04:12We didn't cut them, we kept them, and they're really cool, I love them a lot.
04:16And then Forerunner Pieces.
04:17You can build a lot of Forerunner stuff through kit bashing,
04:19but these are legit Forerunner pieces and they look really good.
04:23Some of them are animated, that one moves around.
04:25Or they're just like these giant, awesome accent pieces
04:28for making your levels look like a legit Forerunner level.
04:33So we brought the grid back a few updates ago,
04:36but it was actually built to classic scale
04:38and it didn't work with modern maps.
04:39So that was something that we kind of actually changed
04:41and built a modern scaled version of the grid, which was kind of fun.
04:46This is a new thing that we have.
04:48We built new materials for this update.
04:50So there's two new material overlays.
04:52This is the new emissive material that we have
04:54and it literally just glows and lights up rooms.
04:56There's more control parameters, so you can actually control how much it glows,
04:59which is really cool.
05:00It'll allow for some really neat lighting techniques.
05:03These were something that were built internally as of a hackathon.
05:06We call them pyramoids.
05:07They're just kind of a weird little pyramid angle piece that you can build stuff out of.
05:11They're just kind of fun.
05:14So we also adjusted the material overlay so you can control them a little bit better.
05:18So you can make your grime a little bit lighter,
05:20make it a little more medium, make it really heavy.
05:22It just gives a lot more variety to your levels.
05:25And then the other one we really liked is this is shellac.
05:28So we made it look like you just, you know, put a lot of layer,
05:31large layers of polyurethane over your objects.
05:33And it gives them that really smooth kind of clean look and kind of futurey,
05:37which is kind of cool.
05:37Or it makes these bricks look flat, which is kind of fun too.
05:41This is something that the community has been really asking for too,
05:44is the destructural pieces from the campaign.
05:46So we brought a lot of those in as well as like kind of the more organic ones,
05:51the walls, the kind of Senhele style ones.
05:53There's just a lot of pieces for destruction, which is great.
05:57We made the flag as a separate object so that they can script around it.
06:00Again, like mini game focus, we wanted to give them as many tools
06:03for building like their own game modes.
06:05That was kind of our big focus.
06:06And then there's some classic weapons that are going in here,
06:08the grenade launcher, which is going to be a big favorite.
06:11and then the sentinel beam, which is really cool.
06:14And then there's the ball, which we also put in here as well.
06:16So you can tinker with that.
06:18Boundaries on things can be visible now.
06:20You can make a boundary visible.
06:21So it's always there even when you're a Spartan.
06:23And then this one, we scripted it so that when you walk in,
06:26it turns on the underwater effect and we spawned in some fish.
06:29Nice.
06:29So you can kind of see like, you know, just, you can do all kinds of stuff.
06:32And then you walk out, boop, that goes right back away.
06:34So it's all just like, the scripting is super powerful
06:36and we'll get into that in a little while.
06:38And then these are scriptable targets.
06:40So these are just kind of generic targets.
06:42You don't see them, but like if I shot it, it would go away.
06:45But that way you can trigger an event off of it, like something getting shot.
06:48And then ever importantly, a lot of new alien foliage.
06:52It also looks nice in the underwater, which is good too.
06:55So it kind of just add a lot of versatility and like, these are really cool plants
06:58and the community really, really, really loves their plants.
07:00So we're giving them lots of plants.
07:02So this, yeah, just to give a quick look, here's beautiful, like moody, dramatic underwater canvas.
07:07And it's all flat.
07:08It's a build off of it.
07:08It uses the same terrain pieces that you'd use from the title map as well.
07:12It's two awesome looking canvases, but what I keep hearing the most about scripting and minigames.
07:17So what are we looking at right now?
07:18So we're looking at a community map we called Freight that we pulled in
07:21because we wanted to build King of the Hill.
07:23That was one of the kind of benchmark modes that we needed to build.
07:26It's a lot of foundational pieces there.
07:27So we pulled this map in, added a lot of extra pieces to it, did some extra scripting, put King
07:32of the Hill.
