00:01Last month, Hello Games shocked the community
00:03when they announced that No Man's Sky was making its way to Xbox One,
00:07including an Xbox One X enhanced version
00:10of this ambitious space exploration and survival game.
00:14And now I'm joined by Sean from Hello Games
00:16to tell us what we've been missing
00:18and what we should expect from the game's arrival on Xbox One.
00:21Sean, welcome!
00:23I think it's fair to say that I never expected to be talking to you
00:25on an Xbox stage like this.
00:27Yeah, I snuck in, I dug a tunnel to get here.
00:30Good. Well, you're very welcome, mate.
00:32Now, listen, I'm just going to be cheeky
00:34and open up with when is No Man's Sky coming to Xbox One?
00:38Yeah, we haven't told anyone yet.
00:41So July 24th is when we're releasing No Man's Sky next.
00:45Amazing. Brilliant. There you go, July 24th.
00:47And my next potentially cheeky question is
00:51what's the story on multiplayer for No Man's Sky?
00:54Yeah, so this is exciting.
00:57And when No Man's Sky launches, July 24th,
01:01you're going to be able to play with your friends.
01:03Kind of a full multiplayer experience.
01:06Amazing.
01:07And this is something that, like,
01:10I wish we could have done sooner,
01:12but I'm so glad it's happening, right?
01:14We've been playtesting it in the studio for, like, the last six months.
01:19It's a really different experience.
01:21You know, No Man's Sky can be kind of, I guess, a bit mysterious,
01:26a bit weird at times, right?
01:29But, like, and also sometimes a little bit lonely, right?
01:34Because it's sci-fi, and I kind of love that side of it.
01:37But this is very different.
01:40It's more Battlestar.
01:41It's like Star Trek Away Team, right?
01:44It's fun and funny and emergent and kind of intense, right?
01:49So you can play with a bunch of your friends,
01:53like a small group of your friends can go exploring, right?
01:56Or you can just come across random strangers and other travelers.
02:01You can pair up together in a team and, like, just work together to survive.
02:08Or if you're that guy, you can go and kind of prey on other people, right?
02:14If that's your thing.
02:15That guy, yeah.
02:15Yeah, yeah.
02:16So, like, we've got base building as well.
02:20So you can build bases together.
02:22You can build everything from, like, tiny little shelters
02:24to, like, complex colonies, right?
02:27Spread across, like, multiple planets.
02:29And because it's all online and those are shared,
02:32other people can come and visit and find them.
02:35We've got, like, this guy's a very broad game.
02:38So we've got space as well.
02:40So dogfighting, you and your friends can be involved
02:44in kind of, like, big space battles.
02:46You can be a pirate or a wingman.
02:48And then there's something which I really love,
02:50which is a thing we added in one of our updates,
02:52which is exocraft and vehicles, right?
02:55So you can race those against your friends.
02:57You can build racetracks on, like, alien planets.
03:00Or even just lay down a little trail of, like,
03:02your favorite path or your kind of scenic route, right?
03:05And so I think this is, like, potential
03:09that everyone's always seen in No Man's Sky, right?
03:12It's something that, I don't know,
03:14it's a kind of game that myself and a lot of other people
03:19have always wanted to play in a multiplayer world, I think.
03:23and I'm just really excited to be able to do that.
03:25Great. Yeah, you've been through a lot with this game, right?
03:27I mean, does it feel now that you're getting to the point
03:29where you're really realizing the vision
03:31of what you always wanted from this experience?
03:34Yeah, it's interesting.
03:37Like, I think when we, you know,
03:39when we come to Xbox, which is a fun thing,
03:42where we've got a whole bunch of, like, updates
03:47over the last two years that we've been working on,
03:50including Next, and they really expand the game, right?
03:55No Man's Sky was always huge, right?
03:58It was crazily ambitious.
04:00Right.
04:00But, like, when I look at it,
04:04those updates have really kind of expanded
04:07and deepened every part of the game kind of thing.
04:10Yeah, and I think that's a really important point, right?
04:12Because especially Xbox fans and the Xbox community,
04:15they may not know No Man's Sky
04:17as well as some other communities, right?
04:19So tell us about what is exactly going to be
04:22in the Xbox version of the game
04:23that might be different from what people heard about in the past.
04:26Right.
04:26So when you play on Xbox,
04:31I mean, and I think this is an exciting thing for us
04:33as a developer,
04:34you always like, you know,
04:36sharing this thing that you've worked really hard on
04:38with other people.
04:40But for us in particular,
04:41it's interesting with Xbox
04:42because we get to make that first impression with people.
04:45We have a much broader and more expanded game.
04:50So when you play it,
04:51day one, you're playing that base,
04:54like, stupidly ambitious game
04:56that a small team was making.
