The Ravens got a redo with the Maxx Crosby trade, what would you redo in Detroit sports?
Transcript
00:00Got Dear John coming up at 9.35.
00:02Advice from the man himself.
00:07Last night was kind of a weird change of pace.
00:11Yeah, nothing.
00:12Could we, unless you were into meaningless games in the Big Ten tournament,
00:17could we just get the Pistons in the wings,
00:20or whether it's NHL and NBA to agree that if you got two teams in a city,
00:27schedule them to play on alternate nights?
00:30Because two nights ago, our cup was runneth over.
00:33I mean, we couldn't even get to Team USA Baseball,
00:36not knowing the rules and making fools of themselves.
00:39You know, Bam Adebayo was a mention on the show.
00:42Everything was crammed in two nights ago.
00:43Last night was slow.
00:44Last night's biggest story is the Italian-Americans helped the American-Americans
00:48stay in the World Baseball Classic.
00:51And the biggest story in sports continues to be
00:54this Max Crosby trade rescinded.
00:57And you have a fun spin on this.
01:00Yeah, in regards to, remind me what my fun spin is.
01:06Detroit do-overs.
01:07Oh, yeah.
01:08So I should read the rundown.
01:14You can tell he's really going to sell this topic.
01:16Yeah, I am curious because the Ravens made this trade.
01:21And then all of a sudden, as Henderson is shopping his wares around,
01:28he wants north of $30 million.
01:30He's seen some of the others deal, and nothing's coming to fruition.
01:33So all of a sudden, Baltimore says,
01:35well, hey, why don't you vacation for a couple of days in Baltimore?
01:39Stop by the building, and let's have a chat.
01:42And while Max Crosby is there, they're on the phone negotiating with Trey Hendrickson.
01:50They find they can get a deal done, and then, oops, Max doesn't pass his physical.
01:57Six weeks ago, he had knee surgery.
01:59He's still on crutches, which everyone across the NFL, including Baltimore, knew.
02:04And their excuse is, well, we wanted to sign them both.
02:10And so they said, well, Max doesn't pass his physical, so we're rescinding the trade,
02:16and we want our two draft picks back, and we'll sign Trey Hendrickson.
02:21They do that.
02:22I am curious for Detroit sports fans.
02:28Is there a pick?
02:31Is there a free agent signing?
02:33Is there a trade that if you could go back in time and rescind,
02:41which one would you pick?
02:43What would you do?
02:44Yeah, we're calling it Detroit do-overs.
02:46Do you still have the receipt lying around?
02:50Yeah.
02:50You want to return it?
02:52248-539-9797.
02:55And yours would be?
02:57I only get to pick one.
02:59Oh, no, no.
02:59You could pick more.
03:00I mean, let's 248-539-9797.
03:04Like, there's plenty to pick from.
03:06Well, okay.
03:06This is just top of mind, because I was joking with you guys off air.
03:09My final game of the Red Wing season ticket package is against the Minnesota Wild and Quinn Hughes.
03:17My Detroit do-over would be, you don't draft Phillip Zedina, you draft Quinn Hughes.
03:23Okay.
03:27You can arguably be the best defenseman in hockey who played college in your state.
03:32How the hell did you miss on this guy?
03:33He's one of the best hockey players in the world.
03:36He's a gold medalist, and he's in the prime of his career.
03:39He'd be here at the perfect time for the Detroit Red Wings.
03:43Yeah.
03:43That would be my Detroit do-over of part one of several.
03:48And there are several, and since you went with a draft do-over, I selfishly will do one as well.
03:54Okay.
03:55In the 99 draft.
03:57Oh, no.
03:58This is...
03:58You don't take Aaron Gibson.
04:02You take a right tackle from the University of Michigan who give you a decade's worth of performance in one.
04:13John Jansen.
04:15This is such a selfish answer.
04:18I wasn't even going to go there until you said that you'd redo the draft and not take Zedina, but
04:24you'd go with Quinn Hughes.
04:25My Detroit do-over is all about me.
04:27What's in it for me?
04:30Screw the fans and what's good for the teams.
04:33Uh-huh.
