the adopted child
07:15Doesn't want to be on her own
07:18She was scared of quite a lot of things at the time
07:20She didn't know how she was
07:21She was going to do it alone
07:23She was worried about money
07:25Just the usual stuff
07:27When you part ways with someone
07:29She was just worrying
07:30That she was going to be on her own
07:31All the time
07:33We moved her in the new house
07:35Nathan was still going round
07:36She seemed all right
07:39And then people started telling us
07:42That there was somebody else there
07:44Jordan Monaghan, age 28
07:47He's already a father of two
07:50She did tell me
07:51She was going on a date
07:52With someone off Tinder called Jordan
07:53So I was like, right, okay
07:55I was like, just keep your wits about
07:57You know, you're a young girl
07:58Like, you're in a bit of a vulnerable position
07:59Just be careful
08:02And then she'd come off the date
08:03She rang me up and she was like
08:05It seems really lovely
08:06I was like, right, okay
08:08Then I was like, just take it slow
08:12Quite quickly there were rumours
08:13That Jordan Monaghan was at
08:15That new house
08:16Quite a lot
08:17By this point
08:18He'd already got a reputation
08:20People were talking about him
08:22He had pockets full of money
08:23Wads of money
08:26He's standing in the middle of the pub
08:27Counting them
08:29I was also saying
08:29Look at what I've got
08:30Type of thing
08:33He had a number of businesses
08:35And his brother had a construction building business
08:38They were doing paving and driveways
08:41And stuff like that
08:42But it never made sense to me
08:44To have that amount of money
08:46Every day
08:48Doesn't come from construction
08:51He was charming
08:52And he were happy to spend
08:54Whatever it takes to make her happy
08:56He'd do anything
08:58To make her happy
08:59So I couldn't understand
09:01Why she didn't want to know
09:04But some had heard otherwise about Jordan
09:07A not so charming side
09:11I didn't know who he was
09:13And if he asked people about him
09:16He's a bad one
09:17He's a bad one
09:18And that's all we got
09:22There was just something about him
09:23That were off
09:25It just clicked to me
09:26I was like
09:26There's something not right with him
09:28And I did try and explain it to Evie
09:30But she was like
09:31Smitten
09:32She won't listen
09:32She didn't want to know
09:34Evie may not know it
09:36But Jordan lives up to his reputation
09:39And it's the reason his ex-partner left him
09:42His partner uncovered a gambling addiction
09:45And challenged Jordan on the fact
09:47That he had run up considerable debt
09:48Because of the gambling
09:51There were times I'd seen him
09:52Put four or five hundred pounds in a bandit
09:55And there are further rumours circulating
09:58There were rumours going out
10:00About a lad who murdered his kids
10:03Of one of the locals of me
10:06The pub that I used to be in
10:09There was rumours that he murdered the kids
10:14He was under investigation
10:15Because both children died
10:17In suspicious circumstances
10:47Both children were found to have died
10:50My big worry was the grandchild
10:54If he's done that
10:55Like could he do it again
10:57As tensions rise
10:59And suspicions grow
11:00The questions loom large
11:03Is Evie in deeper danger
11:06Than she realises
11:07And what does this mean
11:09And what does this mean
11:09For those closest to her
11:18As Evie and Jordan grow closer
11:21She began to withdraw
11:22From those around her
11:24Her family start to notice
11:26The changes in her
11:27She's becoming secretive
11:29Distant
11:30And lies to them
11:32Now that might be because
11:33She's also trying to protect
11:36Monaghan
11:37And not allow him
11:39To be identified
11:40By her family
11:41As someone
11:42That they should be wary of
11:44The lies just come
11:46Longer and longer
11:48And it got to the stage
11:49I said look
11:50I don't believe a word
11:51You're telling me
11:51You're lying to me
11:52I said you've made me and your mum
11:55Pulled £1,200 out
11:56To buy you an house
11:57To be a love shag
12:00We like drifted apart
12:01She could only bring me
12:02If she went to her dad's
12:06Coercive controlling behaviour
12:08Is at the heart of domestic abuse
12:10And that's what we are seeing here
12:12And that controlling behaviour
12:14Is designed
12:14It's designed with a particular
12:16Purpose in mind
12:17And that's to make Evie
12:19Dependent on Monaghan
12:21And to isolate her
12:23From her family
12:24And from other sources
12:26Of advice
12:27And that sense of isolation
12:29Is going to be magnified
12:31Within the community
12:32Because Monaghan
12:34Is suspected
12:35Of having killed his children
12:37And therefore
12:38People won't want
12:39To be seen
12:40To be talking to Evie
12:42And especially