04:58But you're also playing, like,
05:00four kind of pretty major updates,
05:02in, like, Pathfinder,
05:04Atlas Rises, Foundation,
05:06and now Next.
05:07Right.
05:08So tell us about Next.
05:09Well, actually, let's first of all,
05:11let's talk about some of the key things
05:12that are in those other four expansions,
05:14and then let's move on to Next.
05:15So what are, like,
05:16the biggest things that you've added
05:17since the game initially released?
05:19Yeah, I mean,
05:21No Man's Sky
05:23is something that we've been
05:24kind of working on
05:26and developing
05:28over the last while
05:29with these major updates.
05:31And the thing that's been really fun
05:32is kind of working with the community,
05:34and we want to do that more,
05:35kind of listening intently.
05:37So you've got, like, Foundation,
05:39which was our first update,
05:41and that brought base building.
05:42It brought kind of survival mode,
05:45creative mode.
05:46Suddenly you could buy frayers
05:48and things like that.
05:48You could start farming.
05:50And so that was, like,
05:53already No Man's Sky
05:54was something that people played
05:56for a long time.
05:58like our average playtime
05:59was really long,
06:00but Foundation kind of
06:01massively improved that, right,
06:04and went through the roof.
06:05Then we had Pathfinder,
06:06which brought vehicles.
06:09It also brought permadeath.
06:11You could expand base building
06:13a lot more.
06:14You could share them online
06:14and stuff like that.
06:16And that, for me,
06:18actually was loads of little things
06:20that we added in that update
06:21that made the game
06:23kind of much more fun, actually.
06:25just a lot slicker
06:27and things like that.
06:28And then most recently
06:29we had Atlas Rises.
06:30Atlas Rises was a huge update.
06:33It brought a mission
06:34and quest system.
06:35It brought, like,
06:3830 hours of story.
06:39It really changed the game
06:41and it got a really nice reception
06:43and a lot of people playing.
06:45and so that actually was the reason
06:47we kind of took a step back
06:49after that
06:49and just kind of went,
06:51all right,
06:51let's start working on Next,
06:53which is what we've been working on.
06:54Let's take a year
06:55and let's make it
06:56the game we want it to be, right?
06:58Let's just, you know,
06:59do the things we want.
07:01So when you come to Xbox One
07:02and you ship
07:03No Man's Sky Next as well,
07:05does it kind of feel like
07:06a bit of a reboot for the game
07:08for you and the team at Hello?
07:10Yeah, it's interesting.
07:11We've been working on this
07:13for two years in a way,
07:14like a year on Next
07:15and a year on updates previously
07:17that this all builds on top of, right?
07:19And that's a really cool thing
07:21and we're lucky
07:22that we have a community
07:25that cares really deeply
07:26about the game, you know?
07:28And so I get a real kick
07:30out of, like, working on updates
07:32and kind of feeding them
07:33and doing things
07:34that I know they'll enjoy.
07:35But, like, I don't know.
07:38You know, maybe one day
07:39I will feel that No Man's Sky
07:40has been, I don't know,
07:41like rebooted
07:42or it's kind of done
07:44and I can't think of anything else
07:46I want to do to it
07:46but I don't feel like that, actually.
07:48At the moment,
07:49I'm really enjoying
07:50what we're doing right now
07:51and there's so many things
07:53that I can kind of
07:54get excited about in the future.
07:57You know, this is...
07:57Tell us more about that.
07:58I mean, what's the vision,
07:59like, after you come to Xbox?
08:01You know, what's down the road
08:02for No Man's Sky?
08:03Well, I think that is...
08:06That's an interesting thing, right?
08:09I think we're good at, like,
08:11or I don't know if we're good.
08:13We're good at making games, right?
08:15We're definitely better at that
08:16than talking about it, right?
08:18And I think, you know,
08:20there's a real hunger
08:20in the community
08:21to know everything
08:22that we're doing
08:22and have a complete roadmap
08:24and stuff like that.
08:26But hopefully, you know,
08:28we will reward their patience
08:30of not having much info
08:31with just good, solid content, right?
08:35and we only like to talk about things
08:37when they are right,
08:38when we are super happy with them, right?
08:41When we know they can't possibly change.
08:43So, you know,
08:45I really like making games.
08:47I don't necessarily love
08:51talking about making games.
08:52I think you did a good job, Sean.
08:53Even though, you know,
08:54you guys are very nice.
08:57Mate, seriously,
08:58thank you so much
08:59for being on the show.
09:00Welcome to the Xbox community.
09:01It's wonderful to have you here.
09:02And will you come back
09:03and talk to us more
09:04about No Man's Sky down the line?
09:06Sure, maybe, yeah.
09:08Great, I'll take that
09:09as a firm yes.
09:11Thank you, mate.
09:12Pleasure, as always.
09:12We'll see you next time.
