00:00:01O'er the power of Jesus' name, an angel's cross came forth, bring forth the royal diadem to crown him,
00:00:16crown him, crown him, crown him, Lord of all.
00:00:26In the tools I can never care, the one bold and the gold, just spread your soul peace at his
00:00:40feet, and crown him, crown him, crown him, crown him, Lord of all.
00:00:57Fantastic show.
00:00:58Very good.
00:01:01I've read that one before.
00:01:02It's surprising.
00:01:03Yes, I have actually.
00:01:06Fantastic show.
00:01:10Very good.
00:01:12I've read that one before.
00:01:13Yeah.
00:01:14It's surprising.
00:01:18Oh, that with yonder sacred throne, we at his feet may fall.
00:01:26Join him in the everlasting song, and crown him, crown him, crown him, Lord of all.
00:01:52Let us pray.
00:01:55O Lord and heavenly Father, giver of all good things, we thank you for the fellowship of this, our church,
00:02:03for the gift of communal worship, for neighbors and for friends.
00:02:34We thank thee, heavenly Father, for the warmth and comfort of you.
00:02:38For the comfort of our homes, for the love of our families.
00:02:43No husband, God, no children, never born, no grandchildren, sisters and brothers, yes, but never caring.
00:02:55Please help us.
00:02:55Enemies, many.
00:02:57Friends, a few.
00:03:00Comfort me, God.
00:03:02I'm lonely.
00:03:04For peace, universal prosperity and justice.
00:03:08I wish I was kneeling.
00:03:10I always feel I want to kneel.
00:03:11Chelsea two leads one.
00:03:14Mind wandering again.
00:03:15Why is it I wonder my mind wanders?
00:03:18Okay, I could suppose this sort of prayer.
00:03:20Eyes together, hands closed.
00:03:24Peace, universal justice.
00:03:27And Wendy.
00:03:29Thank God for Wendy.
00:03:31Something's wrong with that oven.
00:03:33It always undercooks.
00:03:35It's him twisting the knobs the wrong way.
00:03:37Loosen them.
00:03:38Not accurate anymore.
00:03:40Must remember to put the lamb in early.
00:03:42Give it time.
00:03:45Lamb.
00:03:46Me dad.
00:03:48Where's the sauce, Nora?
00:03:51Dad.
00:03:52He must be somewhere.
00:03:55Such sparkle.
00:03:57Can't just die.
00:04:01We thank thee for charity.
00:04:04For the gift of hospitality.
00:04:08For the clasp of a stranger's hand.
00:04:11A baby of my own.
00:04:13A baby.
00:04:14Please God.
00:04:16A baby.
00:04:17But most of all, O God.
00:04:20We thank thee for the greatest gift.
00:04:23The gift of love.
00:04:25Which alone, as thy son Jesus Christ has taught us.
00:04:29Is the foundation of true happiness.
00:04:32For his name's sake.
00:04:34Amen.
00:04:35Amen.
00:04:38Amen.
00:04:38Now let's sing together the Lord's Prayer.
00:04:49Now let's sing together the Lord's Prayer.
00:04:55Lord.
00:04:57Let's sing together the Lord's Prayer.
00:05:00Today.
00:05:03Now let's sing together the Lord's Prayer.
00:05:13Hey, Father.
00:05:14Tonight's Prayer,oooo noisy.
00:05:27Oh, how I love the Savior's name, Oh, how I love the Savior's name, Oh, how I love the Savior's
00:05:40name, The sweetest name of all.
00:05:44It takes the wounded spirit home, And comes a troubled friend, His man unto the hungry soul, And to the
00:06:01weary rest.
00:06:03Oh, how I love the Savior's name, Oh, how I love the Savior's name, The sweetest name of all.
00:06:24Oh, how I love the Savior's name, Oh, how I love the Savior's name,
00:06:50I love the Savior's name, The sweetest name of all.
00:07:00On Tuesday of this week, the Women's Social Hour, And by popular request, Mrs. Atkinson will be showing slides of
00:07:07her recent visit...
00:07:08Poor, pitiful Mrs. Atkinson, Showing her slides again, Guaranteed to snatch your soul from the brink of despair, And drown
00:07:17it in a morass of mindlessness.
00:07:19Why do they fill this place, These furies of acacia groves, In the clochettes and winged spectacles?
00:07:27Christ, why is your strident call to arms, Peppered your ranks with these post-menopausic monsters?
00:07:33God forgive me, but I'd burn a lot of them, Crisp on their husbands funeral pyres.
00:07:37Uh, Wednesday, the Youth Club will be meeting to discuss this year's pantomime.
00:07:43Now, Mr. and Mrs. Stokes will be pleased to welcome any young people who are interested.
00:07:48Now, last year's pantomime was a very great success.
00:07:51Get away, you fools.
00:07:53Nip on a bus and get away from here.
00:07:57They'll gobble you up, chop off your hair, stamp you saved, wind you up and launch you down the aisle,
00:08:04hand in hand,
00:08:05in blinkers as big as bin lids.
00:08:09You tear them off and you're married, and sitting here, churning out the next generation.
00:08:15And the world's three stops on while you're still stuck at the depot.
00:08:21Last Sunday, you were invited to join a sit-down and fast as a protest against the war in Vietnam.
00:08:28Now, of course, this was a matter for individual consciences,
00:08:31but on behalf of Mr. Hill and myself, I would like to thank those of you who did attend.
00:08:36I feel sure they will agree it was a statement well worth the making.
00:08:40On Monday...
00:08:45Some trifle, give me a place.
00:08:47All right, but not too much.
00:08:49A big man like you, can't eat all the food you can get, especially in your job.
00:08:55Now, what about your company?
00:08:58We're lucky, Jeff.
00:09:00There's always a house for the job, the one thing.
00:09:04It's not easy for me, Missy.
00:09:06No, it's not.
00:09:08It works when the baby comes.
00:09:10Friend, I don't know.
00:09:11No.
00:09:12She means when we start a family.
00:09:17There's plenty of time for that.
00:09:20Get your home sorted first.
00:09:23Yes, that's what Gina says.
00:09:27You look as though you're enjoying that.
00:09:30Well, I would be if I hadn't had half a hundred ways already.
00:09:33Why the potential then?
00:09:35Oh, I see.
