00:08court on Thursday after pleading guilty to insulting Islam by desecrating a Quran.
00:15Magistrate Dr. Teoh Shoo Yee imposed the sentence on Amir Abdul Malik after taking
00:20into account religious sensitivities as the offence was committed during the holy month
00:25of Ramadan. The charge states the accused uploaded a video of himself stepping on the
00:31Quran with the intention of insulting Islam on February 28 in a house in Kampung Durian
00:37Daun, Masjid Tanah here. The court said the act was serious as it touched on the sensitivities
00:42of Muslims, adding that insults against any religion, whether Islam or otherwise, have
00:48the potential to cause harm far greater than physical injury. The court ordered for the
00:54nine-month jail term to take effect from the date of the accused's arrest on March 15.
