The FBI on Thursday (March 12) confirmed that the Temple Israel synagogue attack in suburban Detroit was a "targeted act of violence" against the Jewish community, as authorities work to uncover the motive behind the incident.

Speaking at a press briefing, FBI officials said the assailant, identified as Ayman Muhammad Ghazali, a 41-year-old resident of Dearborn Heights, Michigan, had no prior criminal record or history of FBI investigations.

00:13The suspect, 41-year-old Ayman Mohamed Ghazali, allegedly rammed a truck into the synagogue, injuring a security officer and
00:22sparking a fire that caused smoke-related injuries to dozens of first responders.
00:26Ghazali and the first security officer engage in a gunfight through the rear window of Ghazali's vehicle.
00:34And at this point, Ghazali is unable to extract himself due to the vehicle being jammed in the hallway.
00:41At approximately 12.22 p.m., a second security officer engages Ghazali in a gunfight from the front of the
00:47vehicle.
00:49And soon thereafter, Ghazali's vehicle, his engine compartment, catches on fire.
00:54And at some point during the gunfight, Ghazali suffers a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
01:01Authorities are still in the early stages of the investigation, and they said it is too soon to speculate on
01:07the suspect's motive.
01:07The attack occurred at about 12.30 p.m. local time on Thursday at Temple Israel, one of the largest
01:14synagogues in the United States.
01:16All 140 preschool children were safely evacuated, and authorities credited security staff with helping to prevent further casualties.
