00:27progress in the game since the last video
00:29that we took. I should hope so. We got melee,
00:32we got, you know,
00:34a whole bunch of new mechs in the game,
00:36new game systems at work,
00:37and we can't wait to show you. Cats and dogs living
00:39together. Also, we're
00:41playing each other here. Oh right, this
00:44is gonna be multiplayer.

01:49gameplay systems at work,
01:51but we are, since this is a video for you guys,

01:54assuming a base
01:56level of Battletech knowledge. Oh, good point.

03:46So one thing we talked a little bit about
03:48in our past Kickstarter updates,
03:49we have an initiative order that goes from five to one.
03:52So each round has five phases.
03:55High initiative mechs,
03:56dinnerly light mechs, like this Irby here,
03:59can act in phase four, mediums in three,
04:03heavies in two, and so on.
04:04The interesting thing about the initiative system
04:06is that any unit can also choose to reserve down.
04:09That's this button here.
04:11You can basically reserve all your units
04:13from phase four down to phase three, and so on.
04:15This becomes really interesting
04:16if you want to wait and see what your opponent does,
04:19like I just did.
04:19Like you just did?
04:21Let me show you what I'm going to do.
04:24What am I going to do?
04:26I'm going to do something really cool.
04:28Yeah, and also...
04:29So the initiative order also resets
04:31at the end of each round.
04:33So if you reserve a light mech
04:34all the way down to one, for example,
04:36you can act with it
04:37and then act immediately again in phase four.
04:39So there are some temporal advantages too.

05:45So Mitch has sprinted into the thick of it
05:48with a centurion.

05:50When you sprint,
05:52that's an evasive move,
05:53and Mike will explain what that is right now.
05:55Yeah, so evasive units have a 50% chance
05:57to dodge all attacks.
05:59This is a mechanic that came out
06:01of some of our combat prototyping
06:03over the last several months.
06:05We were taking our combat engine
06:06and just trying to spend a lot of time
06:09playing combat in-house, in the office,
06:12and play multiplayer against each other,
06:14and try to find ways to push and pull
06:17on some of the core ideas of Battletech.
06:21That's exactly right.
06:22And so here, by moving evasively,
06:25he's made himself a harder target,
06:27and now I've got ways to counter that.
06:30Should I so choose?
06:32I've made myself a harder target,
06:34but one of the ways I did that
06:35was by not firing that round.
06:38Yes.
06:39So you've got to move further too.
06:41Yeah, of course.

07:01Now, forest provides light cover,
07:05which prevents 25% of incoming damage.
07:11Now, that prevents that incoming damage,
07:14but only from the front and the sides, correct?
07:17If I flanked you, I'd still give it full damage.

07:21So our defensive options in the game...
07:27So there's different ways to play defensively.
07:29So you saw one...
07:31I wouldn't know what those are.
07:33Well, I mean, sprinting is a way to be evasive.
07:36It is just easily countered.
07:38So basically, the centurion's on the move,
07:41so it's much harder to hit.
07:42However, I can counter that if I wanted to.
07:44I've got the sensor lock ability here.
07:46Conveniently on my Jenner.
07:47I swear we didn't stage this.
07:50Oh, yeah.
07:50And so I could choose to basically get an active lock
07:54with Witness here with his sensor lock ability
07:58and negate Mitch's evasive bonus.
08:01But if you were to do that,
08:02you would give up fightering for this round.
08:04Correct.
08:05So you know what?

09:33So the health bar, by the way,
09:34is just the summary.
09:35You know, battle mechs have a whole bunch
09:36of different locations.
09:39And we aggregate that
09:41with some weighting
09:42towards the center sections
09:43to give you on the flag summary
09:45of how you're doing.
09:47Just to give you an added glance,
09:48you can drill into it.
09:49The structure turns orange
09:50once you start taking internal damage.
09:53And then the white is armor.
09:55And you can see all that
09:57on the doll of the mechkin.
10:00The paper doll.