12:42Talking to Monaghan
13:01The police did come
13:02To warn Evie
13:03They chose to come
13:04And share information
13:05With her
13:05That her child
13:06Was at risk
13:07That she was at risk
13:10She doesn't for whatever reason
13:12Take heed of the warning
13:13The police are so concerned
13:16The police are so concerned
13:16They actually take her
13:16To a place of safety
13:17And saying
13:18You're not safe
13:19With this man
13:19A restraining order
13:21Is issued
13:21To keep Jordan
13:23Away from Evie
13:25Without evidence
13:27To charge him
13:27Monaghan
13:28Is released
13:29On bail
13:30As police
13:30Continue to investigate
13:32The deaths
13:33Of his children
13:34Despite police warnings
13:36Evie can't stay away
13:38From him
13:38Her friend Holly
13:40Is concerned
13:42We all went to Blackpool
13:44For a night out
13:45Me, Evie and Jordan
13:46We had a really good night
13:47But she couldn't dance
13:51And that's when
13:52It clicked in my head
13:53I thought
13:53This is not right
13:54Like she has to be
13:55By his side constantly
13:56And it wasn't right
13:59Even the bar staff
14:00At their local pub
14:01Noticed the unusual dynamic
14:03Between Evie and Jordan
14:06Evie and Jordan
14:07Rose stayed back
14:08In the booth
14:08And they were a bit more
14:09Like Evie
14:10Weren't allowed to do much
14:11They were like
14:12She always had to be
14:13Near him
14:13So she couldn't
14:15Go and enjoy herself
14:16With your friends
14:16If they went off
14:17Dancing and stuff
14:18It kind of like
14:19Went from this charming
14:21I'll do anything for you
14:23Kind of person
14:24To you'll do everything
14:25I tell you to do
14:26And you'll like it
14:28Like you could see
14:29His whole demeanour
14:30Changed about him
14:32He'd gone from
14:33Being so nice
14:34To always
14:35Always angry
14:35Always shouting at her
14:38It all just kind of changed
14:40But then it was
14:41Too late for her
14:42She was already
14:43In love with him
14:52Evie and Jordan
14:52Had been together
14:54For 12 months
14:55When police once again
14:56Attempt to help Evie
14:58There was a restraining order
14:59In place
15:00But he stopped
15:01Driving a car
15:02With Evie in the car
15:03When he's asked
15:04By the police officers
15:05He said
15:05Oh it's just some bird
15:06I met
15:08Even the use of the word
15:09Bird shows
15:09Complete lack of regard
15:11Of respect for Evie
15:12And a complete lack of regard
15:14And respect for the law
15:18Monaghan pleads guilty
15:19To the breach
15:19And receives a 12 week
15:21Suspended sentence
15:23That triggers
15:24Another intervention
15:25She rang me one day
15:27Saying social services
15:28Have just been around
15:29And I was like
15:30Oh right why
15:30She was like
15:31Because I'm with Jordan
15:32I said right okay
15:33I was like look
15:34I said just do what
15:35Social services
15:36Want you to do
15:37And she was like
15:37Right okay I will
15:38I was like
15:39And what exactly
15:40If they said
15:40I need to keep Jordan
15:42Away from my daughter
15:43So I was like
15:43Right okay then
15:45So I was like
15:45Just do that
15:46This advice
15:47Was echoed
15:49By Evie's adopted parents
15:50Why just not
15:52Move to another town
15:54Don't tell anybody
15:55Where you are
15:55We'll be in touch
15:57We'll come over
15:57Every day
15:59No
15:59No
16:01And then
16:02A couple of weeks later
16:04I got a phone call
16:05Quite late at night
16:06About 10 o'clock
16:07And she rang me
16:09She just said to me
16:11I've lost my child
16:13I said what
16:14She went
16:15I've lost my child
16:16Social services
16:17They've just come round
16:17And took her
16:18And I was like
16:19Why
16:20She went
16:20Because Jordan was here
16:24I turned round
16:25And told her
16:26The exact reason
16:28She got
16:29Took away
16:29From her parents
16:30For
16:31Was for what
16:32Was happening
16:33To her
16:34My heart broke
16:35A little bit for her
16:36Because I thought
16:36You didn't deserve this
16:38But you've made
16:40The wrong decisions
16:41Evie is allowed
16:42A supervised visit
16:44With her baby
16:44Twice a week
16:46She was heart broke
16:47I mean
16:49Don't get me wrong
16:50She would never
16:50Miss a contact
16:52She loved the
16:53Child to bits
16:54And she'd always
16:54Ring up
16:56Every day
16:56See how she were
16:57And how she was doing
16:59You can see why people
17:01Would find that
17:01Really confusing
17:02You know
17:03Why she wouldn't
17:03Just try and leave
17:04That relationship
17:05For me
17:06That raises questions
17:07About how controlling
17:08And powerful
17:09That relationship
17:09Actually is
17:11Why would she stay
17:12And maybe it's not
17:14About why would she stay
17:15Maybe it's about
17:16Why couldn't she leave
17:20She's actually
17:20Come to a white house