07:33This is a version we call Diminishing King on here, where you actually, it starts with all the hills
07:37and it reduces them as you play until you're fighting at one kind of central location.
07:41It gets pretty dramatic and epic.
07:43But it was really cool.
07:44He had really cool scripted cargo containers.
07:45And so we enhanced the scripting a little bit on those with the new toys.
07:49And then we're showing off, this is our new physics piece.
07:51We have these physics hinges and joints.
07:53So I made these cargo containers over the water and there's this epic play that happened in there
07:57where he grabbed the power up, but it literally will swing by itself.
08:01And the design, the users can actually build these themselves really pretty easily
08:05once you kind of understand how they work.
08:06You'll see all the little nav points.
08:08So we have ways of generating nav points.
08:09You can change colors of things, assign them to different teams,
08:12put different labels on the nav points and kind of basically really rebuild your own modes.
08:16That was our goal.
08:17We want people to build their own modes until their heart's content really.
08:22And then it's all hooked up on like dynamic scripting things.
08:24So this cargo container can move up and down, which is really cool.
08:28And then just a lot of little details.
08:29Like even I got really obsessed one day where there's a Timmy the Whale in the water here.
08:34And if he'll do it every so and so, he blinks his eyes just kind of randomly
08:38just because it was fun.
08:40And then what we tried to do with a lot of the scripting, so with the King of the Hill,
08:43we wanted to kind of set some standards for how to build these things.
08:48And so like these are all the script brains that control the mode.
08:51And they're pretty simple.
08:52Like we're actually going to release our design documentation on how these work
08:55so they can learn from them and then kind of modify them, make them better,
08:59do whatever they want with them.
09:00So it's kind of an interesting little experiment that how compact could we make these?
09:04And then how versatile could they be?
09:06These like handful of script brains can actually make like 10 different versions of this mode
09:10from all the hills to one hill at a time to rotating hills.
09:13So it's kind of neat to see all the different variety of things that you could do with them.
09:16I know a lot of fans are going to be super excited to have the return of King of the
09:19Hill
09:19and then some, right?
09:20Because who's to see what variations come of that?
09:23We even have another variation we're going to ship with it.
09:25And there's another sort of fan favorite we could also say is back now, right?
09:28Well, I mean, we started with this joke of like, you know,
09:31we can give them race but not give them race.
09:33And so like, let's let them build race.
09:35And so we started with giving them the tools to build race.
09:38And that was our kind of our golden path to making minigame work was King of the Hill and race
09:43were our tent poles for everything.
09:44We knew we couldn't, we didn't have time for the arena team to build a full functioning race mode.
09:48And so we kind of had been pitching this idea of minigame and it kind of grew and snowballed into
09:54like,
09:54well, actually we started borrowing the arena guys.
09:56Like we couldn't have done some of this without actually everybody kind of pitching in.
09:59And the arena guys gave us some dev resources so we could actually build the mode itself.
10:04Or like they helped fix bugs or fix welding issues that we had or write script functions that we needed.
10:09And so we really focused hard on building race.
10:12And what's cool is again, much like the King of the Hill, it's super versatile and it's pretty easy to
10:16drop into a level.
10:17And then from there, like, you know, customize it to your level.
10:20And then what we keep expecting is that people are going to take it and make their own like customized
10:24versions of race.
10:25Make it really personal, make your thing kind of stand out and special.
10:29So it's definitely was the gold bar and it was a lot of work to get it working.
10:34But we're really proud of it and it's been really fun.
10:36We have two maps that we're going to try to ship with this that we're really excited about.
10:39Well, I know you're going to make a lot of fans happy when they can finally play some race again
10:43in Action Sack.
10:44And of course, make their own infinite variations of race and ramps and all sorts of cool stuff.
10:48So I cannot wait to play that.
10:50But I think your favorite game, if I'm not mistaken, and what seems to be a studio favorite is something
10:55totally new that no one even knows that they want yet.
10:57Yeah, we so when we did the summer update, we had we added the golf pack kind of and all
11:02that stuff, those classic pieces.
11:04But as we did it, we're like, we really want to make a game mode out of this.
11:06And we started working on minigame.
