Taoiseach marks 250 years of US independence during visit to Philadelphia

Ireland’s premier is marking 250 years of United States independence during a visit to Philadelphia.Taoiseach Micheal Martin’s visit to the Pennsylvanian city comes as part of the annual visit by Ireland’s leader to the US for St Patrick’s Day, which will include a meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House.

00:00America was, is and will remain a land of opportunity.

00:23Delighted to be here in Philadelphia, the birthplace of the Republic

00:28and of course very much appropriate too in that we are reflecting on

00:34and celebrating the role of the Irish in the Declaration of American Independence

00:38and today will be very much a day focused on that contribution of the Irish

00:45beginning here laying a wreath at this beautiful memorial

00:48which remembers the one million people who died during the Irish famine

00:52million more who emigrated and many of whom were looked after by American hosts at that time

01:00and then of course many more who went on to make a very significant contribution

01:05to American independence.