00:09:37Is it the one with the double cream and the hundreds and thousands?
00:09:39It is.
00:09:40Well, get it down you. I made that.
00:09:47You want to stand up and be counted, mate.
00:09:49Just stirring Alfred's conscience here.
00:09:51Wendy, please inform your husband, will you?
00:09:53I'm spoken for.
00:09:54There's a job, a church, a wife, and a God.
00:09:59And if he wants a peace, well, he can find them for it.
00:10:12Stop it, for God's sake.
00:10:14We'll have to put out with all these rodeos of yours
00:10:16without you trying to indoctrinate everybody.
00:10:19I hope he'll be getting at you again.
00:10:21Yeah, he is.
00:10:22He must think I'm worth converting.
00:10:23Al Stokes was doing his bit for mankind,
00:10:26where you was to learn your Ten Commandments.
00:10:29And what?
00:10:30Oh, you might very well ask.
00:10:32Well, yes, he's weighing as I am lying.
00:10:34But you didn't recognize that.
00:10:36The page.
00:10:37Eh?
00:10:38The page, the page.
00:10:39Oh.
00:10:41Are you doing very well?
00:10:42Yes.
00:10:44What's the yes for?
00:10:46Yes, it's going very well.
00:10:48It's harmless enough.
00:10:50Harmless?
00:10:52I'll shift mountains by being harmless.
00:10:54We'll not shift mountains.
00:10:56Well, it's not harm in trying.
00:10:57It's all too cozy to us, you know.
00:11:00Well, it all started with him coming in one day, right out of the blue.
00:11:03We'd had a social evening.
00:11:05Oh, it wasn't at a service?
00:11:06No, no.
00:11:07He wandered by and wandered in.
00:11:09Well, the point is this, you see.
00:11:11We're always on the lookout for a catch, you know.
00:11:13The net is out.
00:11:14So this is not known for a chap to wander in and ask to see the minister.
00:11:17And this he did.
00:11:18Hello.
00:11:19Good evening.
00:11:21Oh, are you looking for someone?
00:11:23I'm new in the area.
00:11:24I thought I might join your church.
00:11:27I've had a lot of experience, you see, in youth work.
00:11:30Oh, I see.
00:11:31I am a Methodist.
00:11:33Lapsed a little, I'm afraid, but I'm still a Methodist.
00:11:36Well, you won a word with our minister.
00:11:38He's over there with his wife in the blue dress.
00:11:41And your wife, not the minister.
00:11:44Thank you very much.
00:11:48He's here, Wonder.
00:11:49Laughing boy.
00:11:50Perhaps he's come to read the meter.
00:11:52Mr. Evans, the same.
00:11:53I was wondering if I might join your church.
00:11:58Right.
00:11:59Just give me a minute and I'll come and have a look at it.
00:12:01They're waiting to do the motion.
00:12:03But I can't do two jobs at once, can I?
00:12:05But can I?
00:12:07All right, Mrs. Atkinson.
00:12:08Here, you turn the pages and I'll do the geezer.
00:12:14I am a Methodist.
00:12:15Lapsed a little, I'm afraid.
00:12:17As I'm new in the area, I was thinking...
00:12:19What an ideal way of getting to know people.
00:12:21Yes.
00:12:22I mean, I don't want you to think I'm making a convenience of you.
00:12:25Well, that's what we're here for.
00:12:27Yes.
00:12:28That's what I thought.
00:12:30Well, welcome, Mr. Jones.
00:12:33Tobias Jones.
00:12:35Henry Tobias Jones.
00:12:36Looks like a fish on the hook.
00:12:38Oh, on the hook.
00:12:39He's practically in the pan, that fella.
00:12:42Yes, he's a catch, all right.
00:12:43Look at Jeff, he's got his paternal face on.
00:12:46Well, this seemed almost too good to be true.
00:12:49And although we're always after people, I was a bit suspicious of this approach, so...
00:12:52I weighed him up.
00:12:54And what was his appearance?
00:12:56His appearance was very smart.
00:12:58In what sort of way?
00:12:59I mean, what would you say his job was?
00:13:00I'd have said something like a bank clerk.
00:13:03Mr. and Mrs. Hill, Mr. Jones.
00:13:05Mr. Jones is interested in joining us.
00:13:07So are you saying?
00:13:08Hello.
00:13:09Mr. Jones is a colleague of yours, Wendy.
00:13:11You teach?
00:13:12Yes.
00:13:12Locally?
00:13:13I'm very experienced with young people.
00:13:15What subjects?
00:13:16I've just moved into the area, you see.
00:13:18Thought I might be of some help.
00:13:20Well, great.
00:13:21We can do with a bit of support, eh, Mr. Evans?
00:13:23We intelligentsia?
00:13:24We can, indeed.
00:13:25A bit reactionary around here, Mr. Jones.
00:13:26It's the water, you know.
00:13:27Talking of water...
00:13:28The Esker's gone again.
00:13:30So I believe.
00:13:30I've just had a look.
00:13:31I can't find a thing.
00:13:33Hello there.
00:13:34You popped in after all, have you?
00:13:37On the port last Sunday, remember?
00:13:39I went to get you a hymn book.
00:13:41Where'd you go on?
00:13:44I must have frightened him off.
00:13:45Mr. Stokes, Mr. Jones.
00:13:47Oh, delighted.
00:13:49Shall I have a look?
00:13:50I'm quite angry.
00:13:52The water eaters.
00:13:53Yeah, that's it.
00:13:55Come on.
00:13:56Sorry you spoke.
00:13:58I'd better look.
00:13:58I can't find a thing wrong with it.
00:14:00I don't know.
00:14:00Al's quite burned over.
00:14:03The way to a man's heart is through his ascot.
00:14:06What's his name again?
00:14:09Henry Tobias Jones, M.A. Oxen.
00:14:12The where is?
00:14:16When I ask you all that Jesus is mine.
00:14:21The water moyen of glory divine.
00:14:28The head of salvation,
00:14:31mercis of God.
00:14:34The Lambay spirit washed in his blood.
00:14:40This is my story, this is my song
00:14:46Praising my Savior all the day long
00:14:53This is my story, this is my song
00:14:59Praising my Savior all the day long
00:15:07What do you see to the kids?
