00:00Here in the Mokoko community of Lagos, Faith Okbona is turning her pain into purpose.
00:06Women in this room are survivors of gender-based violence, including Faith.
00:10She has dedicated her life to educating and supporting women who feel trapped,
00:15helping them reclaim their voices.
00:18Gender-based violence are in different forms.
00:21And the majority of the times, it has to be with people very close to you.
00:25People that should protect you are not the ones hurting you.
00:28Faith's work, and that of others like her, is a beacon of hope in the battle to stop gender-based
00:33violence.
00:34According to the World Health Organization, one in three women worldwide will experience physical or sexual abuse in their lifetime.
00:41A staggering reality.
00:43I was raped from the age of five, till I was 17.
00:49And ranging from cousins to uncles to nephews to aunties, I had gang rape.
00:57And it was a bitter experience, because it happened right under my father's roof.
01:03If Sea Hope can bring me out of the darkness, I can do the same to all the people.
01:10The Centre for Children's Health, Education, Orientation and Protection, or Sea Hope, is one of four privately-owned shelters in
01:17Lagos.
01:18Founded by journalist Betty Abba in 2013, the NGO provides refuge for survivors of abuse like Vivian.
01:27My mum died nine years ago, and my mum, the other sister, came to pick us.
01:33So this faithful day, Azra came back at night.
01:38He came to our room, so he raped me.
01:41Kept on molesting me for three good years, since when I was 12.
01:46My cousin called some of the policemen at our site, went to the police station, and they detained him, and
02:01I was still in the court.
02:04Many children in this community centre experience violence and trauma.
02:08They are taught skills, counselled and educated about gender-based violence.
02:12The hope is to end the cycle of violence.
02:15I want girls who are being abused to come out of their shells, out of the darkness.
02:21I want them to have a life, the life they've always dreamed of.
02:25Because in this trauma, they can have that life.
02:30Symbolising unity and resilience, cultural dance is integrated into today's campaign for the children,
02:36drawing more children in and making it a memorable day.
02:39But the fight is far from over.
02:42Why are we all newろ tell a story aboutmers in society?
02:44For samen?
02:45Why are we all newreet dogs?
02:48Everybody is trembling in and smiling.
02:48They are finns, soldiers, ministers, ministers, ministers, ministers, TVs,ologists, ministers, ministers, ministers, ministers continue into these people's messages.
02:48So we let them know they don't invest in tampoco, but we never agree with each other saying the problem.
02:48While they cry about them, they have not to know God without them if they talk a lot more executive.
