00:07Welcome to FMTV. My name is Joe Tomlinson. Match day, the most important day of the week. To managers, it's
00:16either the best or the worst day, depending on the result.
00:20In Football Manager 2018, there are a number of innovations that make match days more immersive and authentic, no matter
00:27what the result.
00:28Let's start with the match preview, which has been redesigned for this year. You'll notice that a lot of the
00:34information that was previously present has been made more graphical and greater prominence has been given to information directly relating
00:41to the match you're about to play.
00:43Part of your opposition scouting report has been brought into the preview too, so you can view their strengths and
00:49weaknesses just before you select your team.
00:52There's also a dedicated panel for your team's fixtures, which sits alongside the league table, league fixtures and media panels
01:00that already existed in the match preview.
01:03The match flow, the screens you visit before the match, have changed quite dramatically this year.
01:07For a start, you have a tactics meeting, which may happen the evening before the game, or may happen on
01:13the day of the match itself, depending on what level you're playing at.
01:17But once you're into the match day, this has changed too. With the new graphics engine in place, which we'll
01:23talk more about later, it gives us more possibilities to show what we call cutscenes.
01:28These could be players warming up in different ways, different stadium shots and some secrets we'll let you discover for
01:35yourself.
01:36Once your team for the match is confirmed and the team sheets are handed in, you'll see animated team sheets
01:41for each side before the match, so you can familiarise yourself with the opposition line-up ahead of kick-off,
01:48alongside some useful commentary from the pundits on what their thoughts are on the match ahead.
01:53Next, you're taken to the dressing room to conduct your team talk.
01:56This is now done in a more intuitive way than the previous system.
02:00The tone system has been retained, but there are more contextual team talk options than before, that often integrate statistics
02:07and data into what you tell the players before kick-off.
02:11Once you've talked to the team, you're presented with a summary of your squad's reactions to your comments.
02:16You can then speak directly to the different areas of your squad, defenders for example, and deliver a secondary message
02:23to them.
02:23You can also choose to talk to individual players. Their response is displayed underneath the overall squad's reaction.
02:31For those of you who'd prefer to let your assistant do the talking, the option exists to hand the team
02:35talk over to your assistant.
02:38During half-time and full-time team talks, stats and analysis from the match is displayed on rotation at the
02:44top of the screen.
02:45Then it's on to the pre-match tunnel interview, should a media source want to talk to you before the
02:50game.
02:51At half-time you receive a review of the first half's action including the match events, match stats and notable
02:57performers.
02:58This is updated at full-time and also includes a summary of the result by a pundit.
03:03The match interface for FM18 has also been redesigned. The scoreboard, match timeline and match events have been moved to
03:11the top of the screen to create a more efficient window in which to view the match action.
03:16Underneath these you'll notice four in-match tabs, pitch, tactics, analysis and updates.
03:23Obviously the pitch tab just shows the pitch view, but let's take a look at the other tabs in more
03:28detail.
03:28The tactics tab is where you make in-match changes including substitutions.
03:33There's a horizontal pitch so that it's quicker to swap players and change roles with the tactics panel on the
03:39right,
03:39allowing you to make deeper changes to your mentality and team shape or team and player instructions.
03:45Once you're done making changes just hit the confirm changes button to be taken back to the pitch view.
03:51The analysis tab shows you real-time analysis that enables you to make more informed tactical changes
03:57without having to drift far from the action.
03:59You'll see match stats, analysis of both teams including heat maps, player analysis on who's doing well and who needs
04:06to raise their game.
04:08On the right-hand side of the screen you can see any pertinent advice from your backroom staff about implementing
04:13this analysis into your tactics.
04:16The updates tab provides you with a look at the latest scores and news from other matches around the world.
04:21Away from the tabs you can also make match setting changes directly from the match screen.
04:26This year there are several customisable cameras that allow you to change their height and zoom
04:32as well as the new option to auto reverse the behind the goal camera.
04:36And there's a new widget for this year, player watch.
04:39This allows you to view an individual player's match statistics in isolation.
04:44Sticking with the changes to the match view, between highlights you'll see the new recent event screen
04:49that gives you a clear overview of the performances of both sets of players
04:54whilst the central panel focuses on the story of the match so far
04:58with match stats and the focus of each team's attack presented.
05:02Finally, shouts have been redesigned so that you can change your team's mentality and team shape
05:07in addition to communicating with your players from the touchline.
05:10So, I've kept you waiting long enough.
05:13A huge change with Football Manager 2018 is the introduction of a new graphics engine.
05:19For those of you that like tech speak, this now supports DirectX 11 on PC
05:23whereas the previous engine had only supported DirectX 9.
05:28The lighting within the engine and the textures of the pitch have been significantly enhanced
05:33to make the match action look better than ever
05:36and also makes it easier for the match view team at SI to make changes in the future.
05:41It's not just the background tech that has improved but the graphics have too.
05:46Our art team have worked closely with our sister studio at the Creative Assembly this year
05:50to improve the player models and stadiums.
05:53There is now more variation between one player to the next in the match engine.
05:58This affects how a player moves around the pitch and operates on the ball
06:02which leads to a more authentic portrayal of the players during a match as a result.
06:07Stadiums have been greatly improved too.
06:09They now look sharper with more features included in and around the stadium
06:13and there's more variety in the types of stadiums as well.
06:16You'll feel more of a difference between the size and scale of a 70,000 seater stadium and a 7
06:23,000 seater one.
06:24Also some of the cutscenes show the stadiums off so you'll be able to get a better view of where
06:29you play the matches.
06:31Ultimately the new graphics engine creates more opportunities for development
06:35and you can expect to see some exciting innovations to the match day experience over the next few years thanks
06:41to this work.
06:42Away from the new graphics engine there are hundreds of new motion captured animations
06:47with particular focus given to goalkeepers to ensure that they react and move in a more realistic way.
06:53Alongside new shots, controls, passes and celebrations also made possible with the help of CA and their motion capture studio
07:02directed by our own Match View team.
07:05Of course there are also lots of AI changes to the way the players behave on the pitch.
07:10We'll be providing some match engine videos in the run up to release so you can see some of these
07:15improvements for yourself.
07:17And after the game should you want to get the full analysis on the match from your data analyst,
07:22there are lots of additions on what is being analysed including spaghetti maps, clear cut chances, combined top pass table,
07:29multiple position data columns and a much improved heat map.
07:34That's just a glimpse at this year's match day experience, hopefully though it's enough to whet your appetite.
07:40You'll be able to see plenty more of the match engine in action ahead of the release of Football Manager
07:452018 on November the 10th.