00:15:09Yes, I picked them up now
00:15:10Okay
00:15:11Good morning, Miss Hodgson
00:15:12Good morning, Miss
00:15:13It's getting cold, isn't it?
00:15:14Cold there, yes, it is
00:15:16Goodbye
00:15:16Einstein was in again, did you see it?
00:15:18Don't be cruel, he's a very nice young man
00:15:21That's all you women tell me
00:15:22I'll see you later
00:15:23Good morning, Mrs. Atkinson
00:15:24Enjoyed your slides on Tuesday
00:15:26Quite a little photographer, aren't you?
00:15:27I've seen worse
00:15:28Very interesting afternoon
00:15:30Oh, glad you enjoyed it
00:15:31I did
00:15:32Hypocrite
00:15:33Not me, never
00:15:34She couldn't photograph a brick wall
00:15:36As long as she thinks she can
00:15:38Face, son, face
00:15:39Well said
00:15:40The opium of the masses
00:15:41Excuse me, Bob
00:15:43I managed to bring him in this time, Mr. Evans
00:15:45Yes, so I noticed
00:15:46Nice to see you again, Mr. Jones
00:15:47Thank you
00:15:48Enjoyed your sermon
00:15:49Very interesting
00:15:50As a taste of your own medicine
00:15:51What do you mean?
00:15:52I was very good, wasn't I, Wendy?
00:15:53Pass me the opium, darling
00:15:56Henry says he'd like to have a word with you
00:16:12America, Canada, the continent
00:16:14I've lectured all over, mostly young people
00:16:17In Wales, I was in charge of a multi-purpose youth centre
00:16:20In Wales, run by the local authority
00:16:22Wales?
00:16:23My home, you see
00:16:24My home's in Wales
00:16:25Why'd you leave?
00:16:26Restless
00:16:27All the travelling, you see
00:16:28Can't stay in one place anymore
00:16:30Did you like America?
00:16:32Scouting
00:16:32I've always liked scouting
00:16:34Queen scout as a boy
00:16:36Do you have scouts?
00:16:37A troop?
00:16:38I'm afraid not
00:16:38I'm not too keen on uniforms
00:16:39We have junior clubs, a youth club
00:16:41Great
00:16:42I'll be able to help you then
00:16:43Well, you do appreciate, Mr. Jones
00:16:45We do like to get to know people a bit first
00:16:47Before we offer the positions of authority
00:16:49Especially where the young people are concerned
00:16:50Young people
00:16:52I like working with young people
00:16:54Perhaps I could help at the Sunday school
00:16:55Perhaps
00:16:57Have a word with the superintendent
00:16:59I will
00:17:03Well, this is where I turn off here
00:17:05Oh, I'll walk you home
00:17:06I'm in no hurry
00:17:09Oh
00:17:17You've made me very welcome, Mr. Evans
00:17:19It's all part of the service
00:17:20I can see there's great scope for a person with my sort of training
00:17:24Who do I see about the youth club?
00:17:26Mr. Stokes
00:17:27How?
00:17:28Yes, he runs it with his wife
00:17:29Yes
00:17:30It's a great place, America
00:17:34No home church in Wales
00:17:35Who is the minister?
00:17:37I might know him
00:17:37He's dead
00:17:38I did a lecture tour here, you know
00:17:40And Canada
00:17:41Mostly young people
00:17:43I found it very rewarding
00:17:45I'm glad
00:17:47Well, here we are, Mr. Jones
00:17:49Call me Henry
00:17:50Henry
00:17:51I'd ask you in for coffee
00:17:53But I've got to look at tonight's sermon before lunch
00:17:54My busy day
00:17:55I'll be there
00:17:56Oh, pleased to hear that
00:18:03I'll see you this evening then
00:18:04Right
00:18:07And don't work too hard
00:18:08No
00:18:17Tobias Jones, M.A.
00:18:19He walked me home
00:18:21Nice
00:18:22Sing him again
00:18:24And again and again
00:18:26And again and again
00:18:45So it went on from there
00:18:48He attended church very regularly
00:18:50He appeared at the Sunday school
00:18:51Offering his services to the Sunday school superintendent
00:18:54Who immediately got involved
00:18:55Who were always keen on people helping in Sunday school
00:18:58And that sort of thing
00:19:00He helped with the youth fellowship
00:19:01And that's the youth club
00:19:03The youth club, yes
00:19:05And he was making himself out to be much younger at the time
00:19:09Well, bearing in mind we weren't acting suspicious
00:19:12Although I did have some question marks in my mind
00:19:15As I do with everyone I meet
00:19:16About what sort of person they are
00:19:17You know, you try to weigh them up to make an assessment
00:19:21You know, to try to discover there's any gold in this bit of rock
00:19:24So when Henry was offering himself round like this
00:19:27He seemed quite harmless
00:19:29And although I realised his stories were exaggerated
00:19:32In what way?
00:19:33How do you mean?
00:19:34Well, the first time he came to the youth fellowship
00:19:38We've got about 20 or 30 youngsters there, you see
00:19:40And we used to like to have people come and speak to them
00:19:42And this was very popular
00:19:43So we were always on the lookout for someone who could do something
00:19:46So Henry said
00:19:48I've been to the Bahamas and I can give you a lecture
00:19:54The Bahamas contained nearly 700 islands
00:19:59Most of them uninhabited
00:20:01And about 2,400 rocks and caves
00:20:07The island chain starts from about 50 miles east of Palm Beach
00:20:13Florida
00:20:14And stretches 750 miles in a southeasterly direction
00:20:19To within 50 miles of Cuba
00:20:23Chief island is New Providence
00:20:28Known best for its attractions of Nassau
00:20:32A city characterised by its wealth of historical charm
00:20:38And tropical atmosphere
00:20:40Wonderful soft sand beaches
00:20:44Water sports
00:20:46Sightseeing
00:20:48And a wealth of exciting nightlife
00:20:51Spend the sun-filled days
00:20:55Blazing on the beaches
00:20:57And at night
00:20:59Enjoy the never-ending entertainment
00:21:03The other islands
00:21:05Bearing magical names like
00:21:08Ulisaria
00:21:10Andios
00:21:11And Harbour Island
00:21:12Offer a true escape from the crowds
00:21:15And cares of everyday life
00:21:18A memorable holiday can be had by hopping between the islands
00:21:24For the sportsmen
00:21:26World record catches can be made in these waters
00:21:30From Columbus on
00:21:33Travellers have extolled the climate of the Bahamas
00:21:37The playgrounds

00:21:48The playgrounds
00:21:52The playgrounds
00:21:55The playgrounds
00:22:15but there again you see despite all this he constituted no danger no problem and we exist
00:22:20to help people you see of course by this time we realized that his degree and his lecturing were
00:22:26well really you know a fib but we carried on because we thought this boy had a genuine
00:22:32Christian experience he was genuinely enthusiastic about the sort of things we were doing

00:29:36The whole accounts are all the way along, and all the time is still there.