11:07So we came up with the idea of battle golf and like wrote it up on a board in front
11:10of us.
11:11And really, a lot of the early testing and foundations for minigame were built in battle golf.
11:15And people swear when they play this game, so it's often a good sign that it's fun.
11:20And there's a lot of screaming when it goes on.
11:22So I'm really excited to see what the public does with this.
11:24There's two teams, four players.
11:25Each team is trying to fight and get their golf ball to the hole while they're beating each other with
11:30golf clubs.
11:31And it changes every round.
11:32It has like little almost putt-putt kind of qualities where it turns into tubes and there's landmines in different
11:37phases.
11:38It's just, I don't know, it's really fun and it's one of my favorite things that we've come out with
11:42this whole thing.
11:43And yeah, we're really hoping that the community latches onto this.
11:46Because we really want a whole like hopper of like 18 courses, you know, so we can play battle golf
11:51to no end.
11:52Well, I've just barely played golf a little bit.
11:54I cannot wait to play more.
11:55It looks like a pretty wild time.
11:57It's fun.
11:57So I'm curious to see again what the fans, they may even take golf and push it further than you've
12:01even imagined.
12:01We hope so.
12:02We want a whole, we want hoppers full of battle golf.
12:04That would be a good thing.
12:05Yeah, it would be good.
12:06So of course, not only can you build new stuff and find new ways to play, but it's going to
12:10be easier than ever to find people to play with, right?
12:12With the introduction of what's essentially a custom game browser?
12:15Yeah, there's a custom game browser that was added.
12:18It was a really helpful thing that we didn't even plan on before, but we brought it as towards the
12:22end.
12:22It was a couple people got really excited about it because really we wanted to help the PC community kind
12:26of start to work together and get to play more than they could right now.
12:30And so this is a great way for them to find a game.
12:33And there's, you can either find a map that you really like and then join, like find a game from
12:37there or a game mode that you like through the file browser.
12:39Or you can actually go through just like, let's find a game.
12:41Like what's popular?
12:42What are people playing and actually join into a game from there?
12:44So it's a really powerful tool to like connect the community together to play the game and all these kind
12:50of, you know, crazy modes that people are going to build with this stuff.
12:52Totally. And it actually kind of connects the dots if you think about the Windows 10 PC experience for Halo
12:575, which is totally free by the way.
12:58Yeah.
12:59Not only do you have the Forge toolset, but now that you can find people to play with, you essentially
13:03have the entire sort of Halo Arena and Forge multiplayer suite fully playable for free on Windows 10.
13:09Yeah. And it's huge. And it's like, it was kind of this perfect storm of all these things kind of
13:12lining up, like getting the arena guys to help us out, the mini game, the mode pieces, all these things
13:18just kind of landed nicely at the same time.
13:20And so I think we have this great time. We have, you know, probably the one of the best Halo
13:23experiences available to you to play for free and or on your console as well.
13:27Awesome. Well, Tom, appreciate you walking us through this again.
13:31I wish we had hours because I know the fans cannot get enough of this, but something tells me we're
13:35going to be hearing a lot more from you in the weeks to come.
13:38Before we go, just any tips or advice you'd like to impart on our hardworking Forgers before they sink their
13:44teeth into this update?
13:44Yeah. I mean, I think the thing I would recommend to them is to like think about it, like think
13:48about the design and actually kind of work out your design and think about all your logic, experiment with things.
13:53But actually then when you want to build your game modes, actually like write it out and then actually kind
13:57of plot it and build it.
13:58It helped save me a lot of headache and hassle. So we're going to release those design docs so that
14:04you guys can see how we learned how to build things.
14:06Awesome. And then iterate, iterate, iterate, of course, and then using these new tools, you can find people to come
14:11in and play test, play test, play test.
14:13And that's going to help make it easier for us here at 343 to take something and get it into
14:18matchmaking a lot faster.
14:19Absolutely. Cool. Well, thanks very much. We hope to see all of you in Halo 5, whether it's on Windows
14:2410 or Xbox One, when the Monitor's Bounty update launches on December 8th.
