Thousands of Canberrans gathered at sunrise to watch the first day of the annual Balloon Spectacular. Dozens of hot air balloons took to the sky over Lake Burley Griffen for one of the capitals most colourful and most popular events.

00:03Canberra's sky lit up in colour this morning as hot air balloons took to the sky.
00:09The balloons lifted off at dawn before flying over Lake Burley Griffin.
00:13The events drew thousands of people from the capital and beyond,
00:17with families rugging up against the early chill to watch the spectacle.
00:21Others kayaked for views from the water.
00:23It's beautiful, it's lovely getting up early in the morning and it's super exciting that they took off.
00:27It's a great time to come to Canberra, I tell people all the time this is the time to come.
00:32This year's feature balloon is Finlay the turtle, which received big cheers from the crowd as it took off.
00:38The balloon and its pilot travelled from the UK to raise awareness about turtle conservation efforts.
00:44There's not many places in the UK that we can take a balloon over such a big lake like this,
00:47so hopefully we're going to get some nice pictures and some nice videos of the balloon going across.
00:51He says he hopes Finlay brightened people's morning.
00:54Just giving joy and smiles to everybody, I mean there's lots of crazy things going on in the world at
00:58the moment,
00:58so if we can just give a bit of joy and happiness to everybody by seeing Finlay smile across Australia,