00:29:41So, ladies and gentlemen, from BBC Television, it's time for service and motion for television.
00:29:48First, transport and motion for the television.
00:29:52The BBC Two transmitter at Piperston has been renovating as a huge power since 9 o'clock,
00:29:58and will continue to do so for a short time.
00:30:05The BBC One and BBC Two will start in Brighton.
00:30:11The next station are none of the slave places in town.
00:30:13BBC One will be on campus.
00:30:15Then, Francis, fly away, he'll fear not what can say.
00:30:23He'll pay my eyes and day to be a pilgrim.
00:30:30It's for you.
00:30:31It's what?
00:30:32For you and Connie, a present from me.
00:30:34Oh, never. No, I can't accept that.
00:30:37Please. You've been so good to me since I've been here.
00:30:39And I was too late to contribute, you know, to the youth club present for your birthday, so I got
00:30:43you this.
00:30:44It's a good one. The man in the shop said so. I asked for the best.
00:30:48A gift? Birthday present, yeah.
00:30:51Looks expensive.
00:30:52Twenty quids worth.
00:30:54Well, we can't accept it. It's way out of proportion. We don't need it.
00:30:59Perhaps he needs you to take it. Could be the only way you can find to show his gratitude.
00:31:04Well, what for?
00:31:05We only try to make him feel atone.
00:31:08I'm feeling, but for Henry, that's a brand new experience.
00:31:10The club he expressed interest, particular interest in, was the 9s, 10s, 11s and 12s.
00:31:16The 10 plus, really.
00:31:18And he came and helped out and he was magnificent.
00:31:20He got on well with these youngsters and he spent time with them, ages of time.
00:31:26He brought all his own equipment, plastic balls, rings, hoops to play with, that sort of thing.
00:31:31How did you think he could afford all this?
00:31:34Well, remember, he was at this stage still a school teacher.
00:31:38The 10th century The 10th century, the 10s and 12s, the 10s, the 25s, the 12s, the 12s, the 20s,
00:32:04the 10s, the 12s, of the 11s, of the 2005s, of the 11s, of the12s, of the 19s.
00:32:06You've got a grandly snatch in there, are you? Trying to grab yourself a handful.
00:32:09Fire something at play, boy.
00:32:11Stuck in the old pit, then.
00:32:14She'd smoke tape and stomp on this man.
00:32:15Where's the top cap, William? The one with a smile on his face.
00:32:18Pits you up one of these days, bill boy. Won't I just hit your beaches?
00:32:24Hang on down, then. Put a smile on his face.
00:32:26Well, I can't, can I? Why can't you?
00:32:28Well, she's only just had pubs, hasn't she?
00:32:31Two, four, six, eight, ten, twelve, fourteen, sixteen. Right, eight aside.
00:32:37Two captains, Peter and Robert. Right, lads?
00:32:40Two dozen wood screws, two inch.
00:32:44One three and a half inch bit.
00:32:46And a big French kiss for your Uncle Bob.
00:32:50What's the matter, William? Don't you love us no more, then?
00:32:53Hurt his feeling, have we?
00:32:55Oh, yeah. Sensitive boys, these pubs.
00:32:58Gentle souls.
00:32:59What souls?
00:33:00Arseholes.
00:33:01Ah, cheap today. Cheaper than yesterday.
00:33:05Standing up or lying down. A one and six or half a ground.
00:33:10Tra-la-la-la-la-la-la. Tra-la-la-la-la-la-la.
00:33:18Very much, William.
00:33:20Thank you very much. You're a Christian.
00:33:24Yeah.
00:33:25I need thee every hour, world's gracious Lord.
00:33:35The gentle voice I find, and peace of all.
00:33:44I need thee, oh, I need thee. Every hour I need thee.
00:33:56Oh, bless me now, my Saviour. I come to thee.
00:34:08What are you doing about lunch?
00:34:09Nothing. Probably frying myself something. I don't eat much.
00:34:12Good. You come home with us, then. The kids will be telling us all about you.
00:34:14At the youth club, you made quite an impression.
00:34:17Before we go, Henry, it's like feeding the 5,000 earlier.
00:34:19Do you like spots, Henry?
00:34:21One or two, fine.
00:34:22Can I have your other?
00:34:22Nick, leave it there.
00:34:24There's two, eh?
00:34:25I know there's two, eh?
00:34:26And Henry only wants one.
00:34:27He may want one later.
00:34:29Will you, Henry?
00:34:29I don't think so.
00:34:30I don't have it on top.
00:34:32That's not fair.
00:34:33You can have one of mine.
00:34:34That's not fair either.
00:34:35You like potatoes.
00:34:36Henry doesn't.
00:34:37Oh, I do.
00:34:38See, Nicholas?
00:34:39Henry does like potatoes.
00:34:41Giving them back.
00:34:42He just said he didn't want it.
00:34:44Oh, for God's sake, get it down you, Nick.
00:34:45More sprouts, Henry.
00:34:46No thanks.
00:34:47Claire, you can have Henry's sprouts.
00:34:49Thanks.
00:34:50Thanks, Henry.
00:34:52Don't you like sprouts, Henry?
00:34:53Never mind, Nick.
00:34:55Just eat.
00:34:56I want some gravy.
00:34:57Hold on.
00:34:57Gravy coming up.
00:35:00Nice bit of meat.
00:35:01Cheers.
00:35:02What should you get from him?
00:35:03One on the corner.
00:35:05You know, the twinkle.
00:35:06Oh, young one.
00:35:08If I went there, we wouldn't be able to cut it, let alone eat it.
