If anybody can turn Justin Fields into a pocket passer it's Andy Reid. The Morning Shift discusses Fields' move to Kansas City.
Transcript
00:00Justin Fields has been traded from the Jets to the Chiefs.
00:03Jets will get a 2027 sixth round pick,
00:06and Justin will be the backup QB for Patrick Mahomes.
00:09Yeah, it's good for him to get out of New York
00:11because I saw him in the tunnel after the game that we played up there,
00:18and I felt genuinely bad for him because I know he just was not,
00:23you know, that was a bad team.
00:25Obviously, they had won, but it was a bad situation.
00:28If anybody could turn Justin Fields into a better pocket passer,
00:33a better quarterback to see the field, it would be Andy Reid and with Mahomes.
00:36But I think he's going there to be the backup.
00:39You know, it's funny because Mahomes is expected to be back for the start of the season.
00:44He said that that's his goal, and everybody believes him
00:47when he got hurt after Michael Penix.
00:49Now, he's got two less knee surgeries than Penix that we know of,
00:52but the reality is I'm not sure if he'll play other than maybe in the preseason,
00:58but at least he gets to go to a good organization.
01:00And I think this is probably his lot in life now.
01:04He's had three shots at being a starter.
01:06I think this is what – or three shots for three teams,
01:10and I think this is where he's at now in his career.
01:13I tend to agree with that.
01:15There's a couple things that popped in mind when I saw this.
01:18First and foremost, yesterday we talked a little bit about
01:20the players that signed under Jeff Ulbrich,
01:23and can those guys get the Falcons back to the sack mark?
01:27You know, we were talking yesterday about Ojolari and Christian Miller,
01:31and can Jeff Ulbrich find a way to get back into the high 40s, low 50s, and sack total?
01:37And I said yesterday on the show, talking about Jeff Ulbrich's defense,
01:40like, is it the scheme?
01:43Like, can we start looking at it going, hey, we're going to plug players in here,
01:46and they're going to be able to do different things?
01:47We're getting ready to find that out, I think, to an extent.
01:50But that's the way the Chiefs go about things, right?
01:52And I think a lot of people look at this and go, oh, man.
01:55No other team could have signed Justin Fields and everybody say,
01:57oh, man, that's a good landing spot for him.
02:00Like, you signed the Chiefs, and all of a sudden you're like,
02:02dude, what a great landing spot for him.
02:04You know what I mean?
02:04Like, they're going to do different things with him
02:06that you wouldn't have expected.
02:07And they do the same thing on the defensive side of the ball,
02:09where they trade star players or get rid of star players,
02:12and they bring in other guys, and they just work in the scheme
02:15because they fit exactly what they want to do.
02:17Yeah.
02:18And I think the most part is you have the two most –
02:20look, he's going to be with Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid.
02:23And even if Mahomes is not ready, right?
02:25Like, he has Mahomes.
02:26And B'Enemy, too.
02:27And B'Enemy back.
02:28B'Enemy is back.
02:29But you have him in your ear, and you have Andy Reid, who is –
02:33look what Andy Reid did for Michael Vick.
02:37And he helped Michael Vick have a little two-year run
02:41that was pretty incredible for Mike.
02:43People didn't think he'd get back to that level.
02:44And he did.
02:45Yeah.
02:45So, it's more about the Andy Reid, the front office, the Steve Spagnuolo over there,
02:54and Patrick Mahomes and anything else.
02:56You have, like, the right people running the right things.
03:02Exactly.
03:03And the point I was trying to make is that we've got to stop focusing on the star players
03:07being brought in here and start focusing on whether or not these coaches
03:11and the system that are in place can produce that talent that's going to be coveted elsewhere.
03:16That's exactly how Kansas City has operated in this dynasty that they've had.
03:19And up until this past season, they've had a ton of success with it.
03:23But I am so excited.
03:25Just in – like, when I was thinking about the Justin Fields thing yesterday, I'm like,
03:28God, I hope we can find that at least on one side of the ball here in Atlanta.
