00:00And when I went on the Haunted Mansion ride when I was young, I was like 12, they kind
00:05of presented it like, well maybe, maybe it's fun and maybe it's not so bad and maybe they're
00:11not so scary.
00:12All the other kids are crying, terrified, and you're just like, this is great, I love
00:15it.
00:15Yes.
00:18If we do nothing, everything on this planet will go extinct, including us.
00:28Hi, I'm Alex from Enemy, and today I'm joined by an actor who's played a getaway driver,
00:33a jazz pianist, a private investigator, a plastic doll, and now an astronaut, it's the
00:38man of many faces, Ryan Gosling.
00:40Wow.
00:41Well, when you put it like that.
00:43First things first, about the karaoke scene.
00:46Yeah.
00:46How gutted were you that Sandra got to sing Harry Styles and you had to watch from the
00:50sidelines?
00:50Oh my God, I was so relieved.
00:55No, that's, I'm glad you're asking about that, that's one of my favorite stories about
00:58the film because, you know, that wasn't in the script.
01:02Oh really?
01:02And we had karaoke in the background, but it was just like, the scene was like a party
01:08scene and people were singing like scorpions in the background or something, it was sick.
01:13But we were on an aircraft carrier and Sandra Hewler's dressing room was down the hall from
01:17me and I heard her singing.
01:18And I came in and I was like, can you, you can sing like that?
01:23She was like, yeah.
01:24And I said, well, can you sing in this karaoke scene?
01:27And she was like, I don't, you know, I don't think so.
01:30And I said, like, I begged.
01:31I, well, I had learned that she had just done this, like, I don't know, PJ Harvey.
01:36Oh yeah.
01:37Musical.
01:37I knew it had to be in the film.
01:39I begged.
01:40She came in with Harry Styles.
01:42She chose that one.
01:43She chose that song.
01:44She said, this is the only song I'll sing.
01:46Because it fit with the overall.
01:47So she just, she knew.
01:49And we were like, could we do another one that's also like, maybe easier to clear?
01:55You know?
01:56That sounds expensive.
01:58And she was like, yeah, that was my producer hat.
02:01And she was like, no, this, this is it.
02:02And then when she sang it, it was like, it just devastated all of us.
02:05And we knew and it's become the best scene in the movie.
02:08And it's also became the anthem of the film.
02:10Why is a schoolteacher in space?
02:12Oh.
02:13Nope.
02:13Why is a schoolteacher in space?
02:16Try this.
02:17I am Rocky.
02:19I like.
02:20Enemies Music Magazine, if you didn't know.
02:23And we wouldn't be us if we didn't also try and dive into your musical history.
02:26Okay.
02:27And your gothic spooky indie band, Dead Man's Bones.
02:29Oh, yeah.
02:30Which we love.
02:31Well, you know about that, huh?
02:32Yeah, yeah, of course, yeah.
02:33It's 180,000 monthly listeners on Spotify still, nearly 20 years later.
02:37That's cool.
02:38Yeah.
02:38So I've got some facts about the band here that I would love to tell me if they are true
02:43or not.
02:44Okay.
02:44It's been a while and, you know, things circulate on the internet.
02:47Things change.
02:48Okay.
02:48The first one is that you formed in 2007 with Zack Shields, of course.
02:54After bonding over your shared love for the Haunted Mansion Disneyland ride.
02:58Yeah.
02:58That's true.
02:59That's true.
03:00Where did that come from?
03:01Well, I worked at Disney when I was a kid.
03:04Yeah, yeah, yeah.
03:05And I also had like, this is not, I don't believe this is true, but my parents felt or my
03:11mom felt our house was haunted when we were kids.
03:14So we moved because of that.
03:16She also liked to hang out in graveyards and like read tombstones and then do the genealogy of these people.
03:24So like I hung out in, you know, these graveyards with her at times.
03:28Yeah.
03:28And so all of that created a sense of like, you know, a bit of a fear of the undead.
