00:00Mr. Jones owned a cotton plantation and many slaves.
00:05One day he was talking to the owner of the plantation next to his,
00:09and Mr. Jones was lamenting the fact that times were tough,
00:13he was having to work his slaves harder than ever,
00:16and was having trouble with some of them being disobedient or trying to run away.
00:21The other plantation owner said he knew someone who could help.
00:26Day One
00:28One day Mr. Jones called his slaves together so a man named Mr. Smith could talk to them.
00:35Before beginning, Mr. Smith whispered to Mr. Jones,
00:38Whatever I say, do not contradict me or interfere, and I promise you your slave troubles will end.
00:47My name is Mr. Smith, he said to the slaves,
00:50and this may be the happiest day of your lives.
00:53From today forward, you will no longer be slaves, but free men.
00:58Mr. Jones was so shocked he started to step forward, but Mr. Smith gestured for him to remain silent.
01:04He did, only because the other plantation owner had spoken so highly of Mr. Smith's skills.
01:11You are no longer the property of Mr. Jones, Mr. Smith continued.
01:22Now the slaves were all murmuring and looking at each other.
01:28Many were smiling, many were looking puzzled.
01:31In fact, you are now free to leave the plantation whenever you want, Mr. Smith said.
01:37However, since we are surrounded by other plantations,
01:40if you leave, some other plantation owner will likely claim you as his own the moment you set foot on
01:46his property.
01:47So I urge you not to risk your newfound freedom by doing something so foolish.
01:52Instead, I suggest that you stay here, no longer as slaves, but as willing participants,
01:58and part owners of this plantation.
02:01Yes, this is now your plantation.
02:04Mr. Jones bit his tongue to keep from objecting.
02:08For now, we might as well leave Mr. Jones in charge, said Mr. Smith,
02:13since he is the only one with any experience at running a plantation,
02:16which is quite a complicated thing to manage.
02:19But he will no longer be your master, but just another worker on the plantation.
02:24In fact, he will now be using his organizational and management skills to serve you.
02:31Whatever problems you may have had with him before, you are now all equals,
02:36and you need each other to make this work.
02:39If we all cooperate and work together, we can all reap the benefits together.
02:44In honor of this happy occasion, I present you this new symbol of togetherness and cooperation,
02:49this flag, which shall be the emblem of the new Free Jones Plantation.
02:54He held up the new flag, but most of those listening were still too amazed to respond.
03:00And this shall be our motto, Mr. Smith announced.
03:04We work together as free men for our mutual benefit,
03:08pledging our allegiance to the Jones Plantation,
03:11which stands for prosperity, liberty, and justice for all.
03:15To celebrate, everyone has the rest of the day off.
03:18Enjoy your freedom, do as you please,
03:21and be back here tomorrow morning, bright and early,
03:24so that we may begin work on this great and noble new endeavor as equal free men.
03:30Finally convinced that Mr. Smith was serious,
03:33the former slaves applauded and cheered.
03:37Day two.
03:40We all want this plantation to do well,
03:43Mr. Smith said at the beginning of the next meeting,
03:46so we can all share in the benefits.
03:48We all know that it takes a lot of effort to make a cotton plantation work.
03:53Just because you're all free doesn't mean you can stop working.
03:57In fact, since you're now working for yourselves,
03:59I expect you to work even harder than ever before,
04:03but now with pride and joy,
04:05knowing that you're working for yourselves.
04:08Of course, there still have to be rules.
04:10If everyone just does whatever he wants,
04:13the plantation won't produce anything.
04:15This experiment will fail, and we'll all starve.
04:19You should be thankful that Mr. Jones has agreed to stay on,
04:22to lend his knowledge and skills to this endeavor,
04:25and I trust you will all do your own part to make this work.
04:29Several of you have been chosen to act as project supervisors,
04:33to manage different aspects of the operation,
04:35to make sure everyone is doing his assigned job,
04:39to make sure that the rules are followed, and so on.
04:42The rest of you may head out to the fields
04:44to start your first day of work as free men.
04:49Day 3
04:51The next morning, Mr. Smith had a grim expression on his face
04:55as the daily meeting began.
04:58I have an unpleasant duty to do today, he said.
05:02Yesterday, Charles was caught keeping some of the cotton he picked,
05:06presumably to sell for his own personal profit.
05:09That is against the rules.
