00:00We're here with fashion expert Melissa Rivers talking all about the best and not so best of
00:06the Oscars red carpet. Melissa, thank you so much for joining us again. I want to hear first of
00:18all your overall thoughts on this year's Oscars fashion. My overall thought of the show, which it
00:24was good. And I thought the fashion. I want to say it was good. Yeah, but it was good in
00:34the sense that nobody really there were very few big swings and misses. I think everybody
00:40looked really pretty. Obviously, there were some standouts. Yes. Okay, let's get into your
00:45personal standouts. I feel like we're probably aligned here. But go ahead.
00:49Roseburg. So good. So good. Saved the best for last. Never really seen her like that. I mean,
01:00a gasp worthy moment. Totally. She was amazing. Obviously, Tiana Taylor has saved the best for
01:08last. There's no one right now on the carpet who can work a look like her in Chanel. I mean,
01:16we haven't seen someone be able to work a dress like that since Jennifer Lopez. And she's having
01:25fun. Yes, I know. As is, Rose Byrne, they're enjoying it. And I think that comes through as
01:31well. Obviously, Jessie Buckley, my favorite by a mile of her whole season run. Not not just on her.
01:38Yes, on her. She was definitely one of my best dressed from last night. Like talk about saving
01:44the best for last. Yeah, totally. She came to win. She came dressed to win. Perfect from, you know,
01:51pretty shoulders, clean hair, tasteful jewelry. You know, it's all about the picture holding your
01:58Oscar. Thousand percent. Yeah, it was Chanel. It was the red and the pink. It just, it was perfect. And
02:07she knew she was going to win or figured she was going to win. And the whole dress was geared
02:12towards
02:13that. And it was all the right choices. Beautiful. I love those colors on her too.
02:17I love that we saw what I call vintage Gwyneth. Yes. So good. That was in Armani, the whole new
02:27team
02:28over there. And that's when we just love Gwyneth. It's just she walks in and she's just like,
02:32oh, hi. You know what I mean? I just threw this on. Yeah. Perfect white. I mean, it was just,
02:39it harkens back to when she wore the white cape dress. And just so sophisticated. What I loved
02:48about Gwyneth too, is that from the front, it was really crisp and clean and minimalist. And then
02:53when she turned, you saw it was slit all the way up both sides, which is also very her. It's
02:59like
02:59surprise sexy, but not in your face. She brought full Gwyneth. Anne Hathaway's dress was really pretty.
03:07I did not like the gloves. How did you feel about the belt? Because that's where it lost me a
03:12bit.
03:14You couldn't really see the belt from super far away. You only saw it close up.
03:21I loved it from far away. And then I saw the belt and I'm like, oh, but then they went
03:25to a wide shot
03:26again. I went, oh, you know, I think it was one of those things. But for me, I couldn't really
03:30get
03:30past the gloves. And I don't know why people are suddenly wearing gloves. It's just that particular
03:36dress. I felt like didn't need it. But obviously, Anna thought she did. So, you know,
03:43not going to argue with the boss. No, totally. I loved their little bit on stage. That was one
03:49of my favorite moments from the broadcast, for sure. I thought, of course, Leonardo DiCaprio.
03:54I mean, just you're not, as for the guys, no matter what you do, no matter how fashion you are,
04:01him and George Clooney, it's like, you're just not going to get past them.
04:03Mm-hmm. Old school classic dapper polish. Besides Anne Hathaway's gloves, were there any other looks
04:09that missed the mark for you for any reason? They didn't necessarily miss the mark. There were
04:18disappointments. Yes. For me. Elle Fanning. I can see that. Explain why. First of all,
04:24we've seen this look now all through awards season. I felt, I just felt she looked washed out.
04:32Mm-hmm. She loves a neutral, a pale neutral, and she's very fair. Exactly. And I just,
04:39and she's such a fashion girl. Mm-hmm. But I felt like she sort of worked the same look
04:45the entire awards season. And she's someone who can wear big fashion and fashion forward fashion.
04:55And I just felt like I wanted that moment from her. I wanted that big fashion moment.
