00:00During times of oil price hikes and the uptake in the prices of essentials and prime commodities,
00:05certain unscrupulous retailers or distributors come out of the woodwork to exploit the poor,
00:11unknowing, and hamless consumers through overcharging and price gouging.
00:16To deter such repulsive practices, the president today paid a visit to a public market in San Juan City
00:22to check for compliance on the one-month price freeze on basic goods and essentials
00:27as our Clay Zell Pardilla reports.
00:32President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. inspected today the supply and prices of basic goods.
00:39At the Agora Market in San Juan City, the chief executive made rounds through stalls selling rice, vegetables, and meat.
00:47This comes two weeks after the implementation of big-time fuel price hikes.
01:16sinusundan.
01:16According to the Department of Trade and Industry, manufacturers have committed to freeze prices of basic goods such as coffee,
01:24noodles, and canned products.
01:26At least for the next 30 days, wala po tayong price increase for basic necessities and prime commodities.
01:32So there's no need for people to panic.
01:35We can't guarantee because of the worldwide crisis that's happening now that's beyond our control.
01:41Consumers, however, are already feeling the strain on their budgets, especially on rice.
02:09The Department of Agriculture says imported rice should only range between 45 to 48 pesos per kilo.
02:17But monitoring shows, some retailers are selling it for as much as 58 pesos per kilo.
02:31The Agriculture Department has already recommended to President Marcos Jr. the imposition of a price cap on imported rice.
02:39Under the Price Act, violators of price caps may face imprisonment and fines.
02:45Definitely may namamantalaan the price of imported rice should not go beyond 50.
02:50The DA is also closely monitoring vegetable prices as fuel and fertilizer costs continue to drive production and transport expenses.
03:11Para maparating nga yung ating mga produce to the market.
03:14Kung masyado mataas at mahirapan ng consumer, we might need to do something with the prices.
03:29The government assured the public it will continue to balance market stability and consumer protection as global pressures on prices
03:37persist.
03:39Kaleizang Pardilia from the National TV Network for a New and Better Philippines.