05:11That is stealing.
05:13For that, Charles must be punished.
05:15Two men tied Charles to the whipping post.
05:19I take no joy in this, Mr. Smith continued.
05:22But you must understand, if we do not maintain order,
05:26if we do not have rules that we all abide by,
05:28then the plantation will fail, and we will all suffer.
05:33The whip cracked against Charles' back.
05:36But if we all pitch in for the common good,
05:39then we can all prosper.
05:41Being free doesn't mean you should be selfish and greedy.
05:44We must each do our assigned duties and obey the rules,
05:48and then we can all benefit,
05:50and each of you will receive your appropriate share of the profits.
05:54A young man named Samuel stepped forward.
05:57But if you and Mr. Jones decide the rules and whip us if we disobey,
06:02how is that any different from what we had before?
06:05How can you say that, Mr. Smith asked.
06:08I'm shocked.
06:10You were a slave before, and now you're free.
06:13Things still need to be managed and organized by those best qualified to do so.
06:18Do you know how to run a plantation, Samuel?
06:21Well, no, he answered.
06:24But if we're free, why do we get no say in what the rules are and how things work?
06:30I'm surprised that you are in gratitude, Mr. Smith answered.
06:33None of you know how a plantation is run,
06:36so you're in no position to be making decisions about how things are done here.
06:40You don't seem to appreciate all the things that Mr. Jones provides for you,
06:45from protecting you from all the outside threats you know nothing about,
06:49those who would come here, capture and enslave you,
06:51if not for Mr. Jones' protection,
06:54to making sure that you all have food and housing,
06:57tools to work with,
06:58that you're cared for when sick and injured, and so on.
07:01There wouldn't be a plantation at all,
07:04no cotton to pick,
07:05no land to plant and harvest,
07:06if not for him.
07:08You should be grateful that he's made possible the level of comfort you now have.
07:13Your lives would be far worse if not for him.
07:16Nevertheless,
07:17as free and equal participants in this endeavor,
07:20from now on,
07:21at each meeting,
07:22any worker may have two minutes to ask questions,
07:25or voice suggestions,
07:26or complaints.
07:27With that,
07:29the workers all seemed satisfied,
07:31and headed out again to the fields,
07:34to pick the cotton.
07:37Day four.
07:40I have a big announcement,
07:42Mr. Smith said,
07:43as the daily meeting began.
07:45Mr. Jones' cousin is here,
07:47and not just to visit and see how our project is coming along,
07:51it has been decided that from now on,
07:53you will be deciding who will manage the plantation.
07:57Of course,
07:57this job can't be done by just anyone,
07:59but every three months,
08:01we will have a special meeting,
08:02at which all the workers will vote on whether we think Mr. Jones should run the plantation,
08:08or whether we think his cousin, Mr. Johnson,
08:11should run the plantation.
08:12That means that ultimately,
08:14you are in charge,
08:15because you will be deciding which man you want running things on your behalf.
08:20If you don't like the way things are being managed,
08:24you now have the power to change it.
08:27Amazed and pleased,
08:28the workers headed out again to the fields,
08:31to pick the cotton.
08:37Days passed,
08:39months passed,
08:40a year passed,
08:42and the plantation continued to operate as before.
08:46Sometimes Mr. Jones was in charge,
08:49sometimes Mr. Johnson was in charge,
08:51but the day-to-day routine stayed exactly the same.
08:56The workers worked hard,
08:58long hours every day,
09:00and still had little to show for it.
09:03Every day,
09:04the meeting would begin with them all reciting the Jones plantation motto,
09:09and we worked together as free men for our mutual benefit,
09:14pledging our allegiance to the Jones plantation,
09:17which stands for prosperity,
09:20liberty,
09:21and justice for all.
09:24One day,
09:24Mr. Smith announced,
09:26Samuel is asked to say a few words this morning,
09:29and whatever the rest of us may think of his ideas and opinions,
09:33we are all free here,
09:34and that means we are all allowed to speak our minds.
09:38So, Samuel,
09:39you have two minutes.
09:41Begin.
09:43Samuel stepped forward,
09:45looking scared.
09:47I was excited when all this started,
09:50he began,
09:50glancing nervously at Mr. Smith and Mr. Jones.
09:54But don't you all see what's happened here?
09:57Nothing's changed.
09:58We're all still slaves.