04:34John, you wouldn't be in the top 10 of most people's Detroit do-overs.
04:37Probably not.
04:39I'm not asking.
04:40I am asking everyone else.
04:41You asked me what mine was.
04:43I told you what mine was.
04:47Let's go to the phones, because I don't want to stay...
04:49I mean, I have probably a dozen, but...
04:51Oh, sure.
04:51There's plenty.
04:52But especially when you say it doesn't have to be trades, like the Max Crosby one.
04:57It could be trades, free agents.
04:58Some form of transaction, player acquisition, or a missed opportunity.
05:02Yeah, you got the receipt lying around in the back of your car.
05:04You want a Detroit do-over.
05:06Let's go to Dave in Clinton Township.
05:07Dave, good morning.
05:09Hey, good morning.
05:10I'm guessing by a long shot, this has to be number one.
05:13Adam Oates for Bernie Federco.
05:151989, right?
05:16He went drinking with Clema and Probert back in the day.
05:19Yeah, you're going back.
05:20I mean, this is late, late 80s, but he would have been there for the 90s.
05:25Yeah, I mean, one of the only people that beat him in assists for a time period was Wayne Gretzky
05:30and then Adam Oates.
05:32He's a great passer.
05:35Yeah, I can't think of one that would surprise.
05:38I mean, that trade was made by the same Russian judge that screwed over Jones Jr. in the Olympics.
05:43I mean, that's how bad that trade was.
05:45Adam Oates, there's our first nominee.
05:48I knew we'd get this one.
05:49Marcus in East Point.
05:50Let's put you to the front of the line.
05:51You're on 97.1.
05:53Oh, you guys are all right.
05:54How are you doing?
05:55Good, Marcus.
05:57Oh, good.
05:57Nice talking to you.
05:58It's been a while.
05:59My Detroit do-over would be Darko, and I'll take Carmelo Anthony or Dwayne Wade.
06:04Either one.
06:05Yep.
06:06Now, I'm with you, but some people say they wouldn't end up with Rasheed if they did it.
06:10I believe you could still have done that deal, and you probably win more than one NBA title.
06:14You win two or three.
06:16Or as many as you put your mind to.
06:19That team would have been awesome.
06:20Not one, not two, not three.
06:23Right.
06:24Right.
06:24Well, anyway, good talking to you guys.
06:25Take care.
06:26Yeah, there's this belief like, well, Carmelo wouldn't have been a good culture fit.
06:29He didn't play defense.
06:30I'm sorry.
06:31Larry Brown and that group of veterans, he would have had to play defense, and he would
06:34have allowed them to win games where they could score at least 75 points.
06:37Yeah.
06:38You want me to give you one that's a little bit more legitimate than my selfish?
06:42Yes, please.
06:43All right.
06:43I'll give you the 2014 NFL draft.
06:46Is that Ebron?
06:47Eric Ebron.
06:48And then, what, three picks later, the St. Louis Rams, future of L.A. Rams, take Aaron
06:58Donald.
06:58One of the greatest defensive players in the history of the NFL.
07:01And, guys, this isn't one of those, like, oh, three years later in hindsight, fans are
07:06going, why a tight end?
07:08Sue's about to walk out the door.
07:09Why not Aaron Donald?
07:12Line five.
07:13Yes, please.
07:14Let's go to Kevin and McComb.
07:15Kevin, you're on 97.1.
07:17Hey, so, yeah, John and Goppa, thank you.
07:21I personally hate Michigan football.
07:24Like, you know, it's like politics is the biggest politics to me.
07:29But I have to say, John, you are as talented as they come in the NFL, and you are a
07:34damn
07:35good football player.
07:36I would have definitely taken you in a heartbeat over Aaron Gibson.
07:40But I also, you just stole my other one.
07:42And I was going to say, real quick, Aaron Donald over Ebron is just, what a no-brainer.
07:48I mean, I don't.
07:49So, can you rank this for me?
07:50Because I have a couple in that same vein.
07:52There's Ebron over Darnold, Mike Williams over Demarcus Ware, and Terry Fair over Randy
07:59Moss.