17:21And she bruises
17:22On her arm
17:22Said what's happened there
17:23Oh I fell
17:24I said how many times
17:25I was 10
17:27Yeah I've definitely
17:28Witnessed him
17:29Showering at her
17:30Yeah definitely
17:31And I've witnessed him
17:33Get aggressive
17:33With other people
17:34As well
17:35There are financial
17:36Pressures on the
17:37Relationship
17:38Causing tension
17:39For Evie
17:40Went out with me
17:41At one night
17:41And somebody
17:42Turned around
17:43And said to me
17:43That Jordan's been
17:44Sacked from his job
17:45I said well
17:45What's he been
17:45Sacked for
17:46He said because
17:46People's been
17:47Ringing up
17:48And telling the
17:49Company he worked
17:49For her
17:50That he's a murder
17:51He's killed his kids
17:54And it was for his own
17:55Safety
17:55They finished him
17:56Now that's when
17:57She started
17:59Saying she'd
18:00No money
18:01And he'd
18:02Shopping
18:04She weren't
18:05Paying her rent
18:07But she was
18:08On benefits
18:08So where was
18:10The money going
18:12It was just
18:13Unbelievable
18:13Evie is evicted
18:15Her life
18:16As she knows it
18:17Is falling apart
18:19She'd obviously
18:20Lost a baby
18:21She went from
18:22A stable home
18:22To living into
18:23Hostels
18:24And things like
18:25That
18:25Just trying
18:25To get by
18:27Before she
18:28Would join
18:28She was
18:29Happy-go-lucky
18:30Like going out
18:31But he stopped
18:32All that
18:33He cut
18:34All her friends
18:35Off
18:35They couldn't
18:36Have
18:37Couldn't have
18:38Anything to do
18:38With anybody
18:40She's lost
18:41Her child
18:41She's lost
18:42Her house
18:42She's living
18:43In a homeless
18:44Shelter
18:44Like
18:44What else
18:45Can she lose
18:57Evie wants
18:58To regain
18:59Custody
18:59Of her daughter
19:00And hopes
19:01To escape
19:02Jordan Monaghan
19:03She moves
19:05Into a women's
19:06Refuge
19:0650 miles
19:07Away
19:08In Kendall
19:08But Jordan
19:10Won't give her up
19:11Without a fight
19:13She tried to end it
19:14She rang me
19:16He's following me
19:17I said bring the police
19:19No I don't want to
19:20I don't want to
19:21Take it that far
19:22But he's following me
19:23Wherever I go
19:25I mean if she's not
19:26Safe in a refuge
19:26You wonder
19:28How can she ever be safe
19:30They were tracking
19:31A phone
19:31To find out
19:31Where she was
19:33Accusing her
19:33Of being with other men
19:37When that tactic fails
19:39Jordan goes to
19:40Extreme lengths
19:41Police went to see her
19:45He was on the rooftop
19:47Impressed and threatened
19:48To jump
19:48Because she wouldn't
19:50Have nothing to do
19:50With him
19:53She's positioned as
19:55The cause and the solution
19:56To his behaviour
19:58You know
19:58To his suicide attempt
19:59That she's the only one
20:01That can make him
20:01Feel better
20:02So you know
20:03Maybe that did
20:04Sort of pull them
20:05Back together
20:06Or draw Evie back
20:07Maybe she felt
20:08Responsible
20:09That she was supposed
20:09To be in that relationship
20:11Because if she isn't
20:12He's going to kill himself
20:14Jordan's tactic works
20:16I hadn't spoke to her
20:17For a couple of days
20:18And then I got a phone call
20:20Saying she was back
20:20In Blackburn
20:22I'm back with Jordan
20:26Evie is again
20:27Shut off
20:28From the outside world
20:29As Monaghan
20:31Controls her every move
20:33And you can imagine
20:34From her past
20:35He would use that as well
20:37To completely undermine
20:38Her self-esteem
20:39Her confidence
20:40You'd never be worth anything
20:42Because of what happened
20:42To you when you're younger
20:43You might as well be unique
20:44Because nobody else
20:45Will have you
20:47She went from her happy bubbly self
20:50To this shadow
20:52In about three months
20:55It went quick
20:56And it went fast
20:57That wasn't my best friend
20:59That was just some lost soul
21:01That had been beaten down so much
21:05That she just wasn't who she was
21:08It wasn't Evie anymore
21:16Still under Monaghan's influence
21:19Evie is heading to Blackpool
21:21For a short break with him
21:22And some friends
21:23But it's not the respite
21:26She might have hoped for
21:30So during the holiday
21:33During that break
21:33When they were together
21:34With the other couple
21:35Jordan had become aggressive
21:37He was argumentative
21:39He'd slammed doors
21:41He'd stormed off
21:42He'd punched a wall
21:43Their friends are deeply concerned
21:45Even more so
21:46When they witness an odd exchange
21:48Between Evie and Monaghan
21:50The other couple
21:52That they'd gone away with
21:53On their break
21:54Reported seeing Jordan
21:57Give Evie tablets
21:59Out of a brown glass bottle
22:01He told her they were painkillers
22:03And even the friends
22:04Thought it was a bit odd
22:05Because the glass bottle
22:06They were using
