00:00Hi, my name is Pierre Tarnot, I'm creative director on Obsolver, and we're about to see some exclusive Obsolver gameplay.
00:09So Obsolver is an online action game with a focus on a very deep but accessible melee combat system.
00:16So the combat in Obsolver is inspired by actual martial arts, and we wanted to create a system that was
00:23deep but accessible,
00:24and in which players could create their own custom combat choreographies.
00:32What we're seeing here is a tutorial map in the game, so it's very early stage.
00:39The player has not been matchmaked with other players yet. The main part of the game is set in a
00:45small open world
00:45that is made of a dozen interconnected zones
00:50that the players can explore freely, and in which he is, he or she is, matchmaked with other players seamlessly.
00:59So as you explore the world, you will get to meet other people and build relationships with them.
01:05You can make friends, enemies, you can find mentors or students, a variety of relationships exist.
01:11And as we see here, sometimes you'll be walking in the world and suddenly somebody else is there.
01:19This, however, is a single-player tutorial because it's there to teach the player the basic game mechanics.
01:26So we wanted to do a combat system that is pretty accessible, so it's easy to pick up and play.
01:34It's a 3D real-time combat system, but we added enough layers of depth, as we'll see,
01:41to have an actual competitive PvP experience, because the end-game of Absolver is becoming the best Absolver
01:52and fighting others like you in PvP.
01:56So here we see that the special defense of that character.
02:01In Absolver, every player can choose a combat style,
02:04and each style has a different special ability.
02:08The combat style, this combat style, has the parry ability.
02:12So the character is about to parry, is able to parry attacks if he does it in the right timing,
02:18which I kind of messed up here, but we'll see it a bit later on.
02:24So that's one mechanic.
02:25Another which we saw earlier is what we call perfect attack.
02:29So when you nail your attacks, your excessive attacks in the right timing,
02:34the character will flash golden, which makes the attacks change faster and stun the enemy a bit longer.
02:39So that's what we're seeing here.
02:41It's really an incentive to be in the flow of combat.
02:45Another game mechanic we're seeing here is the feint,
02:48which is cancelling the build-up of an attack to trick your opponent into doing a feint.
02:54So that's this black ghost we can see at times.
02:57So this is especially useful against human opponents.
03:01Once you feint, you get into this high-level mind game,
03:04kind of tricking your opponent into doing a dodge or a parry.
03:10And that allows you to follow up really quickly with another attack while your enemy is recovering.
03:16So that's once you kind of get to know the attacks of your opponent,
03:20that is something that is very important to tackle.
03:25So now we're going to see something that is really the core of Absolver,
03:30which is the stances and the combat deck addition.
03:33The idea is, in Absolver you have four different stances, represented by this diamond.
03:40In each stance you have a sequence of up to three attacks,
03:44which you see on top and an alternative attack, which you see down.
03:49The idea is that every stance starts in one stance and goes into another one.
03:58So for instance, here, we're going to make a sequence of attack that starts left and that finishes front left.
04:06I can go into training board.
04:08I'm going to see that if I change these moves and I keep attacking, they loop on themselves.
04:16But I could go ahead and change that and decide that one stance actually goes to a different stance.
04:23Here, my two front stances both loop on themselves.
04:26But the idea is that any attack always changes smoothly with the attacks that follow.
04:34So everything is fluid, everything is dynamic and the action basically never stops.
04:41The same system works with weapons, so the player can pull out weapons as temporary bonuses.
04:49And when you take out a weapon, it's just a whole different combat deck that is now available to you.
04:55Weapons do more damages, but they can be temporarily disarmed.
05:01Bonuses, you can get disarmed as we just saw here.
05:04So pulling a weapon in combat usually gives an advantage to the player,
05:09but can also be dangerous if your enemy gets very offensive, disarms you and picks up your weapon.
05:18So now we're going to see another part of the game.
05:28Which is a bit later, we were changing characters.
05:31And we're going to focus now on the attack learning system,
05:36which is the core of how you will create your characters in Absolver.
05:43So in Absolver, as you explore the game world,
05:47you'll meet other enemies, whether they're NPCs or players.
05:51And when you fight somebody, whether it's an NPC or player,
05:54they attack you with an attack that you don't know.
05:57So you will learn that attack aggressively, which is what we're seeing here.
06:01Here I'm using the Absorb ability,
06:03which allows me to avoid being stunned or pushed back by an attack,
06:08and that allows me to counter-attack that way.
06:10So I do receive damages, but if I counter-attack, my damages are mitigated.
06:15And when I use my special ability on an attack, I'm going to learn it faster.
06:21So here I see that I've learned a bit out of six attacks.
06:26And as you fight different enemies,
06:28you will progressively learn more and more attacks.
06:33And what you want to do is,
06:35sometimes you don't want to beat an NPC right away,
06:39but rather try and use your special ability tactically in that NPC
06:43in order to learn their moves better.
06:47Another mechanic this ties on is a social relationship between mentor students.
06:52So what you can do when you meet another player
06:56is ask them to become your mentor.
06:58That way, that player will be able to teach you their combat style,
07:02and you'll be able to learn attacks faster than you would
07:05by fighting regular enemies.
07:13So here I'm trying to absorb the enemies attack, not to kill it right away.
07:18There we go.
07:19I've learned some of three different attacks.
07:23Now this character here seems a bit more dangerous,
07:26so I guess I'm going to be careful in the early stages of combat.