07:59What's the worst of that group?
08:02It's got to be Aaron Donald, because he's, I mean, even though the Rams, yeah, the Rams
08:06have a lot of talent on that team, but if the Rams don't have Aaron Donald, they're not
08:10winning that Super Bowl.
08:11I think he's, can we say he's better than Randy Moss?
08:16Yes.
08:16Even though Randy Moss is the best wide receiver ever.
08:19I know, but I think you could make that case, especially winning at the line of scrimmage,
08:22and Donald was a driver for them winning that Super Bowl.
08:24I'd never fight you on that.
08:27But, no shortage of people to talk to.
08:29Connor in Clinton Township.
08:30Connor, good morning.
08:32Good morning, guys.
08:33How you doing?
08:34What's your Detroit do-over?
08:37So, I'm not even a baseball guy, but I think if we don't sign Javi Baez, then Chris Illich
08:47might be a little bit more apt to, you know, sending out long-term deals.
08:52I think in an alternate reality where we don't sign that awful Baez contract, I think
08:58Scoob will get, maybe it ups the chance that Scoob will get his long-term deal done.
09:04There was also something about Wayne Gretzky coming to Detroit that was nixed by his dad,
09:09but I don't have a complete story on that one.
09:11I've heard that story, too, and I could look it up to fill in the gaps, but could you
09:15have imagined?
09:16Tom, I don't know if you're familiar with that.
09:18Which one again?
09:18That Gretzky could have been a Red Wing?
09:20Eh, as far as I know, there was never much smoke there.
09:24Okay, Wayne says, or has told stories, but his dad kind of talked him out of it.
09:29Yeah, and he was destined for L.A.
09:33That's where, because of his wife and she was an actress and all that, you know, and
09:38they wanted to...
09:39But he loved Gordie Howe.
09:39I think that was the genesis of it.
09:41And the underrated thing with Gretzky and being in L.A. was, you know, it made hockey
09:47work in warm climates.
09:49That was the big thing back then.
09:51Sure.
09:52People didn't know, and it helped the league expand.
09:55Yeah, so this is a quick Google.
09:57It says, initially wanted to play for Detroit.
09:59His father, Walter, suggested he create his own legacy in Los Angeles rather than follow
10:02in Gordie Howe's footsteps.
10:05Gretzky considered himself a huge Red Wing fan growing up and admired the organization.
10:09He later helped carry Gordie Howe's casket in 2016.
10:14I mean, yeah, look, I think as far as I know, there was never any real smoke to the Red
10:19Wings getting him.
10:20Now, him dream and wanting to play there, that's a different thing.
10:24It becomes a cute story years later.
10:25Yeah, and the Red Wings were such a downed franchise at that time.
10:28Back to the caller's point on Javi, I do think he makes a great point about how it affected
10:33the spending for the Tigers.
10:34I mean, you were coming off the bad years of Miggie's contract, but you had to live
10:38it out because you had to have the celebrations and all that stuff, the legacy that Miggie
10:43left.
10:43And then you're paying two guys multiple years that were doing absolutely nothing.
10:47It was just a classic example of Al Avila up against the deadline and making a panicky
10:55decision.
10:56That was he did it the day before the lockout started.
10:58He was afraid he wasn't going to be able to get a shortstop and didn't let the market
11:02play out.
11:02And then remember Correa, and we were all like, oh, really?
11:05That was out there?
11:06Yep.
11:07It's like, and then also the Justin Verlander deal.
11:11Somebody brought that up on text.
11:12He should have held out for Tucker.
11:13You don't do the deal.
11:15We've hit every food group, and we still haven't even hit on all of these ones that
11:19people are waiting to talk about.
11:20And I got a text message from TJ Lang.
11:24He's weighing in on this one as well.
11:25This is going to be a they should have drafted me.
11:27No, no, no, no, no.
11:28This is not self-serving like I was.
11:31Although it was backed up.
11:34Yeah, we got someone to kiss your ass.
11:36Okay, great.
11:37Perfect.
11:37We'll get more phone calls and texts.
11:39Detroit do-overs 97.1.