22:07And they went out to date
22:08A long time ago
22:13And it was
22:13The day after
22:15They got back
22:15From that short break
22:16That Evie said
22:18This relationship is over
22:19I'm done
22:28Evie Adams
22:28Begins searching
22:29For a new flat to live in
22:31Desperate to escape
22:33The toxic relationship
22:36Monaghan is making other plans
22:38Within a few days of Evie making it clear
22:42That this relationship is over
22:43Jordan is on a WhatsApp group
22:46UK tablets
22:47And he's looking to procure
22:49Zopiclone, diazepam and gabapentin
22:53A shopping list of drugs
22:55A shopping list of drugs usually prescribed for pain relief
22:58But if taken in large doses
23:00Can be extremely dangerous
23:02Those kind of drugs change people's behaviours
23:05Their resolve, their determination
23:06Their whole characters
23:07Within a couple of days
23:11Evie starts to feel very unwell
23:19Too unwell to leave the house
23:21Evie's search for a new flat
23:23Is put on hold
23:24So you've now got a more compliant Evie
23:28You've not got an Evie who wants to leave
23:29And that's exactly what Jordan was looking for
23:32He says
23:34I'm feeling really sick
23:36I've looked online
23:38And I've got stomach flu
23:40He said to me
23:41What gives you that idea?
23:42Well I've said
23:43I'll come down and take you to doctors
23:45Oh no, no, no, no
23:47Oh no, no
23:48I've made an appointment
23:49I've made an appointment
23:54Jordan Monaghan calls NHS 111
23:58Reporting Evie's symptoms
24:00As four days of vomiting and dizziness
24:03An appointment is made
24:04But he's not taking her to the doctor's appointments
24:07He receives return calls from the 111 service
24:12But they're ignored
24:13So Evie takes matters into her own hands
24:18There is a text message that Evie sends
24:20When she's very ill to her friend
24:22Saying Jordan keeps stressing
24:24He won't let me see a doctor
24:25Monaghan seems determined
24:28To keep Evie from recovering
24:34Monaghan calls 111 again
24:36This time reporting Evie
24:39As having abdominal pain
24:41Two return calls are ignored
24:44So we've got a man who is
24:46Denying her access for help
24:48And when it appears she's sharing that
24:51With a friend
24:51All of a sudden
24:52He's the Cairman boyfriend
24:53I'm on it
24:54I've got this
24:54111
24:55I'm all over it
24:56Don't worry
24:56I'm looking after it
24:59Evie's condition deteriorates
25:01You couldn't make
25:02End of the tale
25:03Of what she was saying
25:04She was
25:06You know
25:06Like she was drunk
25:08She's going to be presenting to people
25:10If she is coming into contact with them
25:11As maybe
25:12Oh she's a druggie
25:13Oh she's drunk
25:14So people are less likely to want to engage with her
25:18We can only really imagine how confusing and terrifying that must be
25:22The feeling that something is going horribly wrong and you don't know what it is
25:29And you're taking these tablets that your partner is telling you to take
25:33But you're getting worse and worse
25:36It must have been terrifying
25:38When Evie misses the chance to visit her daughter
25:42Bernard and his wife know it's serious
25:47She says
25:48Mum
25:49I can't get there on that hill
25:51The state that Evie would have been in
25:53Because of the amount of sedative drug that she's been given
25:57It's likely that she wouldn't have known what she was taking
26:00Or how many she'd taken that day
26:02For her to miss a visit
26:03It was just
26:05Nowhere
26:07She'd have walked from Kendall
26:09When she was up at Kendall
26:10She'd have walked from Kendall
26:11All the way to Blackburn to see her
26:15He doesn't want her to leave the house
26:17Even if she could
26:19A moment of relief
26:21When Bernard's wife hears from Evie
26:24She got a text message
26:25Put some stuff outside your door
26:28So my wife goes to the door
26:30There's like a wicker basket with bits of bats in colour and stuff
26:34I came home
26:35Looked on CCTV
26:37It was a girl that had brought stuff
26:39It wasn't her
26:40So obviously it weren't her texting saying that she'd come
26:46Coercive control is a pattern of behaviour
26:49That an abuser will use to establish dominance over the victim within their relationship
26:56And often one of the tactics that the abuser will use is to limit the amount of contacts that the
27:02victim has externally from the relationship
27:06Because if you can reduce the number of contacts
27:09Contacts family and friends that the victim would normally seek advice from
27:13Then that will mean the victim becomes more dependent upon the abuser
27:19So this is about domination
27:21This is about making the victim feel that they only can have a relationship with the person who is abusing
27:31them
27:32It's now been two months since Holly spoke to her friend.
