00:04I grew up with a father who was more than just absent, and now as the dad of a little
00:10girl was just over two, I find myself watching shows like Shrinking that deal so deeply with fatherhood, especially father
00:18and daughter relationship, and thinking about them for days afterward.
00:21How important is it for a show like this to explore those themes in a smart, layered and not stereotypical
00:29way?
00:30I think the whole show has so many dynamics. This father-daughter relationship that Jason and I have through our
00:38characters is really special and really strong and unique to our characters,
00:44but I think the whole show has so many pairings and trios that explore the interpersonal relationship in these dynamics.
00:56So I think that everybody, I love that you have that affection for that relationship.
01:06I think everybody has like a dynamic in the show that they can relate to or they can be amused
01:14by.
01:14So yeah, the show is full of those relationships.
01:18I'm so happy to be here with you because I'm a great fan of you and Bill, so I'm super,

01:26So from struts to shrinking, how has your creative relationship with Bill changed and grown over the years?
01:40We've had this great creative relationship together and a lot of it was perfect because we have three children and
01:50we can manage all of that and schedules.
01:53And when we started shrinking, my youngest was going away to college and they have a big writer's room and,
02:03you know, I was able to do something different and do something that wasn't like me.
02:11And I trust Bill and the writers to make that happen.
02:15and, uh, Brett Goldstein had a different, you know, have, there's a lot of different writers I hadn't worked with
02:20and, uh, it's been a change and it's been lovely.
02:28I mean, I, I, I'm always surprised when I get the scripts, you know, of what Liz is going to
02:33get up to.
02:34Nonsense.

02:44And as a matter of fact, I have to share you, uh, one thing with, share one thing with you.
02:48Season one of shrinking started about a month and a half before my partner and I, uh, found, found out
02:55we were expecting a baby girl.
02:57And since staying hydrated is basically a full-time job during pregnancy, Gabby became our spiritual guide.

03:07And you have, I like the ones that have the like, okay, you got it.

03:16So first of all, I would start with a, with a light one.
03:18In this season, there's a joke about spoilers.
03:21What's your relationship with spoilers when you're watching a movie or a TV show or reading a book?
03:27Yeah.
03:27I can't stand spoilers.
03:28Uh, you know, sometimes I think we watch stuff and then we just jump online to talk about, you know,
03:33the discourse and spoiler.
03:33I can't stand spoilers.
03:35I can't stand when people just run right to the spoil.
03:38Like if you go, they go like, oh, have you seen white Lotus?
03:40And they're like, can you believe this?
03:42And I know a couple of people like that.
03:43And it's unbelievable to me to take that experience away from other people.
03:47And, uh, I hate it.
03:49So no, but let's, let's do some spoilers right now.
03:53No, no, no, no.
03:54I don't want to finish on, on, on, on the grill.
03:57So, and Alice is, is young, but incredibly, incredibly perceptive.
04:01Uh, have you ever been in a real life situation where you had to be emotionally the adult in, in
04:07the room?
04:08Uh, yeah, I've, I would say that's my personality.
04:12I think I'm, I'm like, I'm an oldest daughter.
04:14I, I, I was, I was always commanding attention.
04:19My parents joke that I was born 30.
04:22I've always like, I've always, I've always tried to have this like, or especially when I was younger,
04:29I had this like fake it till you make it attitude that I think I'm, I've been growing out of
04:33now.
04:33But that is an element that I share with Alice, that it's like, you, you, you go forward.
04:42There's a, there's a, a maturity to us, I guess.
04:46Um, but yeah.
04:48Yeah.
04:48I share that with her.
04:50Yeah.
04:51So when it comes to your off camera work, uh, as a music supervisor, how do you usually work on
04:58choosing, on choosing a song?
04:59Do you start with something specific in mind or do you let the script or sometimes, I don't know, even
05:04the dailies lead you?
05:05Um, well, I work a lot with music in my preparation.
05:09I love being a music supervisor on a show that I'm on because before we start shooting, I always have,
05:16I've always banked the music.
05:17I have our choices in playlists of what we're going to use for the season that the editors can pick
05:22from any of these lists.
05:23But then as I'm shooting, I, I can, I know what's happening with the characters.
05:28I listened to music.
05:30I have a long drive to work and I listened to music, um, driving to and from work.
05:36And I have a really good idea.
05:38Like this song was going to be here and oh, I see how they shot that.
05:42And it's very special to be a music supervisor on a show that you're acting in.
05:46It's, it's, you just have an insight that you normally wouldn't have.
05:51And, um, it's amazing.
05:56I mean, I know when I put a song in and I get chills and it, it works.
06:02I also have instances where we love a song so much that, uh, I can go to the writers and
06:08say, we, can you write for this song?
06:12You know, even, even if I'm not in this, the scenes, um, this is this beautiful song that we, we
06:18have to use and they'll write for it.
06:20And that's always a special time.
06:23So, uh, Gabby goes through so much in this season.
06:26And how closely do you relate to, to the way she faces, uh, difficult moments?
06:32Oh man.
06:32The writing is so good on this show.
06:34We have amazing writers.
06:35I relate to Gabby and I relate to all the characters.
06:37Um, and that's, I think art and like TV and movies and film and music.
06:43It's just about in books.
06:45It's about empathy.
06:46It's about putting yourself in other people's shoes or choosing not to, but thinking about what you're seeing and consuming.
06:52And, uh, so I totally relate to it.
06:54And with Gabby, you know, my job between action and cut is to believe the circumstances for two minutes at
07:00a time.
07:01There's no, I don't have a phone.
07:02I don't have any attachments.
07:04I guess somewhere deep, deep, deep in the back of my mind is my dog Poe and wondering if he
07:08pooped or peed, you know, that's always there.
07:11Uh, and then, but everything else outside of that is just being present.
07:15And, uh, this job when I'm doing it well is a really good exercise in being present.
07:22And, uh, what a gift that is to be able to like almost meditate and do that for work.
07:29You know, so much of acting, there's all this fluff around acting.
07:33There's all this thing, these things you need to do.
07:35There's auditions, there's no's, there's, you know, producing stuff for yourself, there's interviews.
07:39And then there's the, the, the smallest part of it is the actual acting.
07:42And, um, it's really hard to do that, uh, in this industry and to be able to do it for
07:48a few seasons on a show.
07:50So I feel really lucky.
07:51And that was my long winded answer of saying I relate to her and I relate to everybody on the
07:56show.
07:57So shrinking really put you on the map and gave you a rare opportunity in Hollywood, uh, working closely with
08:03Harrison Ford over a long period of time.
08:05Uh, it's not just a legend, but also someone who's deeply loved in the industry.
08:10What's the biggest lesson you've learned?
08:13Not about acting, but about staying grounded as a person who works in this peculiar business.
08:19Oh my goodness.
08:21I feel like, I feel like that the answer to your question was kind of in your question, like the,
08:29the lesson of being grounded throughout all of this time.
08:34It's a beautiful thing to witness.
08:36It's a very inspiring thing to witness to see Harrison have such a love for filmmaking in every aspect of,
08:44with the, the acting and scene partner work, but then also his relationship with the crew is so strong and
08:52beautiful.
08:52His relationship with the camera is very intentional and he's a master at, at, at, at embodying the role and
09:05also just being an amazing person on set.
09:09So yeah, the being grounded, I want to do that.
09:14I want to do that as well.
09:15Being grounded for a long period of time.
09:16I hope to sustain a career like that someday.
