00:01Can you please stand up and state your outlet name?
00:08Hi, N'Jira Parkins with Tough Post.
00:11Congrats tonight on your wins.
00:12My question is about the film.
00:14Some audience conversations around one battle after another have pointed out the racial politics
00:21and the conversations around, you know, the portrayal of its black female characters.
00:26How do you respond to how people have interpreted and critiqued race in the film?
00:32Well, I know a little bit about that critique.
00:35I know that Tiana has talked about it a lot.
00:39I know that we have the portrayal of many different characters, in particular her character,
00:45who is so flawed and unfortunately makes decisions that are detrimental to the revolution that
00:52she's trying to fight.
00:53It's complicated.
00:55We always knew that we were trying to make something complicated.
00:59We knew that we weren't making something that was heroic and we needed to lean into that
01:04and we needed to own the fact that this woman was suffering not only from postpartum depression,
01:11but she had issues of her own that she hadn't really reconciled with.
01:17You know, it's a very dangerous thing when you start out and you want to change the world,
01:20but you start to kind of become selfish and you read your own reviews.
01:26That was our hero in Perfidia who becomes an antihero.
01:30The point of it is to set up the story of Willa, the next generation.
01:36What happens when your parents, who are damaged and have handed quite a difficult history to you,
01:46how do you manage that?
01:48That's our story and our story is in Chase and her evolution to, like I talked about,
01:56in terms of the generational aspect to try to do better.
02:00Thank you so much and congratulations.