27:36I tried to ring her one day and I got a message.
27:39I can't speak to you at the minute.
27:41I'll ring you when I get to my dad's.
27:43She said, OK, that phone call never came.
27:48Sorry.
27:50Yeah, that phone call never came.
27:53In the ten days since Evie first reported feeling ill,
27:58she's not seen a doctor.
28:00During this time, she has unknowingly taken a combination of prescription drugs
28:06given to her by Monaghan.
28:08The effects are shocking.
28:10Evie has sent this text message to Jordan saying,
28:14I feel like I'm dying.
28:15She doesn't know that the purpose of those drugs is to suppress her system.
28:21So her heart rate is probably going to be very low.
28:25Her breathing rate will have slowed down.
28:27It's causing a lot of damage.
28:29And so to say, you know, I feel like I'm dying,
28:32she probably did feel like she was dying because everything was shutting down.
28:41Whilst at work,
28:42Monaghan receives a text message seemingly from Evie.
28:46I've taken the drugs and I don't want to be here anymore
28:48and I don't want to help.
28:50His aunt goes round to the house to check on Evie
28:53and that's when they find Evie in a really dangerous situation medically
28:57and an ambulance is called.
29:01Jordan returns to the address.
29:04The paramedics are there, the police are there and he cries
29:09and he also claims to give over the blister packs of the medication
29:15that he thought Evie might be taking.
29:18They don't know it yet, but Monaghan has Evie's phone.
29:24Bernard and his wife have no idea the events which are unfolding across town.
29:30We're sat there watching telly about 10 past 10 at night.
29:35Police sergeant knocks on the door.
29:37Can I come in?
29:39My heart's up.
29:40Can I come in?
29:41I'll tell you.
29:42Evie Adams, yeah.
29:44Sadly, she's passed away.
29:45She's committed suicide.
29:53I was sat at work, I'd just finished a night shift, I was sat at work
29:57and I started laughing and I was like, she can't be dead.
30:00Like, she said she was going to ring me.
30:02Like, she'd never not ring me.
30:05I'm sorry.
30:07Her family and friends are struggling to understand
30:10what has happened to Evie.
30:12Why would she commit suicide?
30:14She wouldn't miss the child for anything.
30:19I mean, if it meant walking from London, she'd walk.
30:22She just would not miss that contact.
30:25She'd never leave a child, ever.
30:26She just wouldn't do that.
30:30I just knew something inside me,
30:32just knew that she wasn't to blame.
30:34He was.
30:35Monaghan is already suspected of killing his children
30:39by people in the community.
30:40And news of Evie's death quickly spreads online.
30:45The fallout immediately after the death on social media,
30:49it was big.
30:50It was big.
30:51Because this girl was in a relationship with someone
30:55and now she's dead.
30:57What's happened?
30:59Like, what's happened to her?
31:01Despite initial evidence suggesting suicide,
31:05after just 24 hours,
31:07the police have another theory.
31:09Force measures in the same turnaround
31:11and told her straights,
31:14they were 99% sure that it wasn't suicide.
31:22she'd been murdered.
31:26Monaghan is a key suspect,
31:29but the police have no evidence to charge him.
31:38As investigators try to piece together
31:41what has happened to Evie Adams,
31:43her suspected killer,
31:46Jordan Monaghan,
31:47is back to his old ways,
31:49drinking and gambling down at the local pub.
31:52He soon makes friends at the bar
31:54with Jake Marsden and Sue Dorries.
31:58The only story I knew for a long time
32:01was Evie wasn't so well
32:02and Evie took tablets
32:04and committed suicide purposely.
32:06I just started chatting to him.
32:08He told me a little bit about Evie.
32:10Told me that obviously she committed suicide.
32:12so to me it was just our bless.
32:15I'm really sorry,
32:16but I tried to make it a bit light for him
32:19because he seemed really sad.
32:28He went to a solicitor
32:30so she couldn't actually have a funeral
32:33for over a month
32:34because we were waiting for some decision
32:36on one thing and another.
32:39I know there was a lot of concerns
32:40because he threatened to turn up at the funeral
32:44and firebomb the place.
32:47We got her body
32:48and moved out of town
32:50because we expected him breaking in.
32:54You know, that's the type of person they were.
32:56Monaghan's playing the role
32:58of being a grieving partner.
33:01My partner Evie committed suicide.
