00:02Great Moments in Videogame History!
00:07Since its initial launch back in 2004,
00:10many players have been able to conquer the dangerous dungeons and raids of World of Warcraft.
00:15These players made a name for themselves and their respective clans
00:18by defeating those who dare destroy peace and balance in Azeroth.
00:22But from all those heroes the players have created for this MMO
00:25with their buffs, legendary armors, and weapons,
00:28there's one that stands above all, one that brings chaos to the battlefield!
00:42In 2005, when the internet was just starting to bloom,
00:45and even before YouTube was an important thing,
00:47a clan raiding the Upper Black Rock Spires named Pals for Life
00:51carefully planned their assault to one of the most difficult rooms, the Rookery.
00:55Well, what we'll do, I'll run in first, gather up all the eggs,
01:01so we can kind of just, you know, blast and dull down with AOE.
01:03While calculating the possible outcome and their survival rate
01:06compared to previous failed attempts being 32.333 percent, repeating, of course,
01:10one of the team members sat quietly and away from his keyboard,
01:14completely ignoring his team's plan for glory.
01:17We can, of course, get them down fast because we're bringing all these guys.
01:20I mean, we'll be in trouble if we don't take them down quick.
01:23But as the clan was about to complete the final preparations for the plan,
01:27the unthinkable happens.
01:29Oh, that's a lot better than we usually do.
01:31All right, thumbs up.
01:32Ready, guys?
01:33Let's do this.
02:00With Leroy's unprovoked storming into battle,
02:03the raid's plan was utterly destroyed.
02:05But from all this chaos and bad pulling,
02:08it gave birth to the most amazing, free, positive PR explosion
02:12a gaming company could ever ask for.
02:15The video was uploaded and quickly spread around the World of Warcraft community
02:18and the entertainment media was massive.
02:21The news about this Leroy Jenkins began to be covered by several outlets in the gaming world.
02:25As part of the internet, Leroy Jenkins became an early meme
02:28used most of the time as a verb describing recklessness
02:31or bad pulling in a game of WoW,
02:33or any game for that matter.
02:34The meme became so recognizable that anything related to the event
02:37or Leroy himself was used by the mainstream media
02:40as a pop culture reference.
02:42Listen, did he just run in?
02:44Did he just run in?
02:46Leroy was even on Jeopardy.
02:48This role-playing game out in 2004
02:51returns to the world of Azeroth
02:53where heroes like Leroy Jenkins do battle.
02:59And that would be the world of Warcraft.
03:01Idiots!
03:02So stupid!
03:03Due to the massive viral spread
03:05and millions of views to the original video,
03:08the popularity of WoW grew exponentially.
03:10Blizzard acknowledged the success and recognition
03:12the character had gained with the gaming community
03:14and decided to make Leroy Jenkins canon
03:17and added him as a non-playable character to the game.
03:20He may have screwed over his pals,
03:21but Leroy, at least,
03:22you can now rest and eat your chicken
03:25because you're a damn celebrity.
03:28Leroy, you are just stupid as hell.
03:30At least I have chicken.
