02:25And she was separated from her own mother when she was maybe 14 or 15,
02:30and she never got to see her again.
02:32And she could never go back to Poland.
02:34After the camps were liberated,
02:36her family was one of those families that was getting sent to the Gulag.
02:40So, she was terrified to go to another camp.
02:45So, she had the refugee experience and she cherished Poland.
02:51And she tried to give us the best of her Polish roots.
02:56The traditions, the faith, the songs, the music, the art, the imagination,
03:04the love of books, very important to her.
03:06A person who goes through that experience and they lose everything,
03:11they don't get comfortable with things.
03:16They don't want things.
03:17They want what's in their head.
03:19And that's what she tried to give her children.
03:21What's in your head is what matters.
03:24So few people in the United States know anything about these kinds of women.
03:29The kind of women that Arena Sandler was.
03:32And the kind of other women that she worked with during the war.
03:35And I wanted to celebrate them.
03:38I wanted people to know more about them.
03:40I also felt tremendous compassion for the plight of Jewish people in Poland.
03:47And I wanted that story told as well.
03:49And today we're seeing the Polish women doing it all over again.
03:54And I'm telling you the world really, the world admires it.
04:00When they see those pictures of the strollers at the train stations
04:04and the way the Polish families are taking in Ukrainian refugees.
04:08My mother was a refugee.
04:10So I know how horrible that experience is and how grateful refugees are for any act of kindness.
04:18And I'm so proud of these women in this country that are doing this work.
04:23And I'm so proud of Arena Sandler.
04:26And I hope that women will teach their daughters her story.
04:30And that more and more women will be inspired by it.
04:35And the work of her and her co-workers to continue that tradition.
