00:00Welcome to highlights of stage 5 of Terreno Adriatico.
00:05A hard day from Marotta, Mondolfo to Mon Barocchio, 184 kilometres.
00:12But look at that for a stage profile, a sawtooth profile with 3,800 metres plus of elevation.
00:19Big smiles from our new race leader, Giulio Perezelli.
00:22Smiles also from the man in second place, Isaac Del Toro.
00:25And the man in white today was Magnus Sheffield.
00:29Smiles there too from the Ciclamino jersey wearer, Mathieu van der Poel, after a magnificent victory yesterday.
00:35It was smiles all round at the start, but that was soon to change.
00:39It was going to be a very difficult day in the saddle.
00:42So bye-bye to the beach and hello to the racing.
00:45The flag was dropped.
00:47A very quick first hour of racing, as you can see.
00:50Accelerations galore.
00:52Eventually though, the elastic did snap and a group went clear at 31 kilometres
00:57and built up a handsome lead, including Plankard, Vestring, Boo, Volgren, Haig, Zimmermann, Bax and Julian Alaphlie.
01:04The double world champion.
01:05No drinks needed for Mathieu van der Poel.
01:08It was Jean-Boo of Cabreraal who took the first climb of the day.
01:1115 points in the bag for the Spaniard, leading Jack Haig over the top.
01:15The lead at this point, 4 minutes and 27 seconds.
01:18And the group were working well, Boo adding 15 points to his tally in the King of the Mountains,
01:24as the band played for the bunch behind.
01:28The group was whittled down a little bit.
01:304.44 the gap, 66 k's to go.
01:32Julian Alaphlie took the only intermediate sprint of the day in a three-second time bonus,
01:36whilst the crowd paid tribute to Michele Scarponi.
01:40Beautiful views.
01:42The sun was shining, but the gap now was coming down.
01:45With 45 kilometres still to race, over the top of the Monte della Matera,
01:49it was Plankard who took the points, and this time Boo was struggling.
01:53Through the finish line, with two laps to go, still Plankard drove hard on the front,
01:57but Bax was having a problem at the back for Pinarello Q36.5.
02:02The Dutchman suffering from a puncture, and deciding it was safer,
02:06and maybe a little bit quicker, to go for a full bike change.
02:12Meanwhile, Plankard taking the points there out of his team-mate Haig and Alaphilippe.
02:16The gap down to 2.46, Giovanni Agliotti crashing for Red Bull,
02:20Boer Hansgrohe, and the bunch whittling down to about 50 or 60 riders,
02:25and one of the big teams on the front doing the damage was at UEE.
02:29Then on to the climb, the fearsome climb of Santuario Beatessante.
02:35Ed Plankard had done his work, and faded very quickly indeed,
02:39with three 4Ks from the top.
02:41The stringer happy to lead, but there were soon to be attacks galore.
02:45The gap at this point had come down to just over two minutes,
02:48but Antonio Tiberi was having a bad day.
02:51Then the Dane struck.
02:52He struck early, drawing the irie of Julian Alaphilippe,
02:57who closed the gap, splitting the group.
02:59The string, Haig and Zimmermann, reduced to chasing,
03:02as the bunch behind continued to whittle down.
03:05Over the top, Michael Wolgren taking maximum points in his slipstream, Julian Alaphilippe.
03:10The gap on the chasing group now 25 seconds to 16 to the bunch.
03:16Jack Haig fighting valiantly, leading the chase behind.
03:20Taking the bell, Alaphilippe moved through to the front.
03:24Volgren in the slipstream.
03:26This was going to be an absolutely thrilling finale.
03:2814 seconds to group two on the road,
03:30and as you can see, two minutes and nine seconds to the group behind.
03:34Volgren there taking the points over the top,
03:36ahead of Alaphilippe, Haig and Zimmermann.
03:39By now, though, the peloton was really starting to line out.
03:42A furious chase ensued.
03:44Could these two hold out in front with just under 15Ks to go?
03:47Peluzali, a helping hand there to the Mexican champion.
03:50Then, it was Volgren's turn to accelerate clear.
03:55Here he comes right now.
03:57Sensational riding by del Toro.
03:59And look at the face.
04:00He looks like an inquisitor.
04:02The first of several attacks from del Toro,
04:04but this man was clear.
04:06Five years since his last win.
04:08There was a counter-attack as well from his teammate Richard Carapaz.
04:11The Giro champion, of course, of years gone by,
04:13and the Olympic champion.
04:14But hammer blow after hammer blow rained down.
04:17Isak del Toro, every time the road went up,
04:19he attacked, and he put Pelizzari in serious trouble.
04:22The gap started to open.
04:23Only Matteo Jorgensen could latch on to the flying Mexican,
04:27who continued to accelerate clear.
04:28Even Primoz Roglic could offer little assistance.
04:31But meanwhile, with a gap down to just 21 seconds,
04:35Michael Volgren could sense victory.
04:37He could smell it.
04:39Jorgensen assisting with the pacemaking with Isak del Toro.
04:43But coming into the finale,
04:44there was only one man flying towards victory.
04:48This was a sensational performance by the Dane.
04:54Let's wait and see if they can skirt around him.
04:56No, there's the line in front of him.
04:58He believes.
05:00Oh, you better believe it as well.
05:02Kapow!
05:03What a sensational knockout blow for absolutely.
05:06A fantastic win for the Dane.
05:09And look at this.
05:10A sprint for second place taken by Isak del Toro.
05:13Adding to his time bonuses there.
05:15Six seconds on the line for him.
05:17Third for Jorgensen.
05:18Fourth for Johansen.
05:19Ciccone there, home,
05:20just in front of a Giulio Pellizzari,
05:23who was to seed the Malia Azura.
05:27What a win for the man from EF Education.
05:29Easy post.
05:31Superb performance.
05:32His first win in five years,
05:33just ahead of Isak del Toro.
05:36He can be pleased.
05:38He can be proud.
05:39But there was a change on the general classification.
05:42Del Toro taking over the lead
05:43from Giulio Pellizzari by 23 seconds.
05:47A good day for the Mexican.
05:48Equal points with Mathieu van der Poel,
05:50who stays in the Malia Chiclamino.
05:53The Dutchman happy to smile.
05:56Diego Pablo Sevilla, despite being dropped,
05:58kept the lead of the King of the Mountains classification.
06:01Smiles all round from the man from Palti.
06:03visit Malta.
06:04Unsurprisingly, Isak del Toro
06:06also leading the Best Young Riders classification,
06:08with the Queen's stage and Sunday still to come.
06:11Can he hold on?
