Rwanda, DRC agree to "ease tensions" after talks in Washington

The Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda agreed during talks in Washington to take "concrete steps" to ease tensions and advance a peace accord struck last year, a joint statement said.

00:08and advance a peace plan agreed upon last year.
00:12The announcement comes after a meeting between representatives from both countries in Washington earlier this week.
00:20It follows months of non-stop hostilities in eastern Congo,
00:24where the Rwandan-backed M-23 militia is fighting Congolese armed forces for control of territory.
00:32The U.S. also negotiated last year's peace accord between the two countries.
00:37U.S. President Donald Trump has made it one of his goals to bring about peace deals in several ongoing
00:43conflicts.
00:45The peace deal struck last year has, however, not been respected by the belligerents in eastern Congo,
00:50as fighting for control of the mineral-rich territory has continued.
00:57The conflict has killed thousands and displaced large parts of the population in the region,
01:02with some seeking refuge in neighboring countries.