03:31Well, I'm sure there were a lot of layers to Justin Fields' decision,
03:34but I would think a piece of it would be getting away from Woody Johnson
03:39with him openly criticizing him last year.
03:42Yeah.
03:42That's crazy.
03:43Well, that organization wishes they could get –
03:45I think everybody in the organization other than the Johnson family wishes
03:48they could get away from Woody, and maybe they do too.
03:50It's been a debacle.
03:51The Jets are paying a good chunk of his salary, I believe, all but, like, $3 million.
03:55So, it worked out.
03:57I know they moved some money around to get Geno to come
03:59and then, you know, push some more money outwards for Justin Fields.
04:02Yeah, and I'm curious if they sign him to another year just to stretch money out more.
04:06I mean, they have – I think they have some decent cap
04:08because they made some moves, but –
04:11Jeremy McNichols has agreed to a one-year deal with the Commanders.
04:15This is – I mean, it is what it is.
04:17You know, I don't know what the Commanders are going to be this season.
04:20Really don't.
04:21It's a team that was so good two years ago and went away from the Super Bowl,
04:25but they're doing a lot of things on the back of Jaden Daniels,
04:28and all of a sudden he's gone this past year, and they look less than stellar.
04:31We saw it here with our own two eyes when Marcus Mariota started
04:34inside of Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
04:36So, is it a good move?
04:37Could be.
04:38I just don't – you don't ever know.
04:39They seem to be kind of stockpiling a good, you know, competition at that spot.
04:46Speaking of them, would you take Brian Robinson?
04:49I don't know if he's signed yet back with anybody.
04:53I – no.
04:55Because he's a former Washington player.
04:56That's why I asked.
04:57Yeah, he is, and he got traded to, what, San Francisco?
04:59Yeah.
05:00He is one of those guys that I think needs a head of steam,
05:04much in the way that I talked about Tyler Algier.
05:06Like, I think they're good players, but I think they need a head of steam.
05:08I think somebody in the backfield, if we're going to run more pulling guard
05:12slash gap scheme type of stuff, you need somebody that can stop
05:16and start very quickly.
05:17And that's what I'd be looking for.
05:18That's what I'd be trying to get to in a running back.
05:20The 49ers and Christian Kirk have agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $6 million.
05:26Isn't that another – that's another situation, just like the fields,
05:28where you look at it and go, that could work out good for him, man.
05:32Like, I know he's had his bumps and bruises,
05:33but going into that situation as a skill player, that could work out really well.
05:37I thought he had some good moments in Houston, right?
05:40Sure.
05:40Yeah, I think – look, I don't question anything that John Lynch and Kyle do
05:47for the most part.
05:48They understand what they do, and it's just like Mike said,
05:55it's another one where it's a plug-in.
05:56You plug in – that's – you're not – you're going into their system,
06:00and you're doing things their way, and that's – it's kind of known at certain places
06:04that you come here and do things our way, and it works, and you shut up,
06:08and you do it our way because it works, and if you don't, you're gone.
06:12Brandon Ayoub.
06:13If you had a chance to do an internship with one head coach in the NFL,
06:19I think mine would be Kyle Shanahan.
06:22I would love to know.
06:24Sean McVay would probably be a close runner-up.
06:26I'd love to know the way they go about their daily bases as coaches
06:29and how they install these plays.
06:32I'd be interested in one with Andy Reid because he eats a lot of cheeseburgers,
06:35and I like cheeseburgers too.
06:37Touche.
06:37Touche.
06:38Probably not be a good marriage for us if we were in the same building.
06:41I could not only eat cheeseburgers but learn – also learn a lot.
06:45There's no – there's not a wrong – you didn't miss, though.
06:49It'd probably be Sean because he feels like a – for one, we could kind of connect
06:55on things in Georgia, growing up in Georgia, but also he seems a little bit more
06:59like people person than Kyle.
07:02Kyle is –
07:02Could be, yeah.
07:03Kyle is – I like Kyle.
07:04I was around Kyle for two years, but he's –
07:07Definitely more all business than McVay.
07:09Yes, very much more all business.