07:30Valid tactic is to get to know the moves of your opponent,
07:34and that way you'll be able to counter the opponent more efficiently.
07:38This enemy has a combat style that has avoid especially good,
07:42but my enemy can sidestep, duck under my attacks,
07:46he cannot hurry up or absorb,
07:49but he can certainly make these very short and fluid avoidance moves
07:54that allows them to follow up really fast and attack me.
08:00Every time my attack is a bit too predictable,
08:03the enemy ducks under it.
08:05So I've got to be careful here,
08:07maybe get some feints in,
08:09in order to get the edge in combat.
08:11Here I'm taking another stance,
08:14my back stance.
08:15I know that I have a low attack,
08:17that allows me to beat that enemy.
08:20The enemy hasn't picked up my sword,
08:22so I can go ahead and pick up that sword.
08:25My health is pretty low,
08:27so I'm going to heal up and keep on exploring that zone.
08:32We're not going to show too much of that zone here,
08:35but before we jump to PVP,
08:38we wanted to show a bit of the customization system of Absolver.
08:43The general principle is that
08:45every gear,
08:47every piece of equipment,
08:48and we've got nine different equipment categories in Absolver,
08:51every piece of equipment
08:54has specific parameters of weight and protection.
08:58and so you're kind of making that trade-off between a weight that slows you down
09:04and protection that mitigates damages,
09:09and sometimes gear protects you better against blunt damage,
09:15sometimes gear protects you better against cut damage,
09:18which is typically the damage that players get from weapons.
09:22So you're making these trade-offs as you equip,
09:25and all these equipment categories are fully compatible,
09:30so you're making gameplay choices as well as aesthetic choice,
09:34because the look of your character pretty much determines how others will perceive you,
09:40and so it's important in an online game to kind of create your persona
09:44and show others what your character represents.
09:52Okay, so now what we're going to see is some player versus player combat.
09:58What's important to note is
10:00there are two forms of PVP combat in the game.
10:03Either what we're seeing here,
10:05which is players who matchmake together in the world,
10:09and these players have decided to fight,
10:12but these players could actually have teamed up
10:15and go on into co-op PVE instead of fighting,
10:20but they chose to fight,
10:23and so here they are fighting.
10:25So we're going to see different moments of a variety of fights,
10:30and look at the tactics involved.
10:33So this was an earthquake tower.
10:36What you can see are the floating shards in the back of the characters
10:41allow them to use special weapons and powers.
10:45So you need shards to put out your weapon,
10:47but you can also use the shard to create a shockwave or other things.
10:54So when confronted with an enemy who is a weapon,
10:58the good tactic is to be very effective in order to try and disarm him,
11:02but that's not always possible.
11:09So we have two tactics of weapons.
11:12This here are the war gloves.
11:14The character can change on the fly between war gloves and swords,
11:17and as you can see he can also get disarmed again
11:22and my opponent can pick up his weapon.
11:33As we saw previously,
11:35it's very important to stay focused
11:37and keep these perfect attacks
11:40that make your character flesh golden
11:41because that's how you get faster edge in combat.
11:57Even though the moves that can be placed in the combat deck
12:00all belong to different combat styles,
12:03characters can choose to put in their combat deck moves of any style.
12:08So you can create something which is a mixed style
12:12based on different attacks.
12:16Some attacks have different properties.
12:19These attacks after blue can absorb attacks,
12:22some attacks can avoid,
12:23some attacks can hit drop.
12:25That was a nice parry done here,
12:26followed by a guard break attack.
12:30This is a guard break attack again.
12:33We see the character's hand flashing red,
12:35and he's a dummy.
12:37He picked up his war gloves,
12:39absorbing a few attacks,
12:41and then jumping right in.
12:42But the other enemy has pulled out a weapon,
12:46and so the odds have shifted again.
12:50This is a moonfike sword.
12:52It's a very fragile sword,
12:53so it can break pretty easily,
12:55but it inflicts heavy cut damage.
12:58But the opponent has pushed me back with a shockwave.
13:02Here we see a good use of the absorb power.
13:11Sometimes the fight takes place near cliffs or precipice,
13:16and this creates a combat modifier because you cannot dodge in that direction.
13:21some PvP maps exclusively focus on dangerous environments in which players may fall.
13:30That was a weapon break,
13:32followed up by that big absorb haymaker punch.
13:39That finishes up the enemy.
13:43So even if an enemy is dominating,
13:46as we can see here,
13:49with a succession of absorbs,
13:52you can always chain your attacks faster,
13:55and if the enemy makes just one mistake,
13:59you can always follow up and pick up in combat.
14:05The altar here is red because the characters cannot interact with an altar when a fight is going on.
14:14And there we go.
14:15Weapon is picked up,
14:16and now the powers have shifted.
14:21It's very important to be able to use your special ability in the right timing.
14:29This move inspired by Capoeira,
14:31it's a very powerful kick.
14:33He pushes me away.
14:35So this will finish it that way.
14:41So what we see here are combats that take place in the worlds.
14:46But, as mentioned previously,
14:50some combats take place into dedicated PvP areas.
14:54So, from the game world,
14:57the player will be able to access special PvP game modes.
15:01So there is of course the 1 vs 1 duel,
15:03which currently is a best of 5 mechanic.
15:06But there is also 3 vs 3 game modes.
15:11And this concludes our demo.
