00:08Here's another developer update.
00:10This one's going to be awesome.
00:12I think we're finally ready to talk about some features
00:15that you guys have been requesting for a really long time.
00:18As I mentioned earlier in the year,
00:20we've been working on social features
00:21to really improve the gameplay experience
00:24for everybody in Overwatch.
00:26So we have two of those to talk about today.
00:28Now the first one is super exciting to me
00:32because we often talk about ways to punish players
00:36who are behaving poorly and it's not very exciting to a lot of us.
00:41I think more often than not,
00:43players are behaving in an awesome way in Overwatch
00:45and we just don't recognize them enough.
00:48So we're super excited to introduce a feature called Endorsements.
00:51The way Endorsements will work is when you're playing Overwatch
00:56after a match ends, you'll have the opportunity to look at players
01:00both on your team and the enemy team
01:02and recognize them for certain gameplay behaviors
01:06that you want to really show that they shined in that area.
01:10So there are three areas that you can endorse a player in.
01:14The first we call Sportsmanship.
01:16This is if they were being a really nice, respectful person.
01:20Maybe they said, you know,
01:21nice shot when you killed me, that was really awesome.
01:24I like the way you did that.
01:26Really just good sportsmanship being a positive influence
01:29on the battlefield.
01:31So you can recognize somebody for that.
01:33The next endorsement that you can give is for a good teammate.
01:37And now you can't give this to the enemy team.
01:39This one only applies to your team.
01:42Good teammate.
01:43You might recognize somebody for doing something along the lines of,
01:47you know, your team currently has a Hanzo on it.
01:50Your Hanzo player you think would be better off switching to another hero.
01:55And you say, hey, you know, instead of that Hanzo,
01:57I think we could really use Mei in this situation.
01:59And the person switches to Mei and then you win the match.
02:02And you sort of recognize that that person was a really good teammate.
02:05They switched to a role that was needed for the team at the time.
02:09and they did a really good thing.
02:12Or they respond in respectful ways when people are asking,
02:15you know, maybe Mercy, the Mercy player says,
02:18will you get to the edge so I can heal you?
02:20I need somebody to fly up to.
02:22And the person moves to the edge.
02:23So you can recognize somebody for being a really good teammate,
02:26playing the game as a team player in a very high and effective way.
02:31The final way that you can endorse someone,
02:34and this one is also only for your team, not for the enemy team,
02:38is called Shot Caller.
02:40Now what we think Shot Callers should be recognized for
02:43is those are the men and women who end up on our team,
02:46who end up telling the rest of us what to do
02:49in a very positive, respectful, and effective way.
02:53It's usually the person who says,
02:55okay guys, we're not going to all go in until our Zarya's ult is ready
03:00and Hanzo has his ult ready.
03:02Once I make the call, everybody move in,
03:05and we'll have a really successful take on that point.
03:09Or, hey, we should back out now.
03:11Our Mercy was just killed. Let's back out.
03:13It's the person who's calling the targets,
03:16calling when to go in and out of the match,
03:19and generally leading us on the battlefield.
03:21and we want those people to really be recognized as Shot Callers.
03:25So the endorsement system is going to be very public.
03:28You're going to get to see other players and how they're endorsed.
03:32So when you see other players, you're going to be able to recognize,
03:34wow, that person, a lot of my fellow Overwatch players have said,
03:38that person's a great teammate.
03:40So I know that I can expect a good experience out of them.
03:44The system will work in a few ways.
03:48It will make sure that you maintain that endorsement level,
03:53meaning that once you get to a certain high endorsement level,
03:56you don't just stay there forever.
03:57You kind of have to, you know, be recognized by other players more frequently.
04:02So there are mechanisms in place to make sure that somebody doesn't get to a good place
04:06and just stay there forever.
04:07It's that that person has been a good sportsman or shown good sportsmanship.
04:14It means that they've been a great Shot Caller for some period of time.
04:18So there's a decay system on it.
04:21Also, if you've been actioned in any way, silenced or suspended,
04:26you completely lose all endorsements altogether.
04:29You go back to square one and you pretty much have to start over.
04:33So we think the system will be great.
04:35There are some rewards in place.
04:37For example, you get a minor reward for endorsing other people.
04:41You can only endorse a very limited amount of people per match.
04:45So it's not something that you can just do to exploit for experience
04:49or something like that.
04:51And then also, people who hit high endorsement levels frequently,
04:57we will do these check-in moments where we will reward those people
05:01for being awesome at what they do.
05:03So that's endorsements. That's coming.
05:05We are super excited about it.
05:07We think it's going to have a big impact on showing the Overwatch community
05:10just how many awesome Overwatch players there are
05:13and how many positive moments are actually happening in the game.
05:16The next system has been long-awaited and long-demanded
05:21and that is looking for group.
05:23We put a lot of time and effort into designing and implementing this system.