05:00Mm-hmm. And the other one, Kirsten Dunst, who nine times out of 10 is wearing something that I look
05:05at
05:05and go, oh my God, that's something I would pick to wear. Yes. And she was wearing Celine, one of
05:11my favorite
05:11designers. And it just, to me, went wrong. I don't know if it was the proportions. I think that could
05:20have been it. It just, for me, it fell flat. Mm-hmm. Yeah, she's an interesting one. Because do you
05:26remember she wore this deep green Tom Ford dress earlier in awards season that I was just like,
05:31it's minimalist, but it's perfect. Like, she does that so well. And this was, yeah. It just like,
05:38didn't grab me either. Yeah. And normally she does the beautiful, the minimalist, remember the
05:43t-shirt. Yes. Like, she's always the one for me that I look at and go, I would love to
05:49wear that
05:50dress. Yeah, for sure. And this one was just a miss. How about some of the other men on the
05:58carpet?
05:58A lot of brooches. So many. We have, the brooches are back. Pedro Pascal in Chanel. I feel like we've
06:09seen him do this look before, but what everybody's talking about is, like, suddenly he showed up
06:13clean shaven, which was like, what? What was your feeling as someone who, you're a classicist when it
06:19comes to menswear, what did you think about him skipping a jacket on the carpet? Again, know if you
06:26can pull it off. Mm-hmm. And he has definitely planted the flag of, I'm a fashion guy. I think
06:32I'm pretty, I'm, I'm think we've seen enough of the brooches. I like the ones that just were single
06:37ones. Mm-hmm. Like, I feel like they've peaked. Mm-hmm. And how they all got through metal
06:43detectors is beyond me. What's the it menswear accent going to be next season? Is it going to
06:50be like cummerbund season or like, like best? Are they all going to go back to the traditional
06:55dress suit? Mm-hmm. Yeah. I'm here, I'm here for it. Ava DuVernay had a full-fledged fashion moment.
07:05Yes. And I'm not saying that she hasn't looked good in the past, but that was a moment with just
07:12the
07:13shoulders and the little tiny waist and the hair and the jewelry. It was a full fashion moment.
07:20There were some really good Louis Vuitton looks, hers included. Yes, she was Louis Vuitton. There
07:24was a lot of Louis Vuitton. Yeah. Emma Stone. Oh, yeah. What did you think? Because hers was a little
07:30bit polarizing, both for the color and the simplicity of it. I didn't have a problem with the color or
07:35the simplicity. I just didn't necessarily think it was an Oscar dress. Mm-hmm. That's fair. I could see
07:41that at SAG or Actors, what do we call it now, or Globes or any of the other 200 award
07:48shows in
07:49between? Mm-hmm. Um, I love the color and I love the dress. A little too simple. How about,
07:57um, I feel like this might have been one you liked too, Kate Hudson in Armani Privé. Love. I feel
08:03like
08:03she also, because all of the leading categories, the top categories were pretty tight this year,
08:09I feel like she could have also been dressed to win. Like, that was a very classic, elevated Hollywood
08:17moment. Um, I thought she looked amazing. I thought I, she, for me, stopped traffic at the
08:26Actor Awards. Yes. In the white with the cape and the this. That was one of my favorite looks on
08:33her
08:33in a long top. Mm-hmm. But the color was beautiful. She, the peplum, which is like the next big
08:39thing,
08:40we're starting to see peplum in the cold. Kidman had a peplum, their feathers, the whole thing.
08:43So I love the color. Mm-hmm. And I love the fashion, uh, forwardness of it. I don't think
08:50it was my favorite dress. Interesting. But she looks amazing. Correct. You know? Can't argue
08:56there. But for me personally, I wasn't going to get past the Actor Awards dress. I thought Zoe
09:01Saldana looked really pretty. Yes. Is it weird if I say I preferred this Saint Laurent to the one she
09:07won in last year? No, because they're both Saint Laurent, you know? Yeah. But again, this was a
09:11much more dialed back one. Yes. Because she wasn't a nominee. Demi Moore having a moment. Kathy Bates,
09:17best she's ever looked. She looks awesome. I loved that color on her. And it's not easy walking the
09:24carpet with all of these young, gorgeous. Yeah. You know, 20 feet tall, the whole thing. And I thought
09:31best she's ever looked. I like that a lot. Chanel had a big night. Really did. So many of my
09:37best
09:37dresses were Chanel. I was not shocked. That's not good to say. But like, yeah. No, because this is
09:44the, they just showed the first collection with the new designer. Right. Mathieu. Mathieu Blase
09:49today, last week, I think. And you cannot get anything in the stores. There's lines around
09:56the block. Yeah. It's all blowing up. And he won the red carpet just like he won Fashion Week.