00:35:13All right, Henry?
00:35:14Fine.
00:35:15Thanks.
00:35:16Let's get away, you say you find the best.
00:35:19Kendon beating Webb.
00:35:21A neat run through to Bellamy, just inside the Chelsea penalty area, but easily taken by
00:35:24McCready and pushed through to Hollins.
00:35:26Hollins still.
00:35:27A longboard to Houseman on the left, quickly across to Osgood.
00:35:29And Osgood now agreed.
00:35:30Whoa!
00:35:31Just over.
00:35:33What a marvellous run from Osgood.
00:35:35Must be a corner.
00:35:36It looks like it might have just hit the woodwork as Thompson titted over.
00:35:38It's a good try, though.
00:35:39It's a good try.
00:35:40You a football fan, Henry?
00:35:41Yes.
00:35:42I was there yesterday.
00:35:43Watching.
00:35:44Off and go.
00:35:46Know all the players.
00:35:47Personally.
00:35:47Oh, who do you know?
00:35:48I had a trial once.
00:35:50Cardiff City.
00:35:51As a boy.
00:35:52Just a trial.
00:35:53Can you get me any Osgood?
00:35:54And cricket.
00:35:55Like to keep yourself fit, you see.
00:35:58Not a patch on playing, watching.
00:36:00Insult to the soul, a body gone to seed.
00:36:03Teach yourself.
00:36:05Really?
00:36:06It is.
00:36:06Don't pester.
00:36:07Web to take it.
00:36:09To Hanson.
00:36:10I wanted to know.
00:36:10He did, but that's it.
00:36:12Talk to Osgood.
00:36:13Unmarked on the left.
00:36:14Crossing it.
00:36:14Harrison in.
00:36:15Oh, just wide.
00:36:16Oh, how close can you get?
00:36:21People ignore me, usually.
00:36:24Or get aggressive.
00:36:25One of the two.
00:36:26But usually they ignore me.
00:36:28It's always been like that.
00:36:30Nobody's ever listened.
00:36:31Makes you think, you know.
00:36:33Wonder if you've anything to say.
00:36:36Interesting.
00:36:37Worthwhile.
00:36:38And after a while, you stop believing, thinking at all.
00:36:42Nobody tells you, you see, who you are.
00:36:45When you're right.
00:36:46Or when you're wrong.
00:36:48You just agree.
00:36:50Agree with everybody.
00:36:52But here, today, you've all listened.
00:36:57There must be a lot of people like me.
00:37:00You've got such deep, secure roots spreading out.
00:37:05Fair.
00:37:07Fair.
00:37:07We could all sit in your branches.
00:37:10Hide in your shade.
00:37:12Better than all your marches that, Bob.
00:37:14Don't you think?
00:37:16And your kids.
00:37:18Proper little bushes they are too, eh?
00:37:21Take a lot to shake those two beauties.
00:37:24When I was a kid, I wanted to wake up 25.
00:37:30When I was a kid.
00:37:49I was a kid.
00:37:57I was a kid.
00:37:59I'd like to thank you.
00:38:00I'd like to thank you.
00:38:00You, I'd like to thank you.
00:38:00I'm a young man.
00:38:00it's the kids what about them well i mean they're not stupid they're beginning to notice
00:38:17i i just don't know why oh there's nothing wrong sex wise jim and i love each other
00:38:24it's always been marvelous at least i think it has i have nothing to compare it with
00:38:31but nothing ever happens and i want to have a baby oh i don't know it's just
00:38:38well it's beginning to make it all seem a bit futile
00:38:42i i can't explain it but without results what's the point talk about supply and demand
00:38:49you're demanding and the supplies there if you're willing to look you mean adopt one no i couldn't
00:38:54it's not the same no it's not there's misery all over nobody sees it it's hidden away under stones
00:39:04real misery miserable kids souls growing up in a desert crying out to be grabbed and held and
00:39:12shielded and warmed and all the world sees are the strapping young lads at wimbledon running after
00:39:18balls you've got a hole in your life a vast void pleading to be filled and you hang about for
00:39:25an accident of nature you can have a double helping my way you catch your happiness and cure a kid's
00:39:33pain
00:39:34all in the one fell swoop
00:39:54you're not
00:40:04you're the first person i've known
00:40:05what i'm looking at now i'm very fond of you
00:40:15you see i had to play all this down because the reputation of the church was involved
00:40:19the parents became worried about their children because he'd take them out all day on a saturday
00:40:23morning and not bring them back till nine o'clock at night and all this without the superintendent's
00:40:28knowledge or approval all mine so then i took time out to examine him and study him
00:40:35by this time he got himself a job as a play group organizer with the local authority here
00:40:40under another completely different name of course and i watched him ordering those kids about
00:40:46i saw him lose his temper violently and nastily he was taking too much on himself
00:40:54you see there's a very fine line when you're playing about with little girls
00:41:00now i play with little girls i love them and i give the kids a swing you know as you
00:41:05do as a father
00:41:05you swing them round well henry did the same thing but with a difference he'd put his arms under
00:41:12their arms and he'd swing them swing them round close to them and he'd give them a hug
00:41:20well this is just wanting affection and even now i wouldn't read too much into it but
00:41:26well with the boys no i'm not so sure but the boys i think undoubtedly the tendencies were there
00:41:32because he was not fulfilled you see and then there was one other disastrous thing happened
00:41:38ogling at me i know i can see the way you look at me undressing me lusting after me
00:41:48i feel your night clawing at me i can feel your breath
00:42:21it's as if he's in constant chaos
00:42:24reaching for outstretched hands that just crumble in his grasp he's bewildered crying for help
00:42:33and somewhere in that chaos jeff in that limbo there's henry
00:42:37we've got to find him and in christ's name embrace him i tried to reach him to talk to him
00:42:44he didn't hurt me believe me he wouldn't hurt a fly the man's ill i realize that we all do
00:42:52but he
00:42:54needs treatment the devil casting out so to speak but there are places special places qualified people
00:43:02not us not our church it's the children i think about he's not fit well something's got to be done
00:43:11it's past a joke well it was never a joke i was stupid to ever think it was yes what's
00:43:19he to do
00:43:19he can only respond to his instincts he's crying out to belong to be accepted on fictitious terms so
00:43:26blaming what anyway he does belong he belongs with us for how long knives are out already no no knives
