00:00Over a foot of rain has already fallen in part of Hawaii and a state of emergency is in effect
00:07because we're going to see days of additional rain tied to a very strong Kona low.
00:12So what is a Kona low pressure system? This is an area of low pressure parked west northwest of Hawaii
00:20working in tandem with high pressure to the east and it's driving this unyielding barrage of Pacific moisture into the
00:27southwest facing slopes of the Hawaiian Islands. Some of these areas are typically on the dry side of the island
00:33so it's a big problem out there and we're going to be dealing with feet of rain in some spots.
00:37Mount Waiali Ali, one of the wettest places on earth, already saw 13 plus inches of rain just since midweek
00:43and we've got days of rain to come and it's not just rain. Up at the high summits on the
00:48Big Island, up in the volcano area, we're looking at winter storm warnings. Yes, it does snow in Hawaii and
00:54this is a prime example. High wind warnings are in effect for screaming wind. Some of the summits could gust
00:59over 100 miles per hour with this event. This ribbon of high octane moisture is going to continue to impact
01:05central parts of Hawaii where many areas of the
01:07areas are going to experience dangerous flash flooding through the weekend into early next week.