33:04He's trying to elicit sympathy.
33:07He's trying to get the community on side.
33:10At the same time,
33:12it's another form of control.
33:14He's demonstrating the same level of control
33:16that he did when Evie was alive.
33:18This is just another manifestation
33:21of his need to have power
33:22to obliterate her personality.
33:25And I also get the sense
33:27this is a kind of verbal staging behaviour.
33:30He's trying to plant seeds in the community
33:33as to what happened to Evie
33:36that isn't true.
33:37He's trying to plant the seed
33:38that she took her own life
33:39whereas in fact,
33:41Monaghan killed her.
33:48Bernard is determined
33:50to keep Monaghan away from the funeral.
33:53But Monaghan himself
33:55has other ideas.
33:58Perhaps looking for an opportunity
34:00to plant evidence.
34:02Jordan asks a mutual friend
34:04to put a photograph
34:06in Evie's coffin.
34:08And so he invites the friend
34:10over to the house
34:11to get this photo.
34:12He picked something up
34:15and this suicide note
34:18dropped out of the picture from him.
34:21But it weren't even at the house.
34:23This was his parents' house.
34:25You know,
34:25it just doesn't make sense.
34:29Handwriting experts
34:30are drafted in
34:31to try and make sense
34:33of this new evidence.
34:35Evie's funeral goes ahead.
34:37There was police at gates going in,
34:40all different exits.
34:42And we were wet for the wake after.
34:44The police was outside there,
34:46back and front,
34:47all the time.
34:51It wasn't sad.
34:53It was happy.
34:54Everybody were there
34:55to celebrate Evie's life.
34:58Monaghan remains out on bail.
35:00He surrounds himself
35:02with people
35:02who are unaware
35:04of his secrets.
35:05He ended up being
35:06my, like,
35:07little drinking partner
35:08type thing,
35:09partner in crime.
35:09And, yeah,
35:10it was always fun
35:12and brought a good laugh.
35:15We had a little bit of a party
35:17at the pub
35:17for my birthday.
35:19And it was funny
35:20because there was
35:21a couple of girls,
35:23Polish girls come in,
35:25really nice girls,
35:26and they were talking
35:26to Jake and Jordan.
35:28And they were like,
35:28ooh, and Jordan's mom,
35:29I don't know what to do.
35:30He said,
35:31I've never been
35:32out with a girl
35:33since I went out with Evie.
35:34He said,
35:35I'm a bit nervous.
35:37In the wake of such a profound loss,
35:40the anger and frustration
35:42is impossible to ignore.
35:44He's taken my best friend's life
35:46and he's out on bail
35:47walking round
35:47and he could be talking
35:49to any other girls
35:50who are none the wiser
35:52about what's just happened
35:53in his life.
35:55So, yeah,
35:56I was really angry.
35:59He's moved on,
36:00got away with that,
36:01killed his two children,
36:03got away with that,
36:03killed Evie,
36:04got away with that.
36:05God, I'm good.
36:05I'm good at this.
36:06Yeah, this is my life.
36:08But what he doesn't know
36:10is that actually
36:11the toxicology
36:12in Evie's body
36:13is looked at
36:14and there's concerns
36:15about the level of drugs.
36:16The report stated
36:17that the opiate levels
36:18in Evie's blood
36:19were the equivalent
36:20of taking 20 Tramadol.
36:22Any more than two
36:23would make somebody unwell.
36:25Police now know
36:26what caused Evie's death
36:28but they still need
36:29to find proof
36:30of who caused it.
36:32It's been nine months
36:34since Evie was poisoned
36:36and Monaghan
36:37is moving on.
36:40He always had a big wallet
36:42full of cash
36:43and always seemed to,
36:45well, if he wanted something
36:46he could just pay for it.
36:48We were never like
36:49a little bit.
36:50It was always a big,
36:51big amount of money.
36:54But he was constantly
36:55with everybody.
36:56Do they need to lend
36:56some money?
36:58I was like,
37:00there's just something
37:01not right.
37:02There's something
37:02not sitting right.
37:05It started to get,
37:06seem more shady
37:07and shadier
37:08as the time went on.
37:10As Monaghan
37:11becomes more elusive,
37:13he's quick to offer
37:14an explanation
37:15to his friends.
37:17He'd go and see his solicitor
37:18and go missing
37:18for a few days.
37:19So that used to be
37:21on a Monday,
37:22Monday to a Thursday.
37:24Then he'd be back
37:25on a Friday
37:26and he'd be like,
37:27oh, we've been a week.
37:28I've been working.
37:31But then as it went on
37:32and went on,
37:33that's how it more
37:33come out,
37:34with seeing the solicitor
37:35or seeing the solicitor
37:36or seeing the solicitor
37:36for a few days
37:37for questioning
37:38and then you'd ask
37:39why you were,
37:40what you were being
37:40questioned for.