03:35And when I went on the Haunted Mansion ride when I was young, I was like 12, they kind of
03:41presented it like, well, maybe, maybe it's fun and maybe it's not so bad.
03:46And maybe they're not so scary.
03:48I've just got this image of you like as a kid on there.
03:50All the other kids are crying, terrified.
03:52And you're just like, this is great.
03:53I love it.
03:53Yes.
03:56So it just like the way that they presented it was really, it just clicked something for me.
04:03So I always loved that ride.
04:05And I like just Disney's kind of approach to spooky things like Skeleton Symphony and all that.
04:10They had like a kind of the old mill.
04:13There's just like an angle that they have on it that's very, I think, unique.
04:19Just to give credit to Tim Anderson, who was the producer of the record, who was in a band called
04:23I'm a Robot.
04:24Yes.
04:25I was at a party that he was DJing and he was mixing in Haunted Mansion record into the stuff
04:32he was DJing.
04:33And I went up to him and I was like, that's the coolest thing I've ever heard.
04:36Can we make a record together that sounds like that?
04:39And then, and that's, yeah.
04:41And he was like, yes, but get off the booth, please.
04:44The next one I've got is, you performed under the name Baby Goose, which I'm guessing is to do with
04:49your surname, but that's not true.
04:50That is not true.
04:51Oh, really?
04:52No.
04:52Debunked here on NME.
04:53Yeah.
04:54Next one, you and Zach played all the instruments on the album, even if you've never played them before.
04:59Yeah.
05:00I think that's true, but not true.
05:02I'm sure we had some people come in and help, like, make it actually work.
05:08But the goal was, let's play things that we don't know how to play and figure, you know.
05:12There was a quality to trying to find it.
05:16Yeah.
05:17Not knowing what you're doing.
05:17Yeah.
05:18That we liked.
05:20The last one is that the gigs you played were basically big Halloween parties where everyone was encouraged to dress
05:25up.
05:25Yeah.
05:26That was like, we didn't encourage them, but I think the record was sort of like, you know.
05:29And, but we, because we also played at like old churches and we just kept on theme with all of
05:37the venues.
05:38You did that video in the graveyard.
05:39Yeah, in the graveyard.
05:41Yeah.
05:41Did you know there's a guy who runs like a Halloween music kind of YouTube channel and he went and
05:48found the graveyard.
05:50Oh, really?
05:50And he's done like a whole long 15 minute short documentary where he goes around all the bits from it.
05:54About that Naaman Stone video?
05:56Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:57And there's also, I think that it ends in a theater, doesn't it?
06:00That video?
06:00Well, we shot that, that, I think we shot that one in LA.
06:04Oh, okay.
06:04Right.
06:05But it's closed now, the theater, unfortunately.
06:07Oh.
06:08You'll be devastated to know.
06:09Wow.
06:10Well, that's so cool.
06:14It is time go.
06:16I think you mean go time, pal.
06:19He always asked this, everyone gets to pick one, but what's an album that you always go back to and
06:25why?
06:25There's this one record that I love by an artist named Harry Thumbman.
06:30He designed synthesizers.
06:32Oh, wow.
06:32This is a fun fact.
06:34He made one hit called, I think it's Wonder Dog.
06:37And there's like barking is the theme and it was like kind of like a youth record or something.
06:42And Simon Cowell was Wonder Dog.
06:45He would wear the blue costume, the blue dog costume with a cape.
06:48And he would go to these like places and dance as Wonder Dog.
06:53It's a fun like YouTube dive.
06:56But anyway, the song is, it's like shouldn't be good, but it's so good because this guy Harry Thumbman is
07:00like a genius.
07:01And this record that he made is, it's a gem.
07:04It's such a great pick.
07:05And it also makes me understand your band so much more.
07:07Thanks for speaking to me.
07:08Yeah, thank you.
07:13I will not let Grace die.
07:21Rockies!