00:43:34are out shields are up they're only human after all they're frightened for their children and
00:43:40themselves but most of all for him i'm proud of them all all of them want to help him this
00:43:46is what
00:43:46it's all about you can keep your sit-downs your meals on wheels your glorious hymns this is a real
00:43:54cry from the wilderness why did he come to us i wonder why didn't he go to the pubs of
00:44:00the society
00:44:01of queers he probably did we can't fail him jack he won't as long as he'll listen
00:44:10he's his biggest danger that lad will have to be cloistered
00:44:29henry
00:44:31i'm perfectly certain you know what i'm going to say
00:44:35if i'm any judge it's been said to you before many times in part at least some of it may
00:44:40be new
00:44:40to you if it wasn't you wouldn't have come to us in the first place
00:44:47i'm taking you off sunday school and the youth club you've been taking too many liberties
00:44:55some of the parents are getting worried about your involvement with their children
00:45:00i'm afraid it can't go on now let's get down to brass tacks i want your full case history
00:45:08i'm going to tell you some things about yourself which i think may be true
00:45:12but as far as i'm concerned they don't really matter you've been a most kind and generous person
00:45:18and we're grateful to you and you've helped in the church and we'll stand by you
00:45:25you've got more things going in your favor than against you and we won't wash our hands of you
00:45:30we want you to stay in our church because we think of you as one of us
00:45:35but we think you need treatment well what the hell did you expect him to do bombarding him with that
00:45:40lot that was a traumatic experience mate even a balanced person would crumble under that sort of
00:45:45hammering my god no wonder he hopped it it's a wonder he didn't jump in the river that's just the
00:45:50point he didn't because he feels no guilt no remorse why should he because he did wrong that's why
00:45:57ill or not the same law applies that same man stood up in my sunday school and recited them passionately
00:46:04the ten commandments the children were spellbound now we find he's a thief and a liar to henry they're
00:46:12just words beautiful words poetry from childhood no more than a nursery rhyme he's no conception of their
00:46:19meaning their application to everyday life his life is unreal a fantasy such rules don't apply
00:46:26neither does shock therapy did he admit it did he say i am all these things he doesn't know who
00:46:32he is
00:46:33he's just the man he invents in fleeting grasps of time the teacher the lecturer the traveler athlete
00:46:39and he builds on these great towers of fantasy till the whole thing topples over
00:46:43or is systematically shattered he was harmless he was happy why did you have to crush him like that do
00:46:51you believe he was harmless the boy was blossoming we all knew the score we could have contained him
00:46:58through our church he'd become a human being with blood in his veins he was liked and disliked
00:47:04admired and ridiculed what the hell if he lived a lie here he was somebody now god knows who or
00:47:11what he is
00:47:13can't we get him back no he wouldn't come back why our only hope was to get through to the
00:47:22real henry
00:47:23this i tried to do and this was too much i had to because of the others the people he
00:47:29touched
00:47:30i wanted to put him right that was the crunch he's happier in make-belief
00:47:36in those good in which he knew god would be wise in mighty and special he provides
00:47:53in mighty and special he provides
00:48:04Almighty, victorious, my great name we praise.
00:48:16Unwasting, unwasting, and sorrowful might.
00:48:25No wanting, no wasting, the cruelest divine.
00:48:34My justice, my love, and my soul in the world.
00:48:43My crowns, we drop out in the wilderness and cry.
00:49:20Good morning, Henry.
00:49:45Henry.
00:49:48Henry.
00:49:49Hey, Henry.
00:49:49Henry.
00:49:58Henry.
00:50:01Henry.
00:50:03Henry.
00:50:05Henry.
00:50:11Henry.
00:50:16Henry.
00:50:20Henry.
00:50:22Henry.
00:50:28Henry.
00:50:32Henry.
00:50:34Henry.
00:50:35Henry.
00:50:45Henry.
00:50:48Henry.
00:50:49Henry.
00:50:51Henry.
00:50:52I'm not quite sure about his name, but I could describe him to you.
00:50:55He's about 5'5", slightly built, darkish hair, 29 or 30,
00:51:00nicely spoken, enthusiastic sort of chap.
00:51:03You mean John?
00:51:04Do I?
00:51:05Sounds like him, yes.
00:51:07John Rhys-Davies from Wales, a musician.
00:51:10Yes, that does sound like him.
00:51:12He's a musician, is he?
00:51:13Used to be, violinist, Welsh BBC orchestra.
00:51:17Had to give it up, damaged his hand.
00:51:19He's volunteered to help with the choir.
00:51:21A very willing sort of fellow.
00:51:23Yes, he is.
00:51:24Now, that's what I want to talk to you about.
00:51:25So I told him, laid it out before him over the phone,
00:51:28spoke for over an hour, giving him the facts, the evidence.
00:51:32Henry was serving, you see, and taking communion.
00:51:35Of course, I realised by this time that his links with the free church were largely fictitious,
00:51:39but I couldn't believe he was a confirmed Anglican.
00:51:43What I did know was that he had a free church heritage from somewhere,
00:51:47some institution, a Bernardo's home or the like.
00:51:49I was certain of it.
00:51:51And there he was, parading, dressed to kill, at an Anglo-Catholic altar.
00:51:54And this would have been sacrilege to Howard Whitehead, if he'd chosen to believe it.
00:51:59Come off it, Geoffy, up to the left you, didn't he?
00:52:01Who came to me?
00:52:03What's happened before, it'll happen again, and vice versa.
00:52:05No need to hound a fella just because he wasn't happy, will you?
00:52:08He couldn't have been happier.
00:52:09Oh, then why did he leave?
00:52:10Because I asked questions, questions he didn't want to answer.
00:52:13Oh, Lord.
00:52:14What do you mean, oh, Lord?
00:52:15You've been poking into his past, have you?
00:52:17There were some things I had to know.
00:52:18Not had to know, wanted to know.
00:52:20Look, it's because people have passed, they come to us in the first place.
00:52:24It's not their past we're concerned with.
00:52:27It's what a man is.
00:52:28He's seen to be that matters.
00:52:30And what do you see Henry to be?
00:52:32Well, let's just say I prefer to form my own judgments and not rely on hearsay.