10:04I don't know because you're an artist.
10:05The other thing that's cool
10:06is you can see if you mouse over,
10:08I assume that we're looking
10:09at my screen right now.
10:10If you mouse over,
10:11you can see exactly what's in
10:12each armor section.
10:14Like, for example,
10:14the PPC here is on the arm, etc.
10:18So in this case,
10:20the griffon here,
10:21this icon over to the right,
10:22signifies evasive.
10:25So I can roll over that on my screen
10:27and see that the griffon sprinted
10:29to take that high ground position.
10:31So he's harder to hit this time.
10:33Right.
10:33Which is my subtle way
10:34of counseling mech
10:36that he'd probably be better off
10:37shooting at my dinner.

12:26in Battle Tech.

12:27You know, I've dealt damage

12:33while the Centurion
12:34is fully exposed
12:36so that I can maximize
12:37my chance of scoring
12:38internal hits.
12:39Right.
12:40And just like in Battle Tech,
12:41the damage transfers,
12:43right inside as you go.
12:46So I'll take a minute here
12:47to explain our interface, too.
12:49You can see here
12:49this is plotting
12:50a jump parabola.
12:52We're also previewing,
12:54because I've clicked,
12:55we're previewing
12:55my potential firing arc.
12:58The shading basically represents
12:59this is my optimal range.
13:02Out here,
13:03the Griffon's LRM
13:05and PPC at least
13:06start to degrade
13:07or they switch
13:08into their long range range band
13:10and then this area
13:11appears inside minimum range.
13:14So here's inside minimum range
13:15for LRMs
13:17and here for the PPC.
13:18The other thing you'll notice
13:19is these dots,
13:21which are arranged
13:23perhaps in a somewhat
13:26hexagonal fashion.
13:28and so this,
13:29if you remember
13:30our Super Pre-Alpha video,
13:31we didn't have this.
13:32You could position everywhere.
13:36And I'm going to be the first
13:37to admit that
13:38sounded really cool in practice.
13:39In theory, I should say.
13:42Yeah, right.
13:42But this is another great example
13:43of something that we
13:44quickly reacted to
13:46as we played more and more games
13:48internally.
13:49I need less choices, please.

13:53So I'm actually going to...

14:14Now before Mike actually takes the shot,
14:17one other thing about
14:18our design process,
14:19our prototyping process.
14:21At Herbrain Schemes,
14:22is we don't do it.
14:23I've been at game companies
14:24where the game director,
14:26the lead designer,
14:27sort of comes down from the mountain
14:28with these two stone tablets.
14:30It's like,
14:31this is my game design.
14:32If you just execute exactly this,
14:34we win.
14:35And I've never seen
14:36that actually work.
14:38So instead,
14:38it's a very iterative process with us.
14:40I was going to say,
14:41I do my tablets on brick.
14:44Yeah.
14:45This one.
14:46Just throw them one at a time
14:47into the fray.
14:48And sometimes people
14:48throw them back
14:49and beat me in the head.
14:50You know?
14:51And so we do a very iterative thing.
14:53We play the game.
14:54It's like,
14:54gee, I wish we could do this.
14:55I wish we could do that.
14:56And that's the result
14:57that you're seeing.
14:57And then what happens
14:58is that when we do layer in things,
15:01like some of these defensive abilities
15:03we've been talking about,
15:05we're doing it to solve
15:06consistent problem statements
15:08that have been coming up.
15:10Actually,
15:10that's something that
15:11we've been using
15:12in a lot of our more recent
15:13design meetings is,
15:14okay,
15:15you know,
15:15it's time for feedback.
15:16what are our major problem statements
15:19in combat?
15:20What are the things
15:21we see happening
15:21that we'd like to improve upon?
15:23And rather than just saying
15:24the Irby sucks,
15:26we say,
15:26I am having a problem
15:28getting within range
15:29with the Irby.
15:30Perhaps it's speed is too
15:31and we didn't do that.
15:32And then Andrew says,
15:33what if I use four Irby's?
15:34Yeah.
15:36But that's nostalgic.
15:37Shoot me!
15:39Ow!
15:42I'll take it.
15:43That sucked.
15:45All right.
15:45You also notice
15:46this Unsteady Toast here.
15:48Oh!
15:49So when you do enough
15:50stability damage,
15:52you knock a unit Unsteady.
15:54A unit cannot become Unsteady
15:57and fall down
15:58on the same turn.
16:00But once you're Unsteady,
16:02you stop bleeding stability.
16:04So basically,
16:05if you're not Unsteady
16:06at the start of your turn,
16:07you can bleed down
16:08your stability damage.
16:09but if you are Unsteady,
16:11you have to actually
16:11take a Brace action
16:13instead of firing
16:14if you want to lose
16:16the Unsteady state.
16:17Otherwise,
16:17you can continue playing
16:18but you're going to be
16:19off balance
16:20and you're going to
16:20risk falling down.
16:22Now,
16:22while Mike was talking
16:24and talking and talking,
16:26I was attempting
16:27to make him Unsteady.
16:28You succeeded.
16:30Missile weapons
16:30are very helpful
16:31for making it
16:32Lasers don't do any impact.
16:34I mean,
16:34they're beams of light.

