00:00Rated M for Mature
00:17We're at the scoring stage in Los Angeles
00:20and we are recording the orchestra for Gears 4
00:24Being here is a pretty special thing
00:26because it's a culmination of
00:28about a year of work
00:30with our composer Ramin Djawadi
00:31There's very few franchises that have the range of emotion
00:34that you have in a Gears game
00:36To get all of that out of the game
00:37you need to have somebody who can deliver that musically
00:39When we looked for a composer who could bring that to us
00:42Ramin was an obvious choice
00:43I mean, you look at what his body of work
00:45The First Iron Man, Pacific Rim, and Game of Thrones
00:48I mean, these are all sort of larger-than-life scores
00:50and I'm excited that he's doing it now for us
00:52We have an all-star cast of people working on Gears of War 4
00:56Our conductor, Nick Glenny-Smith
00:58Stephen Coleman, our orchestrator
01:00He's one of the top orchestrators in the world
01:02and our orchestra, the players, have played on 2,000 and 3,000 movies
01:06By far, the best of the best
01:12Something that's really important to us in Gears of War
01:14was this notion of having a theme
01:16that resonates with the player and it kind of drives the emotion
01:21Gears 4 is definitely action-driven
01:23What really appealed to me, too, is that there is an underlying emotional through-line
01:26in the game that I really like
01:28Dad, we need your help
01:30I'm all done helping you
01:31We left that in his capable hands
01:33and he came back and started listening to the tracks
01:35And sure enough, there was this four-note theme
01:44That became the sort of sound that sort of resonated through all the tracks
01:50The fun part we had with some of the different themes
01:52was for the cock, we went for a little bit more of an electronic sound
01:55embedded with the orchestra
02:02Whereas for the swarm
02:05Definitely, we went darker
02:09It was a nice contrast between the two
02:11Okay, you're a big fella
02:17When you're playing the game, how you feel about the situation
02:20and what's driving sort of almost subconsciously your emotions
02:22is that big score behind it
02:25Let's say in an action chase, fast-driven percussion, for example, can really enhance that
02:29You create what's called the motor
02:31where the musicians are doing a rhythmic element underneath it
02:34This is an exciting way to create movement, especially for gameplay
02:48Good morning, all
02:49We'd like to start with...
02:51Oh, my God
02:52Zero MG, please
02:57Here in Gears 4, played live for the first time
03:00It literally gave me goosebumps
03:03It really elevates the music
03:09It adds so much depth to a grand game like Gears 4
03:12I think it's absolutely amazing
03:18Everything that you hear in the score is really coming from Ramin
03:21And he really helped bring this digital image to life
03:25And so that first time where you're listening to it with your eyes closed
03:28then you open your eyes and you have a smile on your face
03:30because you know that this is it
03:31And so that's the look of prophets
03:34And that's the most interesting thing
03:47You can listen straight, I don't know
03:49You know that they're being in line
03:50And you know that they're undientôtting
03:50But that thing is
03:51You can see the mountains