37:42That was suspicious.
37:46Lee's suspicions
37:47grow following
37:48an argument
37:49at the pub
37:50when a woman,
37:51a friend of Monaghan's
37:52ex-partner,
37:54mentions having heard
37:55about Evie's death.
37:57She recalled him
37:58a murderer.
37:58That was my first
37:59real proper inkling
38:01with everything
38:02into Evie
38:03and the other two children.
38:05She told him
38:06a murderer,
38:06she told him
38:07you've killed your kids,
38:08you've killed your ex,
38:09you've done this
38:10and you will get
38:10what's coming to you.
38:11And then you start
38:12thinking,
38:13well,
38:13these accusations
38:14have come out,
38:15so many of them,
38:17there's got to be
38:17some truth here.
38:20He didn't come across
38:21as dangerous
38:22to anybody,
38:23he didn't.
38:23He was just
38:24a young lad.
38:25He didn't pose
38:26any threat to nobody.
38:28You know,
38:29he just seemed
38:30happy,
38:31sometimes sad
38:32because obviously
38:33of what had happened
38:33to him,
38:34but the rest of the time
38:35he was just
38:36having a drink
38:36and having a laugh
38:37with everybody.
38:39But we were all
38:40dragged under
38:40an illusion.
38:45Sue is surprised
38:46to learn the truth
38:47about her friend
38:47Monaghan
38:48when she's visited
38:49by the police.
38:51They said to me
38:52then about children
38:53and they said,
38:54do not let him
38:55anywhere near children.
38:57He is not allowed
38:58in the vicinity
38:59of children.
39:00And I'm like,
39:01why?
39:02And the police
39:03asked me,
39:03what did I know
39:04about his children?
39:05I said,
39:05well,
39:06I knew that
39:06he'd passed away.
39:07I said,
39:07but it was like
39:08six years ago.
39:09I said,
39:10for a genetic,
39:12something genetic
39:13that they died of.
39:14The police
39:15are closing in.
39:17Detectors
39:18are then
39:18getting
39:19the best experts
39:20they can find
39:21and we talk
39:21about 12 experts
39:23from a wide range
39:24of disciplines
39:25to just look
39:26at not just
39:27Evie's death,
39:29but also the death
39:30of the two children.
39:31As part
39:32of the investigation,
39:33officers examined
39:35Jordan's phone,
39:36and accessed
39:38his WhatsApp messages
39:39and they uncovered
39:41clear evidence
39:42of him ordering
39:44and purchasing
39:45the drugs
39:46that were later
39:47found in Evie's body
39:49after her death.
39:50This evidence
39:52strongly indicates
39:54that Jordan
39:55was not only
39:56buying the drugs,
39:57but also administering
39:59them to Evie.
40:05Jordan is then
40:06re-arrested
40:07and he's charged
40:08with the murder
40:09of his two children
40:10and of Evie.
40:13In October 2021,
40:16Jordan Monaghan
40:17appears at
40:17Preston Crown Court.
40:19The friends
40:21who thought
40:21they knew him
40:22appear in court too.
40:24It made me sick
40:26that I'd been
40:27in association
40:28with somebody
40:29that could do
40:29something
40:30that evil
40:32and not flinch.
40:35Not flinch.
40:36You know
40:37when you look
40:37at someone
40:38and you can see
40:38that they're sorry?
40:40He didn't look
40:41like that in court.
40:42And he was sat
40:43at the back row,
40:44so he was sat
40:44at the very back.
40:46He was just slouched
40:47like he knew
40:48what was coming
40:49anywhere.
40:49He knew
40:50he was already
40:50going to stay
40:51in prison
40:52for the majority
40:53of his life.
40:53He knew
40:54he was going
40:54to get found guilty.
40:55He knew
40:56his time was up
40:57of the lies
40:58that he'd been telling.
41:00Felt like
41:01I'd been tricked
41:02for whoever
41:02this person was.
41:03It was just
41:04a big cover-up
41:05and a big fake
41:06and all these
41:07laughable times
41:08and memories
41:09I've had
41:09weren't even real.
41:10How can he
41:11stand there
41:12and be sad
41:15over Evie's death
41:17and when
41:18the anniversary
41:19of her birthday
41:20was,
41:20be sad
41:21and show us
41:22all pictures
41:22of how much
41:23he loved her
41:23and all the rest
41:24of it
41:25when apparently
41:26he did this
41:26to her.
41:29And leaving
41:30all us lot
41:31thinking
41:32everything was
41:32fine,
41:34that a man
41:35could do
41:35something like
41:35that,
41:36that's just,
41:37it's insane
41:38to me
41:39that somebody
41:40can do that.
41:42During the trial,
41:43a linguistics
41:44expert presents
41:45evidence on
41:46the suicide note.