10:01There were grumbles of disagreement from the crowd.
10:05They tell us what to do and whip us if we don't.
10:08They still make all the rules and punish us if we disobey.
10:12They let us make suggestions and complain about things,
10:15but they never really change anything.
10:19They let us choose between Mr. Jones and Mr. Johnson,
10:22but what's the difference?
10:24The situation stays the same.
10:26We do all of the work and they take as much as they want
10:30and decide how much they'll let us keep.
10:32They live in luxury made rich by the cotton we pick.
10:37We do all the work and have to build our own huts,
10:40grow our own food,
10:41and take care of ourselves.
10:43They leave us just enough that we don't revolt or run away.
10:47This is not freedom.
10:49We're all still slaves.
10:51They've only changed the words they use,
10:54but nothing else has changed.
10:55They say we're all free and equal,
10:58but we're not.
10:59They command and we obey.
11:02That's not freedom.
11:03That's not equality.
11:05They say we're free to leave,
11:07but all that means is that we're free to be someone else's slave.
11:11Why should we work or obey the rules?
11:14We didn't agree to this.
11:16They made the system.
11:17They forced it on us.
11:19They control and rob us and call it freedom.
11:23They've deceived you into thinking that being able to choose which slave master you'll work for
11:28is the same as being free.
11:30It's not.
11:31Open your eyes.
11:33If you keep what you produce,
11:35they call it stealing.
11:37When they take what you produce,
11:39they call it sharing and fair distribution.
11:42Can't you see that this is all?
11:45Your time is up,
11:47Samuel.
11:48Mr. Smith announced calmly.
11:51At his gesture,
11:52two supervisors grabbed Samuel by the arms and led him to the whipping post.
11:57I'm sorry,
11:58Samuel,
11:59but you've broken the rules.
12:01There are rules against encouraging others not to work and encouraging others to break the rules.
12:07You're only hurting all of us with your discontentment and your complaining and your disobedience.
12:12The whip fell and Samuel let out a grunt.
12:16Without rules,
12:18without order,
12:19all would be lost.
12:21Without law,
12:22there would be chaos.
12:23We can't just behave as wild animals,
12:25each doing whatever he pleases.
12:27We must all follow the plan and all do our duty for the betterment of everyone.
12:33And those who do not must be punished.
12:37The whip fell again and blood flowed freely from Samuel's back.
12:44Samuel,
12:44it is you who are stealing from the others.
12:47When you don't do your signed work,
12:49you are making more work for others.
12:51When you disobey the rules,
12:53it is you who are endangering the future of everyone else here.
12:57You are the thief.
12:58You are the criminal.
13:00You are the one trying to destroy the arrangement that keeps us all safe and prosperous.
13:06At every lash of the whip,
13:08the other workers cheered louder and louder,
13:11some yelling curses at Samuel.
13:14Being spoiled and selfish,
13:16you complain about everything,
13:18talking as if you're oppressed.
13:19But you are the one ruining things.
13:21You are the one keeping us from being all we could be.
13:25It is your greed and your rebelliousness that is hurting all of us.
13:29They all play by the rules,
13:31Mr. Smith said,
13:32gesturing at the others.
13:34What makes you think that you don't have to?
13:37You think you're above the law?
13:39There were loud yells of agreement as the whip fell again.
13:43We must maintain order,
13:45Mr. Smith proclaimed,
13:47to make this plantation great,
13:49to make it so that we can all be happy and prosperous.
13:52To have the society we want,
13:54there have to be rules.
13:56We all have to contribute our fair share to this great endeavor,
14:00and we cannot tolerate actions and attitudes
14:03that seek to undermine the amazing things
14:06that together as free men we have achieved
14:09and will continue to achieve.
14:13Mr. Jones was smiling
14:15as he gave Mr. Smith a pat on the back.
14:19The crowd was cheering so loudly
14:21that none of them had noticed
14:24that Samuel had died.
14:35We fought for a long time
14:37and all of us
14:38have lost many things
14:39and many dear people.
14:41But you are not alone.
14:43There are a lot of resistance
14:44in the entire planet.
14:46If you are listening,
14:48you are the resistance.
14:49You are the opposite.
14:50I am.
14:50If not,
14:52you are the resistance.
14:53Good luck all the time.
14:55That's so it is something to do.
14:55I willč it for you though.
14:55You