00:52:36Hearsay?
00:52:37I've given you the facts.
00:52:38Morning, sister.
00:52:40Anybody new from me today?
00:52:42I have pity.
00:52:43You make the best cup of tea ever, babe.
00:52:45Facts, you say.
00:52:47Just look at these facts you've given me.
00:52:49Gifts you suspect he can't afford.
00:52:52Hysterical outbursts of a sexually deprived girl who insists he didn't hurt her.
00:52:57Hits of homosexuality.
00:52:59But nothing you can put your finger on.
00:53:02And then delusions of grandeur.
00:53:05God knows, if I didn't have delusions of grandeur, I wouldn't last five minutes in this job.
00:53:09And these are facts.
00:53:11You condemn a man on this sort of evidence.
00:53:13If this is progressive Christianity, God save us from it.
00:53:17And then you say you suspect he's not a confirmed Anglican.
00:53:22Do me a favor, Jeffrey.
00:53:23Stick to spotting the Wesleyans.
00:53:24Leave the sea of ease to me.
00:53:26I couldn't care less what Henry was.
00:53:27Because he could have been a new guinea cannibal for all I care.
00:53:30I only mention that aspect of the case because I knew it would matter to you.
00:53:33I'm good, sir, with the fact that I need help.
00:53:35And I'm not, I suppose.
00:53:36His mind, his body, his soul can wait.
00:53:39All right.
00:53:39Let's take talk.
00:53:40Watch it.
00:53:40I wouldn't put it past you either.
00:53:42Ha, ha.
00:53:42Those are the days.
00:53:43No, honestly, Jeff, I feel just as qualified as...
00:53:47To do what?
00:53:48Stick him in a nightshirt and light him to bed?
00:53:51Huh?
00:53:51Nasty.
00:53:52Look, Howard, you must realize the potential danger this man is to your church if you don't
00:53:57want to look at it any other way.
00:53:58I'm warning you now, without treatment, he could bring your church down.
00:54:02Mr. Onyx-Dobuti, superintendent, will be proud of you.
00:54:04No, John, Henry as you call him, came to us for succor, and succor he shall have in
00:54:11the manner he's chosen, nightshirts and all.
00:54:13I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that.
00:54:15I'll be my guest.
00:54:17Embrace him by all means.
00:54:18God knows your ways as valid as ours.
00:54:20Very generous of you.
00:54:21But please be warned, the lad's ill.
00:54:24Oh?
00:54:24Whose diagnosis?
00:54:25Yours?
00:54:26Mine and various members of my church.
00:54:28All qualified psychoanalysts, no doubt.
00:54:31Now, look.
00:54:31I have looked.
00:54:33And I've liked what I've seen.
00:54:36Hero man says admittedly, but he's enthusiastic and extremely devout.
00:54:40He's the sort of man I'm proud to call a friend.
00:54:47He's ruining the choir.
00:54:49Ruining it.
00:54:51All the hard work over the years.
00:54:53Ruined by the charlatan.
00:54:56The picker must be mad giving him a free hand like this.
00:55:00BBC Welsh Orchestra.
00:55:02He couldn't conduct a number nine bus.
00:55:05He's adjuiced us to his chandles.
00:55:08His musical background's invaluable to us.
00:55:11You know, we lay much greater emphasis on the quality of our music than you do.
00:55:17And he's also had a lot of experience with young people.
00:55:20He's accepted a great deal of responsibility already.
00:55:23He's very enthusiastic about the scout troupe.
00:55:27We just can't afford him.
00:55:29We just can't afford to take the risk.
00:55:31The whole reputation of the troops at stake.
00:55:35Some of the boys are encouraging him, true.
00:55:37But he's the adult, not them.
00:55:40God help us if the parents start getting ideas.
00:55:45He's so damn delicate, though.
00:55:47I wouldn't dare approach the vicar.
00:55:49He not only gives his time, he goes to considerable personal expenses.
00:55:55You know how difficult it is to find such help these days.
00:55:59It's such a relief to be able to unload some of the responsibility now and again.
00:56:03And he's very popular with the ladies.
00:56:06Enjoy the melodies of Mexico, played by Mariachis.
00:56:11Dine leisurely.
00:56:12How dare he.
00:56:15He must take us for idiots.
00:56:17The man's quite obviously never been near Mexico.
00:56:22We must be unbalanced.
00:56:26To think we entrust our children into his care.
00:56:29Lord knows what sort of rubbish he bumps into them.
00:56:32Or what he gets up to.
00:56:34Most of all, he has what I like to call stickability.
00:56:38Fruitfulness.
00:56:40Above all, young John is faithful.
00:56:42Well, he'd be faithful to a cabbage if it hit him in its leaves.
00:56:47Sorry you have such a poor opinion of him.
00:56:49On the contrary, he's very precious to me.
00:56:50Somebody well worth saving.
00:56:53Don't evangelize to me, please.
00:56:55Perhaps you need it most.
00:56:56All right.
00:56:57What do you propose I should do?
00:56:58Send him packing?
00:56:59Back to good old wholesome, warm-hearted Methodism?
00:57:02Care for him.
00:57:04Feed your lamb.
00:57:05God knows it's what we're paid for.
00:57:07Perhaps we should form a trade union.
00:57:09We're his only hope.
00:57:11That's why he turned to us.
00:57:12To me, Geoffrey.
00:57:14In the final analysis, he turned to me.
00:57:16He's my concern now, not yours.
00:57:18You remember that.
00:57:21Look, he's happy with us.
00:57:24I can stand a little eccentricity if I see a man's content.
00:57:28Cast jealousies aside.
00:57:31Leave him in peace.
00:57:37Goodbye, Howard.
00:57:40You know, sometimes I wonder if you and I are on the same side.
00:57:49My dear friends, today I have to mention a matter which has long been a source of great anguish
00:57:58to me, but doubtless there are those among you who have experienced similar troubled hours,
00:58:07but have chosen to let their misgivings smoulder in their breasts.
00:58:13However, when you hear what I have to say, I am sure you will agree with me that it was
00:58:19better faced now
00:58:21than allowed to go on from bad to worse.
00:58:26I refer, of course, to the very dilapidated state of the vestments belonging to this historic church.