41:47The particular
41:48thing they asked
41:48me about in court
41:49was a phone call
41:50that Jordan told
41:50me about.
41:51He said he'd
41:51had a number
41:52of phone calls
41:52when Evie died,
41:53the night Evie died,
41:55that he'd missed
41:56on his phone
41:56and he was
41:57working in a warehouse
41:58and then when
41:59he eventually
41:59answered,
42:00they told him
42:00that Evie had died.
42:02In my eyes,
42:03if someone
42:04ruined me
42:04and told me
42:05my girlfriend
42:05had died
42:06and you made
42:07out your love
42:07so dearly,
42:08he'd have
42:09dropped everything
42:09at work
42:10and gone
42:10straight home.
42:11He finished
42:11his shift
42:12and then went
42:12home.
42:12I thought,
42:13well,
42:13he's getting
42:14sent down.
42:15It's got this
42:16serious.
42:18Like I said,
42:19because nobody
42:20ever spoke about it
42:20for a long time,
42:21nobody knew
42:21how serious
42:22it was.
42:24Yeah,
42:24at that point,
42:25I thought,
42:25yeah,
42:25it's going down.
42:32Jordan Monaghan
42:33is found guilty
42:34of murdering
42:35his 21-month-old son,
42:38his one-month-old daughter
42:40and 23-year-old
42:41Evie Adams.
42:43I mean,
42:43people said
42:44bring back
42:44hanging.
42:46I don't want
42:47anything like that.
42:48I want him
42:49to be tortured
42:50every day in prison
42:50like he tortured her.
42:53I hate him,
42:54but I don't want
42:55him to die.
42:55I don't want him
42:56to take the coward's
42:57way out
42:57and commit suicide.
42:58I want him
42:59to pay for exactly
43:00what he's done
43:00to them babies
43:01and to Evie
43:03because if he
43:04takes the coward's
43:04way out
43:05and kills himself,
43:06then that's just
43:07what he wants
43:08to do.
43:08That's his choice
43:09and no,
43:10he shouldn't have
43:10a choice anymore.
43:12Evie didn't have
43:12a choice,
43:13so why does
43:14he get a choice?
43:18Jordan Monaghan
43:19is sentenced
43:20to life imprisonment
43:21with a minimum
43:23term of 40 years.
43:25There's no doubt
43:26this guy,
43:27had he not been
43:28arrested for the
43:29murder of Evie,
43:30would have gone on
43:31and perpetrated
43:32the exact same
43:33type of behaviours
43:34that Evie
43:35fell foul of.
43:36Definitely don't feel
43:37like I've got
43:38justice for Evie.
43:39Never will have,
43:40never will do.
43:42The word monster,
43:44I don't think
43:44that even touches
43:45the sides with this.
43:46He's much worse
43:48than that.
43:54Evie's family
43:55and friends
43:56are left to pick
43:57up the pieces,
43:59but the scars
44:00remain.
44:00I mean,
44:01it's an insight now,
44:02but we had a chance
44:03and I took her away.
44:06You know,
44:08gone away,
44:08you know,
44:09abroad or something
44:10for a few months
44:13just to get her
44:14away from him,
44:14but
44:16it's just one of them
44:17things, isn't it?
44:17You live and learn.
44:20I just wish
44:21I could have
44:21picked her up,
44:22throw her over
44:22my shoulder
44:22and took her away
44:23and just took her
44:24out of the situation
44:26because she just
44:27didn't deserve it
44:28at all.
44:30Jordan Monaghan
44:31completely took
44:32over her life
44:33and then ended it
44:34and tragically,
44:35despite the family's
44:36love,
44:37the best efforts,
44:38they couldn't have
44:39done anything
44:39to change that.
44:45Bernard and his
44:46family have created
44:48a memorial garden
44:49to celebrate
44:50Evie's memory,
44:52providing a special
44:53place for her
44:55daughter to enjoy.
44:57When it's warm,
44:58she'll sit there.
44:59She'll sit up
45:00in the sleeper.
45:02Hey, Mum,
45:03I'm doing this today
45:04and doing that.
45:06And say,
45:07Grandad,
45:08what, love?
45:10Her mum's just
45:11been watching me.
45:12You know,
45:12when a butterfly
45:13goes past,
45:14I'm like...
45:16She lives
45:17to her daughter now.
45:19She's doing amazing.
45:20She'll be so proud of her.
45:22Evie I remember
45:23is fun-loving,
45:24always dancing,
45:25always singing,
45:27get up and
45:28on karaoke
45:29in an empty room.
45:30You know,
45:31it's just funny.
45:34It's hard
45:35and she'll never
45:36be replaced, ever.
45:37I'll never forget her.
45:38She'll always
45:40be there somewhere.
45:41Always.