16:44can't make a mech
16:45Unsteady
16:46and then knock it down.
16:47Instead,
16:48make Unsteady
16:49with one mech
16:50and then with another one,
16:52you can attempt
16:53to knock it down.
16:54So there's a lot
16:54more combination play
16:56than in earlier
16:57prototypes that we had.
17:00It's much more
17:00chest-like now.

17:20the in-turn action.
17:21So
17:22if you end your turn
17:23without firing,
17:24you can basically
17:25brace to receive damage.
17:27So this kind of simulates
17:28it's like I'm ready
17:28to try to turn
17:30and reduce the effect
17:32of that incoming fire.
17:34And so
17:34what this does
17:35is that
17:35A,
17:36it makes you stable,
17:37you take half stability
17:38damage,
17:39and it also
17:40gives you 50%
17:42damage reduction.
17:43So it's pretty powerful.
17:44Now,
17:44Buckshot here
17:45has one of our
17:46higher level
17:47mech warrior abilities
17:49called Bulwark
17:50that actually gives her
17:51that when she
17:52remains stationary.
17:53So unlike other
17:54units on the field,
17:56she can just
17:57park out here
17:58in my Orion
18:00and shoot
18:01and gain that
18:02defensive bonus
18:03while doing so.
18:04And the cool thing
18:05about these mech
18:05warrior abilities,
18:06this is part of the fun
18:07here,
18:07is putting the right
18:08mech warrior
18:09in the right mech
18:10for the effect
18:10that you're looking for.
18:12And so all of these
18:13abilities work
18:14very differently
18:14depending on
18:16the mech,
18:16you know,
18:17your strategy
18:18for using them
18:18depends upon
18:19the mech you use.
18:20For example,
18:21I've got an ability
18:22called Precision Shot
18:23on one of my mechs
18:25that allows me
18:26to
18:27if I only fire
18:28one weapon
18:29it's more accurate.
18:30Just one.
18:31And it ignores
18:32defensive states
18:32like Grace
18:34and like Forest
18:35cover.
18:35As you'll see
18:36when I use it.
18:36Now shoot me!
18:38Alright,
18:39so one more thing
18:39I'll point out,
18:40I'm not optimizing
18:41my facing here
18:42because I've done
18:42the most damage
18:43to his left side.
18:44However,
18:45I'm shooting
18:46from the front
18:46so I'm still
18:47going to have a chance
18:48to roll damage
18:49on his side.
18:51Also,

21:29Knockdown is less penalizing because you can stand up and you can still move a little bit.
21:33You can just a shorter distance and still shoot.

21:36But both are kind of gnarly because called shots, uh...

21:42Very powerful in battle tech.
21:43Especially when you have things like this, uh...
21:45The center torso where the armor's already been stripped off.
21:48I did this for you.
21:49Now, I'm going to demo this, but I will caveat it with, uh...

21:53The knowledge that there's actually a bug we introduced a couple days ago.
21:58Where the called shot roll is not favoring what I click on.
22:02So, uh...
22:03If it doesn't work...

22:07So, the called shot...
