00:00And I got to tell you, you know, I was in Dallas at the time when that transformation took place,
00:06when Jerry Jones ended up taking over the Dallas Cowboys.
00:09I had been brought in by Coach Tom Landry and Gil Brandt, and all of a sudden, I get a
00:16phone call, and I get a call from Jimmy Johnson, and Jimmy had told me that he was in Dallas,
00:22and all of a sudden, there he was.
00:24He became the next head football coach of the Dallas Cowboys, and he would go on a five-year run
00:31that would change the National Football League and how they do business when it comes to trades.
00:36Jimmy made over 50 trades in his five years there in Dallas, and he built that Cowboy dynasty into seeing
00:44what they had when it would go on to win three championships inside of four years.
00:50All the moves that he made, he brought the entire University of Miami coaching staff into Valley Ranch.
00:58Those guys would go on.
00:59They would evaluate talent and make no mistake about it.
01:03It was one of the absolutely greatest runs and greatest dynasties of all time.
01:07Unfortunately, it only lasted five years, unlike what we saw in New England that almost lasted 20 years.
01:13Now, here's what I say about Jerry Jones.
01:16With all the things and all the players and all the people that he's replaced, who is the one person
01:22that Jerry Jones has not been able to replace?
01:27That one guy, obviously, has been Jimmy Johnson.
01:31You replace the quarterbacks.
01:33You replace the running backs like Emmitt Smith.
01:35You replace the wide receivers like Michael Irvin.
01:39The one thing that Jerry, in all these years, he's not been able to replace, has been Jimmy Johnson.
01:45You know, you see other general managers have been able to rebuild teams.
01:49Look at what you see with Schneider up in Seattle.
01:53He goes from the Russell Wilson era with Pete Carroll into the brand-new regime that they have right now.
01:59They go on and win a championship with completely a different roster.
02:03You've seen in Philadelphia what Howie Roseman did.
02:05The 2017 Philadelphia Eagles would win a Super Bowl with two different quarterbacks, with Nick Foles and also with Carson
02:13Wentz, and also with Doug Peterson.
02:16Then you see what they ended up doing just two years ago.
02:19They ended up winning another Super Bowl with Jalen Hurts in an entirely different roster.
02:24Those are truly great general managers that know how to retool and rebuild.
02:29Jerry Jones has not been able to, in 30-plus years, ever to duplicate what he did in his early
02:35run when he had Jimmy Johnson.
02:37You know, I saw that Netflix series that they had, and what Jerry likes to do now is he likes
02:42to revamp history.
02:44He had nothing to do with the Charles Haley side.
02:48Charles Haley was a troubled player with the San Francisco 49ers, okay?
02:55And George Seifert was the head coach at the time.
02:58Carmen Policy was the general manager.
03:00He just did not want to play in San Francisco any longer.
03:03So what did they think they were going to do?
03:05They thought they would send him to the worst franchise in all of pro football at the time, which was
03:09the Dallas Cowboys, who were coming off a 1-15 season.
03:13So they sent him to Dallas.
03:15Jimmy goes, I'll take him.
03:16Jimmy Johnson brings him in.
03:17It was the final linchpin that would go on and help them win three Super Bowls in Dallas.
03:22Jerry Jones didn't pull that off.
03:24A guy named Bob Ackles and Jimmy Johnson.
03:27The whole Herschel Walker deal, there was a legendary run that my coach used to go on all the time,
03:32and they would do their noon run.
03:34How they came up with trading Herschel Walker in that legendary trade, they would go on their run.
03:40He looks over at Dave Wonstadt and says, hey, I'm going to trade Herschel Walker.
03:45Cleveland had a deal on the table at the time, and Jimmy was going to pull the trigger on it.
03:49Well, guess what they did at the end of the day?
03:53Minnesota came parachuting in, wanted to give up all those draft picks, and Jimmy went with the Minnesota Vikings.
03:59The irony in that deal was this.
04:03When Jimmy was building that team, he never used one player from that Minnesota Vikings deal.
04:11With Herschel Walker, not one of those players ever played a down in Dallas.
04:17Jimmy wanted the picks.
04:19Every single player, they all turned into picks back in the day, and that's what revamped that Dallas Cowboy dynasty.
04:27Jimmy wasn't going to sit around and wait like the old school teams would do and build through the draft
04:32and rarely use free agency.
04:34Do you understand that Coach Johnson at the time, when he was doing that, that was something that teams did
04:40not do.
04:41They didn't do all these trainings.
04:43How about this?
04:44The 50-plus trades that he made in Dallas was more combined than the entire league during that five-year
04:54run.
04:54No teams.
04:55All the other teams had combined, not as, pulled off as many trades as what Jimmy Johnson did back in
05:04the day.
05:04He drafted great.
05:06He signed free agents.
05:07He plugged holes with free agency, and he built that team in five years.
05:13The unfortunate thing is that Jerry Jones at the time, and I wish Barry could have told the story here,
05:19but when he was initially interviewed for the takeover for Jimmy Johnson, he walks into the room,
05:29and he looks at Jerry Jones and says, how can you two guys F this thing up so bad?