00:58:36We are extremely grateful to Mrs. Alice Marshall Rose
00:58:41for her most generous gift of a gorgeous set of cloth-of-gold vestments
00:58:46in memory of her late husband.
00:58:50To ensure that we have a complete set for use at festivals,
00:58:56we have decided to add a dalmatic and a tunicle,
00:59:01the vestments worn by the deacon and the sub-deacon.
00:59:06The tunicle has been presented by the vicar.
00:59:12The dalmatic has yet to find a donor.
00:59:17On my recent visit to Rome, I purchased these magnificent vestments
00:59:24in the anticipation.
00:59:26Now, in the certainty...
00:59:28I should be delighted if you would accept the dalmatic as a gift from myself
00:59:34in gratitude for the kindness and understanding you have shown towards me.
00:59:39All the Christian soldiers marching and to war
00:59:49With the cross of Jesus glowing on his throne
00:59:59Christ, the high of our master, is the Christian Lord
01:00:10Christ, the high of our master, is the Christian Lord
01:00:11The world is forevermore, seen in battle's love
01:00:20On the Christian soldiers marching and to war

01:05:44I've just been on the tab. He said he doesn't have nothing available in a cow and bear arse.
01:05:47Hey, you tell him he's a bastard liar. He was the first one to put me onto it.
01:05:52Hey, tell him he's a bloody liar from me, will you?
01:05:55Oh, Joe, this is the fella.
01:05:57Oh, this is it.
01:06:00You know what you're here for, do you?
01:06:02Yes.
01:06:03Stand up, then.
01:06:07David Williams, alias John Rhys-Davies.
01:06:12He charged that on the 6th of August 1970 at St. Anthony's Parish Church, he was still a wild, a
01:06:17manic tea maker at the value of 15 pounds, and 15 pounds cash, the property of the Reverend Howard Whitehead.
01:06:23He shocked him. No other word for it. Howard Whitehead shocked him.
01:06:27I wish you'd come to me earlier.
01:06:29I only found out about it last night.
01:06:31I've only the one case here. I doubt if I could do much now, anyway.
01:06:35How do you mean?
01:06:37My hands are tied. They have to refer the case to me before I can act.
01:06:41Well, surely you can speak to them informally, tell them what I told you.
01:06:45If what you suspect is true, I'll take the opinion that society must be protected, especially for the kids.
01:06:53And for his own sake as well.
01:06:57There's simply no evidence, you see.
01:07:00Nothing concrete to say. It's simply opinions. And lay opinions of that.
01:07:05If you could recommend treatment.
01:07:07I'll do my best.
01:07:10He's an incorrigible petty thief. That's how the court will see it.
01:07:13They're a dime a dozen.
01:07:15I doubt if they'll even stomach a remand. They're such as simply not dangerous enough.
01:07:22I'm sorry.
01:07:23I agree with you. He shouldn't be here at all.
01:07:25But the courts do have a responsibility.
01:07:28Yes, to Henry.
01:07:32They may still refer the case to me. You never know your luck.
01:07:51Now, this is a case which you can either have dealt with here in this court this morning,
01:07:55or you may, if you wish, be heard before a judge and jury at the next quarter sessions.
01:08:00Do you understand this?
01:08:01Yes.
01:08:03Do you want the case dealt with this morning?
01:08:05Yes.
01:08:06Do you plead guilty or not guilty?
01:08:08Guilty.
01:08:12I swear by a mighty God that the evidence I shall give...
01:08:14Whitehead's not coming.
01:08:16No, he's washed his hands of him.
01:08:18Well.
01:08:22Brief facts of this case, Your Worship, are following a complaint of a theft of a tea maker and £15
01:08:27cash.
01:08:28I went to St. Anthony's Church and saw the vicar, the Reverend Howard Whitehead.
01:08:32He alleged that the prisoner had stolen the property.
01:08:35When I questioned the defendant, he admitted the offences and said that he'd given it away to a woman.
01:08:40He was unable to supply any details of this person.
01:08:44Further inquiries have since been made and police have not been able to trace the property.
01:08:48He was cautioned and taken to Edgegreen Police Station when he was charged.
01:08:52Who was this woman you say you gave the property to?
01:08:55A lady.
01:08:56An elderly lady.
01:08:58She said she could do with it, so I gave it to her.
01:09:00You didn't know her, yet you gave it to her.
01:09:03She needed it.
01:09:04She looked as though she really needed it.
01:09:07Is there anything else you'd like to tell the court?
01:09:10No.
01:09:12Anything known?
01:09:13On the 2nd of February 1965 at West London, he was convicted of theft and fined £5.
01:09:19On the 23rd of April at Acton, he was convicted of theft and fined £15.
01:09:24On the 10th of June 1969 at Bow Street, he was convicted of theft and fined £15 and received 12
01:09:31months probation.
01:09:32On the 16th of November 1969 at West London Magistrates Court, he was again convicted of theft and received three
01:09:39months' imprisonment, which was suspended for 12 months.
01:09:46You're just going to sit there and let the lad fry?
01:09:48It's out of my hands.
01:09:50He's not my pastoral responsibility any longer.
01:09:52Out of hell with your Parsons etiquette.
01:09:54They're going to send him to prison, can't you see that?
01:09:56Get up, damn you, and tell them.
01:09:58I already have.
01:10:24I have to go or I'll be in trouble.
01:10:26Pop round to see me sometime, we might still be able to do something.
01:10:33There's nothing to stop you from saying something.
01:10:36It might even carry more weight.
01:10:40David Williams, you were welcomed by this community, accepted into the family of a church, and placed in a position
01:10:48of trust, which you have chosen to betray.
01:10:52You say that you gave these goods to a lady you felt had a need for them.
01:10:57This lady cannot be traced.
01:11:00Yet if she were, it would not affect the judgment of the court.
01:11:03For how you disposed of the goods does not alter the fact that you misappropriated them in the first place.
01:11:09You're already under a suspended sentence of three months.
01:11:13This will automatically be implemented.
01:11:16With an additional three months' imprisonment for today's conviction, making a total of six months.
01:11:23Right, strip off.
01:11:29Excuse me, sir, but...
01:11:30Shut up.
01:12:05Shut up.
01:12:08با potencial fits bardzo Zo자

01:12:33And to the weary rest

01:12:48now.