05:28Our looking for group system will allow you to create a group
05:32to your exact specifications.
05:34And what I mean by that is if you're a very particular group leader
05:38and you want to insist on having two tanks, two damage, and two healers,
05:44you can restrict those roles in your group
05:47and you can even force the people playing those roles
05:51to only be able to play those roles.
05:53Of course, if you want a wide-open group
05:54where everybody can play whatever they want, you can do that as well.
05:58There are some other options within the looking for group system
06:02that should be interesting.
06:03Like, for example, if you want to say to people in your group,
06:06I really want everybody to have voice chat,
06:08so I'm going to say, you know, voice chat is required for my group.
06:11You can name your group whatever you want,
06:13so when it shows up on the list you can say to people,
06:16you know, I'm really trying to get to diamond and competitive
06:18and looking for other serious mature players to play with me
06:22or however you want to name it.
06:24You can put that in there to try to attract the other people
06:28who are looking for a similar experience as you are.
06:31The whole idea behind looking for group,
06:34like with our avoid as teammate feature we added a short while ago,
06:38is to give you more control over your gameplay experience.
06:42We think Overwatch is a team game
06:44and you always have to play with five other people,
06:48and we think you'll have a much better experience
06:51if you have some say in what the other people on your team
06:56are doing, what their sort of play behavior is,
06:59and if you have some input and interaction with them.
07:02So we think looking for group will be really awesome.
07:04and one thing to note about it is it's not a matchmaking system.
07:08When you go to look for a group,
07:10you're either creating a group and showing it to other players
07:13or you're browsing the list as somebody looking for the group
07:16and then committing to join that group.
07:19It's not automatically pulling players in
07:22and putting them into the system.
07:24That's what our basic matchmaking does right now
07:26when you click play on quick play or competitive
07:29or any of our arcade games.
07:31So keep that in mind.
07:33It's more of a system for finding each other
07:35than you go into the gameplay system.
07:38So that's looking for group.
07:39We think it will be awesome.
07:41Now a few minor housekeeping notes on the looking for group system.
07:45As I mentioned earlier,
07:47we have collapsed the offense and defense roles into damage.
07:51I don't know if you caught that when I said earlier
07:53that you can have tank damage and support.
07:56We're now limiting the game in terms of number of roles
08:00to only those three roles.
08:02So previously where we had heroes like Tracer
08:05who is considered an offense hero
08:07and Junkrat who is considered a defense hero,
08:11all of those heroes are now in the same role
08:13which is simply called damage.
08:15We think this greatly simplifies things.
08:18It will really help the looking for group system
08:20and we think it makes a lot of sense.
08:22And those roles were sort of arbitrary to begin with.
08:24It was just to help newer players figure out
08:27what the different heroes did.
08:29The other big change that's coming
08:32in regards to looking for group system
08:34is that player profiles,
08:37we will now give you control over who gets to see those.
08:40You can set it so your profile is private.
08:42You can set it so your profile is friends only.
08:45Or you can set it like it currently is right now
08:47which is to public.
08:49By default these will not be public moving forward.
08:52Again, our theme is give you control over your gameplay experience.
08:57We recognize that other players
08:59were sometimes giving us a hard time
09:01based on our player profile.
09:03We think you have the right to decide
09:05if you want people to see that or not.
09:08Now, it's a huge patch that's coming up.
09:10There's a major Symmetra rework happening.
09:13We're going to have a great description
09:15of all of Symmetra's new abilities
09:17and everything that's different about the hero.
09:20As has been mentioned before
09:21and some of you know, some of you don't,
09:23she is moving to the damage category.
09:25So please make sure to read that update.
09:28And also, major changes are happening
09:31to the Horizon Lunar Colony map.
09:33And we're going to go into great detail.
09:35We're going to post a complete description
09:37of the changes that are happening there as well.
09:40and we think you'll find those really interesting.
09:42For example, on Point B on Horizon Lunar Colony,
09:46you can no longer sort of attack
09:49from the Defender's spawn room
09:50within the safety of the healing zone
09:52like you were able to previously.
09:54We fixed that issue,
09:55but we've made some really big changes in the map.
09:58There's also some beautiful art
09:59and new lore in the map as well
10:01that we think you'll be really interested in.
10:04All in all, we think it's a great patch.
10:05These two major social systems
10:08we think will make Overwatch a much better experience.
10:12We have more social systems on the way.
10:14I hinted at this before.
10:16Not only are we going to deliver two
10:18early on in the summer,
10:19but we have another big feature coming later on
10:22either in the late summer or early fall.
10:26These features are brand new.
10:27I'm sure we're going to have to iterate on them a lot.
10:30Please speak up.
10:31Tell us what you like, what you don't like.
10:33We'll make changes as necessary.
10:35Thanks so much and we hope you enjoy the features.
